This is my part of a joint project: I am building the terrain and a friend will be designing scenarios and building gangs. Our goal is to have three tables set up for three linked scenarios in time for trumpeter's Salute in this coming March. I do feel like the clock is ticking... o_o
Table #1 is a jungle themed table a polynesian island somewhere, based loosely on the short lived TV series Balls of the Brass Monkey, (or perhaps it was Tales of the Brass Balled Monkey...) anyway Murdock (my partner in Pulp crime) told me about it even though I don't remember ever seeing it. Here are a few pictures of my start; there are more on my blog (https://apulpalleyproject.blogspot.ca/) as well as a little more explanation..

nice rock carving
-
Thank you secharles. As progress is being made I will have an update by next weekend.
-
You appear to be off to a good start. That is wonderful work on carving the Styrofoam. Mine never looks that good.
-
Very cool! Reminds me, I need make some more terrain. ;)
-
Fantastic work. Can't wait to see the progress.

What kind of putty are you using?
-
I use Sculptamold (https://www.amaco.com/products/sculptamold-sc-3-3-bag) mixed with paint. Sculptamold is a paper mache product: a form of plaster mixed with shredded fibre which gives a rough, lumpy finish. Ideal for rough ground or giving some texture to an otherwise flat surface. Amaco (the makers of Sculptamold) also make a product called Claycrete which looks similar but I haven't tried yet. It may not be as adhesive as Sculptamold which sticks to foam quite well as it is meant to go over a wire armature.
-
I have pummeled the table with washes, glazes and drybrushing.

Up next, static grass, tufts and flock. More pictures on my plog. (https://apulpalleyproject.blogspot.ca/)

superb!
-
Looking great! Is there a waterfall in the works? ;)
-
Well, yes and no. David who is designing the scenario wants a secret door at the back of the waterfall for the characters to enter which means that they have to be able to move there. If modelled a waterfall that would impede that. We will give the scenario a run through in a couple of weeks and if he feels ok with me putting one in then I will happily do that. :D
-
More work done. Just about finished.

Very nice, but I anti-board in general.
Lol...I guess my pro-board affiliation is now common knowledge :D.

Looking good sir!

Thank you Lost Egg :).
My trees are all finished; most have been done for quite a while now but the finishing touches were just done this past weekend. I also added some static grass and a few more small tufts.

You in with the Vancouver crowd, or d'you mean Victoria? Seems like a lot of Canadian LAFers are from BC.
-
Mid-Vancouver Island actually. But yeah, quite a few people I 'meet' online that live in Canada are either in BC or Ontario.

Great googgily moogily! :o :o That looks amazing. Thanks for sharing.

Thank you guys. :)

That's alright... :o

Thank you blacksoilbill. :)
My gaming partner David had his boys and a couple of their friends run through a scenario for the table. They got to contribute to the game by devising their own leagues; consequently we had Imperial Stormtoopers, Daleks, Bob Murch Cultists and modern adventurers searching for Dr. Who and his Tardis lol.
As I got there late, just a couple of pics...
Someone decided that the stone stairs are perilous terrain for Daleks and consequently they get ambushed by angry natives:

The cultists have a hard time subdueing Dr. Who's associates:

Hmmm... can you see them here (https://apulpalleyproject.blogspot.ca/)? They were uploaded to Google Photos from my camera, then linked to the blog. I wonder if is just too much...

Nope, I just a blank space where the photo would be.

Ok... it looks like I will have to download them then upload them to blogspot ::) :? :-I

Ahem... Take 2!
A small blog update (https://apulpalleyproject.blogspot.ca/). David and his boys give a scenario a run through:

Love the finished stuff. Nice to see Bob's cultist minis getting more use. I cant wait to see the urban stuff finished too.
-
Looks fun. I like the red-shirt evil henchmen :D
-
Thanks guys :). The goal is to have the buildings to a standard that we can have a play-through with them by Dec. 31st.
-
Significant progress over the last few days (despite working...). The base of the table is underway:

Some great work going on there Codesticker :)
-
Thank you Panama. :)
-
Good heavens, Cod, I envy you your productivity! Looking very good!
-
Wow! Inspiring work. :-*
-
Thank you for the compliments guys.
-
Codsticker, amazing work! Very inspiring. I want to come to your house to play!
I looked through your blog, great stuff. Any intention to talk a bit more on your painting techniques on your buildings? I generally get the 4Ground buildings because they are already painted. Are you spray painting the buildings, or using a brush?
Matt
-
Hi Matt, thank you for the compliments. Although I have an airbrush I have been really enjoying using my brushes. The buildings are basecoated with a aerosol spray paints: white on the interior and either grey, tan or red-brown on the exterior. The painted interiors are coarsely wet blended two colours. For the exterior I pick out specific blocks in two tones; I follow that with random dabs with both a slightly darker mix (concentrated along the bottom where dirty water would splash up on the building) and a slightly lighter mix (I try to gently push the paint into the MDF). I then apply streaks using very thin black, brown and near-white paint. The streaks I try to place where I imagine some rain water might collect and run down the walls. The white streaks might be chalk-like residue you used to get from paint or mortar- it might also be bird shit. :D
-
More progress. After several hours put in over my Christmas break my goal has been reached: the table to a stage we could give it a test run yesterday.
the interiors of all the buildings are done:

Table surface painted (mostly- the other side of the canal is just primed):
More pictures and words on my blog (https://apulpalleyproject.blogspot.ca/).
My friend David, his son and a couple of his friends gave the table a little run through; A Race Against Time was the scenario. Over-sized Mandalorians have the police chief surrounded in his car:
Some gangsters attempt to sweep around the buildings and catch the Mandalorians in a pincer movement:
The Red Devils at first try to use their "sniper" to pick off the Mandalorians however their armour and cover make them nearly impossible to take out.(https://i.imgur.com/gLVt9cj.jpg)
So they attempt to grab a plot point and a coffee at the local corner store:
The Cowboys have easy access to 2 plot points on their side of the canal but can only make good on one of them:
The game ends with the alien mercenaries holding out against all comers, and dragging the police chief from his vehicle:

:o
cor blimey, some really great stuff in here.
-
Looking great! ;)
I am sure it has already been answered, but who makes those buildings?
The canal looks amazing!
-
Thank you for the compliments guys. :)
All the MDF buildings are Sarissa Precision; the whole lot below (minus the plastic fences) are part of their cityblock deal:

It's funny what ticks the boxes but the last two photos of the bridge and canal and water look excellent and certainly ticks mine.
Amazingly fast creation - wow.
The vehicles look good, do they scale ok with the figure?

They area smidge too big, but not much. They would scale very well with GW style figures.

I have been concentrating on the table surface this past week:

Missed this thread up until now - awesome pulp stuff, sir!
I see you're on Vancouver Island. I'm down in Victoria with a bunch of pulp stuff. Where are you based?
I also see on your blog that you're prepping for Trumpeter Salute - if we can't connect before then, I'll see you in Burnaby!
-
The canal walls have come out very nice and authentic looking, it will be good to see this completed.
I think you said you used modge Podge for the water, does this give the ripple effect, from what I've read I would have expected a smooth finish? The ripple looks better imo.

Thank you Vagabond. After several layers of brushing the modge podge on flat I did the last one in ridges across the canal; the end result was the ripple effect. The one problem is that is was so thick that a few bubbles formed. If someone mentions it I will just tell them it is starting to rain. :D
-
There's always bubbles rising in rivers canals and lakes. But raining sounds as good as anything else. lol
-
Beautiful terrain! :-*

I suspect I've met DaveB while we were both gaming at UVic on Sundays, as some of his figures look somewhat familiar. DavidM I don't recognize.
If you folks are running two or three games of Pulp Alley at Trumpeter Salute and I'm running two myself, it's going to be a very, very well represented ruleset!

Well, it is in my games, recently...

My Sarissa Precision buildings are now painted. As may details are still working there way to me via moose sleigh I will have to move onto other things for the time being.

You have taken these buildings to a nice finish.
8) 8)
I have a few of these, so when it comes to doing them I shall come back for a look at yours.
:)
-
Thank you Mason. I quite like these kits, they are perfect for our purposes as they easily allow roofs to come off and figures to be placed inside but they have some limitations largely due to the nature of laser cutting MDF. That is, they lack texture and fine detail although the iron railing by the small stairs of the super market is quite fine. Ideally there would either resin or 3d printed details that could be added.
-
I think they look great Codsticker & have plenty of detail tbh, I've always made my own buildings using cork tiles but seen your great work & others on MDF buildings I'm think they are the way to go :)
-
I've been watching how this is coming together, and enjoying the progress.
However I didn't comment earlier as that bridge always felt out of place (to my eye anyway) ,and didn't feel I could comment until I could suggest a reasonably price alternative.
For me its not got the height or texture/structure to compliment the buildings.(plus the depth and texture of the canal)
So I'd recommend you take a look at Modelux ,I've found they're website a bit ropey (Windows 10 phone gets a huge amount of lag when trying to load each page.) you can find them on eBay as well. They're pre-painted and weathered .the bridges are designed to be use for either road or rail.
They're 'oo' and 'n' gauge. But they'll easily work for 28mm.
I'm not plugging the company and I've put my money where my mouth is and ordered a Gasometer.(just about every big English town had one.)
Mark.
-
Thanks tin shed gamer I will check them out. I agree about the bridge- it is not ideal but I thought I would use it as I already had it.
-
Just to tempt you some more.
This is from Warbases
-
I checked out the bridge options on Modelux and all the options are either too long, too short and/or too narrow, which is unfortunate because it is beautiful stuff. I am considering getting some rail cars for the tracks (which are still in the post :() as my initial plan was to have a rail line instead of the canal but David suggested a canal and we figured out a way to have both.
-
Interested to see how that works out.
I received the modelux kit way way over engineered dozens of individual parts not a single net used on anything .everything was de framed (so lots damaged) very disappointed 😞 Recycled into a water tower so not a complete loss.

That is very disappointing Mark :(
I have finished painting the Italeri bridge and based and flocked the Ramshackle Barn:

Excellent work.
You have certainly improved that bridge no end and done a fine job on the barn.
Lovely tufting!

Thank you Mason. :)

I agree, although I'm not sure what lovely tufting means, it's probably a south London thing and we had probably better not enquire too closely.
It's all coming together nicely
-
Fine work the bridge is just right & the wooden barn type building is just so full of detail that I'm sure if I looked at it a 100 times I would notice something else : )
-
Damn fine work! :-*
-
Nice work all around, and really like the grass with the barn, inspires me to revisit my barn to enhance the rustic overgrown look that is currently lacking.
I too have a couple of those street cars, mine are still somewhat flatter than yours. ;)
-
How wide is the canal? As I'm at the York show on Sunday,So I might as well see if I can find some alternative ideas.(going a few people plus dropping off work. So I'm bound to have some dead time.)

The canal is 14cm wide. Thank you for offering to have a sniff around; I look forward to what you discover. :)

I had a damned good root around at York on Sunday. Unfortunately virtually all the mdf offerings were poor. Consisting of nothing but blank mdf silhouettes of girder frames.
In fact in the box girder bridge category Sarissa offered the most detailed frames. The only bridges that offered any real value, and scenario options were the Sarissa Canal bridges. Unfortunately I couldn't find any dimensions on the website. As I got completely side-tracked with the gangs of Rome mdf.It slipped my mind to ask the actual dimensions for the span of these bridges.
In fact I came away with three sets, including the temple. Which is a very interesting piece of kit. It'll fit in with everything I do. It'll work as a civic building in a 20th century setting too,(law courts, city hall sort of thing.)
Right waffle over now I've seen what you've done with the canal I'd say save your money that bridge has done you proud.
I'd recommend you push the hedges back and have a towpath along the canal edge and a waist high brick wall behind the hedge on the town side(possibly not a continuous hedge row ,only even two three small shrub sized lengths.) then just one or two grass tufts the town side of the low wall, and the towpath side
As it'll give a more natural look and make the transition from one bank to the other, look less stark.
It's a trick I use on museum builds. It helps subtly draw your eye in the transition from rural to urban. Rather than green, green, green, wham town.

That is a really good suggestion- I just don't know if I will have the time. What about a wooden fence? Not solid enough? Another thing is that this really started out as a North American town. The canals here don't have tow paths as most were initially built during the mid to late 19thC. Really, for a NA canal the width is quite compressed; the earlier ones were fairly narrow but the ones built last century are quite wide by comparison. For example, the modern (4th) Welland canal by the town of my birth, St. Catharines Ontario:
This is an example of one of the older locks of the second Welland canal, which is what I had in mind: I imagined this canal to be a retired older canal (hence the low foot bridge).

-
Absolutely what ever you feel would work.I think a wooden fence would add another layer of colour and texture.
A towpath is just a way of softening the transition. If it doesn't translate to your neck of the woods, then it doesn't translate. No biggie 😊.
At the risk of going all Jeff Goldbloom.on you life finds a way . The larger the scale the less sterile the transition .a rule of thumb - the smaller the scale the sharper the corners.

Just a few pieces finished; I am now waiting for some more stuff to arrive.

An amazing bit of work Codsticker it a joy watching all your great work :)
-
Thank you Panama. Really, it's just about all done. Some street terrain still hasn't arrived yet from the UK; it may not be finished in time. A third table was planned but not only do we not have a time/table slot available for it at Trumpeter's I spent the better portion of the last two weekends on it, only to have it look like shit. :( >:( So... I will have another crack at as I have 3 more weeks to get it figured out.
-
I may have missed this elsewhere but are your urban streetlamps railway modelling pieces?

I believe so; I bought them off ebay. They actually come wired.

Fantastic terrain. Very impressed!
We have a new figure pack called 'Everything but the Goose', which includes a small statue of a Gold Monkey that would be a great plot point to have in the cave behind the waterfall on your first table!

those crates look nice; great job on the waterfall too!

Thank you both. :)

That is excellent. The inspiration for the table came from the episode with the waterfall and the killer monkeys.
-
I know, I recognized it from the first picture you'd posted with the raw carved blocks. Having made the miniatures for the series, I've become a big fan. I'm currently about a group of 10 of the Lucid Eye Simians to use as the killer monkeys in the same Pulp Alley game!
-
I hadn't even heard of the series until David mentioned to me as a source of inspiration when we started discussing this project for Trumpeter's. I have only watched what I could find of that episode on YouTube.
-
I had not heard of it until backers selected it to make a pack of figures from on our last kick starter.
I got the DVD box set from Amazon for not very much. It is very Pulpy!
-
Amazing job on the waterfall! :-*

Thank you Mr.Phipps. :)
I have added some street scatter: some Fenris Games trash cans, pallets, man hole covers and fire hydrants:

The scatter terrain is certainly worthwhile in terms of making the table set up 'pop'.

Thank you Elk. :)
Having scrapped my idea for a water table, I have flipped the plywood over so I can make a remote airstrip. Not too many features on this table; a Quonset hut to start with.

Your moving on to a board that'll interest many Pulp heads.(myself included :D) So I'd definitely recommend you give this board its own thread.
Because everyone wants to be able to throw a Pulp airfield together.otherwise its likely to be missed
Have you considered the Sarissa German control tower as (for me) its got more of an art deco feel than the British version.
Mark.
-
I think a Pulp airstrip thread would be a great idea. It does come up quite a bit so would likely attract a bit of interest.
-
Inspiring work! Can't wait to see more. :D
-
Thanks guys. The inspiration for it came from a trip I took to the west coast of Vancouver Island with a friend who was getting hours in for his pilots license. We landed on a strip that had been built during WW2. It was nearly 30 years ago so my memory of it is foggy but there wasn't any buildings left, just a lot of cracked tarmac with grass growing up.
BTW, Pulp Alley was well represented at Trumpeter's Salute in Vancouver this past weekend. Wirelizard's game was very popular and our's was well attended. More on my blog (https://apulpalleyproject.blogspot.ca/).

And bring it to Enfilade, please!
