Post by: Alan maguire on September 15, 2017, 12:56:14 PM
This is a topic created to show my sculpts

There will be sculpts of all genres.

There will be finished sculpts and W.I.P'S, so please do pop back to check for updates  :)

This Creature is sculpted in Greenstuff .

The whole figure is Greenstuff apart from one of his tenticals which is sculpted in greenstuff/fimo mix

It's tenticals are seperate from creature, as seen in photo's

This fellow has one beedy eye and a sharp wiggly tounge  :D , oh and some bone crushing teeth to boot...

It is sculpted in Greenstuff and fimo. 90% Greenstuff and 10% fimo

This rather nasty looking chap is sculpted in Green stuff and milliput.

It has big teeth, spiky back , pincers for hands and a nasty sting in his tail.

Possibly be used for Horror genre as something lurking in the dark or for a apocalyptic  mutated human .

There's still a little work I'd like to do on him.

Cheers

Alan

A cute little guy with bad intentions  :)

Sculpted in Green stuff with steel ball bearings for eye's...

Post by: Alan maguire on September 16, 2017, 11:19:34 AM
It's got lots of teeth and a big mouth and likes to crunch bones  :D

Sculpted in Green stuff.

There was mixed comments on if this chap should have arms or not, so it seems the best way forward is to have separate arms, skinny long arms were mentioned so i may sculpt a couple of different arm options.

I have also added toes.

So i have added photo's without arms and ( W.I.P ) arms .

Some nasty critters in here. Love the teeth and the stingers especially . Great work! Any tips on achieving a decent skin texture with green stuff? And you mentioned a few of these are fimo / green stuff - do you have to bake the fimo before applying the GS? Or does GS not mind getting baked?
Keep it up!

Great monsters. I like the last one both with and without arms.

Scarper

I use an array of bits i've collected / salvaged / found over the years e.g various brushes, soft and hard, and anything i have found or come across that has a pattern on it. Even Bits of old plastic, metal  o_o . For other detailing i have open an old mobile phone nd stripped it of anything that will creat a design / impression. I have even picked up bits n bobs from the street, my girlfriend thinks im mad  :D Key is to try anything and everything and experiment . use a teeny weeny weeny bit of vasiline before you press it on and dont forget green stuff has amemeroy so press it in a bit more than you think you need to. Trial and error...

With regards to baking the sculpt that has fimo in it i have not done this as the tiny amount i used was so thinly spread it didn't have any affect as far as i could see. It does make the green stuff easier to use, it loosens it up. I have also read on forums in the past that there seems no need to bake it, however since you mentioned it im going to try it out and see what happen and will keep you updated.

Hope this helps and thanks for your comments Scarper.

I like it, though I really need one about six times that size so it's large enough to reasonably menace an entire band of knights and eat a monk in one head-bouncing bite!

Here is a Group photo of the Sculpts i have uploaded so far to this thread.

It's to give you an idea of proportion and height.

The metal ruler i used in the photo measures 6 inches in height and aprox half inch wide.

The sculpt with the big mouth and lots of teeth on the far left is a little over 30mm.

I'm working on more sculpts will upload A.S.A.P

Thank you

Hi Mason

Yeah i use alot of different mediums.

I find polymer clay relatively ok to use now, but i had to play around with various types before finding somthing that worked for me.

The baking is a bit of a pain but then the putty does not go off like green stuff so you have more time to work with it.

It has it's Pro's and con's like all sculpting mediums  o_o

Thanks

Wow!  These are remarkable!

A few ideas, while you're in the R&D stage.

* One thing that kinda bothers me is when an otherwise wonderful mini appears too flat.  Some of Copplestone's and Pulp Figures' minis can be like this.  I know it makes it easier to cast but it makes them appear a little too two-dimensional.

To get around this, could I suggest making them in such a way that you can bend the limbs at the joints into a more 3-D posture.

For example, Breath of Inana was a little flat but she was malleable enough that I could rotate her arm so the blade pointed forward and I could bend her elbows.  Viola!  A more 3-dimensional pose on a beautiful figure (no pun intended)

https://www.lucideyepublications.com/product-page/breath-of-inana

* For those tentacles and tails, if they are not connected to the body and they are long and thin enough, they can also be bent forward and backwards and make a more 3-dimensional mini.  Those tails can be bent a little to fit on different sized bases.

* Swapable heads are also always good.  We can rotate them, change the pitch, put on other heads or use yours on other minis if desired.

Hopefully, these ideas can help improve the balance between dynamic postures and ease of casting, not that yours are lacking ANYTHING, mind you.

Just my wishes when I see someone at that early sculpting stage.

I LOVE that BIG mutated guy with the big gun as well as the Three Wise Men.   ;)

Thanks ErikB,

what is R&D stage ?

yes i agree sometimes a multi part is the best option, if not all the time to enhance the end result of the miniature.

If the miniature is cast in metal then yes it can be bent to create different poses in the miniature but not if it.s resin, unless you slightly heat it up, "at your own risk" ...

Thank you for the info...

Title: Re: Monsters Creatures sculpts Greens
Post by: ErikB on May 17, 2019, 05:52:08 PM
Sure thing, buddy.

R&D stage... research and development.

So, you're going through a process to create a product, right?

I figure you go through several steps, something like this:

Concept (the idea) --> Research (draw pictures, figure out themes, details, equipment, blisters, tentacles, etc.) --> Development (modify your design so it is castable, economic, decide if you want to do multi-part, separate heads, optional equipment, bendable limbs for posing, decide the material) --> Manufacturing (figure out how to actually make it all work, make those moulds, figure out the right metal/plastic/resin, release agent, stuff like that)

Any step could send you back to another one where you find that your idea is not practical and you need to do a re-think.

For example, you have a cool dynamic position in mind but you find that you cannot cast it.  What to do...?

Go back to the Research or Development stage and make those limbs thinner so they can bend at the joints (if you're using metal), make those joints narrow (short sleeves or long sleeves rolled up so the bicep is thick and strong and the elbow bends naturally), or maybe cast in several pieces.

If your artistic style is heavy and heroic, like Copplestone or Pulp Figures (two of my all-time favorites) then this may not be an option, you'll have to come up with another approach.

I'm a software engineer who has worked in design, development, and testing, so I've been through the process in big, expensive projects.  I'm used to having to plan ahead in order to avoid "aw, man, if only we had thought of xxx!!!!!!" later on.

I hope this makes sense.  I hope this helps.

I love your mini designs and can't wait to see them come to fruition.

Oh OK, i know what that is just didn't know what it was you were referring too when you used the initials R&D ...

I do appreciate your interest very much . thank you...

Yes i have lots i want to sculpt and will get around to them as time goes by :)

My pleasure.

One of my personal dreams is to make a line of minis, something creative and completely my own idea, from concept to production, and, ideally, have people love it, of course.

I just want to come up with something nobody else has and have it embraced.

That's why I'm so interested in this.

I can paint but I am not much of an artist, otherwise, so it may be a long time before I come up with anything....

It's exciting watching others turn their creativity into solid "fruits" I can hold in my hand.  I love that.

OK here a few questions for you :

What genre do you like?

What scale do you like?

What proportions do you like?

Do you like slim proportions? cartoon proportions?

Do you like stylized proportions?

Do you like chunky?

Do you like humans?

Do you like creatures / monsters etc ?

A few things to think about...

The kick starter consist of 6 miniatures and will be soon up and running.

A set of Hob goblins...

They are 20mm to the top of their heads...

For 28mm gaming...

I will keep you updated as it happens...

I would very much appreciate if you could share this about.

Thank you very much Guys!

I like chunky/heroic, skeletons for fantasy (I love Mierce Jutes), sci-fi crews like on Firefly or Riddick, and cartoony whimsical like what Josh makes with Zombiesmith (Quar, Shieldbash, Hook, Jaloof, etc.), all in 28mm to 32mm (1/48 scale).

I was thinking of a Galactic Marshals project, intergalactic cop-bounty-hunters.  They'd have all sorts of sci-fi gadgets available, fit in with most other themes, work as special mission groups in other games and themes, and so on.

Well, if we are able to give some feedback, why not!
I like post apoc/sci-fi. I would say I only dabble in fantasy stuff. In my mind the post apoc/sci-fi mixes well in something like a Fallout style universe and has plenty of use across many games.
I am quickly becoming a believer in 15mm. I game in 28/32mm but I'm moving away from that.
I like heroic proportions. I think that is a pragmatic view, as true to form proportions tend to be frail and a real muther#$&! to paint. As much as I refuse to get into WH40k, the old school figures had the right balance. Not so sure about the new stuff as it has become bigger and incorporated more little frail bit. Sort of the worst of both worlds in my mind.
I think any good line needs a mix of creatures and humans. If you want to run human on human games, that is easy enough to sort out, but outside of historical/modern games I think there is almost always some kind of non-human protagonist. That said, I would love to see some creatures that aren't just humanoid aliens, or anthropomorphic. I remember as a kid how much I loved the Dralasites from the old Star Frontiers game (space D&D, basically). They were Amoebas, so the "what they look like" basically became what you could think up. For the benefit of using some equipment, they became a bit humanoid, but...

Not entirely.

Star Frontiers also has a host of other great races:

Hi Erik,

I had a look at zombiesmith and i like some of the concepts, they are full of character and energy which always gets my attention...

Galactic Marshals sounds like an interesting concept and the intergalactic cop-bounty-hunters is a really great concept and has a lot of scope to it...

Can you post here one  picture of something that really gets your attention when you see and inspires you? please...

I like some of the concepts in your second picture.

They look like they would be fun to sculpt  But someone has already sculpted i'm guessing ?

That is what i find great about sci-fi that it has many directions you can go in with regards to different races etc, it's basically endless really!

Hi Alan,

Are you sure you want to put that in this thread?  I don't want to steal your thunder, buddy.

There were originally five of these minis who got my imagination going.  There seem to be only two, now, plus the one at the top and the second link on another page.  These were really good ideas and full of character.  A little A-Team mixed with Han Solo and Firefly.

Job well done, Heresy!!!

http://heresyminiatures.com/shop/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=2_62&products_id=107

These guys are great for the cops back at the station:
http://heresyminiatures.com/shop/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=2_16

As for the first round of crooks to capture, I love Josh's Jaloof here:

https://www.zombiesmith.com/products/pah-jaloof-crew

https://sketchfab.com/3d-models/jaloof-unreleased-aphidhulk-project-6e7c969290fb49bcacab2373bf5a3b0d

Without helmets they look like space goblins, real little bastards who will break into your ship, storage, bank, store, anywhere, and steal things, leaving the place in chaos like after the cops execute a search warrant.  I don't think that's what Zombiesmith had in mind for them but that's how they look to me.

Another mission, these guys specializing in stealing organs for rich people.  Maybe they kidnapped a senator's son partying in Ibiza and he sent the Galactic Marshals after them.  A little less cartoony, a little more intimidating.

Another mission, make contact with what's left of a militia fighting against a plague, find the leader, arrest him/her:

https://www.beastsofwar.com/news/pig-irons-system-scavengers-hunt-loot/
http://www.pig-iron-productions.com/images/BIG_BOTTOM_BANNER_SYSSCAV.jpg

Turns out that the plague was started by an evil super-mega-pharma-corp that wants to wipe out the whole planet, so the mission changes to dodging plague zombies to finding evidence and getting it out, alive.

This is what I was envisioning.  I think that the concept of these special-mission intergalactic cops scales well into all sorts of possible adventures, environments, and types of minis.

Only problem is that my ability to draw, sculpt, and design is nothing compared to Zombiesmith, Pig Iron, Lucid Eye (another of my favorites), Anvil, or yours.

Okay, not exactly just one image....

I don't suppose I was encouraging you to make these, so much as I was mentioning that I like aliens to look alien, and not just look like a human with a lizard head, etc. This was just the best/most interesting examples I could come up with off the top of my head. Beyond that I can't really think of a place where "alien" didn't either look like a person in hollywood makeup, or sentient blob:

I mean, if I wanted that kind of alien in my gaming world, I've had the skills to sculpt that since about kindergarten.  lol

I just like aliens to look alien.

Hmmm, I'm pretty novice when it comes to sculpting. I just started playing around with some sculpts last night, so I'll see how that goes. If the goal is to "not look human" I feel like my sculpting skills are up to that task! I have yet to make anything that looks too human!  :?  lol

If you are referring to the blob type pictures, then yeah. I don't mean to brag, but I've been making a steady stream of blob looking things since about kindergarten!  ;)

If anything I do turns out to be worth sharing, I'll toss a picture in here.

Well, very WIP, but here is what I've come up with...

Start of a humanoid sculpt on the right for reference. He's a bit bigger than 15mm, but close. The start that I have is what I've been thinking of as a Calmian (root word, calm). Oh, and please ignore my pretty terrible photo. I think you will get the basic idea.

So I've been envisioning a Calmian as a sentient plant. The body is roughly a cactus barrel, and seated on top is something like a clam shell. On the Calmian home world, they take on these clam shell items similarly to hermit crabs. Calmians don't have weapons in the conventional sense, so the clam shell is part decoration (mating, status, etc) and part minimal protection from some ancient predator that probably landed on the Calmian heads and pecked them open to get at the fluids inside... like using a cactus for water.

So the Calmian "legs" are part of a vine structure that grows from the base of the Calmian. If a Calmian is unable to travel, these vines get long and may eventually snap off, unable to bear the weight of the Calmian. By "walking" these Calmian roots stay worn down and take on a tough, bark-like, texture. This allows Calmians to wander around on surfaces that would harm or kill humans (white hot metal, strong acids, etc). So long as the Calmian can not sink into the "whatever" pool, and it doesn't rise above several inches on their roots, they are safe.

Along with the mobility roots, Calmians have four other grappling root structures. Rising up from the base, it is customary that two of the grappling roots are used to hold the clam shell in place (though one, or none, can be used for short periods of time). The other two are used to support the Calmian Pearl (object in front of the Calmian under the clam shell). Calmians can use their grappling roots to manipulate simple machines, but primarily rely on other races to do the really technical stuff.

The Calmian pearl seems to be the source of what makes a Calmian sentient. An exterior soul, so to speak. It is also the primary weapon and defense mechanism of the Calmians. It acts as a highly effective sensory organ, allowing for odd combinations of human senses like smelling textures, or hearing color. Sneaking up on a Calmian is very difficult because it requires something akin to not existing. No color, no smell, no noise, no texture... nothing. When around other sentient beings, a Calmian Pearl creates a feeling of calm. More to the point, it creates a feeling of being totally alone with your own thoughts, in your mind. You may see the Calmian, and speak to the Calmian, but the sensation to humans is a bit like having a conversation in your head with your own voice while standing next to a cactus wearing a clam hat. It would be disconcerting if it didn't feel quite so normal. This effect is also possible with non-sentient beings, but Calmians find it much more difficult to placate a beast driven by base instincts like hunger, mating, territorial defense, etc. As a weapon, the Calmian Pearl can be used to insert thoughts and ideas into a sentient beings head. Thoughts to harm one's self, harm others around them, and even causing a person to hold their breath until they die are all possible.

Calmians are prized as companions because of their wide array of useful capabilities. However, because of their ability to discern dishonesty, subterfuge, and attempts at concealment they rarely keep company with liars, cheats, and scoundrels. Calmians find deceit confusing, more than irritating or inconvenient. Similar to having someone follow you around, always trying to convince you that the sky was red, and not blue. You might not view it as threatening, but you probably wouldn't put up with it if the conversation were brought up, insistently, every time the other person was around.  That is approximately how Calmians view the human tendency to lie, even to themselves.

Depending on how this fella turns out, I may make a few of them for my 15mm sci-fi game. Or I may just head onto the next odd alien creature.

I will try to move some of the sculpts along over the weekend, but I've been on another terrain building kick and that eats up my hobby time pretty solidly when I get working on it.

It is the only thing I've ever used. What is easier?  ???

I suppose that isn't totally true as I've also used brown stuff, but I would say that at my current skill level I'm not sure I can articulate whether I find there to be any differences beyond color.

You could use polymer clay, it can be good to practice as it does not go hard unless you bake it...

I use polymer clay for sculpting terrain items. I think it is fine for that but feels fiddly for sculpting miniatures.

Super Sculpey, mostly. I have some others but haven't played with them much. Oddly, I would like the sculpey to be firmer. I appreciate being able to manhandle a sculpture a bit without messing it up.

I started with greenstuff but have since moved onto ProCreate.

Greenstuff tends to be a softer material than ProCreate. Good if you're wanting to do large areas which can then be refined with another material, but I've found that the firmness of ProCreate allows for a better level of detail.

ProCreate also has a much faster drying time. Like 20 minutes till its mostly unusable - barring when you press firmly on it - then an hour before its totally solid. Which just means you work on a small area at a time, and that's fine as you wind up spending that long on one area anyway just to get it right.

I tend to find that ProCreate can be a bit sticky when dealing with very small amounts. Specifically if I'm sculpting something tiny on a model you can wind up pulling it from the model as it sticks more to your tool than the figure. Which is why most of the time I keep my tools wet. However more so than greenstuff I've also found that if you make the material too wet the whole section of clay can lift off.

Of the materials ProCreate seems the superior if you're wanting to achieve detail with less work due to its firmness, and the drying time is fantastic if you're like me and work on smaller sections at a time - where you have to build one layer on another. I haven't tried brown stuff or clays which you heat in the over, as that seems like more involvement to me. I'd rather work on one figure till I've done all I can, then work on another figure as that one dries, and repeat (I usually have 1-3 figures on the go at one time). Which also means you aren't tied to sculpting in your house (...hiking out to the middle of nowhere and sitting down for a few hours is my usual space...).

Ah, just my two cents. Oh, and I only use milliput for filling in large areas then working on top of it at best. Its  not suitable at all for actual detail on 28mm figures. Far too soft/ brittle.

Title: Re: Monsters Creatures sculpts Greens
Post by: CookAndrewB on August 14, 2019, 03:45:33 PM
Thanks for that input. I'll look at ProCreate. With Green Stuff I pretty much work with wet tools as it is, so that isn't a biggie. I assume you just mix up smaller batches of the stuff when you work? As much as you can use in 20 minutes? I don't mind that dry time, seems like it would work better for most cases. Never tried Milliput. Haven't had much desire to.
Title: Re: Monsters Creatures sculpts Greens
Post by: Wyrmalla on August 14, 2019, 10:06:45 PM
With ProCreate yeah I'll just make up a bit at a time. In most cases too much to realistically use to be honest, so I wind up chucking away a load as well as I realise I don't have the time to work on more things before it  hardens. It stays soft for longer than half an hour, however you want to have most of the shape worked out by then and now that its beginning to harden just work the details more.

...Said work a lot there. :P

I find that in cases there can be cracks in ProCreate in larger areas. Not massive to damage anything, hardly noticeable. These can be filled easily enough with a bit of milliput or something like Liquid Greenstuff (or whatever cheaper non-Games Workshop product's out there).

I have tried most polymers and epoxies , like procreate, milliput, different types of milliput etc, and green stuff. For me Greenstuff is the best.

You really have to try them all out for yourself and see what works best for you.

I tried out putty's many many years ago and thought they were rubbish but years later when my sculpting improved i tried them again and they worked really well.

Here is something i did in Greenstuff a while back...

My goal has always been to get to the point of being able to sculpt the same detail in any putty, which boils down to having patience and really taking your time... Do not rush your sculpting.
