Title: Cold War Europe 10mm
Post by: flatpack on September 18, 2017, 05:16:14 PM
Gents
Over the years I have been collecting 10mm Cold War kit from friends who just haven't been using it.
I've then had them lying around the place, but this summer I decided to finally get it out and tart it up.
Soviet forces have come on well, just the British forces to tart up now.
It did help that a few of us went to an N Gauge model railway show a couple of weeks ago, and I bought quite a few items that fit in well with my 10mm set up, such a cars, trucks etc.
Thinking about using modern rapid fire rules, as we just want to have some fun with the period and don't want to get too bogged down in technical details.
Here's some shots of the layout, with the soviets just entering.

The farm is yet another wonderful creation from has.been.
We'll get to actually playing when I've painted the Brits up.

Looks really great!

Thanks for sharing your pics.  They're superb, inspirational motivators.

Love the buildings, civilian vehicles, roads, etc., as well as of course, the heavy armor.

I've been working on 1/144th scale Cold War gaming as well.  It's a great scale for having a nice mix of terrain, troops, and armor, not to mention a lot more maneuvering room on the gaming table.

I'm going to give the old WRG 1950s+ rules a try with them, when time permits.

Found some nice, civie vehicles on eBay for a very reasonable price, so have a good mix of cars.  Need to get some trucks to add in to the mix too.

Still looking for Volvo autos for my Soviet invasion of Sweden, if anyone happens to find those for a reasonable price.

Wonderful job. They almost look bigger than 10mm.

Wow, your terrain looks very cool.
Love it, hope to see more.
Am interested in the cost of the tanks, if you would be so kind to share.

The tanks are only about £2-£3 each from skytrex action 200 range.
But as I say, I have bought most of these second hand from friends that have fallen out of love with the period.

Making the roads was fun, as I needed something black enough to represent tarmac, so I fished around on the web and discovered comments about using roofing felt, turned upside down.

Well I had plenty of roofing felt left from the wargaming bunker roof, so I used it.

Just got myself a white paint pen and a steel ruler, and after deciding on a road width I was happy with, I cut out the lengths and shapes I wanted, then used the white paint pen and ruler, to mark on the road markings. Simple.

Thread resurrection I know sorry.
I just wondered if you did anything else with this project or if anybody else is gaming with 10mm moderns?

No, never progressed it.
The lads have seen the stuff and want to get it to the table.
Might resurrect it over Christmas ?
Must find the British, and finish them off.

Hi thanks for the reply.
I am thinking of moving into 10mm as we are selling our house a d downsizing next year.
I had a load of the action 200 stuff in the 90s. I remember the figures being a bit rough. Just wondered if this was still the case? Also have the vehicle castings stood up to the test of time?

Title: Re: Cold War Europe 10mm
Post by: flatpack on December 07, 2018, 08:07:28 AM
Yes all my stuff is action 200, and it has all stood up to the test of time.
I think it’s a good scale to wargame in, just need to prove it out on the table now.
Here is a photo I posted a couple of weeks ago, after a friend has.been picked up some Christmas trees from the works shop, and kindly painted them for me.
They fit in well with the 10mm stuff.

My idea with the infantry, is to use the 6mm group of figures that you can see in front of the vehicles. Can’t remember who makes them. they all come molded onto the base.

Thanks for that.
I think I will send for some samples, maybe look at using the Timecast infantry.

Only that they are launching next year...box sets of Russians and brits...plus they have done a deal with a 10mm terrain company....

I for one will be interested...had great fun in the 80s with heroics and Ross kit using wrg rules...still have the figures and hopefully the rules

Do you think the old wrg rules will work ?
I was going to aim at the able archer set of rules.
They were free off the web, and were the modern version of “rapid fire”.
I’ve seen a couple of demo games over the last couple of years, using them, but in 20mm.
I want rules that are simple, fun, and you don’t end up with a car park full of tanks.

I am a big fan of Cold War Commander. I find they give great games. There is a bit of a learning curve. But nothing to bad.

Played Cold WAr Commander a couple of years ago.
We were using 3mm figures..they are nice.
Bought the rules, read the rules, went to the club to play a game with them, and freshly painted 3mm army.
Little did I know I was playing against a “rules lawyer”.
He knew rule 3b section zzzzz, and nuked half my army in one move. I was not a happy bunny.
Isn’t it strange how those games stick in your mind ?
As it was my first game, you would have hoped he would have taken things a little easier, but I suppose people like this exist everywhere in the hobby.
Guess what ? That put me off the rules...oh well.

Dump the rules lawyer, keep the rules. We do huge games with CWC, great set of rules and would really suit your stuff.

Flatpack. Empress are play-testing adding vehicles to their 'Danger close(?)' infantry rules.
They seem to be aiming for a simple, quick, fun set of rules.

Yes I did see that about Empress.
More 28mm than 10mm me thinks.

I'm going to be doing 1956 Cold War in 10mm, which allows you to use a lot of WW2 kit. For vehicles everything that Butler 3D do can be bought in 10mm if you ask. Same price as their 12mm

Just found an old picture of has.been’s super farm that he did for this period.
Really must get a game of this going.
If only I could stop straying into different periods of warfare....oh the joy of toy soldiers.

Back on it.
Took the British, and infantry off on holiday, to try to get them finished so we could actually use them.
All based now, but need to finish off some of the British armour.
Some progress photos....

And here we go again.
A mate (cheers Ian) got me on to Battlefront Northag rules.
Rules ordered and now received.

Had a quick read through, seem good.

Already got the vehicles, just need finishing off.
Also got scenery and found another stash of fir trees for German Forests, even more are good to go thanks to has.been and his £1 trees from the works here in the UK.

Now looking at air support.
Recommendations are to go with 1/144 aircraft.
Got plenty of these, still in their boxes from several years ago.
So dug them out....

Then moved on the actually building and painting one.
Went for the hind first.

I’m happy the way that has come out, so built and undercoated the Tornado and the SU25 yesterday.

Also discovered a metal lynx helicopter from Minifigs that I had completely forgotten about.

Watch this space...something might happen.

Bob, what are your base sizes?
As I now have (Butler's Printed Models 1/200th) French.
Must find out about their paint schemes, & how to clean
off the 'scaffolding/spru' without breaking any fragile bits.

Very nice. I have a large collection on Skytrex “Action 200” 1/200 ( or 10mm stuff) for 1944/45 Europe and 1939-40, plus Vietnam The models are very variable. The Vietnam are lovely, some of the early war very crude.

However, these are quite small compared to “new” 10mm ranges. I suspect the situation akin to when 25mm morphed into 28mm....or bigger. I am using “large” 6mm infantry ( eg Mainforce Miniatures) as the infantry component.

My group of fellow gamers are sticking to 1/300 for moderns as some of the new ranges are very nice. We hope to use PSC’s new “NORTHAG” rules for large armour-heavy games, but also game in 15mm for smaller scale actions.

I too am using the main force miniatures as they do a job in this scale.

This afternoon, I’ve finished my 1/144 scale Soviet SU-25 ground attack aircraft.
It’s come out ok I think.

For the new Battlefront Northag rules, I think I need some “dug in” markers for my NATO forces.
The normal way, would be a marker with “dug-in” written on it, placed in front of the armoured vehicle.
I didn’t think this would look to good, so I wondered what I could use instead of just the marker.
I came up with these instead.
Made from a cardboard base, the sprew from a model kit, then the remnants from a tie strap as the back wall. Polyfiller all over this, then when dry, paint, bit of grass and some small bushes.
I think they will look better on the table, instead of just a “dug-in” marker.
