Title: British Airborne - 28mm
Post by: fred on December 02, 2017, 10:55:40 PM
Something a bit different from my normal 10mm figures - 28mm plastic Warlord British Airborne. I'm building up a platoon plus support elements, initially for Bolt Action as that is what the group want to play, but hopefully for some Chain of Command too.

Soo far built up one and a bit sections, along with an observer / officer and a PIAT.  I have gone quite Sten heavy on the second section.

The raw figures, built this week:

And after getting them sprayed and initial painting done today:

Main colours blocked in, green camo done on all, and brown on about half. Next step is a good strong wash to tone down the smocks (they aren't as bright in real life), then on with flesh and webbing.

I'm quite surprised, and pleased, at how quickly these have come on. I was expecting them to be rather slow to paint.

Thanks chaps.

They are easy to build, as most of the arms come ready attached to the weapons, and the small kit (water bottle, entrenching tool, pouch and bayonet) are all in one piece.  The downside of the arms being on the weapon is that its hard to repose the figures.

One thing I did find with basing on coins, is that lots of the running poses are quite hard to attach with superglue, so I cut small pieces of plastic card to glue the figure's foot to (with polystyrene cement) then superglued this to the coin. This was much easier (and I think probably a stronger bond too).

Colours, all Vallejo:
Trousers - english uniform
Smocks - game colour desert yellow base, flat earth and olive green with a drop of military green
Helmets and other metal work - olive green with a drop of military green

I'm kind of following the painting video on the Warlord site.

As with all gamers, I've already done this in another scale - http://www.kerynne.com/games/BritishParas.html

Does anyone have any photos of Warlord paras against 1st Corps or Crusader? Or know how these ranges match (or not!) again each other?

Hi Fred,

I can help a little here, The newer 1st corps Airborne fit nicely between both.
All the jeeps are correct and loaded correctly. The howitzer is on the correct carriage,The airborne carriage Not the air portable carriage others have mistakenly used. The 6pndr is beefer than the warlord one (personally I feel the warlord one is more like a 2 pndr in diameter.) but a similar size.(can post image tomorrow on 6 pndr as I've both undercoated.) the helmets on some of the earlier 1st corps airborne, are a little oversized which is a styling rather than a sculpting choice, As the range has a fan base that's been running for over twenty years. So the newer figures are sculpted to bridge older collections, and to compliment more modern tastes, and manufactures
That said all the drop markers ,parachutes and drop canisters, ammo dumps etc will work nicely with crusaders or warlord figures.

The jeeps ,ordinance, and support weapon systems crews will easily take head swaps from both Crusaders and Warlord. The infantry will take crusaders heads quiet well . Where as the warlord metal heads can be quiet small(no idea when it comes to the plastics, Not been commissioned to paint any.)

Mark.

Thanks Mark, that is helpful, the various accessories for 1st Corps look good, and that is a useful pointer about the Jeeps, I'd missed those when I looked earlier on my phone.

It is particularly the size of the 1st Corp infantry against the Warlord plastics that interests me most, so if anyone else has both, it would be good to hear.

Got some more done on these chaps tonight. Strong Tone wash across the bodies and legs - you can really see the impact of this, as the centre chap hasn't been washed yet.

Then boots & weapons with black,
Woodwork in a mix of Light Brown and Beasty Brown (also used this to add some highlights to the smocks),
flesh base coat,
and on the right hand four webbing done in Russian Uniform.

Next step is the webbing on the rest of these guys, then hair, which should put paint on everything. Then washes and highlights on all the small bits. Then back to the other six to finish their smocks and webbing.

Did you prime or undercoat the figures?

From the pictures it looks like you have painted directly onto the plastic.
Title: Re: British Airborne - 28mm
Post by: fred on December 04, 2017, 12:38:58 PM
I can see why you might think that, Mick. I sprayed them with grey primer, which was pretty much the same shade of grey as the plastic. So I certainly attempted to prime them but quite probably missed bits as I couldn’t see what might have been missed.

OK, thanks.

I was curious because, when I have written painting guides, I have always emphasised that a primer / undercoat is needed.

Absolutely- the plastic is quite shiny it looks like acrylic paint would just slide off.

I've found a nice contrast with British Airborne is to do the webbing green. The Sten pouches and rifle slings were rarely blancoed green, leaving them lighter... kind of makes 'em more interesting. Doing the cotton .303 bandoleers light tan helps too.

As they say, timing is everything.

I've just painted and highlighted all the webbing green. Might try the khaki on some of the others, as you say it will give a good contrast.

Washed the webbing with Military Shader, and highlighted with Russian Green with a drop of Green Grey.
Helmets and other green metal washed with Military Shader.
Skin, washed with Flesh Wash, and highlighted with Flat Flesh.
Painted toggled ropes khaki, and used this to highlight the scrim on the helmets.

Yes, they are undercoated in grey. I think also because I painted the bases brown quite early on it, they have the look of un-painted coins too. So its a double optical illusion  o_o o_o

6pdr anti-tank gun

This arrived today, and I built it this evening.

(https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/qqxKa7zyU7HcZM0U2pF-I_QuNMwxE478gHwz6jRIhkOf9e3xr49JVe8lzvz5Su3ohl1YjbeZfLyBuD7KtbNX8hzTx5mLV8xGB3tvqFYXnKYF9WDt_jRkmfiXAUFOm7aAzba3ffYdYO9eERIbz_BhuvDuwQtxDD5jLtv9sFEa791fmR6F4mVw9xMmUSaPYVplY85iAo3ScpwbdtLBulWT5vnRcViGQzFI43K3QKEk0d85uOctehLc2YVuPE-eFtAqfRyihzyibANIBWIjhE2ZAS1Z2EF-OC-vPo_ykYivqKvU2N7VDaZuNoLJmrxcP4v0BkA-pVegZtNtJBeRu_pJu4EBq-BEC-P4_ZVQF55Sb2GlTxelVXAjhw24PT7wtTvTw75f37nVfFHcmJ7eEldQ_gOqEwbLqIN1z6oykyRkG_ymae-QxP9_ZoWW_ugbfVCy25FjuCQfK3PAOnv4Jy1UK52wliLcofXTFMBOtKCaGH75BZqN7L6vJH6q6hPYbvTupj-pHVrOUgBIlofcvi_fbTF530bxoPF-YjHdPfG1Qqye6EejKMRg-RHQx5rZKB8HGrc0tvdaGhsMixCbgKfbmKbDN8Df6mrYOOYERrurusLzYB7FdpUH0LYQWnzgr633QXV5G0l5XLWg13mEle8h56FtT6gMClofGgIx=w1323-h908-no)

It was quite a fiddly build - as are most white metal guns. The two parts that caused me the most confusion, where the sight and the 'shield' of the breach block. At first I thought they were part of the towing mechanism - but some googling showed me that they couldn't be that. Then it kind of twigged.

I wondering what to do base wise. I don't really want a big base, but something around the wheels feels useful?
Title: Re: British Airborne - 28mm
Post by: Ultravanillasmurf on December 06, 2017, 09:25:05 AM
Nice, as you say a fiddly build.

Lack of instructions does not help.

I would put it on a base that offers some protection to the barrel and trails.

The guy nearest the gun will get a face full of breechblock when it fires.

I would suggest the gunner be placed to the left of the breech on the gun's base rather than on a separate base as close to the shield as possible. The rest of the crew on separate bases (you might want to have spaces on the gun's base to place the rest of the crews bases).

I see what you mean, it is a hybrid. The fixed part of the shield is wrong, but it has the right trails.

I simply can't find the warlord 6pndr for comparison. I'll keep looking (because its in there some where)
Mean while here's a couple of pictures of mine (and a basic recce jeep.)

Title: Re: British Airborne - 28mm
Post by: fred on December 06, 2017, 07:58:50 PM
Thanks chaps - the warlord one does seem to be a bit of a hybrid.

The trails and lower armour plate look right for an airborne gun. I think I should have pushed the wheels right up along the axels to keep the gun as narrow as possible.

But the main shield isn't. It is certainly too wide, and has the wavy top. What I can't tell is if the height of the shield is right or wrong. Looking at the two sets of instructions it seems to be the same shield on both guns - which is wrong. But looking at the valiant instructions for converting their standard gun to the airborne one, it looks like this shield looks like it is the right sort of height for the airborne one, which is odd.

Mark - is 'yours' the one sold by 1st Corps? It certainly looks good. I got the boxed set from Warlord, so got the gun, a 3" mortar and Vickers along with the infantry for a good price! Which is good as this is really a side project.

 Fred,

My bad I didn't think to mention it is my mine ,I sculpted all the airborne ordinance, heavy weapons, and jeeps. In the 1st corps range.

The airborne 6 pndr should have a reduced gun shield ,it should also have a second 'L' shaped cut /step on either side of the gun shield . As the wheel axle was shortened to fit in a glider.
The lower shield has an additional towing eye. The muzzle break is the reduced weight bottle break copied directly from the German muzzle breaks .

Mine is looking a little grubby as it spends its life glued to my workshop wall.

Mark.

Ta, yes I thought by 'mine' you did mean one you had sculpted, I just wasn't sure who for.

Now you mention the other differences they are pretty obvious! I might have a go at filling the muzzle break, and should be able to create a front tow hook. Not sure there is much I can do with the shield now its in place.

Progress was somewhat slowed on these by a mixture of Christmas  :D and post Christmas illness  :(

But I made good progress on the next batch of 10 over the weekend, these figures fill out the 2nd section, and give me the first 2 support weapons (Vickers and 6pdr)

I also did a bit of shopping and added some jeeps and another section from 1st Corps

The 1st Corps figures are a bit bigger than the Warlord plastics, but nothing significant. If anything it is the Warlord metals that are rather small against the Warlord plastics.

I was asked in a PM about the different hands and arms options I used. I thought the answer would be helped with a photo, and that other people might (!) be interested.

The majority of the arms on the British Airborne sprue come in pairs joined with a weapon, this makes it nice and easy for assembly, and this is the option I went with in most cases. There are just about enough body and arm options that you can make different pairings of bodies and arms with all the models in the kit.

These seven are the main ones I applied some customisation to - I haven't got to the stage of hacking apart figures to try to get different poses - I struggle to hold all the body, the 2 arms and the weapon together to get a fit again, so I generally go fairly small scale. One thing I did do with a number of the weapons is trim off the bayonet. This is very easy to do - much easier than trying to add bayonets.

From left to right:
*kneeling, LHS, Bren No2. Bren magazine trimmed from Bren Gun and added to open left hand.
*standing, LHS, running with sten. Trimmed the magazine from the Sten (this one is just moulded with the right hand). Left arm, cut off hand, and added hand with Sten magainze
*kneeling, centre left, Forward Observer, removed weapon from arm, to give an open right hand (this will get a map), removed strap from field glasses.
*standing centre, running officer right arm removed hand and weapon from forearm, added pistol hand.
*kneeling centre right, officer or observer, right hand as above to add pistol
*standing right, running rifleman, right hand with Sten removed, left hand is carrying sniper rifle, but with scope and extra stock plates removed (I've used this arm several times, but never as a sniper rifle)
*kneeling with bren, Bren arm partially cut at elbow to angle across body, I think the right arm was the one for the running rifle pose, with an open hand rotated 90º

Even though I only made these in the last month, its already hard to remember the mix of parts used!

I've mainly gone rifle armed for my sections, 1 bren, 2 steps and 7 rifles generally. And for this found that there aren't loads of rifle arms provided in the set - there are enough but only just enough to avoid duplicates. For one section I went quite Sten heavy, as especially at Arnhem/Osterbeek there are photos of groups of Paras predominately armed with Stens, and bolt action certainly allows this.

Standing - 2 Riflemen to add to weapons teams, sniper, 3"mortar, flame thrower, platoon sergeant
Kneeling - Medic, observer or officer, mortar crewman, 2" mortar team, another mortar crewman
Prone sniper

The desert yellow of the smocks looks very vibrant over the very pale grey undercoat, before its washed!

One question - the standing sniper has some kind of hood on his back, would this be part of the Denison Smock so camouflage, or its a bit of sniper kit in some other colour scheme?

It's a shawl these are made by the individual soldier. They cover the majority of the back ,head, and upper arms. It's a compromise as ghillie suit is bloody heavy and bulky.

The picture you've got ,Has scrim scarves wrapped all over the place . No.....
Now I've re written this as it turned into a khaki rant(quite surprised myself actually.didn't realise I still had that nerve.)
All I'll say is its over balanced and just does nothing to reduce your silhouette.Otherwise I run the risk of a got the t shirt rant.

Thanks chaps

Mark - it’s not the probe prone sniper I was referring to, it’s the standing one.

I’ll go with some kind of scrim hood, as far as painting goes it’s whether it’s a green base with brown, or a sand base with green and brown.

edit for spelling

That one has a hood.
Similar thing .Smocks did have hoods (not all variants) But again a similar situation they're adapted by the individual or 'In house tailoring ' some have 3/4 zips some full length. Some four pockets, some two,or added or taken away.
In short were a law unto ourselves kit is never issue its alway adapted and continues to do so.So no one can tell you your wrong. Because kit can change by the hour and the weather.
British reconnaissance troops were fond of  Zeltbahns, splinter pattern, and tan and water. To the point orders were issued (and to some extent ignored ) banning its use.

Thanks Mark - I thought it looked like a hood, but hadn't seen hoods on photos. And I certainly hadn't thought about customisation, which is kind of obvious when you think of it, and probably even more so for snipers.

Some Airborne snipers cut up a spare smock and made the entire right side of their Denison into one big pocket/pouch to hold all their kit. No hard and fast rules on this one!

Looks like these chaps might get their first outing on Friday night (even if the force is only part finished)

So in preparation, I have given the fully painted ones a coat of gloss varnish (Vallejo Polyurethane Gloss, brushed on), then added rank decals and parachute wing decals, another coat of gloss. Then finally today a coat of matt varnish.

In the photo the ones on the right are still waiting for their coat of matt varnish

I've gone with several coats of varnish on these, as I think they will be getting a lot of handling as skirmish figures. Also gone with brush on due to the weather, and probably as its overall quicker to do than spraying.

Been a bit of a hiatus on these figures, probably not least to having  an initial game of Bolt Action that was just hard work.

But took them away with me this week and made good progress on the final two sections, here are the two base colours done:

Over the last couple of days I've got the last few colours on, and various bits of highlighting added  o_o

So this is the last of the troops painted  :D :D There are two sections here along with various support options.

Final job on these chaps is some varnishing.

Next up are two jeeps (now built) along with their crews, a 6pdr to paint, and finally a Sherman to build and paint.

Lovely work Fred. The paras have come up a treat. The jeeps will look great beside the paras.

All the best.

Are you looking at some bikes in addition to the jeeps for transport?

I wasn’t thinking of getting the welbikes- I’m no great fan of the figures, and I’m not sure they were used that much.

I was thinking of using hte jeeps for MG armed recce as much as for transport.

Decaled up the paras this evening, didn't quite have enough wings for all of them, but good luck spotting which ones don't have them  ;)

The lack of flat surfaces wasn't a big problem at all, the arms are gently enough curved that putting the wings on the shoulder area is fine. On the odd sergeant's stripes I used a bit of Micro Sol to soften the decal so it would mould into shape. This went doubly so for the medic's armband.

Super close up shot so that you have half a chance of seeing the wings!

Give them another coat of gloss tomorrow. Then think about basing. Then just a final matt coat of varnish.

As can be seen, lots of basing still to do.

Ta, I'm pleased with adding the decals, even if seeing them during a game is fairly unlikely, but they add that nice level of detail to the figures, and didn't take that long to do.

The Warbases pdf storage base works really well. I've been using to store the figures between stages of painting, as it is so good for keeping them organised, and stopping them bashing into each other.

I was expecting the base to fit the Really Useful box exactly, but its actually a fair bit smaller. But I secured it with some double sided sticky tape. The figures fit well in the holes, and when based  up with sand then they seem to fit very snugly.
