Fiat 3000 (digital 3d )
« on: July 17, 2018, 01:09:49 AM »

I put together a 3d model of the Italian Fiat 3000 of 1920-21, their version of the ubiquitous Renault FT. This particular model mounts a pair of Villar Perosa machine-guns. The latest model, of 1930, had a long-barrelled 37mm gun; I'll have a go at one of those too, though I'll be working entirely from pictures as I don't have any drawings for that version, so there will probably be a degree of guesswork and fudging involved.

It's available on Shapeways at http://shpws.me/QvY3

I've made it available in their cheaper white nylon material as well as the high definition resins, but to be honest I'm not completely sure that it will print successfully in that stuff.

Lovely work. Any chance you could up scale to 1/56th scale. Need a couple for Sicily 43. Thank you.
Best wishes,
Helen

There's one ready to go right now, but Shapeways are having issues with their uploading. It should be there soon though (fingers crossed)

The figure is a 15mm WW1 British officer from Peter Pig, included for scale.

Here's a 15mm one I printed on my own FDM printer. It's been cleaned up a bit and primed, but I see it needs more attention yet, now that there's a coat of paint on it. It would be better printed in resin on a SLA or DLP printer, but I don't have access to one of those, and am unlikely to any time soon.

FDM prints like this take a fair bit of cleaning up. Not just the printing supports, but the printer nozzle leaves a little spike of plastic off every single one of the rivets (or similar detail) on the top surfaces, and they each need to be individually trimmed back. There are little wisps of filament stringing as well. In ABS, they could be dealt with by a quick brush-over with a brush damped in acetone, but the solvent for PLA is considerably nastier (and harder to get hold of).

I've also made 1:100 and 1:56 models of the Fiat 3000 Mod.30, which mounted a long-barreled 37mm gun.

The machine-gun turret from the Mod.21 can also be mounted on this chassis.

The 1:100 scale model is available at http://shpws.me/QwlV

The 1:56 scale model is available at http://shpws.me/QwlW

I have purchased one model to see how it fits with my Perry Miniatures Italians. I bought the clear plastic as I prefer this material to work with.

Cheers and thanks,

Helen

I was looking for how to smooth PLA and one of the solvents was chlorform. Not really sure that you can walk into Boots and ask for that these days  o_o. "But honest, officer, it's just to smooth my 3d truck"

I ended up spraying my truck with a couple of coats of Mr Surfacer and sanding between each coat. It's acceptable, but I'm not sure how it would work given the number of rivets you have. It pooled around the few bolts the truck has, so it's likely any rivets would start to disappear.

Picked up my Fiat 3000 parcel today. Once home I looked at the scale against my Perry miniatures and I'm very happy.

Thank you for making the plans for this model to be printed.

Cheers,

Helen
