Title: Florian's Oldhammer Stuff (Resurrection October 2022 - Rackham Confrontation)
Post by: DivisMal on June 06, 2017, 11:05:20 AM
Hello fellow LAFers. In this thread I'll present you some of my Fantasy collection. It's mostly old GW and Rackham 28/32mm with 15mm coming in from Copplestone, Demonworld & Co.

I'm a thematic collector. I own quite a lot of stuff, but nearly no playable armies. Therefore if I play, I like to play systems with a low model count. SoBH, Mordheim etc.

Apart from GW's Old World, I'm very much into Moorcock and Conan.

Gentlemen, please excuse my aweful photography, and I hope, you enjoy the following.

One of me ladz for an Orc warband. He is still missing his shield.

Another Oldhammer Orc. He's somehow angry and doesn't care so much for armor and stuff.

Grom the Paunch. He's got a speeding ticket on his chariot, which he cannot pay (damn gobbo police!), and therefore joins the fight on foot. Needs some more lights on the helmet.

Orc with polearm. He's a really cunnin' git, yet is also missing his shield.

It's so difficult to get those plastic shields for Oldhammer minis. On ebay their price is only slightly less than gold, it seems.

Another Orc without shield. This one is a pretty clever one-piece-casting that still looks pretty dynamic and looks week even next to new minis.

A still glorious Rackham Orc, painted by shades and lazes only over a grayscale foundation.

Nasty Black Orc in armor.

Frenzied Orc boy. I think, he'z just been told, that GW doesn't produce metal orcs with character anymore in favor of legions of poorly designed plastic orcs.... ;)

Armored orc with heavy morning star (flail).

And finally an orc in chainmail holding either a spear or a ballista bolt.

Always good to see a oldhammer stuff.

You can get resin shields from other places though I think? Must be something out there that fits the bill.

Great stuff! I like the Perry orc (with the club) the best. I always find Perry orcs much easier to paint than Adams ones, for some reason: something to do with the facial detail, I think. Did you experience anything similar?

For shields, it might be worth looking at the GW beastman ("gor") ones: they're the right size and suitably hung with gruesome trophies. You'd have to cut down the bosses, though. Example here (http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=77384.msg1058672#msg1058672) (sorry, the shots of the shield could be better!). They're relatively easy to pick up on eBay if you look for "beastman shields".

Great selection of old Citadel classics.
You have really brought the character out of them.

I like the greyscale shaded orc.
It is a technique that I have used in the past and something I should use more often as it is pretty effective.

Same here; the Perry orcs also have the advantage, that no one seems to produce similar sculpts anymore, while the Adams orcs have been copied all over the places, it seems.

Thanks for the advice with the Beastmen shields. I didn't know they would work that well; need to get some.

PS
Awesome painting on that orc, dude. It's from the Claymore Saga, isn't it? That game, Hero Quest and the old Fantasy Warriors box made up 90% of the wargaming collection in my group back then.

Thanks! I know there are some nice ones available in Resin, and they are much easier to paint. I recently obtained a couple of Oldhammer shields from a Kickstarter.

Nevertheless, one of the challenges is to design a shield out of nothing, and the new ones are all sculped. While this is actually much better, I'd love to test how my skills have advanced it nthe last 25 years and do some freehands.

Thank you! Maybe this summer, I'll go more into RT and also try to paint your let's call them People of the Sands. Greyscale painting is pretty effective, I learned it from Delany King's marvellous blog. She is much better, but I was astonished just how well the shades fall using this technique!

Dont forget, the undercolour does not have to be grey.
Here are some Iron Claw Space Pirates getting the 'sepia-scale' treatment (one got 'green-scale' as he was going to be finished differently to the rest...) using various shades of brown...

Try out different shades for a slightly different finish.

Thanks. I'll have to try that. Please show the pictures when they are finished. I'm very intrigued to see how the undercoat will affect the overall model.

They can be found here...

...with closer shots over the next few pages.
The were finished off with most areas highlighted with normal painting to achieve a brighter result but the idea is the same.
It certainly speeds things up as it would have taken much longer to paint twenty figures in the 'normal' fashion.

Thanks! Yes, the long-faced Orcs were pretty unique and now that no-one, except the early Rackham guys ever dared to copy them, they have become something like an endangered species!

And now for something completely different. Chaos, my second Oldhammer love.

Metal miniatures that have tons of character and scream Iron Maiden or at least Judas Priest  :D :) ;)

Why don't they make such tongue in cheek models anymore but only blood-gurgling Bloodkillers of the Skullgod of Blood!

First the super quirky guy in a bone armor! Take that Diablo 2!  lol

My Chaos sorcerors. The scarecrow is from Rackham. One of the best models ever made IMO, the sorcerer is very old Oldhammer.

Rackham hunter of darkness. I like to use him as a Solomon Kane. He's a bit too huge and towers over most GW humans, but the model is stunning!

Love all the new editions.
Back when Chaos was 'proper', I loved that period too and still have a few figures from the 80's that I will not be parting with.
Love that scarecrow too, he is great!

;D :D ;D when Chaos wore pink tights and crazy haircuts! Nowadays, the models may be even more detailed but it's often (but not always) too much blood ans gore (Khorne) or pox and gore (Nurgle).

Over the weekend I did  "renovations" on some old Rackham models I found. The paintjobs are by now 13-15 years old, but an overly enthusiastic application of gloss varnish by past-Florian preserved the models quite well.

I must say, I'm impressed how well the sculpts have aged. I can't still find anything comparable in the Fantasy sector.

Added a few highlights, repaired damages and I hope I need not be ashamed of them.

All belong to the Griffins of Akkylania, one of my five (!) Confrontation warbands. It's really a pity that the rules sucked so much...

First an inquisitor champion.

I always have a soft spot for the Rackham figures, and you're quite right: there isn't much that can objectively compare to them. Nice work on the orcs and griffons, they are two of my favorite factions.

Thank you! Rackham models have a certain style that IMO no one has ever achieved. It's an elegance that GW never aimed at (or was unable to do?) combined with realistic proportions in humans and many funny little details. With non-humans there is also so much character in the faces. I really adore the orcs for this.

Great stuff! Spooktalker's no-highight method's working well. I think that's actually a chaos thug - and the samurai guy a chaos warrior. If I remember correctly, the latter is from the second slottabased range of chaos warriors - when they got (for the most part) big and chunky.  They make nice hobgoblins in any case!

Then I realized that for a Chaos army, I need not correlate colors with the materials I painted, but rather could go for an effect of 80s heavy metal covers. It was liberating indeed and is certainly very enjoyable.

That is another sizeable chunk added to the growing horde.
Keep up this rate and you will have conquered the Olde World in no time at all.

...you know why I like May, so much? Not only is there my B-day, but also lots of religious & national holidays (at least here where I live) and so I do get more painted. Also in early spring, when the days get longer, but its still too cold to sit outside and enjoy the sun, I get more productive.

I must say, though, that currently the 15mm bug has bitten me and my Oldhammer projects have been put in stasis again...

Great work on those chaos creatures - and a nicely Moorcockian range of colours!

Good to see that old Trish Morrison beastman (on the right of the last photo) as well; I think those are the best beastmen ever done.

Thank you so much! That was indeed one of the main sources of inspiration. I still consider Moorcock's Elric and Corum novels among the best stuff that was ever written in Fantasy.

Btw: I never thanked you, but I am currently enjoying Lyoness in the train to work - and you mentioned it in the other thread on old school knights etc. It's really great.

The Trish Morrison beastman has an elegance in the sculpt that few modern models achieve. It's a single piece with no additional parts, yet looks extremely lively and, what I like most, does not look like a gym-bunny on steroids. Chaos needs more gloom and desperation (apart from colored armor and leggings)!

After a short break, I finished some Age of Sigmar models from the Shadespire game.

The minis are absolute brilliant. I decided to go for grimdark AoS, using a lot of rust, dirt and blood effects.

I was able to take some pictures in the morning. Here they come.

And the leader sigmarine from the same set. The models are very dynamic, aren’t cluttered with details and I really, really enjoyed painting them!

And the last model from the set a female Stormcast Eternal. I didn’t like the head and swapped it for a head from a High Elf archer.

That is quite a collection of BEAUTIFULLY painted Old Gems. Although I have a weakness for the Green Guys, they are all WONDERFULLY DONE creations.

Thank you, sir! The green guys also have a special place in my own heart. It’s indeed a shame, that GW transformed them into muscle-packed, short-legged monsters with little brain. I fondly remember those „dead clevur“ boyz from the old fluff, hur hur...

Thanks! The models were a lot of fun to paint....but they take so much longer than my normal 15s that I rarely start painting after work, so this thread continues slowly.

We are moving from our flat and this weekend I am busy packing all my precious models. I hope to be unpacking them in a month.

However, while I did this, I managed a few shots of some models, which I have become particularly fond over the years and took some photos.

This is an orc pirate captain from Freebooter Miniatures. I have owned the minis for some years now, they’re awesome. Full of character and lovely little details!

And my absolute favorites! Two more goblin pirates modelled by the awesome Werner Klocke (who lived for a long time in my hometown Bottrop), but these are not part of the Freebooter‘s Fate range iirc. One should be a Reaper mini and the other is from the Goblin Aid project from a few years ago!

That is a great collection of both Fimir (wonderful old skool classics amongst them!) and some seriously characterful pirates.
 :-* :-*

You really must add the old Empire powder monkey to your collection.
I think I may have one. If it surfaces I will give you a shout.
 ;)

Thanks! That would be totally awesome. It would totally fit into this group!

As I said, we are currently moving and after an odyssey of 12 year where we lived in five different towns (and nine different places) we both managed to find permanent positions and I will have a nice, large hobby room!

One of the projects I’ll finish are my pirates. And I still habe the old megabloks model of the Black Pearl.

We’ve taken a few days off to go to the North Sea. That means, no painting for me, but I thought, I would post some older models from my collection.
Here is an absolute stunning monster: a Proteus Clone from the Scorpions of Dirz. The model is produced on a limited run by Cernunnos Studio, a small scale business from France run by a single person with great enthusiasm.

I usually don’t collect Dirz, but when I saw this one, I knew I needed to get one. It’s useful for Fantasy, PostApoc or even SciFi settings.
I can’t paint in a way to do the fantastic sculpt justice, but I enjoyed myself nevertheless and the little brute sees action in various skirmish games.

I really like that Dirz clone but sadly the $90 price tag is beyond me. It is great to see new Dirz imagined pieces, my favourite of the Confrontation forces.

Thank you, Sir Shvantselot! Most of my models are long oop and I just collect them to have what I could not afford when I was younger and these were the pinnacle of cool!  lol

It’s a high price, but it’s Canadian dollars, so it’s considerably cheaper (though not a bargain). I just had „him“ as a present for myself and really enjoyed painting the model. I have enough models and realized I don’t really need more models, I have enough, but models I enjoy 😉

That said, armies with large model counts I usually do in 15mm …

These have been shown before, but now they’re finished and finally based!  o_o o_o I don’t like basing so much and usually put it into a far far away future.  lol

Two Orcs of Bran-O-Kor from Rackham. Awesome models. The right one is a champion character, Vorak, the Unfailing iirc. The left one is actually a one piece cast. Bloody awesome and a joy to paint! As you might see, I was in my yellow phase at that time :)

A devourer flesh-eater from Rackham miniatures. Lovely model, but now that I see him, I kinda regret using the gold on the armor. Anyway, he’s going to be part if a small Devourer warband.
As a commenter to my Instagram page has suggested, he‘s gonna be the big bad guy in a khorne warband rampaging through the realms of chaos! Gonna get suitable rules out. I’m kinda in love with Of Gods and Mortals.

Another devourer fro Rackham. This should be the priest of the faction. An awesome sculpt (sadly iirc he wasn’t that good in the game).
These days he spends most of his time as a champion of slaanesh leading a small chaos warband through the borderlands. The sm-inspired design of the devourers is pretty well suited to use them as great monsters in Chaos armies. Seeing the model now, I may be reworking the armor. It’s slightly too blue.

Hey Gibby! Thanks for dropping by! I have all the first wave Temple of the West stuff on my shelf, but at the moment I don’t really find the time for it  :?

I do use Rackham models from time to time for my 15mm stuff (that’s most of the time all I can manage in the evening), Rackham goblins make excellent 15mm trolls ;) https://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=108985.msg1783584#msg1783584
