Title: How Many Projects do you have on the go?
Post by: Plampers on June 21, 2017, 01:34:42 PM
Hi lead Adve

Recently realised I am a true addict when it comes to new shiny toys. It seems I really like most periods of history and rule sets! I think I have a total of about ten started projects around me, only managing to finish one in the last year (6pt Saga force :P).

So a question to you lead adventurers? How Many are you working on? Are you strong willed and do not start one until the previous is finished?

My discipline has been increasing as far as projects go.

What I would consider a major project: A table or two worth of terrain, painted miniatures for 2+ factions/groups/armies, ancillary stuff (tokens, dice, markers, rulebooks, etc.).  All of this must be fully painted/assembled/ready to play.

To this effect I only have maybe four major projects, most of which are at the above point.  The advantage of having a project "done" is that I can add a model or unit here or there as I progress without having to stress out over anything.  I'd much rather have 3-4 quality projects fully complete than a dozen small half-done projects.

I generally dislike playing a game with unpainted miniatures or inappropriate scenery, etc.  So this prevents me from allowing a project to sit unfinished (it either gets attention or gets sold off).  It would pain me to have 8-10 projects...none of which I could genuinely put on the table and play.  As such, when I start a project it gets one really big push to get it nearly playable.

I do actually agree with that. It is bothering me at the moment, so I am making an effort to crack on  lol

I am the same wrt unpainted mini's. I can't stand it, but I hobby at home more than I get to game (small baby boy keeping me in line) so it doesn't impact too much right now. Hopefully Ill clear some of this back log when I get more free time :)

Too many for comfort, but at least not as many as you, which is encouraging in a way!

Most of my projects do not have an end as such, as there is always something more to add, so I am not sure whether any of them can really be regarded as finished.

But in number terms, there are five on the go at the moment, ranging from 1/3000 WW2 naval in the Med to 28mm Back of Beyond, plus two that could be regarded as finished although they have been waiting for a very long time to get on the table.

And right now it is too damned hot to do anything about it!  o_o

Too many... if I had to guess, something like a dozen...  :o  some are using mainly pre-painted figures, so they're really just terrain and game accessories, but still.  I need to start finishing the smaller ones so I don't get more overwhelmed than I already am.  lol

Way too many and none of them anywhere near any sort of completion! :(

Hmm ...

It really depends what you class as a project. I have five "permanently" on the go:

But within those, I have a huge number of mini-projects. For example:

And so on. But the only projects with any urgency are the 15mms (as my son wants a massive multiplayer D&D game for his birthday party) and the 10mms (as we'd like to get playing Mayhem again and try out Warmaster). The others are cumulative affairs - a few dwarf elements might feature as goblin allies in HotT, for example, before there are enough of them to constitute a force in their own right.

pretty much one at a time...that way i can be sure it gets near a state of completion

Indeed. That question that hangs over many a lives of who that frequent these pages. It is summertime and people sit back, relax 'n start thinkin' over a beer or wine about their projects. Or more precisely .... when they will be finished in such a manner that gaming/playing with them will be enjoyable. It is part of the cycle that keeps the second hand sections fiiled to the brim with loads of stuff and in that way creates the oppurtunity to start a new project rather cheaply. Most of these will never be finished and end up sooner than later in ..... well you get my drift. And before you ask ..... i have three (3) projects. One, fantasy is ancient. It started way back in late 1980'sor early nineties. For years it was the only project i had and there's a nice collection of these miniatures and assorted bits 'n bobs to play with. The second i started a couple of years ago when i re-surfaced in this glorious hobby, Vietnam. Fortunately i had the time to dedicate myself to it for a year or so and now there's a small but very nice bunch of miniatures. I'd say a good forty that is enough to do skirmishes between American recon and NVA in jungles of Laos. That jungle is also progressing very nicely. The third, and i still have sometimes ... some doubts about it ..... but i can always blame my friend Markiemark, another fellow LAF'er  lol ............is near future and was started just a year or two ago. This project is supposed to be and stay a quite simple operation; just of a bunch of Scotia Grendel commandoes batteling it out against some 'orrible critters. However, potentially there's the danger of this one stalling all for years to come. Am i fed up or tired with the hobby. No, not at all. Remenber i just started a few years ago anew. It's more a question of havin' been painting for many years and now i want to play  o_o . Nevertheless, all three of my projects are progressing at a satisfactory pace and are in a play-able stage. ;-)

I have 4 major projects which are effectively never ending, as I keep adding to them. They also have appropriate scenery etc:
28mm post apocalypse - the flavour changes year on year, but its still the same genre
28mm Arthurians/migration period
28mm 'late' old west
40mm moderns

Plus I have an almost complete 28mm Malayan Emergency project  (literally just need to finish a handful of figures), a pile of Quar which I really must do something with and a steampunky science fantasy set of viking/cossack musket welding mammoth herders and a few sundry idds and ends inspired by the Mortal Engines books

Well, yes. The great question...

In fact, at the moment I have exactly no properly live projects currently being worked on. I've not unpacked much hobby stuff since we moved house about a month ago, although I have started to repopulate my display cabinets.

Available hobby space is now much diminished from where we were before, and I'm having a prolonged moment of existential doubt about what to do now; not least because the process of moving made it very painfully clear how much hobby-related clutter and junk I had accumulated...and how many non-active projects I have.

If I'd answered this question two months ago, the answer would have been probably about a dozen (28mm Romans, 10mm Romans, 28mm Peninsular war, 28mm WWII (early war and late war), 15mm WWII (desert war), 6mm Austro-Prussian, 28mm Trojan war, and about four distinct fantasy projects; oh yes, and the early 16th century in 28mm...) with more in the background jostling for attention.

So for the time being, while I mull things over, most of my hobby stuff will stay in boxes in the garage. I'm going to allow two exceptions, though: 1) 28mm Dragon Rampant, for the imminent school holidays (my eldest boy is a strong fan and his brother is probably biddable... their small sister, well, we'll see...); but we need some more trolls & goblins; and 2) the early 16th century project, which was just getting to the fun stage when we had to move.

Just to illustrate the sort of instant distraction that always happens, though, last weekend I decided to unearth some 15mm fantasy stuff, just to see what I've got. We'll see where that goes...

Anyway, for the moment I'm rather enjoying not seeing ranks of half-painted figures perched on almost all my bookshelves; but I've not picked up a paintbrush for two months now, and that I do miss. Think I'll see how I get on with a small beginning before making any radical decisions.

The short answer is too many!

Looking around my painting area I currently have the following:
10mm WSS for Black Powder
28mm Pulp 1920s for The Men Who Would Be Kings
28mm Darkest Africa for The Men Who Would Be Kings
28mm 16th Century Poles/Ottomans for Pikeman's Lament
28mm Rennaiassance for En Garde
28mm Orcs and Elves for Middle Earth (assorted rules)
28mm Lost City ruins (which double up for Frostgrave)
28mm generic mud brick village for North Africa/Middle East

However, I do try to concentrate on one project until I have enough figures/terrain to play a game.

Third Century Romans and Goths (have enough to play)
Romano Brits and Saxons (have enough to play)
Wars of the Roses (a bit of a back burner)
Darkest Africa tribes and Arabs (complete but have more)
Back of Beyond Russians and Chinese (complete but have more)
World War II 20mm Germans and Russians (complete but always adding to it)
Great War late war Brits and Germans, early war Germans (complete but adding more)
Spanish Civil War (have enough to play)
First Carlist War (have enough to play)

So a project is never finished you see  ;), started collecting the WWII stuff in 1994 for instance.
I also have Dark Age Irish in stock, ready for when Bill starts releasing his Vikings

A few:

- Jazz Age North West Frontier Romp, large table, Triumph and Tragedy rules
- Chicken Race on the Arumbaya, large Table, pulp setting using rules also rooted in T&T, but tweaked beyond recognition.
- Fallgrave, medium table, GoT themed terrain and figs using Frostgrave rules with new fluff
- Terror Incognita, large table, co-op 1920's polar pulp adventure with the intrepid Mr Bulshot, rules not decided upon
- "Attentatet i Pålsjö skog", alternate WWII scenario on a medium table using Swedish mechanized troops vs. SS Recon and Fallschirmjagers. Rules to be decided upon.
- Troll hunt in the Ettenmoors, small table, rangers vs.trolls and goblins using GW LotR /tH-rules

There are always a bunch of other ideas percolating in my minds but nothing I've committed myself fully to. I add the odd miniature or terrain piece "themes" like the crew of SS Xanthipe, The Duke of Nutherland Kennel Club, Pikeys vs. coppers, The Asylum of Monimasket

By these standards I only have two "projects".  That is 28 mm fantasy and 28 mm sci-fi.

However within those there are many projects on the go:
Chaos army
Undead army
Empire army
Orc and Goblin army
Dwarf army
Scenery
A Castle
4ground houses
A playing surface
Chaos marines (converted old beakies plus chaos renegades)
Imperial Guard (the old plastics plus some RT era metals)
Orks (mostly RT era)
Eldar (all RT originals)
Scenery including Deadzone buildings

So sort of two and sort of about a dozen.

It really does fill me with joy to know I am not alone lol. I think as of today, right here right now I am only going to purchase Hobby supplies, paint , basing material etc etc until I have got a few more to a playable stage. I am also going to focus on certain Rulesets for periods only. Focus is the name of the game!!

As it stands I have the following to work on...

20mm/1:72 Colonial for TMWWBK ( going well, almost a british force done)
20mm Modern
28MM Fantasy (was for AOS but probably be used more with Dragon Rampant) (includes dwarves and chaos force)
28mm WW2 Fallschrimjager
28mm Indian tribe for Song of Muskets and Tomahawks
1/72 Vietnam (I thought why not when I am making Congo Scenery anyway, Jungles Jungle right....)
Some Small scale ships for Galleys and Galleons
10mm FIW for SP2
28mm Imagination Napoleonic for SP2
a Very much stalled Warzone Project - 28mm Sci fi
Some Small planes for Bag the Hun (actually going to offload these to a friend lol )

When on Paper...It doesn't look so bad..Does it?

mmmm

At the moment I have a few on the go and probably need to focus on at least one of them to something, although the LPL helped this

At present have on the go:-
Hordes Trollbloods and Circle forces
Carnevale Vatican and Guild
28mm Italian wars
Batman

And these are just the ones I'm actively trying to work on with a number sitting in boxes waiting to be picked up again sometime in the future

Add to the ones that are niggling at my thoughts for future VBCW and something VSF then list could grow quickly

As a friend once put it a lead butterfly

So projects on the go

Napoleonic:
1) Last two Battalions of the British 4th Division for the Peninsular War specifically Talavera, to go with completed 3rd Division and Cotton's Light Dragoon Brigade.
2) Half of Fane's Heavy Cavalry Brigade for Talavera, when figures arrive.
3) Command figures for above.
4) 16th Portuguese Line Regiment to finish Pack's Independent Brigade for Peninsular War.

AWI:
1) Units for Sharp Practice, both sides.

Medieval:
1) Finish retinue for Lion Rampant.

On the plus side all figures are in the pile or on order.

Only two. I've only ever had two, really.

Since the early 90s I've been (very slowly, with much distraction along the way - hello MtG!) trying to get decent sized armies for all 6 of the 2nd ed. Space Marine (epic scale) factions. Eventual goal is 40,000 pts worth across all 6 factions. So cheesy, but I was young when I came up with it.

A Confrontation/Rogue Trader project of 600 minis, spread across 50 factions. At least, that is what I started it as in 2004, it seems to have turned into the project of getting as many unreleased Citadel miniatures as possible. :D But I have to find a way to fit each new acquisition into the project, and sell the mini it displaces.

So even a very small number of projects over decades = never ever close to completion  lol

I tend to try to do projects in little 'sprints' using a project tech term. So I may have various larger projects on the go but try to finish something within a week or two. That helps me show progress to myself. I use my blog (https://mellis1644.wordpress.com) as a driver for that as it keep the morale up & focuses on what I have finished. These all are part of never larger ending projects (is any project ever really done), but I get the personal satisfaction of finishing something every so often.

Of course I have just started a huge ww2 german army project and have somewhat broken my own rules for that, to ensure they all are based the same but that's a different story.

2x WW2 28mm armies
2x WW2 15mm armies
1 SciFi 6mm army
1 large Pulp 20s/30s project
1 smaller, but getting larger, modern pulp/ spyfi project
about 15x 15mm scifi armies (I really must reign this in its ridiculous)
2 dropzone commander forces
Thinking about a saga force, another 6mm scifi force, maybe 40k and 2x 6 or 10mm fantasy armies.

I think thats it possibly.

Let's see...

Actually Properly Active Projects:
28mm English Civil War/Thirty Year's War - the only project I'm actively buying or painting figures for at the moment or building scenery for. The scenery will cross over to 28mm pulp eventually, as well.

Actively being played but not currently actively painting figures or building scenery for:
28mm interwar pulp - ongoing but basically built out, I have loads of figures and loads of scenery.
Infinity sci-fi (32mm? whatever...) - ongoing, I have loads of unpainted stuff but also loads of painted stuff, so it's become a bit of a slow-burn project. Lots of scenery too.
28mm Russian Civil War - ongoing in the sense that I have unpainted figures around for it, but both Red and White forces are built up to a thoroughly playable point and I have enough scenery that I've no plans for anything new.

Around but not currently actively being played, built, painted, etc:
15mm science fiction - although this might bubble back to active after years in storage as some of the local club are playing various rules.
28mm fantasy - I have small skirmish forces (Songs of Blades & Heroes-sized, so 6-8 figures), a small stockpile of unpainted stuff, and a couple of pieces of fantasy-specific scenery.
28mm Blood Bowl - 90% finished Goblin team, some figures I intend to convert to a Chaos team, figures around somewhere for an Amazon or human team, a couple of finished teams, one finished pitch, and an unfinished second pitch.
6mm science fiction - haven't played or done anything with this stuff in over a decade, not sure it really counts anymore but I still have figures and some scenery!

So, eight projects, only one of which is really actively being painted or built for at the moment, and several of which cross-pollinate to some extent, especially on the scenery side.

I keep thinking about WW1 in 28mm as an expansion of the RCW stuff, or in 6mm or 10mm for that larger scope. So far I am resisting all of these urges!
Title: Re: How Many Projects do you have on the go?
Post by: Antonio J Carrasco on June 23, 2017, 07:06:26 AM
Right now? Let's me see (all in 28mm):

- Successors/Macedonians
- Late Roman Empire
- Dark Ages (only odds and ends, as I have most of what I need, but some archers and at least a unit of horse would be welcome)
- Indian Mutiny, for Sharpe Practice.

Also I have two 15mm Crusaders and Muslim armies that are almost complete. Just need to paint a couple of Muslim light horse units -Seljuk Turks, actually- and a couple of Christian infantry units to finish them. Of course, being a professional procrastinator means that only God knows when I will do it!

I have the attentionspan of a butterly when it comes to hobby projects. And this forum is not helping - at all >:(
In fact i think it is actively making my attentions span worse because of all the cool stuff on here.

I dont know if I have any major projects. I have gotten into a nice rythm where I can take my butterfly attentionspan and flutter from one project to another and actually finish something as I have a lot of stuff one painting session away from being done.

But currently on my desk there are the following:
28mm Baltic Crusades
28mm Mycheneans
28mm Landsknechts
28mm Vikings
28mm Modern
6mm Modern

And a bit of scenery of various sizes for all of it.

At 67 I have decided to start no 'new' projects, given that all my projects in GHQ long ago reached gameable levels. Now I only buy and paint things which take my fancy, very liberating it has been too. Currently I'm working on Burma 1943 Ghurkas, FRW British generals and French camp sets, F&IW Indians and French Canadians, while next month it will be VBCW additions. After that who knows, or even cares? But I recognise the answers above, after all, I've been there too...

All in 28mm I have:-

Greek hoplites – Bought all the figures. Painted about half so enough for a game.
Byzantines – Bought nearly all the figures. Painted over two thirds so also enough for a game
Russian SYW – Bought half the figures but not started anything
WW1 British/US – Bought all the figures. Painted over three quarters.

I also have an AWI British army (painted by a friend) and an AWI American army (which I painted) that I regard as finished so I don’t regard them as ongoing projects.

I have made the mistake in the past of having too much on the go, being a butterfly and also susceptible to the seduction of manufacturers army deals, but multiplying my low painting output by the number of figures I had made me realise some of these projects might see me off even though I am only 50, so I have had to rationalise matters.
At least all but one of the above are in a gameable state so I don’t feel too pressured into painting.

My main issue is lack of gaming opportunities/people to game with which is making me think about giving it all up completely.

Epic (6 forces, about 8 companies for each)
Dropfleet gothic (imperial, chaos, eldar, nids)
Dreadfleet o'war
Bloodbowl (6 teams)
Space hulk 3D (25% done, plus stealers and deathwing to do)
inq 28 (hundreds of minis to go, plus the scenery)
Dungeon project (3d boards plus undead, skaven, dark elves, night goblins)
Oldhammer (dwarves, empire, wood elves, savage orcs + forest gobs)
Rogue Trader skirmish (orks, marines, squats, chaos, cultists)
Dark Angels for 30k
Cultists for 40k
Nurgle plague horde
Imperial guard (acquired the original plastics box)
Truescale deathwatch
Realm of chaos skirmish (4 factions obviously)
Fantasy FIW rules

I'm finding it pretty depressing and hard to find motivation if i'm honest, but i can't see cutting any of it  :'(

I embrace the butterfly side of things! I'd far rather do something vaguely creative in the evenings than slump in front of the TV, and the wealth of superb podcasts makes painting an attractive option once the kids are in bed (especially if my wife has work to do or some urgent Scandi-noir drama to attend to). So I feel no guilt in flitting between projects so long at they provide a bit of relaxation in the evening.

That said, I do try to get a fair bit of overlap between my projects. So, the 10mm wolfriders I've been working on at the moment will be used in 15mm Dragon Rampant, as the orcish riders work perfectly well as small orcs (about 4' or so) in 15mm. I'll use six stand of three riders to make up a unit.

In the same way, my 15/20mm bugbears will see some time as 28mm goblins for SoBH and, possibly, as 10mm giants in Mayhem and Sword & Spear. My 15mm ogres are actually 28mm Chronicle orcs. I'm basing up some 15mm Blood Dawn orcs as 10mm ogres and keeping others individually based for RPGs. But both will work together in Dragon Rampant. And a lot of the bigger monsters work across all scales.

Currently painting:
28mm British Light Dragoons for French Revolution period (mícro-project' -small collection to round out early Napoleonic British force)
28mm British Legion cavalry and foot for AWI ('micro-project' - slowly acquiring a loyalist contingent to use with friends' AWI collections)
28mm Union casualties, Berdan's Sharpshooters, and a 12 pounder and crew for ACW; (project nearly complete)
28mm Indians and rocket troops for War of 1812 Anglo-Canadians (project nearly complete)

In the pile:
1:56 WW2 Italians (tanks and a few infantry, North African project, nearly complete)
1:56 WW2 late war German vehicles (finishing off a Bolt Action army)
28mm Great Northern War Swedes (3 battalions infantry, 2 regiments cavalry, 3 guns - start of new project)
15mm 7YW French hussars and light infantry (will complete the project)

On order:
28mm 7YW Prussian hussars (to paint as Luckner's Hussars - will finish off my Hanoverian project)

Well, I suppose it depends what you define as a 'project', I don't think I actually have anything quite on the scale of some of the chaps here, but since I'm still by most standards only really just starting out give it time  :D.  Projects wise (by my definition of being actively in a 'project box'), I have 6 (well 7 but I am in the process of jettisoning one).

I have:
28mm Anglo-Saxons for Saga (the first figures I ever painted and although all units are long since complete I made some fairly poor choices on basing, which I need to redo at some point).
28mm Early Imperial Romans (3/4 done, although haven't actually touched it since 2015 when I sailed past my original deadline to do it).
28mm French and Indian Wars (my largest and also almost completely unpainted, apart from some Rangers).
28mm Frostgrave (pretty much done apart from a couple of figures).
28mm Bolt Action British (I have collected everything together for it, but stalled out 6 months ago and haven't really got around to restarting).
28mm 16th Century Japan (my Sohei for Ronin/ToH are mostly done, my Samurai/Ashigaru are very much not)
(Getting rid of a 28mm Norman force that I got but then changed my mind on, that will inevitably magically change into a different Saga army at a Bring and Buy though)

I think the problem for me at least is that once I've stopped for whatever reason I find it rather difficult to restart, especially as various of my projects seem to be tricky to paint and so that much harder to get back into :'(

Exactly this.

A project is to get me a nice modular table to play Song of Blades and Heroes in 15-18 mm.
Start a 18 mm dwarf clan and their ennemies, orcs, goblins, drows ...
Keep expanding my 18 mm villagers line. So far a pack of wood elves is ready, half orcs and orcs are on the way.
Will follow dwarves and halflings. And some adventurers...
And last but not least, start my own miniature brand "Khadrin's Miniatures" 18 mm fantasy miniatures suited for good ole RPG,
skirmish games and the like. If the french administration monster allows, you'll hear from it in the coming months !!!

Yes! Consider your status as a "true wargamer" under review!  lol

"Actively being played but not currently actively painting figures or building scenery for:" Wirelizard, that's cheating to be considered in this thread. I could claim over 30 projects in that criteria.  ;)

Current?  Oh, about 30 or so, with 3-4 being worked on in round table fashion at any given time...

VSF Norwegians, Martians, Germans, and Mercenaries
Pirates of many sorts and types
Pulp/WW2/WWW2
Far Future mixed bag
Postapocalyptic (this one never gets old)
Several fantasy armies - dwarf, goblin, orc (they are different for me), Brettonian, Arthurian
Genestealer Cult
Clan War Crane
Slaanesh Daemon Army
Superheroes
and such...

The list is too long but counting only those who I can remember received some love(or paint) during the last two years:

28mm
Danish invasion of Sweden 1520
Sack of Rome 1527
Siege of Malta 1565
Snapphane guerilla war 1670s
GNW Finland 1710
SYW Battle of Gustow 1758
Massacre of the Swiss Guards 1792
Retreat from Åland 1809
Last stand at Gandamak 1842
Storming Chapultec 1847
Siege of Rome 1849
Draft riots New York 1863
Dybböl 1864
FFL vs Black Flag 1885
Japanese invasion of Taiwan 1895
Congo 1961

40mm
Mexican American War 1847
WW2

We (or at least me) are so easily distracted...

Ok I'll jump into this post. I'm not counting collections that I have enough figures to play a game only the ones that I'm currently working on and don't have enough figures to play the current favorite rule set.

25mm Colonials for TMWWBK.
28mm First Nations for Flint & Feather.
28mm Vikings for 6 point Saga.
28mm LOTR for Dragon Rampant.
28mm Swedes and Russians for 18th Century A Gentlemans War
28mm Germans for CoC.

I'm stopping there digging deeper will only get me into trouble. One of my objectives for this year was to finish of several projects to the being able to play point. Changing rule systems doesn't help and sometimes getting a scenario book can cause more purchases to be made.

Seems we all have lots to be getting on with !

This is actually inspiring me to crack on and get some stuff done, which can only be a good thing. Only other problem is this thread has also caused me to look at other shiny things mentioned that people are working on. 10mm Fantasy caught my attention! Also Fusilerdan- Not heard of Flint & feather?! Uh o!

I only have one project at a time; that way it gets finished.
Currently Darkest Africa for Congo; first two columns complete, two more to go.
Before that I finished off all my ancients stuff.

I guess the natural follow up question to the original question. Would be.

When is a project finished?

I tend to never stop some projects. Because once you reach a decent army size you want to play with bigger armys and even bigger ones. And then HUGE ones!

My Viking project started life as a SAGA warband. That turned into a Lions Rampant army and now I aim to play Hail Ceasar with my Viking army.

A project is finished when you've been using the figures to fight battles for several years and haven't felt the need to paint any more.
That's the category most of my stuff is in. My only problem is that I have so many finished projects that often a given period won't see action for years.

I have four projects I'm working on - one for each season.

Spring: Bushido; Eastern Fantasy
Summer: Dead Man's Hand; Old West
Fall: Strange Aeons; Cthuloid Pulp
Winter: Frostgrave; D&D Fantasy

The Miniatures for those games also double as nicer replacements for various board and roleplaying games.

Spring: Rise of the Kage & Legend of the Five Rings
Summer: Shadows over Brimstone & Deadlands
Fall: Mansions of Madness & Call of Cthulhu
Winter: Heroquest, Dungeon Saga & D&D

All miniatures are based on clear acrylic bases for cross pollination purposes. For the same reason I'm sticking to 28-32mm.
