Title: Tonkin 1883-85 Next up for Gringo40s
Post by: gringo on November 23, 2017, 01:42:42 PM
Gringo40s will be releasing a Brand New range in 28mm
covering the French conquest of Annam otherwise known
as North Vietnam...work is well underway and will cover
many of the unusual units as well as Black and yellow flag
troops...gunboats,Elephants and loads of equipment..i would
like this to be my signature range so will put all hands to the
pump on this one.......I will be expanding the Opium Wars range
as this range will tie in with the French operations there.

more to follow :o :D :-* o_o 8)

The range I have been waiting for 30 years !!  ;D
Great new, Ged. If you need some informations about organization and uniforms, the Foundry books - Indochina and Rivals of the Raj - are very good. Please avoid some french illustrations as french are often depicted in metropolitan parade dress and vietnamese in fantasy dress  ;)

one of the more exotic factions involved in this
conflict were the "Black Flags aligned with their
Annamese (north Vietnam) allies against the
yellow flags and the multi-national French forces
some of the French equipment was quite "Jules Verne)
in appearance

black flag standard bearer attached...worth doing a
range just for him alone!! :o :-* o_o :D

was fought by the splendid Marine infantry units in almost 100pct

Hi Ged..
i have a few interesting pictorial sources..above all a pair of purposly made colour plates of Black flags with different soldiers,..from a decades ago 's Italian wargame magazine but they are in a PDF file and i'm not able to extract the picts and post here..maybe you can do it..if your remind me your mail adress i can send you the files..
more there are a couple of essential booklets made by someting like "societé des modellistes, maqueties  or figurinistes" with purposly made plates about the force involved...i will try to locate their site/adress
last..i think it would be more easy , as similar topics, to post this very interesting trend on the Colonial section..personally i find it by accident...as "adventures in the Far East" let me think more at Samurais ecc..not a a Colonial conflict...

i'm sure you can use the rifle armed Chineese...the French clashed quite a few time Vs the Imperial Chinese..and the Pavillon Noirs were in fact not simply bandits but proxies of Chinese Gvt..even lead by Chinese generals

but as i'm sure you'll be very disappointed that the Musée Quai Branly do not allow to download those splendid images..you can find some of them here..that i not only downloaded but also printed thanks to my office laser colour printer (i'm Italian  ;)

In my opinion, you can use the officer, standard bearer and soldiers without firearms but not the rest. In 1883, the chinese army had been reformed and most soldiers had modern uniforms and modern rifles - correct ammunitions and training being another problem... :D

Thank you for doing miniatures about it anyway.

If you are looking for period photographs, nothing beats the Hocquard collection, which can be found in several different places on the web :

To the best of my knowledge, no one's ever done tirailleurs algériens in tropical helmets :

there is also another source that should be exhaustive..those uniform booklets published by Club Francais de la Figurine Historique with, as the comment said, plenty of plates...last year i wrote them in order to buy the books (among them, in addition to the ones on Tonkin also some other good titles) but never received any answer...maybe our French friends of this forum if interested in that period/range could try to tackle those probably excellent sources:

http://s510684789.onlinehome.fr/cl/am_cffh/index.php?id_product=12&controller=product

for those able to read French i find this book in 2 parts PDF which tells in details a campaign with some good battle maps:

update................I will releasing a 28mm Wargames model
of the French Gunboat this year........to go with my Tonkin range.
comprising a resin hull with Metal armament for the forward cannon
and the upper turret Hotchkiss ....metal steering wheel and anchor

Crew are being made this splendid vessel..........based on the actual boat "Revolver" her sister ship aptly named "mitrailleuse" they were something of a sensation on Tonken with the Hotchkiss firing one pound high expolsive shells and the armoured plated ,coupled with the Jules Verne style/ancient greek classical look..used  to ram Blackflag junks and
other water impediments .......

The main battle standard of the Black Flag army is actually the Seven star banner(big dipper).

The standard bearer you've attached is shown with a command flag; used to relay military orders from top down under the pain of death.

To Shipka: CFFH = Club Francais de la Figurine Historique - http://cffh.free.fr/index_fr.htm.
I have their "La revolte des Boxers 1900-1901" (The Rise of the Boxers 1900-1901). Three books with a wealth of information (in French of course) and illustrations, mostly b & W but also in colour. Although these I could not find on their website anymore (these were specials from 2004, 2005-4  and 2006-4), I saw LA CAMPAGNE DE CHINE DE 1853-1865 et LA REVOLTE DES TAIPINGS (two books) and  L'ARMEE CHINOISE DES SHANG A 1840 (also two books). Perhaps useful ?

Hello,

I follow this conversation with great interest because I myself have been waiting for this event for 30 years. Fervant admirer of this period, I put this link that you must surely know but in case! ;)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LRq93DJMyVw

It is on the Siege of Tuyen Quang (1885) narrated in great detail by Georges Blond on his book on the Foreign Legion dating from 1964.

Well when the figures will be available I think I would throw myself on for a good acquisition, Ah black flags in 28mm on a table! The dream becomes reality!! :D :D

One more thing, look at this site although originally the name is about the onslaught of Peitang Cathedral during the siege of Beijing, there are plans on the site about the Marine troops and plans to make a gun boat and a boat to accompany them.

yes Ged is one of my favourites..
but indeed , contrary to appearance, is sufficiently realistic..for example the brown clad Marsouins and Tirailleurs annamites are wearing the ugly Kéo which was a Vienamese native type dress quite ugly used as a kind of cheap fatigue dress in alternative to the French uniforms that after some time falled in pieces

Contemporary descriptions would indicate Brown as well as grey(although this may have been faded black), keep in mind around the area dark indigo blue which would have been found, this from a distance could easily be mistaken for black

and if you want to use those nice minis in some historical but manageable tabletop scenarios and want some sources..Gallica on line free book scans is your place...many good texts on Tonkin for the period represented by Gringo minis..and also if French is not your cup of tea..they are quite a few nice sources with TOES and illustrations...among many this one is a very good one...more than 20 ready maps calling for small scenarios and all the Toes with small columns of Légionaires, Marsouins, Tirailleurs Annamites Vs Chineese/Vietnameese bandits...i already downloaded  over 50 titles dealing with French Colonial Wars in Morocco , Africa and Asia..all good sources..but unfortunatly until now i'm only able read them on my notebook...still too heavy for my Tablet...

Uchronia is your friend  ;)

Anyway, without going so far, the french army intervened in indochina in the 1860s. Black Flags figures with firearms can't do for the period as their rifles are too modern but you can easily use Black Flags or Annamese with sword and spears  ;)

They can be used as opponents for the Vietnamese/Black Flags which is what I intend to use them for, as Ged can attest. There were wars between the Siamese and Vietnamese  in the 1830s .you will need the Siamese figs which Steve will have castings of in June.
The Vietnamese were allies of the Lao also, the figure that Ged has just painted is the ideal style to use. I will ask Ged if any muskets can be had.
So too answer in simple words Yes

Nice, would these be suitable adversaries for the Dahomey warriors?

I think the equipment was a little different but unless you are an expert I don't think it would matter.I would use them.As far as uniforms I think from the 1880's until 1900 they were all over the place with a lot of different combinations.I think if you look at pictures from this era of a group of soldiers you see all kinds of variations

thanks Chaps...……..having studied this period for
ages I agree with Marco in his comments. the main
aim for me is to show some variance in uniform types
especially with the officers and of course other ranks

Belgian you could of course use these figures for Dahomey
the main difference being the adoption of the lebel smokeless
rifle in 1886..or later for some units. looking at this at present
the Graz rifle being the main weapon of choice from 1883-85

Once in Tonkin and Formosa , it took little time for new arrivals to realise their official kit did not stand up to the heat or weather ( Carnot) accordingly they adopted locally made kit or swapped kit

Recently i've studied quite in deep this conflict...from a wargame point of view is very playable because :
1) good information also if in French but with many TOEs and maps
2) few troops involved (i m referring above all to French) so with no more than 40 (scaled) casting and maybe few more up to double pavillons noirs you can reconstruct real battles
3) very detailed maps of small battles available
see for example this downloadable French book:
https://archive.org/details/encolonnesouveni00hugu?q=en+colonne+Huguet

Marianas it is indeed a Spar Torpedo..mosr effective if the dteam launch made contasct with the enemey boat!
BTW
the actual crew in the box will be the Captain potrayed and two sailors
on sitting open handed but holding a shovel for the coal and another
with hand on the tiller..again open handed so can be used to hold pole etc

Indochinese Spahis
Short-lived cavalry units designated as "spahis" were raised by the French Colonial Army in Indochina. The first of these was a squadron of spahis recruited from Cochinchina in 1861 and disbanded in 1871. The second was a small detachment of "Spahis Tonkinese" raised in Tonkin in 1883 and disestablished in 1889 for budgetary reasons

glad you  like the figure....ok lets explain the collective name for the Spahi
were  Des Spahis Senegalais a la garde rouge if we take their natural progression
for my Tonkin Campaign these Spahi are Algerians ..so to call them Spahi Algerians would be correct...the Spahi Senegalais depicted above and shown by me in an earlier post are the uniforms worn in Dahomey,,,,much later and worn in that campaign up to 1900..the figures im  doing are correct for Tonkin..more Arabic in style and more useful for many campaigns. the unit is still in being with the appellation "la Garde Rouge..

* TONKIN CHOCOLATE.jpg (72.42 kB, 512x364 - viewed 210 times.)

About the Sergent Bobillo displayed on this chocolate box : Jules Bobillot enlisted in th 4th Engineer rgt in 1883, aged 23. Quickly promoted a Sergeant due to his diploms, he volunteered for the Tonkin campaign in 84. He displayed a great courage during the Tuyen Quang siege, where he was mortally wounded. he died in 1885. He became a national hero for his courage under fire.
The picture on the box display the same pose as a statue of Sgt Bobillo displayed in Paris, but sadly this statue was destroyed by the germans during their occupation of Paris in 1942.
I hope it helps,
Fred

High Ged
This is Philippe... remember me?
Well I have a book that could be an interesting source for you.
Edited by Lavauzelle, you may know that prestigious military history french editor, at the very end of nineteenth century:
by Le Commandant breveté Chabrol du 161e régiment d'infanterie
Opérations militaires au Tonkin
parts include history of the operations between 1885 and 1895, more than 50 very detailed descriptions of "affaires" (skirmishes to battles, some with maps) and finaly an in-depth analysis of the best tactics that should be used (as it is adressed to the Etat Major).
My Jewell of Indo-China!
Cheers
Philippe

Philippe il s’agit d un livre exceptionnel !!!
But the other good news is that you can find and download it free on line thanks to that great archive that is Gallica!..just write the title on the search motor..by the way I posted the very link of that book on a tread just before the beginning of Gringo Tonkin’line..the maps and the detailed battle orders ,many involving just a few troops, are , in practice, some ready made wargame skirmish scenarios...
Thanks to remember us that source Philippe👍🏻

I do not think that you have to belong to what you called an erudite company” to know that a 19c. book called “campagnes au Tonkin” , published by Lavauzelle, scanned, hosted and offered by Gallica thanks to Bibliothèque Nationale de France, has no chance at all to be in English !

What a marvellous range this is!
I was planning a colonial Tonkin project for my not-so-far-away old days of retirement... you must be my nemesis, how come can I resist long enough.
Tough times coming with my lady treasurer. Not to say the sheer amount of lead that stands to be painted.
And what about my saharian project (l'escadron blanc chasing Tuareg or Berabers ) on the shelf... with those nice spahis sénégalais begging to join in!
At least you don't do Italians and Ethiopians... my last pure carnal-free dream... as yet!

Mais non Philippe je suis tout à fait Italien de souche ;) and always happy to correspond with French wargamers about their rich military and colonial history.
Me too i love Tonkin campaigns..i must also admit that my favourite wargame and historical research period is French Colonial..(plus in a minor way British, Italian, Belgian and German ones..) above all Afrique Occidentale et Equatoriale Francaise and Maroc..i've plenty of minis for those fronts...Tonkin range seem very interesting..unfortunatly (for me of course) they are big miniatures if compared with other manufactures..but i'm beginning to think that they can be fielded without problems , once painted, with others...i'm just painting, in that very moment, the mounted Raisuli mini from Gringo..as a Moroccan Pasha for a Colonial historical scenario, gamed with The Sword and The Flame rule systhem special amendments for French Colonial era,  setted Morocco that i would like to game this summer....Tonkin range is very tempting above all for figures like Spahis that can be used in various campaigns also in Africa

Hi Italwars. So I figured right finally! And the jolie nana stuff would have proved it anyway: you ARE Italian! Great.
I have been quite rough not to first respond to your early welcome, but I was  like a child in a toy store really! I didn't figure that this forum could host such rich material, having read earlier mostly commonplace posts from time to time out of it. I finally decided to log in and to my surprise this is much more interesting than expected!
I once owned The sword and the flame, but that went missing with my last address change. To tell you the truth, I am from the old school and probably a little bit snobish about the modern lack of ambition (to my taste) of many young players, or lazziness of old hands... the old dog is me probably. I just get bored with remarks like "do we have to be Harvard graduates to read these rules" or " I don't want to get headaches with simulations!"    That is why I spoke of "erudition", because it compared to the company I used to play with years ago, to whom such level of knowledge was natural (I was learning much with them). But that once again must be the effect of my aging.
TSATF was my first taste of "modern" rules (I mean post-wrg way). I
admit that this was fun. I however am looking for the set "colonial skirmishes" of old, the one that inspired some parts of the famed "skirmish wargaming" book that you must know of. This is my grail.
Gringo miniatures are large indeed but humans are different anyway and I just received Aztecs from both G40 and The Assault group and intend to use them together

Pas de problème mon ami..and welcome on board ;) 8)
we share similar approach to the games...but i think that  "do we have to be Harvard graduates to read these rules ?" its a very fun remark...and could be justified by the fact that is very difficult, at least for me, to find opponents that  know the period and wargame rule in general in this case French Colonial  , that particular campaign and able to read something which is not in Italian..i suppose you can understand what i mean...TSATF is not a absolutly historical but let feel the trhrilling of a colonial moovie..in fact i must admit that i like colonial for the adventurous pulp approach..
"colonial skirmishes" rule set is very detailed, very good almost scientific approach..interesting to read, to study a composition of a small army and to plan a game with it..also to try to do some solo "battle training" on your table with a handful of minis..but , for my past experience if you try to set a skirmish game, even with no more than 20 minis per side , you will not end even for midnight and probably you ìll close the game or try to continue it the day after..so really not practical..by the way i like the skirmish/role playing approach which the periodand  beautuful personalised minis like the ones from Gringo call for that..TSATF could represent an affordable compromise..quite a few of my  European minis have been named, i follow a roster/table and some of them, like for example Lt  Gardel (or Depardieu  ;)) had even so far managed to survive more than one table top  battle
So we can conclude that we are all very lucky that Ged (Gringo), even if being from UK,  has developped a soft spot for French culture and military history and even for the Italian Risorgimento history...probably he has been "corrupted" by latin dishes/kitchen and wines if compared to his country's niceties like red beans at breakfeast and sandwiches with cucumber  ;) ;) ;) (just joking)
PS: Philippe i can help you with the rule systhem you're looking for..i ll write you in case a PM

I did'nt try TMTWBK but i read interesting things about it..my problem are opponent's absence..that  is i have always to look for to find rare  exceptions among "ineducated" average  Italian wargamers (or better say among Italians in general) somebody willing to play that period and with a minimum historical culture different from "ancient romans" and "WW2 Panthers"..believe me  is an almost impossible mission...so i only play with TSTAF possibly with an Italo/French/Pied Noir good friend of mine here in Rome  who love and know French Colonial History and another visiting US friend, a couple of time a year, that knows the period and the rules-sythem.
Of corse i read Escadron Blanc, Sous l'Etendard Vert ( i want to purchase also  Le chef à l'étoile d'argent cause i read that is a based on a true character..a sergeant/brigadier of Méharistes during the Touareg revolt in WW1)...plus a lot of others semi-official histories scanned on line..plus i purchased, before the web advent, quite a few reprints from Lavauzelle and even various big volumes of "Histoire des Armées Francaise d'Outremer" published in 1931 for the Exposition Coloniale..i was really mad in purchasing such antiquarian rare  volumes, even trough ordering them in USA, containing  plenty of battle maps..they cost me a leg and a arm..but anyway..we live only once...
we also had something similar to that sort of literature in Italy...above all dating from the end of the conquest of Lybia 1930-31..published during Fascist Régime..the rivalry with France even as concern Sahara appeared on those books..as concern Hugo Pratt, who i know is well appreciated in France, i really cannot stand his histories and his  lèche cu stance, even during the Seventies he could'ndt refrain to pay homage to the "politically correct"..it is quite difficult, for me , to understand why every Italian character in his histories is represented like a stupid and a coward while the ones  from every other possible  nationalities are not..but i have my thoughts..on the other hand i like his study of uniforms and landscapes...less his drawing trait which is typical of Italian Comics School of that period....if we speak about BD i strongly prefer..in fact i'm true fan of Tintin and , in a lesser way, also of  Alix , Graton's BD, Funcken..in fact i love "ligne claire"'s BDs..ok sorry i realize that maybe i'm going out of topic...By the way in a past post in this same tread , Gringo (Ged) has shown us and offered a very nice Spirou BD/Comics 's cover by Funcken showing the siege of Tuyen Quang with Légionaires and Marsouins that, after a few months, he promptly realised in 3 D !..in my office i used it as a  screen saver  lol

No you are not out of spot at all! Everything is connected!
I understand your point about Pratt, having felt the same impression that he was very much trying to please an american public. And as you mention comic taste, we could talk about that for hours. I was a Penningen student for six months in the late seventies before accepting my lack of talent for comics making... Besides Pratt I may also say that I am a fan of Diabolik  ;D... and of course of the ligne claire.
You would not be interested to sell the colonial skirmish rules by any chance? Probably not I suppose. I have produce myself some kind of personnal rules on a similar basis but with a larger scope going from Ancient to WW1, just as in the book "Skirmish wargaming". The first version goes back to the late seventies and playtest games at my club of the time: Les grandes compagnies de l'est parisien. Jean-Jacques Petit made his set about the Vendée war skirmishes out of this experience. I still worked on some sassanian lists this very afternoon! Finally I go back to them after each infidelity with newer sets!
I now play solitaire, and find myself very much in a close similitude to your situation. I get bored of competition players that you can see so proud of their bellies and T-shirt in Vae Victis pictures. Sainte-Hélène Napoleons I call them.
We used to have the nice company of an italian player, in my circle of 1990s players (not to mention our host Marcello Kramer, a most flashy character who has ancestors in maybe more than five nations, is Italian for the law, and speaks ladino, arabic, hebrew, greek, french of course, english and italian fluently). But the one I mention is Ivo Sferlazzo, a real mad sort of gamer who could write the most detailed rules about almost any period from an Ancient campaign to the glorious days of Regia Marina (guess who was always elite!). These were the days of enormous laughs about crazy points of detail he insisted on putting in effect for our games.

Imperial Chinese Tonkin period Tiger men

You'll pardon my being a french teacher... marine is feminine so you say infanterie de marine, or fulilier marin. Fusilier de marine should be right but is never employed. You can also say marsouin for a fantassin de marine, who is the equivalent of the royal marine.
I'm very much interested by the Tiger men in Tonkin: have you any proof of their presence?

You have now several asian ranges, including your wonderful new Tet Offensive line ! There is also a post on LAF about martial arts miniatures. Now what about having some actual martial artists in your ranges?
They are serious lines, so no fancy Shaolin stuff. Was there any martial artists involved in the fighting on both settings: well possibly for the first and certainly for the second. The southern chinese arts were introduced during late nineteenth century in Indochina, mostly in Tonkin. Vietnamese pretend that modern national arts such as Vôvinam, Vô Vietnam, Viet vô dao and the such are very ancient but there is no proof of that. They were later inspired by actual chinese martial arts introduced in the large han community in Tonkin. The chinese arts were mostly from two breeds, the tiger and the crane traditions, with "schools" from Hongkong (the Hong Jia) or from Fujian (Bai He quan). Lesser important forms like dragon or praying mantis may have also influenced training.
The Manchu, apart from their own wrestling and archery arts, were in the highest military grades trained in Hsing Hi (a martial internal form of boxing). But the Black Flags must have come mostly from southern populations and therefore may have known some form of the crane or tiger fighting ways.
You might find a place for a demonstrating Hong Jia tiger and crane master with maybe a weapon or in a fighting stance, or for a more gracious White Crane specialist. I can help you for the exact positions, as it needs precision. Vignettes would also be a possibility.
As for the Têt, the communists with northern training had no access to the southern arts like viet vo dao, but the North had its own martial art form, vovinam.
The American special forces, and the Koreans, were trained in korean arts: taegwondo for the chock troops, hapgido (precisely, Korean marine commandos and some green berets studied a more complete form named Daegu Hapgiyugwonsul, very very nasty) for infiltration and special undercover operations.
Once again I have information on these arts.
Cheers
Philippe

Also I got a question for any Tonkin campaign fans who might be able to help me.

I'm going to be painting the French artillery piece from this range and am not sure what colors to use? Gun carriages were painted I'm assuming but no idea what color. And the gun itself was bronze or was it painted black?

Appreciate any advice you can give me here, thanks!

I am painting your range's figs currently but have no idea what rules I'm going to use. I am mounting them on circular stands as singles though so that will influence what I decide for rules when I get that far.

I think that the models used in the game were built specifically for it. However, Oshiro Models has a range of Chinese buildings: https://oshiromodels.wixsite.com/oshiromodelswebshop/chinese

Received my book .Very well put together and didn't take very long to send it to me considering that they only print the the book as you order it.My one complaint is that the pages aren't numbered except for a couple which I thought as strange but overall I'm satisfied.

I ordered that book too and really enjoyed it. Much of it is not about the 1880s Tonkin but WW2 however still very interesting. The Tonkin part has some nice detail on various battles though.

And yeah, I thought it weird that the pages were not numbered either. Don't think I've ever seen a book like that before  o_o

Hi Ged

Any progress on a “Wargamers Guide to...” for Tonkin? The lack of any comprehensive English language information on the campaign, actions and uniforms etc is the one thing holding me back.

I’m sure we’ll all have our preferences for rules for the period, but this would really help the range fly.

The Perry’s have published similar (but solely historical rather than gaming focused) for their Carlist, Cape Wars and Sudan ranges. Combine the detail of “Go Strong into the Desert” with 10-12 scenarios for Tonkin and I’m sure you’d be into a winner.

It is a little frustrating, however popular the modern Vietnam era may be, that the Tonkin range has come to a lengthy halt.
It all began so well.

It is a bit frustrating that Gringos has so many incomplete ranges (especially as there are so many I’d love to start collecting) particularly when they’re for such specific periods it’s difficult to complete from other manufacturers without compromising on quality.

I’m one of the worst when it comes to being too easily distracted by new shiny things but a bit of self-discipline is sometimes needed, especially as a manufacturer.

i can fully understand Gringo....Firstly Gringo 40 is a very innovative approach to wargame minis in that scale ..they are in fact not only wargame pieces but they are also very nice as component of diorama or vignette..the majority of subjects until now produced  can be seen from the uncommon detail and choice of subject, pose even personality among same subject, as  some sort of stand alone wargame figure range ...already  perfect to complete your existing armies...i own a big Neapolitan Army of 1860 from other ranges but i could'nt resist to buy some very few pieces from Gringo and, despite their big size, they are very iconic and completed brillantly my already existing Mirliton army...the same could be said, probably, for other ranges...Tonkin and Mexico among my favourites....consider also that it is, as i suppose, a small manufacture and a work of love...otherwise the man behind Gringo, would have choosed to produce, instead of Risorgimento, Tonkin and Mexico, some other tons of WW2 Germans, Ancient Romans or other subjects with much appeal to the masses but less for demanding and sophisticated guys like we are in this forum section ;)....so maybe we have to understand better, and i did from personal past experience as a producer of wargame minis (ITALWARS), the stance of Gringo...in oder to  invest in new subjects if you have to sell, before that, very very well and big quantities of the already produced casting's subjects..simplest microeconomics approach....for what i perceive Gringo is already doing, risking and offering a lot to us wargamers

I understand that it isn't cheap to produce figures. I've  had a few sculpted and that alone isn't cheap so I can imagine what a whole range going through all the processes must cost. But understanding all that I thought Ged was very happy with the Tonkin range and that it was doing well with it.When he started the modern range I thought he was going to do both and to just stop completely on it came as a complete surprise.

Italwars makes some good points but I’m much less likely to support a project from its outset unless I’m reasonably confident I’ll be able to get the core troop types (with officers etc) over 2-3 years, while I’m still enthusiastic about it.

That’s even more important if it’s a niche subject which no other manufacturer makes , BUT this also means that every gamer genuinely interested in the period will support it properly, just than just buying odd ‘nice’ pieces to add to an existing collection. Tonkin certainly fits into that category and Maximilian probably so.

Best example I can give of a new range launched properly is Iron Duke’s Indian Mutiny Range - great sculpts, well researched, multiple poses for all the core troops types with appropriate unit and higher command figures, lots of relevant historical information on the website and other social media and, most important of all, detailed info on planned future releases to a schedule that has been adhered to. With 24-36 figures in each infantry unit, I hesitate to calculate how much I’ve spent on that collection in the last few years.

Having spoken to Ged, I know he will be adding to the Tonkin Range, especially with Chinese/Vietnamese regulars, also expanding the Legionaries.
It is a range he consistently sells

I have currently got my Black Flag Army painted, my French is almost there, and I am painting some of the Black Flags as Chinese Boxers.

thanks for all the comments chap.....one has to consider
the multiple aspects of producing figures..for example my
Tonkin Game at Salute the other year as an exercise in passion
required major imput .and as a one man band im fortunate in being
able to pick and choose whatever I want to do wargame wise...but I will
add to Tonkin when im able... :D :D :D :D :D as for the book its one of four!
I have "stuff" in the wings ….all will be revealed!
