Going to put a platoon sized force together for an Ardennes game this Christmas, this is the first squad. The separate heads were a bit of a pain but I understand why people like them (more variation).
The set itself comes with half the squad in greatcoats and half in the M43 uniform, and the next time I paint them I think I'll paint some in the chocolate brown trousers.
-
Excellent brushwork there Jeff :-*
-
Lovely clean paintjobs on these. You'll have to do mine! :D
-
Wonderful brushwork on these. Excellent.
-
They look great Jeff, like the basing too,I'll have to post my Winter Germans up too,no wait, yours look too good lol!
-
They look great.
One of these winters I will have to paint up guys I have had for years.
Just waiting for it to get really cold. :D
-
Brilliant painting, they look really good!
-
Very nice!
-
Thank you all for taking the time to comment, I'll update they thread as I get the squads done.
-
Lovely brushwork on these US infantrymen. The greatcoat colour is good.
Cheers,
Helen

Another 10 added, this time from Artizan Miniatures along with some close up shots.
-
Neat work Jeff. 8)
-
More nice work on those Jeff :)
-
These look great. Artizan figures have a great style, not to everyone's liking I know
-
Nice work on those they look suitable cool
The white bases are very effective
What rules do you use for WWII?
-
Thanks chaps

We have been playing a lot of Bolt Action lately and me and Romark decided to do a winter game for this Xmas. I have however recently played Chain of Command and really enjoyed it and I will definitley be playing it again.
-
Very nice.

Lovely work...squad composition...basing and the paint job....all simply top-notch!
Personally I am a huge fan of the Artizan miniatures ....and not just their WW2!
-
Nice work, Jeff. Will you do some vehicles next?
-
Very nice.
Thank you

Thank you and nice to meet another Artizan fan
Nice work, Jeff. Will you do some vehicles next?
Thanks Dirk, it's an infantry game but I have toyed with the idea of adding possibly one tank.
I bought a ready painted Sherman from Warlord Games (won't be doing that again in a hurry :?)
Painting vehicles as opposed to figures is a whole different ball game and a skill I will have to try to learn, but after this reinforced platoon is finished I've promised myself some terrain making :)
-
Nice work on those. I'm another fan of Artizan and you've really done them justice.
-
Very nicely done. Will look forward to seeing it progress and Romarks Germans ;D
-

I love to paint the Artizan-Stuff. It works well. Hope he will do some more WW2 or MarcOrDie, but in the moment it doesn't seems so.
-
My platoon of SS Panzergrenadiers is formed around a core provided by the Warlord Games boxed set (Panzergrenadiers not the new Waffen SS-specific set) but the command (platoon and two squads) and most of the support options for Chain of Command are Artizan.
Strong and durable figures, full of character without being cartoony in any way. My basic (no support options as yet) Russian Rifle platoon is entirely Artizan .....not that i'm a fanboy you understand ;D
-
Well another 10 Warlord figures done, this gives me a total of 30 figures so far. The core of my force will be three 12 man squads and two 3 man command squads, so I have another 12 figures to do before I get to that strength.
-
Nice work mate, solid paint jobs.
-
Nice work on those mins Jeff :)
-
Very nice figures :-* :-* :-* :-* :-* :-*
Looking forward to seeing what you are going to build for your table.
-
Thanks for taking the time to comment chaps, the pack of 10 veterans and 2 Officers lined up to complete the core force :)
-
I feel a bit frosty, when I see them. Great Jeff, but I think Africa would be warmer ;)
-

Cheers Dirk, I think you're probably right :)
-
They look really great, you're already frozen just when one look at them :D
-
Another 10 figures done for my reinforced US platoon, though these will be just average GI's in my army. That's 40 figures in total and now it's time to paint the command groups.
-
Your painting style for these really is very much my taste, lovely work mate.
-
Love em, fantastic work 8) 8) 8)
-
Nice work on those minis Jeff, very seasonal :)
-
Great work as always! :-*
What have you planned for the motor pool side of things?
-
Smashing minis Jeff, really neat and excellent bases
-
Lovely Jeff. Boxing Day was not wasted then? :D ;)
-
Thanks for the comments chaps, much appreciated.
Great work as always! :-*

Well I bought a ready painted Sherman from Warlord Games but I'm not that keen on it, so I'm going to have to winterise (is that even a word) it. Thing is I don't have that much experience in painting tanks so I'll have to have a good look on the web to get a good tutorial. I don't own an airbrush so it will have to be a tutorial using brushes.
Next up however are 5 figures that were sent to me by an excellent Laffer all the way from Finland ;)
Lovely Jeff. Boxing Day was not wasted then? :D ;)
Thanks Richard, there's only so much Xmas TV I can take I'm afraid. I was looking forward to watching Dunkirk on DVD as I didn't get to see it in the cinema, but unfortunately it didn't work for me not my cup of tea at all :(
-
Oooh, those are beautiful.
-
I'll have Dunkirk if you don't want it, I'm sure we could work out a suitable exchange rate
-
:-* Excellent Jeff, Frostgrave WW2 ;)
I watched Dunkirk on telly, the proper one not the crap new one, and fancy doing some Artizan WW2 now. :D
-

Thank you

You don't think I bought it myself do you, that's what family are for lol :D

Yes I watched the John Mills version as well and hammy acting aside I prefer it.
-
Great work again, really beautiful painted ones again!
-
Very nicely turned out figures.
-
Well done :-*
-
Thanks guys :)
-
I needed two Artizan riflemen to enable me to take the squad up to 12 figures, I put some feelers out on the wanted section of this forum and within days these five figures plopped on to my doormat. They had come all the way from Finland courtesy of fellow Laffer and all round generous good guy Pocoloco, thanks matey :)
There were two guys in parkas and an NCO that I decided would work as some platoon command, the parka guys are from the Devils Brigade range of figures from Artizan but I think they look OK as a couple of junior Officers.
-
They really do look cold. Lovely painting set off by excellent bases. 8)
-
Nice work on those GI's Jeff :)
-
Cheers guys, some support weapons next :)
-
Cracking stuff. 8) 8) 8) 8)
-
Excellent work Jeff, any light vehicles in the offing?
-
Very nice work :-* :-* :-*
-
Love this thread. I must say I much prefer these US figures to the new Empress ones, they look like they would paint up very cleanly even for me.
-
Thanks for the comments chaps, much appreciated :)

They will come eventually Stuart, I've got to learn how to paint vehicles first without an airbrush. Any pointers to good tutorials would be appreciated.

Glad you like the thread vodkafan, I've used Warlord Games and Artizan miniatures for this platoon simply because I wanted some variety. I have some of the new Empress figures which I really like but I haven't included them here as I was thinking of doing another platoon at a later date on Spring/summer bases for the push into Germany :)
-
Loving these recent additions! As an inveterate mix and matcher when it comes to assembling forces like this I have Warlord Games alongside Artizan, Blacktree, Westwind, Stoessi's Heroes and now Offensive Miniatures....they all work and add something to the whole?
This thread is awesome ...but I really don't need to feel any colder right now lol
-
Awesome work once again Jeff! :o Love them! :-*
I should have sent you more :)
If you are not going to use airbrush on vehicles, may I suggest that you do most of the groundwork for vehicle painting with spray cans, some manufacturers offer US Olive drab etc colours in cans and whitewashing tutorials (if you choose to whitewash some of the vehicles) are plenty abound e.g. in the Youtube.
Keep up the great work!

I'm a fan of using figures from various ranges, I find the painting and basing tie them all in :)

Thanks for the figures and the advice on painting vehicles pocoloco 👍 The vehicle I bought is ready painted an olive green colour so I'm thinking of going in with a straight white wash, we'll see how it turns out :)
-
Amazing what amazing painting and superb basing can do to tie a mixture of different ranges together ;)?
-
Well with the command teams and rifle sections done it's time to get some support.
If I play Chain of Command or Bolt Action the enemy get to choose some really good tanks, with that in mind first up are a couple of bazookas to boost my anti-tank capability.
I've still got to get close enough to use them mind :)
-
Lovely Jeff :-*
-
Nice additions to your force
-
Thanks both:)
-
Superb.
-
Great additions to your force ....loving the expression on the kneeling loaders face, he is clearly not living the dream is he? lol lol lol
-

He's just remembered there's a bit of a back blast on a bazooka lol
-
lol lol lol
My regular opponent has a US Armoured Infantry platoon and even though they seem to be able to produce Bazooka teams at will....he still makes extensive use of the 57mm Anti-tank gun I bought him in payment for some painting he did for me!
-
Lovely pjs again Jeff 8) :-*
-
Ok so I've added a medium machine gun to the support list and a Sherman tank. Now I don't have much experience painting vehicles and I don't own an airbrush. This tank is meant to be green that's been whitewashed with the green starting to show through with wear and tear.
I'm happy with it but any constructive comments are gratefully received :)
-
Nice additions to your collection Jeff, tank looks ok to me :)
-
I'm no expert on the painting of tanks but I do know what I like ...and that Sherman I like!
MMG team is pretty awesome too! Being on the receiving end of .30 cal fire isn't fun even when my Panzergrenadiers bring a bucketful of MG42's to the party!
-
Tank looks spot on :-* :-* :-* :-* :-* :-*
For a beginner like you I suppose ;)
-
Nice painting.
The tank looks freshly whitewashed, nice effect.
-
Well done on both the figures and the tank!

Thanks for taking the time to comment chaps, next up some plastic riflemen in greatcoats converted from Warlords winter Russians.
-
Love your stuff mate. The new figures and tank look great.
-
Superb work.

Love your painting style!

Thank you for posting this excellent series of photos! Looking forward to your converted miniatures! Quite intrigued how they turn out......
-
Here's the first five of about 18 figures of US troops to bolster my platoon. They use the Russian legs and torsos from the Winter infantry set, and heads arms and equipment from the US infantry and Paratrooper boxed sets. Not perfect but they'll do for me :)
-
Not perfect :o? If you hadn't said anything I probably wouldn't have known they were converted at all? The mix of Russian and US kits works surprisingly well!
-
I really like them, cracking :-* :-* :-*
-
Excellent stuff Jeff. Mixing the Americans with the Russians has worked out really well. 8) :-*
-
Wonderful new items for your force Jeff!
Great idea to use the mix winter Russians torsos and US bits, they look great!
Tank looks good, like said above, seems to be just freshly whitewashed. One minor detail if you plan placing decals, then paint green uneven circles as a base for the decals. One can see from period photos what I mean.
If you are going for the second platoon, I still have plenty to sell ;) And with a proper discount of course :D
-
Nice work on those minis Jeff :)
-
Fantastic!
-
Thanks for taking the time to comment chaps, Pocoloco I have no plans to put decals on the tank but I know what you mean about the green circles :)
As far as getting a second platoon, maybe after I have done a dug in version of this platoon I'll be in touch :)
-
Some more plastic Russians converted to US GI's, I know equipment wise they are not spot on but they certainly bolstered my platoon with riflemen and give me some different poses to the metal chaps :)
-
Great painting on those; I’m sure after the war the unit will be found out by McCarthy and banned from Hollywood forever lol
-
Thanks for taking the time to comment Grant 👍
-
Superb stuff! What next? 60mm Mortar? .50 Cal?
-

Cheers LS, no I have a couple more of these plastics to do and then I want to do some dug in troops. Though the troops you mention have been purchased and languish in the lead pile :)

Excellent! Can't wait to see how you're going to portray foxholes on the table!
-
Thanks for the comments guys 👍
-
I like the new figures.
So, may I ask how many US guys you have now?
Would love to see a group photo.

That is awesome! Seeing them all together like that really just shows what a fantastic job you've done!
-
Only just caught this and.....bloody hell!
:o :o
That is a seriously impressive and tidy looking force you have built up there.
Bleedin' gorgeous brushwork, topped off with some lovely basing and a tank for the cherry on top.
Superb!

Thanks for commenting guys it does help me to stay focused and spur me on to the next part of the project :)

Great group shot. It’s great how the small batches suddenly coalesce into an army. Have you decided how you’ll deal with terrain?

I've been painting the US forces and Keith (Romark) has been painting the German troops. At the moment we've had practice games on a "Deepcut" snow cloth but I've recently purchased the book pictured from Pat Smith which is an excellent read with lots of hints and tips.
Pat uses Calico material smeared with builders caulk which from the photos on his blog gives a very good effect and has excellent storage potential.
Here's Pats blog in case you were not aware of it :)

They look super.
Now on to battle.
I have the same winter book by Pat that you do.
Great book on how to do winter terrain.

Haha yes ....winterizing terrain is a nerve-wracking proposition! I have two or three buildings awaiting the process....it's been a long wait so far!
-
Some support options for my US Ardennes forces, 2 Sherman's and an M8 armoured car.
Never done whitewash with a snow covering before but I'm happy with them.
They look a bit messy but looking at photos of vehicles in this situation and they all look quite messy in real life.
-
Some 'in action' shots
-
Very nice work :-* :-* :-* :-* :-* :-*
-
Dunno about messy, mate...they look the nuts to me!
:-* :-*
-
Nice work on those Jeff, whatever happend to "minty"?
Did she get a new paintjob?
-
Thanks for the comments chaps, very much appreciated :)

Certainly did mate, hes one of the Shermans above. I wanted a uniform look for the vehicles so he had to have a new paint job :)

Aha!
They look great 👍
-
Painted a 60mm mortar and crew along with a medic for my US platoon.
They're having their first outing this week so more choices for the US commander is a good thing.
-
Nicely painted!
-
Lovely work.
-
Very nice :-* :-* :-* :-* :-* :-*

The bleached grass tuffs are a nice touch.

Lovely crisp paintwork!

The converted figures look good. I did some myself. I wonder, though, did you use parts from the earlier US set or the later one?
When I converted my figures, I used the former, but, I wonder, ever since, if it would have work with the later set which have weapons attached to the arms, not separated…
Either way, they look great! :-* 8) :-*
-
Pretty cool looking! No pun intended...
-
Cheers guys :)

I used a sprue from the second set which I got as a freebie from one of the magazines (I think, it's been a while :))
