*Updated 27/05/19 with some buildings, see page 3!*
A variety of pictures of my Mexican Adventure figures, as and when I finish them and get photos taken. Unfortunately my photograph skills are fairly woeful, so I'm not sure I really do any of the figures justice. However, comments and such forth are always welcome!
My collection thus far is made up, predicatably, of Gringo 40s lovely Maximillian range, supplemented by Foundry Mexicans, also nice figures but much smaller. They won't mix, but they'll do in seperate units.

I have Ottomans and Foreign Legion still to paint - hopefully early next year, but a bunch more pictures to put up too. I'm hoping Ged is going to add to the range as there is plenty more potential, not least Imperial Mexicans!
More to follow... comments, criticism, advice on a. painting faces so they don't come out as zombies and b. photography are always welcome!
Cheers

Excellent work!!!! ;)

Thanks for the kind words all, more pics to follow next week after Christmas.
I've had to put my brushes away, but the crates/barrels (I hestitate to call it scenery as it's just there as a bit of backdrop until I free up some storage space) etc are still in place so hopefully I might get a chance to sit a few more figures in front of them and take a few more photos.
What rules do you plan to use?
Primarily Sharp Practice 2 - generally my units are in 8s or 16s for SP2 groups, (or groups of 6/10 etc out of those).
I've downloaded the Maximilian list, although making my own forces rather than those listed as, generally, for units like the French and the Imperialist Mexicans there aren't the figures available. Gringos have Foreign Legion but I'd love to see more French in the range, and Foundry have Imperials but in packs all of one pose and I like variety in my units at this scale, especially when it's skirmish-level.
For smaller 1-1 skirmishes I have and have read through A Fistful of Lead - Horse and Musket, although I also have Brink of Battle, but I haven't used either yet.
If you could, please, take some close ups!
I can try! But close-ups show up the flaws in the painting! lol
I will be expanding this range hopefully in 2018..i have some
units in mind ;)
Jolly good! Otherwise I'll have to send you more emails "suggesting" expansions to the range... :D
Merry Christmas all!

Update 02/02 - Comparisons
It's been a bit longer than I intended what with one thing and another, but next up in this occasional gallery (!) are some comparison shots of various figures. I've not really been able to find many which put Gringos up against the Foundry range, so why not do it myself! :D
(https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-_jj6K9JqK-Y/Wj01o219y8I/AAAAAAAAAlw/OYWQHIHiD8AE7PoL_ZoENkNzdz3fsz6kwCEwYBhgL/s1600/Foundry-Gringo%2BInf%2BComparison%2BResize.JPG)
L-R: Foundry (OW164) ; Gringo Belgian Officer ; Foundry (OW167) ; Gringo Republican ; Foundry (OW 162) ; Gringo Republican in Shako
The Foundry are in their Old West (OW) range, I haven't got any of their specific Maximilian range yet but I'm imagine they'll be similar size. The figures themselves are fine, some very nice, but obviously size-wise they don't match up at all with Gringo. Whether it's the case for all the packs I don't yet know but they're very much best used in different units.
On the left the mounted officer from Foundry pack OW167, and on the a mounted Republican from Gringo

Left - pack mule from Warlord Games, and Right - pack mule from Gringo
So, lots of mix and match and not a lot of comparability, but in the end in a game it doesn't make too much of a difference really, and each of the ranges has got something to offer for the Mexican Adventure. I'll certainly be getting Foundry's Emperor's Battalion and Imperial infantry and finding some of their other figures to give the units a bit of variety (unless Ged brings out Imperial infantry and some command first!) :D
More will follow!
As ever thoughts, suggestions etc more than welcome.
-
Very nice my friend 👍
-
Thank you for sharing your comparison pictures, eager to see your figures in your next game!
-
If I'm remembering correctly the Foundry "French Foreign Legion or filibusters" packs that are supposed to be the characters from Camerone are a bit bigger and chunkier than the rest of the line. So they might fit in better with the Gringos.

Great pictures..beautiful work,That;s what I did ,I have Foundry units and Gringo units..and it works fine.
-

Oh, a game! Few and far between I'm afraid, and lots of bits and pieces in storage at the moment. I have almost got enough units and such done for a decent game though, so if I sort out terrain I might be just about there eventually! :D

Yes - I seem to recall reading something about that too - next plan is to get a sample of those and a sample of the actual Maximillian range now that it's been re-released, rather than the Mexicans I have which are from the Old West Range. I don't mind having some Foundry and some Gringo units, but as you can see from the pics it reaches a point where it does look a little bit silly!
-
Hi all. Great minis, a project close to my heart.
Anyway, regarding the Foundry Foreign Legion Filibusters - I have quite a few, and they are indeed larger than the recently re-released Maximillian range. I think they'd be a good fit with Gringo40s -
-
A few more pictures, painted a little bit ago but only now being posted. I'm getting to a point where I have enough on both sides for a decent Sharp Practice game; all I need to do now is get cracking on getting some coherent terrain together!
First up, some more 'volunteers' for the Imperial cause - both of which made appearances in the latest LPL too.
French Foreign Legion (Gringo40s)
And the Sudanese/Egyptian Battalion (lifted straight from my LPL entry I'm afraid, so the picture isn't great:
Also Gringo40s, although I wonder whether a different sculptor - they seemed much thinner and more perpendicular (if that makes sense!) than the others in the range. Still look good painted up though!

Next up - Republican irregular lancers:
These are all from Gringo too - but I've modified a few of them, which I explain below. First up, the whole unit:
So, the unit is made up of Gringos regular lancers and irregular lancers - but, as I wanted a bit more variety, I've done a bit of surgery on them. The chap front centre with the sword is the Regular Officer from his range, but instead of the sideways head and sword straight up (see my earlier pic of Republican Cavalry) I chopped his head off and turned it straight, then pinned it back in and built up a high collar with greenstuff. I also removed the sword arm and turned it so the sword is forward and flatter, again liquid and solid greenstuff to fill in the resultant gaps.
I also changed a few of the others:
In the picture above, the figure in the centre is the 'standard' figure from Gringo. These three are all that figure, but on the left I removed the arm and turned it so the lance was held more aloft, and in the figure on the right again removed the arm then pinned back in to have the lance more angled forward. Only slight changes, but they really make a difference to the look of the figures I think.
Finally, here we have the standard figure on the right, and on the left the lance arm removed, turned and pinned back. Again a very slight alteration, but added to the variety in horse helps to make the irregular lancer unit look, well, irregular!
Plans for more units - more from Foundry to flesh out the Imperials, even if they do look rather miniature compared to Gringo, and having seen his announcement on new Republican infantry will definitely acquire some of those, I'm hoping they will include some command/officer types amongst them.
Oh, and of course, I need to build some terrain!
-
Gorgeous and very well-painted! Horses and riders! Well done! Cheers!
-
Oh yes! Top stuff. All nice to see, but I especially like the lancers.
-
Great stuff, especially the lancers. ;D

Very nice :)

Very nice collection,I especially like your conversions.

Thanks for the kind words all. I think the next plan will be to start focussing on getting more coherent terrain together. Maybe at Colours making a beeline for some of Charlie Foxtrot's Pantile range!

Excellent - care to give us any clues as to what? (Artillery? Command? Imperials? :D)

happy to take any requests! :D

After my usual hiatus in updating this thread, I have a few more pictures to share; over Easter I was able to put together some buildings, as I have finally started putting together terrain for this (whilst I await the artillery that I'm sure Ged promised me he was going to produce! lol). It has taken until today's bank holiday however to get round to uploading these...
Actually - the buildings I acquired from the Bazar on here pre-painted so I can't claim credit for painting the structures themselves, but I added the bases and all the various bits and pieces around them etc, including the awning on the market building and suchlike.
They're quite North African in appearance I grant you, but I think they should do ok in Mexico too! Plan is also to acquire a couple of Foxtrot Charlie's pantile range such as the hermitage as a centrepiece, but I'm quite pleased with these overall as a starter.

The clutter in and around the buildings really adds a bit of character I feel, and when they're put next to each other creating alleyways with boxs and barrels and so forth just enlivens things a bit.
As always, comments welcome! I have a lot of lead in the mountain at the moment, but once I have cleared all that I'll be returning to Mexico to produce some more Republican units, and possibly an Imperial unit or two too if I can bring myself to do all the head-swapping I'll need to do...!
-
They’ll do nicely :)
-
Look beautifully multi purpose.
-
Those buildings are cool and could pass for a number of settings.
