1/50 and 1/56 scale M48A3
« on: January 17, 2019, 08:36:38 PM »
Just finishing a commission for another miniatures company to be cast in 1/50.  Havn't decided if I'll do an Israeli and another American M48A1 version in 1/56.  Fun model..I have a few more 1/50 commission coming next.  Modeling done in Brush.  I now have my own 3D printer..so printing at home next.

Here's a 1/56th Stingray to show the print quality of a $450 printer, straight out of the vat with supports snapped off  :D

The M48 looks a bit odd, not sure what it is.

The Cadillac Gage Stingray looks cool, not sure about the front mudguard though. Very Twilight 2000.

The proportions of the rear deck on that M-48 look off to me. That may be down to turret proportions or placement but the arse end of it definitely looks too long. See below.

The printed Stingray looks pretty damn good. Others with cheaper printers should take note at what is possible for a moderate price.

Seeing that I am switching over to 1/50 for my moderns, this interests me. What other builds are you planing to make in that scale?

I take it that if you're doing a Magach then it would be the 1967, rather than 1973. As the Magach 3 would require more modification compared to the base M48 (new gun and ERA being the most obvious changes).

There's not much in the way of options for the M60 either. Though despite being a more modern tank, that may be a bit of a mess as far as which variant to do. There's the base American ones obviously, however there may be a scuffle between all the Israeli and Turkish modifications...

A company is doing modern IDF (now that Mike Bravo has fallen off the Earth), Empress maybe, so more IDF armour could be called for. Though they phased out most of their older armour in the 2000s, so that may be a consideration for yourselves when it comes to potential Israeli lines. Otherwise there's only a handful of companies doing pre-2000s Israelis.

As for scales. Whilst there are still companies producing modern vehicles in 1/56th, the trend recently has been to go with 1/50th. Though if you're already established with 1/56th that may shake your customer base somewhat to change. The issue I'd see in producing Cold War era vehicles in 1/56th is that those wanting to mix the ranges in with their more modern lines may have already gone for 1/50th due to the larger variety of models available, and so choose just not to pick your stuff up at all as they're not the same scale. However, Academy do the M48 in 1/48th already, so any wargamers wanting one for their collections may have already bought one of those if they're mostly using 1/50th stuff.

The problem with judging renders is that the cameras used in these programs are not real.  So you get images that are basically fisheye and impossible to take if it were a printed or hand built model.if you place the plans over the main parts, they are all correct.  The turret is a bit fwd, as is the gun/mantle, but this is a hasty render with all the pieces brought in, specifically to show the client the progress of the project.

I have a few different guns barrels.  this one is more heroic for client request.  I also have more in scale ones and IDF versions, as well as the mantle with the canvas covering and search light.  I now need to add the correct sockets to put them all together in the variants requested.

Now that I have a printer set up. the costs of producing a small master for some  smaller models is about $20:D. I'm also thinking of getting another printer like this and eventually a larger form2 in order to specialized models on demand.  So, instead of me having to take pre-orders for say..40 E-50 tanks.  I can just finish a design and ask "Who wants one?" and hit the print button.

The stingray came out better than I thought.  I have not sculpted any humans yet in ZBrush, but I'll get to doing those in the next few months.  My 3D printer is an Anycubic Photon and was literally $450.  It uses a LCD screen to expose UV curable resin one slice at a time.  So the Stingray tank was literally $4 to print at 28mm.  The only limitation is the print bed size.  I'm limited to 115 x 65 x 155 mm.  Good enough for miniatures, and medium scale vehicles if I print them as a kit.

Would love a 1/50 Ontos for my Viet Nam gaming.

Fair enough re the view of the render.

If the price for printing is so low and you go down the make to order route, the next logical step would be design and print on demand. Obviously that would have to factor design time costs into price but it opens the prospect of whole ranges of new and exciting kit being available at affordable prices.

I must admit, despite having an eclectic collection of toys, scale wise, I’m also inclined towards the 1/50 benchmark for moderns.

I am becoming evermore interested in 3D printing can I ask which make of printer you used?
