Title: Continuous stream of 20mm kits (Feb 6th - Old Guard )
Post by: Gunbird on May 29, 2017, 01:55:03 AM
To make a dent in my 1/72 and 1/76 kit collection and to push myself to get stuff done for the painting table, I've started a 30 day challenge. And in this case it's a Build 1 kit per day - challenge (the goal is not to paint them or fully upgrade them with extras, just to build kits and salvage scrapped kits and put them back into action).

The focus is on WW2, but some of the items will be civillian or used in later conflicts as well. Just ignore the modern stuff you see, ok?  :D

22 may, Day #1 (Ace 52-K Early 85mm AA gun). Gun is built, based and magnetised so I can use it on a guntruck as well for future conflicts. Needs some filler on the magnetic mount and make 4 wheelhubs to copy the photograph of a 1945 German one.

23 may, Day #2 (S-Models BMP-1) 2nd hand model, partially idssasembled and put together again, magnetised the turret, and need to build a new hatch.

24 may, Day #3 (First to Fight Polski Fiat). 2 models at once, very nice kit but weak wheel mounts, so used plasticcard to make em better. 1 done, 1 halfway.

25 may, Day #4 (Airfix Rescue Vehicle set - firetruck). 2nd hand incomplete model, partially built. Incomplete fire installations removed en replaced by a Plastic Soldier Company rear end, cab dissaembled, rooftop filled in and rebuilt. Ready for paint.

26 may, Day #5 (Dapol Watertower). Arrived this morning, built straight away with modifications to enhance its usefulness. Also very suitable for 28mm due to its size.

27 may, Day #6 (Matchbox Monty's Caravan). Arrived this morning, made a  mockup with cardboard for the Bison, enjoyed a free evening and spent most of evening #7 on it. Just needs a base, concrete texture and a tarp, and some clean up.

7 kits started in 7 days, 3 of them finished. Now to keep this up for the other 3 weeks  :D

If I told my Mrs I was spending the next thirty days making models,I'd be on the side of a milk carton in no time. So for that reason alone I salute your minerals !
I'm glad you posted the water tower ,as I'd toyed with the idea of one for 28mm, but chickened out . Now ones on the way to me(popped on to eBay before I posted)
Will keep an eye on this thread.
Good luck.

Mark.

excellent, a different and valuable challenge. Also for me, it is like an Advent Calendar (for December) -as I can wake up each day, open the thread and there is a new kit to look at :-)

Good luck and good building.
Been stuck on the same model for a week now.
Just can not finish it.

I have been fighting with a sloppily moulded Hydra APC for the last two days (note to self, rebuilding track is not part of my skill set...).

Completing a model a day would be amazing.

Thx guys. My wife is kind enough to leave me be after 19:00, and I can work till about 0:00. I tend to keep the PC turned off now so I'm not too distracted and just go at it till I get fed up with it, and then work some more on finshing the previous models. If I would sit here all day I too would end up on a milk carton.

Todays update (day #8, May 29th).

So, 5 items done, and 4 WIP's.

I so need to do this.....but I would need a month off work  :-[

Turn off the pc and phone in the evening, grab a cuppa and do a Dory (just keep building, just keep building....)

Another update, this time I delved deep into my boxes of resins, set aside quite a few that can be sold off and started work on the rest. Also based a ton of miniatures. 20 days in, 10 more days to go!

Partially built and painted Airfix Spitfire I I got for free in a lot of cheap kits, ripped it apart, magnetised the prop, inserted a flight plug and reglued  it. Only to find it is not in the BEF list  :bye:  Well, Counts-as-Hurricane it is then!

2 SandS Renaults (finally built and based, need GS work)

3 SandS Toyota Hi Ace vans (finally built and in need of GS work)

Sgts Mess green and Outhouses. Superb castings, highly reccomended. Undecided if I will base these or not.

Sgts Mess WW1 French memorial. I like it so much I will get the WW1 British memorial as well for Sea Lion.

Sgts Mess 1393 Generic Bus. How I wish all casts could be this good from other manufacturers.....Perfect for UK Home Guard, Sea Lion and VBCW. Just mind the front wheels, those need some work to get right. Minor GS work needed.

Frontline Delivery Van. Well, yeah, Frontline, cheap, but always needs a lot of work to get right. Not sure what it is hauling as the rear axle seems very overloaded. Needs GS work. Perfect as generic civillian truck.

Red Star (?) M47 tank. Trackwork isn't that good, magetised the turret and drilled the barrel. Is going straight into my Yugoslavia box, after some minor GS work.

ICM Zil-157 shelter truck I built ages ago for my since sold Iraqi army. The base had melted due to contact to bad resin, so rebased it. Need to find some headlights and a pair or stairs for the back, and make a new antenna for it. Not sure yet if for TW:2K or for Iran-Iraq.

Steady progress on the T-55 turret and T-54 wreck. need to fill in the holes on the 55 turret and built a (mobile) bunker box for it, then build another one so I have one for TW:2K and modern day Iraq. How I wish PSC did 20mm T-55's....that would be a godsend!

Ignore the 28mm stuff, but a nice Police phone booth from Sgts Mess as well as a cold case.

A gift from Taylor, these RH Models Africans will go right into my Mogadishu lot.

A Foundry Partisan group. The model repetition is a shame, but the LMG team is great, I could use a few more to convert to a Bren, MG-42 and DP LMG team for various locations and dates and for Volkssturm use as well. Might pick up 2 more sets at Crisis this year, if I can find the funds.

I found a bag of Britannia Taliban I had traded with a friend a while back and based the lot of them. I now have enough Taliban to do a Northern Alliance vs Taliban game. Just need to paint the lot.....

Ripped the large magnet from  the Bison and replaced it with a new, smaller, but stronger one, and now the bunker sits down properly, also concreted it and tarped the front.

None of the resin vehicles count atm as they all need GS work. When that is done, they count for the grand total. Busy busy busy :)

After a week messing about with a new-ish PC, I'm back in the building saddle:

Just built my first unit for my 8th Army for Afrika, a Italian truck for use as a Comms Relay Truck. Just need to build the antenna set up and a generator.

Also built 2 HäT Skoda 75mm Mountain guns with the intention for my Partisans, only to find out the Gebirgsjagers used them as well. So the ones with gunshield will now be German and the ones without (that I still need to build) will become Partisan.

Also lucked out with a few lot purchases. FInally found me a Lysander for my Brits, plus a Auster and 2 Pipers for Normandy but those are still in the mail.

Now back to my studies, I have an exam coming up.

My first time using Photo etch and it wasn't hard at all. Very nice S-Model kit this.

Love Somuas!  FYI PSC has the T55 planned in 1/72 now because the 15mm one is proving popular....I read it in one of their Mailing list updates

I know, I've been pushing the idea with Will since the Crisis show in 2016 as everybody and their dog has T-55's. It's currently on pre order and if it gets 200 pre orders it is a go.

Thx Vodkafan and James :)

Small update on what I have been building lately....

(https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-ldmUmJ72INE/WY5TBZf3h6I/AAAAAAAAEHQ/XZJOGA8KgXI6_d80XZGS_bU0yYI5H8G9gCLcBGAs/s1600/20821146_10156725955940620_556551465_o.jpg) Working on a S&S Hi Ace van using some parts from other kits. I now need to find and make boxes, bedrolls, suitcases and 1-2 goats so this will work for the Middle East, Afrika and TW:2K

(https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-UZ68cBfWc8c/WYzwXzwyAUI/AAAAAAAAEG4/D0BYQFfcdGs8FCqVm5BO-TiZC0tpjyYOACLcBGAs/s1600/20170811_013142.jpg) Dinged up the Somua and gave it a steel barrel.

I've did the same for the 7Tp and the L3/33. Banged up the L3/33 a bit more and added some stowage and details. Now needs a German commander and a bucket.

(https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-FWPzR2S744U/WYpHa09RFQI/AAAAAAAAEGI/-s-YhxCOb9c2bDwDbzUM5jEzgNKU1uNmgCLcBGAs/s1600/20747028_10156711308230620_1177006256_o.jpg) The T-40 needs some PE and a commander, preferably one with binos.

(https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-zCMy6nErju4/WYpHdp2GD4I/AAAAAAAAEGM/TzfwvCOAxJIjn1XMchGAqbx-q_NckHbegCLcBGAs/s1600/20707092_10156714218270620_1928622958_o.jpg) Started to build this kit. Tbh, it is way overpriced for the quality you get, but it does come with complete engines that I can use to add to wrecks and I got it at half price anyway so no loss there.

(https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-wIN218c07lc/WYpIgnh1HXI/AAAAAAAAEGc/9PD-1mRvB6wC9bpkGHnucnAfMbwuCIJewCLcBGAs/s1600/20170807_034207.jpg) These guys are for the PLO, but on the backburner right now, no rush to get them ready plus they need tuned brass barrels anyway and I cannot afford those right now.

(https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-lu3iC7IbOm4/WYpJlSShhII/AAAAAAAAEGo/jcBC8k4o6j0LaItygI7TH8AQEJyuGQGLQCLcBGAs/s1600/20170808_150956.jpg) And I removed the big whiteboard and sold itas I wasn't really using it, and the funds will pay for a new (secondhand) Billy cabinet and some shelving.

And I really, really need to make a bunch of these.....

Received a box of H0 junk today, and started salvaging. Repurposed a Diesel tank as a tank for a used and abused Water tanker.

Once all of the glue has set I will rough it up properly and add a tap to the back. Bit of a fantasy model, but will work fine in a  UN convoy, Afghanistan, Afrika, or Post Apoc I guess....once painted.

The anti Partisan L3/33 is almost ready for paint, just need to find the bloody bucket. Cut a AB fig in half for a commnander. The fig cost me more then the tank!

Also based up my entire YW-531 collection for the Iraqi army (that is what you see in the back of the pic)

Received in the mail, with a considerable detour, 2 boxes of S-Models R35 light tanks. I now have 5 of those in total, 2 will be grey, 2 will be in Dunkelgelb and one a burnt out wreck, and all of these will fight the US Paratroops in Normandy.

Still not feeling like painting anything, but did invite the guys over today for hobby and dinner, and at the end of the day I have my first 95cm's of metal sheet fencing.

Just scraps of plasticcard, matches and cardboard. Need to sand the bases, grit them, and a file a small groove in the top of the poles so I can glue on some barbed wire for good measure. Seeing how little 95cm's is on the table, I've decided to spend the rest of the weeks evenings with the radio on and just churning out fence and writing down a tutorial as well. After that I'll get cracking on producing a variety of gates for various purposes so this will fit in afrikca, the Middle East, Vietnam, Russia and everywhere else I want to pick a fight.

Thx Vodkafan :)

Added 8 T sections to the lot, adding another 120cm of fence, which brings the total up to just shy of 6 metres.

And it all fits nicely into one of my designated 20mm scenery drawers... Mind you, 6 metres of the stuff doesn't look like much.

Next up, doors, big doors, signs and more 10cm short straight sections.

Wasn't very succesful with finding gate photographs, so gave up, grabbed a project box and based all my Dragons Teeth that I have for D-Day and the Siegfried line, did some tests to see what worked best for me, and made 40 inches plus some corners.

When and if I can afford it, I will invest in 4 more boxes for a additional 40 inches, and make 2 gates, 2 end pieces, 1 destroyed section and 1 bulldozed section. Well, maybe double the last 2. And maybe 4 end pieces. And....

The wrinkly tin? Paper craft stuff, just get the cardboard labelled as Fine instead of Medium. Works great for 20 and 15mm, pretty cheap as well.

The entire thing? Just ran some free styrofoam through a foamcutter for the shapes, pinned and glued a few of those together and just let my imagination run wild (after a very sobering Google search for "slums"). Now just trying what works, what not, how much time it takes etc. One coat of slightly watered down Mod Podge is doing a fine job at toughening everything up.

Doing a bit of modding. S-Model T-26 as T-26 and OT-130. Spot the error I made.

There's three versions of the flamethrower tank (one of the great things about the T-26 series) - you need to shift the flamer to its left and add an MG? I had to check that (and I don't know if I'm right), as it looks completely fine.

Post by: Gunbird on June 20, 2018, 01:35:49 PM
I'm used to tanks having a  turret basically centred. Took me a bit to see it, but the regular T-26 has the turret on the left side, and the OT series has the turret on the right side. Oh well, lesson learned, I doubt the OT-130 will see a lot of action anyway, but at least I have it.

I know this s a secondary source at best but these work in progress shots do show some left handed flamethrowers.

Thanks, but sadly the real OT-134 has the flame projector in the hull and a normal 45mm gun turret. Oh well, one day I will build another correct hull and it will all be ok :)
Title: Re: Continuous stream of 20mm kits (NOW: Back in the saddle)
Post by: Rich H on June 20, 2018, 10:52:26 PM
the Finns used some right hand turret mounts with 45mm gun turrets and added a Soumi SMG to the hull.
Also some of the vickers 6 tonners were right hand turrets.

The turret was shifted to the right to make room for the fuel tanks also they are one man turrets.
The 45mm was a two man turret.

I think the Left hand OT on the Rubicon site is a mistake... there is a LH OT-130 at Kubinka but it's probably a mashup of bits or a teletank.

Ah, yes. There are some labeling issues on the original post. Sorry.

Note to self: do own research ^__^.

The TT26 teletank had a left hand turret and a flamethrower in the 45mm Mantlet. (Zaloga T26 page 27).

Starting with a incomplete Matchbox Panzer 2C, which now has a new lease of life as a MG Bunker.

And more progress on my S-Model German H38 for anti Partisan duty - stowage box from the PSC Honey sprue and a Trench skid from the S-Model French H38. Needs some chain and a commander.

Dragged a older conversion from the WIP box and started uparmouring it with sandbags. Will need a ton of work before it is done....Zimmerit, 2 crew, personal weapons, large cargo space on the back with munitions, and a towed fueltrailer

Another last thing before we leave in the morning...WIP dug in KV-1E for Kursk.

So tonight I did something a bit different.

One of the worst models I had the pleasure of assembling. Flash, excess metal between the tracks, mould lines, incomplete cast rack covering the engine. Rmoved the armour plates from the drivers area, sanded it down and replaced with flat plates from plasticcard. Britannia car passenger trimmed and modded as a driver (just needs some goggles). Added the missing horn next to the headlight.

Final details, then paint, and I have a new Barbarossa 37mm/50mm AT gun tractor.

Picked up some VC MMG teams for Vietnam to convert into M-60 teams, only to realize I should have been looking at LMG teams for that. Oops.

Well, when life gives you lemon, I make Partisans.

(https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-UpLc5fy7rx0/W-K8QAbT4yI/AAAAAAAAFUw/WcR4JF2x4LwLLy_MlxmbwC3zvSaOz88VgCLcBGAs/s1600/45498076_1863915996995946_2793525842615992320_n.jpg)

New head, some greenstuff, condensor can....just needs some cloth belt and a upright sight. Now I only have to convert a MG-34 for them.

Also got the Vietnam Command Bunker and removed 1/3rd of the resin from it.

(https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-kkXsF29-5sk/W-K_OZZrqrI/AAAAAAAAFVA/VhRNPuPjz08OZ2YA_FIQ5Z8V31fTuKy1ACLcBGAs/s1600/45401783_1069542669872673_4658238374379782144_n.jpg)

So I can rework it to my liking. For starters, it will be lined with oil drums, and get a blastwall in front on the door. The radio antenna will be on a slot on base.

With my thumb surgically removed from my butt, I'm getting more done even with a constant pain in my hands. As long as I don't have to lift, or clamp down on anything with my hands it's quite manageable (unless the exam at the hospital this afternoon tells me otherwise, it feels ok-ish)

Made 3 rows of toilets.

Grabbed a box of Desert Buildings that have been sitting there for 3-4 years now and airbrushed a basecoat and did a test with zenithal lighting (?) a wall to see if I like it. Want to get them done and move on to the rest.
