Title: Crom's Anvil - 15mm desert fantasy
Post by: angel barracks on June 28, 2017, 10:02:46 PM
LTNS.

I have not posted much here as 6mm sci-fi skirmish is not especially popular here, which is fair enough!
However, I have started a 15mm fantasy range.

Currently it is just buildings and terrain, but I have a few greens at the casters so I will be bringing out some 15mm fantasy skirmish characters soon.

Check out the new venture here:

http://cromsanvil.co.uk/ (http://cromsanvil.co.uk/)

Here are a few of the locations my games are set in:

And you can read some of my game reports by clicking the Chronicles link on the site!

Mitra be praised!

Those look terrific! I'm increasingly convinced that 15mm is the scale for RPGs, so it's great to see more suitable miniatures.

Oh they're top - REALLY like the one on the right, plus I can see an alternative use for the far left (Hello Astropath!). Can't wait!

Very nice terrain. Some entertaining game reports, well presented as introductions to the rules (which I am now tempted with).

Got a bit of an idea for this one to make it even more epic. Top stuff, everyone should order one - would work well for sci-fi too.

Thanks, with so few actual rules a lot is left up to the player.
I was also debating just doing a normal move but only counting rolls of 1-3.
That way the sneak is automatic but slow...

That would work too, but I like the opposed roll as it forces the players to make a decision on how many dice to allocate to special and how many to movement.   If you did the 1-3s only how would you allow for a failure of the sneak?  More 6s than 1s maybe? or would you just assume there was no failure?

Against mere minions I would assume no failure, sometimes it is about the story.
But the more 6's than 1's would work well I reckon.

I will almost certainly use the method I did though, as it works better when faced with proper bad buys with 10 dice or whatever.

I can promise plenty of things to support the desert flavour.
There are figures at the casters that have a distinct desert feel.
Plus more buildings to come.

Do eeeeeeet!

Yeah, guessing at the weight it would most likely cost £9.00 to post airmail or £7.00 surface mail.
Which is a fair bit when the building is only £15.00 to pre-order.

International seems to work best on bigger orders.

Unless you are buying from the UK, in which case we get hit with loads of extra charges..  :(

Cool stuff.

Out of interest AB, how comes you went with 15mm for a skirmish game?
Title: Re: Crom's Anvil - 15mm desert fantasy
Post by: angel barracks on July 05, 2018, 02:32:39 PM
hmmmmm....

So after about 10 years of 6mm as a job, the desire to play 6mm had long gone.
It is often said that if you do your hobby as your job for long enough, it is no longer a hobby.

I had not played any 6mm games in ages nor had any desire to.

So I thought I would try something different to play and keep AB as the day job (along with The Wargames Website).

So I had a look around for what to do.
It needed to be figure lite so that suggested skirmish and not really sci-fi as that is the day job.
So why not fantasy?

I had a look around and saw the Copplestone barbarians and that was that!
:D

I started making some desert buildings and figured I may as well mould them and offer them for sale.
So I did, then I made a few more and moulded them, and then some more, and then some figures, and now some more figures.

I then outgrew the rules I was using (they were great, but not meaty enough for my needs and I had also made a lot of house rules and changes to various mechanics that rather than keep changing them until they were what I wanted, I started my own set)

:D

Thanks for your reply AB :D

Ooo I don't think I have seen those before (goes off to have a butchers)...nice. I have been entertaining the idea of a 15mm Heroquest but I've been having difficulty finding decent 15mm sculpts. Hmm maybe a combo of yours and his... I'm still not completely convinced about 15mm minis as have never owned or painted one.

Sounds like a pretty mad journey, I'm looking forward to seeing more of your work.

I put off painting the Copplestone 15mm figures for several years, but actually they are just like small 28s and very easy and enjoyable to paint. They’re rather more like 18mm than true 15s.

I’m guessing Angel Barracks’ figures will be much the same given that he’s made them to fit.

I guess I was wondering if 15mm minis seem a bit lost in a skirmish game though I suppose it means you can build a small town on a board without taking up loads of room.

Apart from that no concerns really, just generally in a gaming funk at the mo and thinking about other possible scales and whatnot. I have collected 28-32mm mostly, though have recently dabbled in 40mm. A few years ago I sculpted some 54mm minis and would love to do more sculpting for another project I am slowly working on and have been entertaining thoughts of other scales. Just playing around with lots of ideas and hoping inspiration strikes.

Random thoughts:

A great many people think 6mm is lacking in detail.
I went out of my way to release some very detailed and dare I say it cool 6mm models.
I wonder if the notion that 6mm has no detail is due to the vast majority of it being ranks and ranks of 6mm models painted to a rough standard?
I see plenty of 6mm that is sprayed black then colour just dabbed/brushed onto the raised areas and then inkwashed.
For me this hides the quality of the sculpting and can put people off.

I am also wondering if this applies to 15mm?

If you have the notion there are some cool 15mm fantasy topics I can point you in the direction of that may inspire?

Inspire away I'd love to see them.

I have been looking and spotted some nice 15mm paint jobs so your probably right that just with any mini a poor paint job lets them down. I was looking at some Orcs on RPE that look quite good.

Out of interest what size bases do you use on your minis?

I assume you still use an armature when sculpting 15mm, any WIP pics or greens you wouldn't mind sharing.

Do you think you'd cover any temple-dungeon adventures in your game?

Plus...I have ideas... :D

I've been following your work on this with some interest for a few months now. Perhaps I'm mistaken, but based on your promotion text and what I was able to discern from Wargame Vault, you're asking $10 for what appears to be  a 32-page PDF of homebrew combat mechanics more than a fully developed game. Am I mischaracterizing the situation here? Obviously I'm speaking without having plunked down my money for this yet, but this is what it looks like from what I can discern from this vantage point. There are a lot of skirmish games with light RPG elements out there in the market...

Hi,

Thanks for the question.

It is fully playable as it is.
There is no need to have to come up with anything extra in order to play.

I think the point I was trying to get across is that the rules are easy enough to modify if you want to.
Some games have so many charts and tables and intricate mechanics that in order to add a new feature it could be a lot of hard work.
The Burning Sands mechanics are versatile and flexible enough that you can (I feel) add new aspects without too much effort.
And on the flip side, ignore some.

I suspect most gamers that are not playing in an especially competitive environment will add house rules, extra bits and tweak the rules they have bought.
I know I certainly make house rules for games I have bought.
Some games however have proved harder to add extra features by the rigidness of the mechanics.
Burning Sands is not like that, it is easy to tweak and guidelines on doing so are included.

Abilities for example would be things like:

Fast: +2 to all movement related Prowess tasks.
Strong Willed: +2 to all Wits tasks against Ensorcellment.
Reckless Fighter: +3 to all Hand to Hand combat rolls when attacking, but may not defend against attacks.
Eagle Eyed: +2 to Wits tasks based around perception.

These are taken from the rules, but along with the ones listed are guidelines on creating more without 'breaking' the system or getting too unbalanced.

That was kind of what I was trying to get across.

That make sense, or am I rambling?

This is meant as friendly feedback, but your competitors seem to offer a lot more at this price point. "Pulp Alley" is a full-fledged game in a professionally produced 48-page PDF at the same price point as your release ($10). "Advanced Song of Blades and Heroes," an 88-page professionally produced PDF, is available at the same price. Even a home-brew like "Crom" comes in cheaper at around $6 and 64 pages. And though not professionally typeset or edited, a game like "Five Leagues from the Borderland" has an immense amount of game crammed into 76 pages.

Anyway...just some feedback from the marketplace. I would be more inclined to take a chance on your offering at about half the price.

To be fair when pricing it I thought that as long as I get £5.00 in my pocket from each sale, it will have been worth the hundreds of hours of work and may encourage me to go and write more later on.
Alas that £5.00 in my pocket for each sale would mean charging more than I already am...

Another Way To Buy Burning Sands

Up until now, Burning Sands was only available via Wargame Vault.

I have now made it available via Crom's Anvil.
If you buy via Wargame Vault then you can have access to the PDFs immediately via a download link.
If you buy via Crom's Anvil the process is a bit slower as I have to e-mail you a link manually, BUT it is cheaper directly through me.

The time it takes for me to send the e-mail with the link will vary, it could be a few minutes only if I am near my laptop, or it could be the next day if I happen to be asleep when you order!

Yup, it is getting close to being done.
Though the family have just acquired a kitten which it seems I am the primary looker afterer of.
So there could be a slight delay over the planned release date...

Well he is from the north and S&S is set in the UK, so maybe.
oooh I wonder what his mega evolution is?!

First there's Basakonan (from "Berserker Conan" or Conan the Barbarian") and then Daitekonan (from "Great King Conan). More mashups and portmanteaux than actual translations using the Japanese edition titles.

This part of the site will detail the background of the world of Burning Sands and its official lore.

If you have any questions about the world of Burning Sands, please do ask and I will endeavour to answer you by adding some information to the relevant page.

I have tons of stuff for that game (mostly Copplestone barbarians and the excellent terrain from the Crom‘s Anvil site), but never found time to get into playing (new job, moving flats, baby etc.). Will see if my little one will sleep long enough for me to read the rules today.
