Title: The Lead Painters League Season 11 - the winners and results
Post by: Prof.Witchheimer on June 11, 2017, 11:35:58 AM
As the good Captain and the good Admiral both are “out of office”, I have been asked to perform the closing ceremony of this year’s LPL. We’d give you the leaderboard, they said, and we’d close the voting, so you just need to step to the front of the stage and make your speech. Sure, I said, I’d be happy to do that as it gives me the chance to say thank you to both guys for running the league. Cheers, guys, amazing performance from both of you, you worked together as a very well attuned team and we all much appreciate your efforts! Also, I’d like to thank to Westfalia Chris for his excellent work on further developing and maintaining of the magical Excel spread sheet with all the lists, points, pairings, leaderboard and so on.

Well, another year, another LPL, another race. 38 members, more than 300 scenes, goodness knows how many painted miniatures, I really didn’t count them and in the case that someone did, please don’t hesitate to tell us :) Anyways, I just want to say thank you to all participants for taking on this burden again and for keeping posting new teams from week to week. It’s great to see that LPL spirit doesn’t die and that we again did manage to get together a great amount of people ready to fight through the ten weeks.

And not to forget another very important part of the race, all the voters, coming week for week and giving their votes to the entries and keeping alive the show.  Thanks, guys, we appreciate every single vote of you!

And now let’s have a look at the triad of winners of Lead Painters League 11.

Third place goes to the undisputed master of free-hand painting, the brilliant Neldoreth! His ability to deliver loads of beautifully painted shields again and again was absolutely astonishing :) Top notch work, Joe!

Second place goes to the man with the most beautiful diorama quality scenes in this season, the marvelous Lt.Hazel! He displayed not only a gorgeous combination of first class painting skills but also an unmatched great sense of perspective and scenery setting. Well done, Jan!

First place goes to one of the LAF and LPL old hands, our global moderator and this time a global winner, the fabulous Captain Blood! Perfection is the word that strikes my mind when I’m trying to define the quality of his work. Everything on his scenes is right, the painting, the scenery, the highlights, the contrasts, the choice of figures and dozens of other small things and details. Virtuosic work, Richard!

Well and now that the winners are named I would like to present the very last leaderboard of the Season Eleven, prepared and sent to me by Admiral Benbow before he had left “the office“. But first I officially declare the eleventh season of the LPL concluded! I am looking forward to Season Twelve and I hope to meet you again next year on this board.

Congrats to all! As the first LPL I've had the pleasure of voting in, I've thoroughly enjoyed browsing the entries and will miss voting on Sunday evenings while I put the kids to bed. I suppose I can console myself with going through previous years.

As well as the quality and variety of entries, what struck me most was how difficult it was to choose between entries sometimes.

Thanks to the organizers for all the work running the LPL, and congrats to the winners.

There were some highly decorative shields in the entries of the top three leaderboard positions :)

Fix!

Er, I mean Well done, Captain. And everyone else who put in the hard yards. It's a real slog, I know. Once was enough for me, but I'm mighty glad others don't feel the same way, as the LPL season is always a great time of year for LAF. :)

Well done to all the painters, it's bloody hard work keeping going for the full term.

I am 15 points short, should have had the bonus in the last round.  :(

I am 15 points short, should have had the bonus in the last round.  :(

Well, sorry, but I think the rules concerning theme bonus points are perfectly clear:

"In these rounds, if you submit a new team for a bonus round that matches the bonus round's theme, your team receives an extra theme round bonus as specified below (in addition to the 10 point ‘new team’ bonus)."

As your round 10 entry has not been new, you could not get the theme bonus points.

I second the above, and thank you Prof for your efforts, and everyone else who made it possible: voters, painters, and other organizers! Thanks for running it, greatly appreciated.

Congrats to the winners, and to all of those who made it through the event and put on a great show!

Finally, thanks for all the votes! It was great, I really appreciate this event, it's the highlight of my miniature hobby online every year, whether I compete or not!

Thanks,

Congratulation and kudos to the top 3

And equal congratulations for everyone else who entered this year as it was a pleasure competing against you and seeing your masterpieces in miniature.

Thanks to the team for organising it and giving me the spur to get more of the lead mountain finished than would normally be the case - plus the opportunity to paint a few figures I wouldn't normally go for.

Feeling like I have a nosebleed ending in 13th, a long way from my normal territory and may give hope to others lower down, as last year I was in the bottom 3 and this years standard was equally as high as always.  Already have some nice shiney's that may just havemake an appearance next year,

Thanks everyone  :)
It was indeed a good league and a close fought race at all levels in the league. Honestly, I was very lucky to edge out on top. Really, any of the group of painters at the top end of the table could beat any of the others on the right day - it's just luck of the draw when you meet someone, and whether you are pitching one of your strongest entries against one of theirs that is just marginally off their best. I was very fortunate in this respect on a couple of occasions.

Also very sorry that real life intruded for Admiral Benbow in the second half of the league and he had to revert to using previous entries. I'm pretty certain he would have taken the crown for a second time if he'd been able to keep turning out new entries. But these things happen, alas, and real life has to take precedence.

Thanks also for the thanks on the organisation front. It's actually not too much hard work - just a bit time consuming receiving and loading up all the images, setting up all the polls and so on. Probably 3 hours a week. So not onerous. Thankfully Michael very kindly took on the draw/pairings, collation of results and publishing of league tables, which removed a good chunk of the workload. Thank you Michael.

As everyone else has said - well done to everyone who took part. There are always painters of all different standards in the mix, but the format means everyone has something to fight for, and I do genuinely believe that the league encourages people to raise their game, both in painting miniatures, and in taking great pictures of them. I've seen several regular participants get much better at this game over the years.

Above all, thanks to everyone who voted. It is a little sad that with almost 7000 members, the average vote on each match was only around 350. - which is a bit of a drop-off in interest compared to previous LPLs, where 500+ people were voting on some matches. But I guess that's partly down to the fact that we had to stop sending reminder emails this time round, and also just a bit of a lull in the activity level of many members. But its good to know that many people still get a lot out of viewing and voting on the league, as well as those taking part, so thanks to everyone who has mentioned that  :)

As always, feedback on all aspects of the league is welcome. Can't promise that suggestions will be enacted, but can promise that all thoughts will be taken into consideration  :)

And finally, thanks as ever to Alex, the Prof, for running the LAF for all our enjoyment in the first place  :)

Cheers.

Richard

Another fine season completed. Thanks to all parties involved as listed in this topic.

I've probably said this before, but compared to many other challenges and displays out there, I really like two rare aspects of LPL, namely:

1) the sheer amount of stuff that gets painted when people really set their priorities straight and get to work, and
2) how many different genres and styles are present, covering a large chunk of real history and fiction, sometimes even board games and more.

Of course, the good old eye candy is cool too - maybe not exactly unique, but definitely important and always a pleasure to see.

For me, this year was largely the same old chaos as before but maybe with a different flavour. This time I didn't have any two week trips abroad during the league. Instead, I was travelling for almost a month right before, thereby ruining any chances of building anything resembling a buffer. Consequently, it was basically ten weeks of "paycheck painting". A whole bunch of weekends were also booked in advance, pushing everything to weekday evenings. I apologise for not having much time or energy to chat about the entries. I was probably either painting, shooting or trying to rest. :?

Next year I'll start preparing well in advance. No, wait, that's what I've said every year. lol But seriously, just one extra entry would buy me one proper free weekend. I have to think about this.

However, this was possibly the first season ever when I didn't even try to build/paint any new terrain. Sometimes I've tried and failed, spending loads of time on building stuff yet failing to paint it in time. This brand new "minis first" approach was efficient, but I have a feeling that my old terrain pieces are getting a bit overused. That's also something to consider outside of the league period itself.

I'm rambling. But I have about 63 newly painted minis, and I think many of you have something similar too. Well done. Go out and play. :)

(I was playing board games outdoors last week. At midnight. In daylight. It was great.)
