Title: Reaper Bones Gug painted up
Post by: Hobby Services on August 27, 2017, 08:58:41 PM
Continuing the Mythos painting spree, here's the Gug from Reaper:

Stands about 2" tall, which is still seems small compared to Lovecraft's description.  The mouth's wrong too, vertical is fine but the things do have an actual head not just a maw in the torso.  Arguably not furry enough either.  The Gug's one of the few Mythos critters with much of a detailed description, so this feels like a wasted opportunity to meet his vision.  The old Grenadier version was closer to Lovecraft.

The thing's far enough off that I ignored the text myself and just painted it to taste.

OTOH, it's a nicely executed design and makes a dandy alien or dungeon critter.

That GUG showed up today at my place.   He looks even better 'in the acrylic' than in the photograph.  Nice work, and a good addition to my collection.

Thanks!  Need to finish up the Dark Young from the set, it's sitting here waiting for a little more paint.

I love your painting, but HATE that sculpt.   :'( :?

Yeah, it's pretty much crap when it comes to matching the description in the book.  It's like the sculptor didn't even read the source material.  RAFM's much older sculpt is closer, although still out of scale and nowhere near as bulky as I'd imagined it - but it's also more than three times as expensive.

Its mouth reminds me of something, but I just can't put my finger in on what it is...

I'm sure he'll be fine as long as he uses appropriate protection.  Never ran into one with teeth, though.

Then you have never been to Grimsby.
