So a project that is a departure from usual 40K fare on LAF. I've been working on and off on some generic early Successor armies (one with and eastern theme and one with a western theme) with the idea of using them to final get playing Hail Caesar. I decided to use Newlines Designs lovely little metal 20mm range with occasional 1/72 plastics to fill gaps (or save money)
As I’m going to build two armies I figured I could base them how I wanted as long as it was consistent across both armies so I settled for 60mmx40mm bases using 4 bases for a normal sized unit (and two for a small unit and six bases for a large unit) the number of figures per base depends on the unit type as follows
Infantry
skirmishers 3 figures per base
light 4 figures per base
heavy/medium 6 figures per base
Cavalry
heavy/medium 3 figures per base
light/horse archer 2 figures per base
Generals will be mounted on round bases one size for division commanders and a larger one for the C-in-C.
For those interested there is a whole lot of stuff on my blog here
https://jonsotherwargamesblog.wordpress.com/category/172-ancients/page/3/ (https://jonsotherwargamesblog.wordpress.com/category/172-ancients/page/3/)
for this thread I'm mostly just going to share photos of the painted miniatures. I've already painted quite a bit so this first bit might be a bit pic heavy and then I'll update as I get more stuff finished.
Hail Caesar uses "divisions" to build an army so I've followed suit and grouped the units into divisions (even if it doesn't quite feel right to call them divisions in ancient gaming)
So first up a division of mercenaries for my Western successor

Fantastic especially love how well the elephants have come out.
Thank you.
The HaT ones certainly can't be beaten on price you get three (bigger miniatures) in a box for about the same cost as one Newline Metal nelly (which is still a very nice little miniature)
-
Very well done. :-* :-* :-*
Keep it coming.
Its rare someone publish some 20mm in some boards on LAF. :)

Thanks I realise its not the most popular of size/scales but I think it has a lot to offer both in terms of budget and being a good scale to paint.
I also finished a unit of Greek archers (not the most exciting of units but valuable support for the pikes)

Although i´m a big fan of 28mm i really never gave up of 20mm.
I have a lot of 20mm metals too ranging from ancients, dark ages, crusaders and acw/old west.
Some day i will have them all painted... lol lol
-
Neat painting! Lively colors, make your troops very photogenic!
I like very much the hoplites' shield emblems! Well done!
-
A second pike unit for my western successor army. I need to add some extra miniatures when time allows to flesh my pike units out but I want to finish all the initial units for both armies firsts. This unit had one of those dreaded spray varnish frosting issues which I think I've repaired the worst of the damage with brush applied gloss and then mat varnish.

Thanks. I can't take to much credit for the shields as they are transfers from Little Big Man Studios.
-
Very nicely done!
I did the same back in the day to play Warmaster but quit because nobody around wanted 20mm or plastics :-[
Here you can see my Zvezda cavalry in 60x40 base (sorry about the size):

Great looking army! Thanks for sharing the pics with us! :)
-
Very nice and good to see some 20mm.
-
Thanks for the nice comments guys :)
Blacksmith@ nicely done those Zvezda miniatures are nice shame that most of their stuff is OOP and that they mix so many different types of cavalry in one box.
So a couple of photos of my next Hail Caesar "division" the western successor Phalanx. Once both armies are finished I think I will come back and beef up this division with more pike and enlarge the existing pike units with two more bases each but for now it is done. The other picture is my mythical western successor C-in-C who I've named Korragos (meaning “the leader of the army” in ancient Greek according to the net).

@Diablo Jon: I've got some Zvezda, Hat, and other ancients that I'll likely never get around to working on. If you think that you might be interested in some, I could compile a list. I wouldn't want very much for them, either.

Thanks for the offer mate but right now my Lead/plastic pile needs a bit of reduction before I get in anymore new toys.

Persian Levies for my Eastern Successor army this time HaT 1/72 plastics rather than my normal newline 20mm metals. Not the greatest miniatures but they will do a job.

That's some seriously good army painting. In my experience 20mm can be a real pain but you managed to make them look proper and sound. Hats off!
Years ago I had the pleasure to play with Frank Becker's 20mm armies (Macedonians against Indians, some photos here (https://tabletopdeutschland.com/2011/07/23/makedonien-%e2%80%93-eine-field-of-glory-armee/)); great fun, and it was hard to refrain from buying another huge pile of figures. :D

The finished Eastern heavy cavalry division lead by my imigi-nation successor Karanos (the self styled new Alexander), who just like Alexander the Great likes to lead his heavy cavalry from the front, and his heavy Cavalry.

Another unit finished this time Cappadocian light cavalry for my western successor army. As usual 20mm metal Newline miniatures. I'm hoping to have both armies finished by new year that means a unit of Greek heavy cavalry and two units of eastern Phalanx to go in 3 weeks :?

You're churning these out at a scary pace. :o
So, no doubt you'll get the two armies finished in time. If you field 'em in anger, don't forget to take some more pictures. Good luck anyway!

Thanks its those pesky pikemen that always seem to take the time and the next batch are local levy types in median dress so extra patterns on the trousers.. :?.

I clicked on this thread thinking it needed some support for 20mm. I am happy that support isn't alone. Nice painting and basing.

Second part of the western light cavalry “Division” this time Tarantine cavalry who have “come up with him from the sea”. Although originally from the Greek Italian city of Tarantum the term increasingly came to mean skirmishing, shielded, light cavalry during the Hellenistic era . These miniatures are Newline Designs Greek light cavalry with added shields and cut down spears to represent Javelins.

Thanks guys. The shield transfers are Little Big Man Studios hoplite shields, designed for HaT 1/72 apparently, but they fit Newline shields pretty well.

Thanks Jon.
I need some for my carthaginians and celtiberians. :)

A couple more updates. The commander of the Western light cavalry "Division" is finished so heres a shot of the whole group

and I have completed my Greek heavy cavalry for my Western successor army (as usual 20mm Newline Designs)
that leaves me with two Eastern pike (already started) units to finish to this project by the end of the year deadline I set myself. Whether I can do that with Christmas on the way waits to be seen and then of course I couldn't resist Newline's Christmas sale >:D

So with the festivities over I got to take some pictures of my latest unit. Pikemen for my Eastern successors using Newline's Seleucid pike miniatures. I've gone for a more colourful "Persian" look for these guys over the more dour Western pike.

Just one more pike unit to go to finish the two original armies as I planned them. I have more stuff to add but, after many months of painting pretty much 20mm ancients, I'm going to have a bit of a break and cut lose on a 28mm Fantasy project I've been planning one the last pike unit is finished.
-
finally finished the two armies
Ok I know an army is never finished but I did finish off the last eastern pike block for my 20mm Successor armies meaning both armies are complete to the original target I set myself when I started this project last year. So here they are on full parade
First up The Army of Korragos (Western successor) as detailed here
https://jonsotherwargamesblog.wordpress.com/2017/07/30/the-army-of-korragos-western-successor/
(https://jonsotherwargamesblog.files.wordpress.com/2018/04/wp_20180417_20_03_25_rich-2.jpg?w=640&h=480)
and secondly The Army of Karanos (eastern successor) as detailed here
https://jonsotherwargamesblog.wordpress.com/2017/07/23/the-army-of-karanos-eastern-successor/
(https://jonsotherwargamesblog.files.wordpress.com/2018/04/wp_20180417_19_49_24_rich.jpg?w=640)
I will certainly re-visit these armies at some point (though as you might have noticed I’m on a fantasy gaming fix at the moment) I already have some extra units for both armies in the lead pile to increase the pike blocks and add extra light infantry and heavy cavalry.
The Eastern army’s Indian allies could be expanded into an army in their own right (in fact I already have a load of Newline Indians to do just that) or could be morphed into a Seleucid or Pontic army with a few extra units. The Parthian Division could also be expanded into an army.
The Western army could be morphed into Alexander’s army or a historical early successor army (can I say Pyrrhus ). While the Greek division could be expanded into army for late hoplite warfare.
For now though I’m just going to bask in the glory of actually finishing one of my projects.

Very well done. :-* :-*
I wish i was disciplined like you.
Too much projects and none finished. o_o

They look great! I am a HUGE fan of 1/72 and 20mm. You really did a 1st class job on them.
Thanks,
John
