Title: The 40,000 universe, explored in smaller scales: 3mm
Post by: Samsonov on November 16, 2017, 08:24:38 PM
I seem to be on a mission to do various games which enraptured me in my youth in a smaller scale. First up, an attempt at a home made 6mm space hulk set. Some board tiles and miniatures.

I'll be following your progress on this with interest.
I loves me a good 6mm project!  ;)

Cool, you might want to mark the squares, cutting the floor sections will do it

Thanks for all the praise. Alas, that space hulk is very much on hold currently. It was much quicker to buy and paint up a nanohulk from honeybee works. Pictures of mine below:

Wow, this one slipped past me! Great looking stuff, you’re scratchbuilt tile looks amazing - but I totally understand your move to the nanohulk set (which looks like a vast setup). The homemade tiles can take forever.

Looking forward to watching this thread grow.

Start of a new army. Some 3mm Novan Elites by Vanguard. Painted up as Sons of Horus, based as a Platoon.

I hadn't seen the Honey Bee stuff before, and now I'm very tempted.

Fortunately there's no point ordering this close to Christmas, so hopefully the temptation will have lessened by the time the new year rolls around. It's not helped by the fact that I have the original epic space marine and genestealer models. Going to be a long few weeks.

As for 3mm, it looks really good, but I struggle to see 6mm these days, not a hope with anything smaller :(

On a slightly different note - do you think the Honey Bee stuff would work with 10mm? I bought some 10mm fantasy stuff earlier this year, but haven't done anything with it. If the HB stuff would work with 10mm and 6mm, it would be an easier purchase to justify :D

Those 3mm chaps look great and I'm really looking forward to seeing more of them. I’m pretty tempted to get some myself but am having trouble visualising how big they actually are, any chance of a picture with a 6mm figure for comparison?

Thanks for all the comments.

The nanohulk is great for 6mm models. I can say it is too large for 15mm models if you are using the grid, in that the base of the 15mm models I have tried is larger than each square (each square being 1cm square). If you ignore the grid then it looks like a cramped corridor for 15mm. However, I own no 10mm models so I cannot easily judge that one. I suspect it would work but that is only a vaguely educated guess.

Will try and get some comparison pictures with 6mm models when I get some more 3mm painted. Each base is 6cm by 4cm, and each individual model is about 4mm tall (being in power armour). I hope to be able to field at least 10 platoons (i.e. individual bases) of infantry, plus an equal amount of transport plus quite a bit of armour, so really the visual appeal is about mass formations rather than individual models.

Very Nice work Samsonov,
But personally going from 15 to 6 & then to 3mm would be suicidal for me.... eyesight wise....
May I ask how you did the cracked ground on the Novans, please?

Keep it

Yes, please. I’d be interested in how you did that, too.

PS:
Great ideas in the thread. I love how well the 3mm Marines work.
Did you know that a lot of the old epic stuff was produced in 3mm because otherwise it would have been too large at that time? I read it in an old White Dwarf, and can very well imagine how good a titan must look next to your company!

The broken earth is games workshop's Agrellan Earth. Put on about between one and two millimetres of the stuff and after an hour it will start to crack.

Yep, the old titans were 3mm scale so already work well.

Oooooooo, looking fabulous! Nice to see some tanks appearing.

I really regret getting rid of my collection of my Titans (mainly through neglect), this the scale they were meant for.

I am tired of the inconsistencies of the GW crackle paint. If you just need a single tub it is great but both the colour and the amount required to get the same size cracks seems to vary. So a new approach. Gone Vallejo paste and decided to go for a desert landscape.

Tthe 6mm gladiators are now 3mm House Paladin and House Malinax Knights (note that the infantry and knights in the last two pictures are only 75% painted, they still need highlights). Also, I have gone for round bases, I think they look nicer than the rectangular ones. I am really happy with the Vallejo paste and think will rebase everything I already done using this approach. Here we have 50mm bases for the full platoon, 40mm for siege armour, whilst the two knights are currently both on 25mm bases but I intend to have them 2 per 50mm base.

Very cool! The round bases look great, as does the new desert basing theme. Nicely arranged figures too.

The gladiators are ideal as knights, something else to add to the wish list!

Very cool - I'm waiting for the 3mm Orks before taking the plunge on those. Yours look great. For what it's worth I find that for small scales dappling that vallejo sand stuff with water helps to 'flatten' it, which is helpful sometimes.

Note that each company is a different shade of the general teal pattern (with the elites being black and red). There is also a GZG 6mm combat walker in their masquerading as a knight.

Very impressive stuff Macunaima. Any chance of a close up on the knight (I am using 6mm Gladiators for them but alternative patterns would be nice). Also, what ruleset are you intending to use? I was going to mod future war commander.

You are definately right about the water. It is a bit of a battle between creating a smooth surface and creating dunes. Adding water helps create smoothness but too much and dunes do not form. I'll try adding more water to flat sections and keep the dunes the same.

OK, here are two Ground Zero walkers next to a Vanguard dreadnought. The Fat Boy walker was modded in an odd way. I cut its right arm off at the elbow, flipped it over, added some plastic tubing and greeblies in order to give it a bigger gun that the Star Trek-like phaser it originally had. I am very happy with result.

Two stands of heavy weapons. After much deliberation I went with 50mm bases despite only having 9 models per base. It allowed them to spread out more lengthwise.

(https://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2018/10/11/976841-.jpg) (https://www.dakkadakka.com/gallery/976841-.html)
A full company except for the command staff and transports. 4 platoons and 1 heavy weapon platoon split across two bases.

(https://images.dakkadakka.com/gallery/2018/10/11/976842-.jpg) (https://www.dakkadakka.com/gallery/976842-.html)
A company of Siege armour, minus the command staff. I am taking Siege armour as having half sized platoons. Also on 50mm to allow them to spread out more.

Your legion looks spectacular! 3mm certainly seems a great scale to do this sort of thing in. If GW would do a 3mm-10mm Epic game again I'd be all over it, it's just far more practical than 28mm for those grand clashes!

One nearly complete 3mm Sons of Horus army.

3 Infantry Companies, each with five platoons (each heavy weapon platoon is split across two bases so each company has six infantry bases) and transport.

1 Heavy Infantry Company with three platoons and transport.

1 incomplete Armour Company with two platoons.

1 incomplete Heavy Armour Company with two platoons plus a command vehicle.

Some command stands.
