Title: Pulp Alley's The Lost World of Lemuria: Death Rides the Sky AAR 25 March
Post by: oabee on May 04, 2017, 01:55:02 AM
I'm getting near to the finishing touches for my Lost World Pulp Alley scenario to be premiered in a couple of weeks. I'll be at Drums at the Rapids at Fort Meigs in Perrysburg, Ohio on Saturday May 20, then taking it on the road to Origins in Columbus Ohio on June 17. More on the story and other horrific details (yes, I'll be breaking out that wonderful Horror Deck) to follow. Here are a few photos of the work in progress. Still to come: Savage Core Amazons.

Finished a new plot point: the dismembered body of explorer Professor Blackthorn, left at a local totem to ward off interlopers. Rumor has it that his journal, still believed to be on his putrefying body, offers valuable clues to hordes of priceless jewels and other wonders. But searching that body, with foreboding totems looming nearby, is certain to be a horrific experience.  Get the Horror Deck ready to hand... >:D

Oh, that's disgusting! Love it!  :-*  lol

Wish I could claim credit, but the inspiration came from the Horror rules where it states that a Horrific Challenge could be "searching a pile of rotting corpses." Granted my plot point is just one corpse to search, not a pile, but with the dismembered-body-and-head-on-a-stake theme and the totems, ravens, and rune stone I hope it qualifies.  :D

Title: Re: Lost World Pulp Alley scenario at Drums at the Rapids AAR 24/5
Post by: oabee on May 24, 2017, 10:26:49 AM
The Lost World scenario was held on Saturday May 20 at the Drums at the Rapids miniatures convention. Everyone seemed to have a good time, and the game went down --literally!--to the last roll of the dice. I will include here a taste of the action with a more thorough report to come later. Uncharacteristically, my normally trusty Samsung Edge 7 produced some out-of-focus images  :'( but I am planning on reposing and re-shooting the offending photos for the final AAR.

The story so far: It is 1895, and the renowned scientist/explorer Professor Thaddeus Blackthorne, accompanied by his daughter Penelope, have found a lost world hidden in the darkest unexplored areas of Africa. He excitedly sends a porter to alert his colleagues in the International Research and Exploration Society of his discovery. But things then start to go horribly wrong. The Blackthornes run afoul of a tribe of Neanderthals: the Professor is torn limb to limb, his head placed on a stake, and Penelope is held captive.

A special rule was added: the Cave Bear, Sabre-toothed Tiger, and Axebeak represented the extreme perils for their associated plot points. Once the peril was passed and the plot point seized, they were transformed into full-fledged characters who had to be defeated in the normal way (shooting or brawling). Until they were knocked out, they relentlessly attacked the closest character(s) (the exception was the Axebeak, who wouldn't  go further than 12" from its nest). Despite the added difficulty the players really enjoyed this rule!  ;D

The Outlanders

Doc Flynn’s I. R. E. S. League
Flynn has come in response to Blackthorne’s summons. He may have arrived too late! Can he save Penelope?

Capt. Wolf’s Sky Pirates
Ever the opportunist, Wolf has learned of Blackthorne’s discoveries and is irresistibly drawn by the lure of lost riches.

The Natives

Aleena’s Amazons
The Amazons have arrived on the scene while looking for their lost Okroi, only to discover what Drekk’s tribe has done. But this outlander woman they have seized could serve useful…a new breeding line for future Amazons?

Drekk’s Neanderthals
Drekk’s slaying of the outlander and capture of his daughter have greatly pleased the old gods. Perhaps they would grant him power in exchange for the woman’s life…Drekk grows tired of being dominated by the Amazon tribe.

Alex, I love your stuff  :-*, and one of your Snake Priestesses will be the leader of the next Amazon league I'm creating for this scenario. I hope to have her and her colleagues ready for Origins.

Here's your Okroi, and I'll PM you a better copy of the photo:

Title: Gettin' ready for Origins: Lost World monument, woolly rhino, Snake Priestess
Post by: oabee on June 09, 2017, 12:20:29 AM
Getting ready to take things on the road to Origins on June 17. So I figured we could use a new plot point: a carven idol from prior days, next to a strange monument from an ancient forgotten civilization.

A new peril rears his ugly horns: a woolly rhinoceros.

And a new sidekick for the Amazons: the Snake Priestess.

Still more to come. Hopefully.   :D

Excellent work yet again.  Where did the idol and monument come from?

The wooden idol is from Zealot Miniature's wonderful little "Ancient Idols-Dungeon Clutter" collection:

Go here:
http://zealotminiatures.com/zealot-shop/   then click The Dungeon, then Other, then page 2.

The monument is from Mini Monsters: I buy their stuff on their US eBay store. This particular one is their "Elven Small Obelisk." I thought it had an ancient-lost-civilization kind of look.

I'm in the States and have found Mini Monsters to offer good service and decently priced and fairly quick (for overseas!) shipping. I backed Zealot's Twisting Catacombs Kickstarter, and their stuff is great. This is the first time I ordered directly from them and found the shipping cost reasonable, although they did take longer to ship than what I have come to expect from Mini Monsters.

And thanks everyone for your nice comments. Believe me, I have obtained tons of inspiration -and encouragement!- from you excellent folks who routinely display your work and ideas on Lead Adventure!   :-*
Title: Re: Gettin' ready for Origins: last minute Lost World additions
Post by: oabee on June 16, 2017, 11:21:46 AM
Tomorrow's the day, and I finished three more last minute additions for tomorrow's Pulp Alley scenario at Origins. A new leader for the "bad guys" league, Annalisse (from Savage Core, now sold by Warlord), a platybelodon (by DeeZee and will represent a plot point peril, then stay on the board as a non-player character, rushing anyone who comes within 12"), and a fern tree (which is a Safari Ltd.  toy which I have attempted to paint and landscape):

The original fern tree model looks like this:
I gave it a priming coat of gray gesso, which seems to have no problem adhering to this shiny rubbery-plastic surface, then added color from there as normal. I decided to go this route because the green trunk of the original model didn't seem quite right: all the photos I saw of this type of tree show the normal grey/grey-brown trunk.

Dave, thank you so much for all your continued support! I have a new t-shirt to wear and I mounted and framed two of your rules-cover posters that you sent me for display. And I am extremely grateful that you folks got the extra Ultra-Inviso bases to me - plus the brand-new Horror and Fortune card sets! - well in advance of this convention!  :D

I just have one more task tonight to get ready: I'm converting ALL my character figures for the game with Ultra-Inviso bases. And tell Mila that I'm going to have Pulp Girl as the leader of my I. R. E. S. league this time...Doc Flynn has requested some time off!

And consider me honored!  :D

Of interest: last year I did two games of Pulp Alley at the same convention, and the players in this year's scenario who ran the I.R.E.S. and Neanderthals were the winners of last year's contests. In the Lost World scenario they used the exact same strategies that they had won with last year: one charging headlong after the main plot point and the other trying to gather up multiple minor plot points.

I was unsure about having the plot-point perils come to life as character foes (cave bear, sabre-tooth tiger, and axebeak), but it turned out well and the players loved the extra challenges! The critters put up a great fight, and few player characters emerged unscathed!

Not a lot of combat between characters compared to some of our other games, and casualties were low with, as I recall, only two characters knocked out. Of course, four characters went down on the final turn and we didn't bother rolling health checks....probably should have, just for fun.  lol

Now the Lost World scenario at Origins was very different in this regard, but that story remains to be told...   >:D
Title: Re: The Lost World: First AAR Pg 3 Origins sneak preview Pg 4
Post by: oabee on July 19, 2017, 11:18:26 AM
Here's a sneak preview of the setup for the subsequent scenario at Origins in June.  The sabre-tooth tiger skull is the Inititative Marker (got it at Hobby Lobby, of all places), and Penelope is smack in the center of the table in the center of the Neanderthal village. Things have changed a bit...

The two large dice trays are from the Dog Might Dragon Tray Kickstarter. Also on display are samples from the highly popular Dog Might Components Collectors Kickstarter that just ended. Mike at the Dog Might booth lent me these prototypes to try out. The players instinctively kept all the game counters safely in the CoCos throughout the game, which greatly cut down on the inevitable clutter!

Here's one closer up (notice the magnets):

Wow! Gorgeous table!

Who makes those tan cliff/hills you have set up?

Got' em on eBay back in September and October of 2016, and don't know if they are currently available: search for "Ellie-Bo Rock Formation Handpainted Polyresin Aquarium." They are from the UK.

The mat is by F.A.T. Mats at Frontline Gaming. Their website no longer shows the F.A.T. Mats, showing a line called FLG Mats, so I don't think the mat I used in the game is still available.  :'(

And thanks for your fine words!

Sorry I missed you, Mike..I could have used you! The miniatures wargaming presence at Origins seems to be waning: I set up next to a nice guy doing a Weird War II/zombie game and no one signed up for either of our games! I did a quick recruiting job and got three boardgaming passers-by plus my GM no-show neighbor to play and the fellas had just a great game with great fun for all! Never saw such an offensive, intelligent use of Fortune Cards. AAR will appear in this space in the next couple of days, if my wife gives me enough time.  lol

OK, I think I found the F.A.T. Mats: they are available now on the TableWar website:

http://www.tablewar.com/the-f-a-t-mat/

When I first saw a picture of this mat I wasn't sure about those brown spots, but with all the terrain down on the board they resemble pathways or bare spots and I find it looks good with this scenario.

Heya - did you ever make a Pulp Alley tee-shirt? Got any pics?

Here's the first one I had made in May 2016 for Drums At the Rapids:

And here's the one I had made for Origins this year (a really terrible selfie with the statue of Arnold Schwarzenegger in the background outside the Columbus Convention Center):

If you folks out there are wondering: Dave gave me written permission to make these shirts for my Pulp Alley convention gigs.  ;)

Drehna, Oona, and Nolahna are all Savage Core, which you can find at Warlord Games and at Arcane Scenery and Models.

Aleena is Reaper's Zala Natar Huntress (#03559).

And the Snake Priestess is from Forge of Ice by Alxbates, who lists all his wonderful stuff here:

Enjoy!

Finally  o_o here is the AAR from the Pulp Alley Lost World scenario held at Origins back in June.

And there's much more! A PDF of all seven pages (enlarged for easy reading :D) is here:

http://wrgmr.com/lost%20world%202.pdf

Enjoy!

EDIT: My four players were all experienced gamers and took to the game, and the SPIRIT of the game, instantly. Actual playing time was just two hours! Here one of the players--I think his name is Jared, but I'm not sure!--discovers that the initiative marker makes a great chapeau!

Another interesting thing about the Origins game...this is the first time I've had players use bursts not to attack, but to block line of sight. Anyone else experienced, or done, that?

Thanks for any help and keep up the good work!

I use Comic Life 3:

Free 30-day trial, then $29.99. A bit of a learning curve (at least for me  :D), be sure to download the manual.

A stonking good read and a great table. I am hugely impressed by how cleanly you have attached the figures to the clear bases, not a trace of fogging. May I ask you to share your secret.

A stonking good read and a great table. I am hugely impressed by how cleanly you have attached the figures to the clear bases, not a trace of fogging. May I ask you to share your secret.

Apply the glue sparingly: I put on a dab then wipe gently on paper (or my finger ;D, which is not recommended, but I sometimes do it anyway) so there is just a film of glue on the mini. Plan your placement carefully ahead of time. Try to apply pressure straight down on the base until the mini fully attaches, which could take 15-30 seconds. My most common mistake is letting the mini slide slightly on the base, leaving a smear. I fully confess that for every successful base attachment I seem to screw one up and have to start with a fresh one.  :?

Choose your super glue carefully: not all are created equally. Here in the states I have settled on Gorilla Super Glue as my glue of choice (the liquid, not the gel). It seems to have a quick set-up time for this application.

If you're taking your game on the road, as I do, be sure to pack the super glue in case you have a mini detach.

And of course, I'm using Mila's Ultra-Inviso Bases, available only at the Pulp Alley online store. Used to use Litko's clear acrylic bases, but even 1.5 mm was too thick, so I'm switching everything over to Mila's bases. You may have noticed that some of the minis in the first Lost World scenario used the Litko bases, but all were re-based on Ultra-Inviso bases for the second scenario.

Thank you for the excellent advice. I have been using Loctite, but I must try the Gorilla glue. Yes, Mila's bases are excellent.

Actually, looking back at the photos it seems that the Ultra-Inviso bases aren't as prone to fogging as the Litko acrylic bases. Notice the slight fogging at Doc Flynn's feet in this now-famous photo.

Title: Pulp Alley's The Lost World of Lemuria: Death Rides the Sky Feb 26 page 6
Post by: oabee on February 26, 2018, 11:04:42 PM
Returned to the Lost World on Saturday Feb 23 at Wintercon2018 put on by the Detroit Metro Gamers. The scenario was Death Rides the Sky from the Lost World of Lemuria.

A full AAR will follow in good time, but in the meantime, here are some photos. The outlander Leagues were Doc Flynn's crack International Research and Exploration Society team and a Guild of Thirteen unit (called Forschungsgruppe) led by the famed archaeologist Dr. Kossinna. Two native Leagues were represented: Aleena's Amazons and Drekk's Neanderthals.

The major Plot Point is the orb in the temple atop this old volcanic hill. The hill is a Lemax Spooky Town Hill Top Display Platform #74636 which has been modified to be gaming friendly. For scenario purposes only the upper level was perilous and the scenario rules for climbing the hill were in effect for characters coming from any direction (i.e., there was no benefit from going up the stairs!). The original looks like this:

Another view of the hill later in the game. The Pteranodons are from Andrew Mae's Antediluvian Miniatures. I used minis instead of circling markers for scenic effect. When a Pteranodon was used as an NPC we put a sprig of lichen on the base, like the guy in the lower right.

Starting positions. This is a 4' by 4' game mat, so the yellow dice mark the corners of the 3' by 3' gaming surface called for in the scenario. Leagues may deploy within 6" of the corners.

Thuvia the Snake Priestess lets loose her Snake Breath ability to unleash a Long Burst on Kossinna.

Elsa Shneider of the Kossinna's League attempts a minor plot point, the Terror Bird eggs. I used minis to symbolically represent the Perils at Plot point and they had no other effect. This confused one of my regular players: "No Rodger, you can't shoot at the Cave Bear!"

Drekk attempts to seized the Wooden Idol, another minor Plot Point.

Doc Flynn comes up one success short on the treasure chest minor Plot Point, so Sidekick Tobias Turnbull gives it a go. Will he succeed?!?

Aleena attempts to retrieve the journal from Dr. Blackthorn's decaying and dismembered body. The Peril, a charging Platybelodon, will give her fits. Will she ever seize the Plot Point?

Professor Eva unleashes her Tesla Arc Pistol on an attacking Rhamphorhynchus, catching a pair of Neanderthals in the burst!

It starts to get interesting at the top of the hill as the Leagues jockey for the Major Plot Point. At the moment Drekk has the edge: will he prevail?!?  >:D

Details to follow.....

Post by: oabee on March 25, 2018, 09:34:03 PM
The second convention scenario of Death Rides the Sky was held on March 17, 2018 at Pro or Con Battlefields in Livonia, Michigan. Here is an after action report of that game. The occaision was marked by the first time I have Forgotten to Bring Something Important To A Convention since I started doing convention games: I forgot my deck of Fortune Cards!  :o

Fortunately, the con was held at an Elks Club, and the kitchen staff serving goodies that day allowed me access to the office copy machine, so I made up a set of cards right out of the Pulp Alley rule book, and was able to carry on. Whew.  ;D

Great, great fun...even though the ending was one-sided. All the players enjoyed themselves immensely, embracing the spirit of the rules in a fine manner.

Great photos and a well written adventure! I don't think I have ever witnessed a character as lucky as Gustav Kossinna.

Here's Kossinna's card [the Swordsman skill is the same as Fierce...it just illustrates why he's so good at Brawling!]:

Just to review: On the turn in question , he had to pass the following Extreme Perils: 1. activating in an extremely perilous area (hilltop); 2. moving within 6" of a pterosaur circling marker; and 3. attempting the major plot point. Then he had to roll three successes with any skill to take the plot point. I don't recall the particulars except that he rolled four Brawl dice to score three successes for the Major Plot Point, but it was a combination of some fairly easy random challenges and some excellent dice rolling. Also note that in the prior turn he had climbed the cliff, another Extreme Peril, and exchanged ranged fire with the Amazon leader without suffering a hit.

And thanks for the kind words!

Thanks again for all the kind comments!

The temple in the first scenario I bought from Mini Monsters:

I'm in the States, and I have ordered from them direct and--usually--via eBay. Shipping is very reasonable and service is great. They have a great array of products, and someday I'll figure out how to use their Orc terrain in a Pulp Alley scenario.  :D

They also have some matching columns to go with the temple:

Timmy!:

You can find the temple, plus some other things I use, like the terrain bases with circular insets, at Worldsmith Industries:

https://worldsmithindustries.com/collections/ancient-ruins

There are a couple of other jungle/lost world terrain bits I put together new for this scenario, but don't show up well in the AARs. First are these columns from Things From the Basement (https://www.thingsfromthebasement.com/store/c32/Inspired_by_Frostgrave%3A_Ghost_Archipelago.html):

The bushy mini-palms I found at a craft store here in the States:

The other is a ruined tower I found in the aquarium section of a local pet store. I drybrushed the tree with a light grey-brown, and added some medium green coarse turf where vines had been painted on. The rest of the tower is as is.

These photos do not do justice to the Cigar Box Jungle Floor game mat. It looks washed out, and is a poor representation of its actual appearance. The photo on their web site is much more representative. Here is a detail:

The mat is a fleece cloth mat, and the detail is not as crisp as in the photo, but is still very nice indeed.
