Title: Olsson's Fantasy Miniatures
Post by: Olsson on December 12, 2017, 11:43:18 AM
So figure I'll toss up some of my less than spectacular works here. I currently do not play anything actively so will just be whatever I fancy painting at the time.

So to start with, a Mordheim warband I've made currently just lacking the Captain.

Jacquot and Poton served as men-at-arms in the host gathered by a Brettonian Count up into the Grey Mountains to follow a band of greenskins who had been pillaging through the countryside. It was pure luck that saw them survive together with a score of other peasants when the charge of the knights failed. The years that followed have been harsh, but as they've travelled across the Empire selling their skill at arms, such as it is, a new world has opened up for them. Despite the horrors that lurk across the land they view this new existence as one of freedom and beyond any other in the band have a tendency towards debauchery and spending their pay much too quick.

Karl and Willhelm are cousins from the same village outside of Kemperbad. Growing up together they were always rough boys, tall and strong for their age and beyond anything else competitive. There was no chore or task that couldn't be turned into a game of winners and losers, and it was this escelation of daring boasts which eventually lead both of them to leave their home newly signed to a mercenary company. That was some years ago now, and that company is since long buried somewhere across the border to Sylvania. Serving as the right and left hand of Captain Erwing, and to this day not an hour passes without one seeking to outdo the other.

Father and son, Albert and Oskar were once in the service of Count Hertwig of Ostermark. With the monicker of Huntmaster, Albert found an easy living at the summer estate of the good count. Only demanded to bring in game during the months when his lord was present. Brought up as a hunter it was not too hard a task, and a calling to which he brought up his son Oskar. An existance which was brought to a sudden end when Oskar was caught in bed with a lady of fine lineage during a summer visit and the boy and father both were chased away at the tip of swords. They spent a few years on the road, and at a drunken hour they may even admit to a few instances of banditry before they fell in with Captain Erwing. Albert misses the comforts of old while Oskar has taken a liking to the new free life.

Werner and Max were two urchins the band came across in the ruins of Mordheim, one among dozens they had to fend off while walking the streets which the people deemed "safe" in that terrible hive. It was to the surprise of all that Erwing fed the boys and took them in, and even more when he asked Albert to show them how to use a bow. Ratty and thin creatures Erwing uses them to deliver word to other bands across the city, and to climb down those tight tunnels a proper man could never reach. So far Werner's only lost three toes to the ratmen.

Tjenare, Olsson! Var har du hittat ett gäng att spela Mordheim med?

Tjenare! Är nere i Jönköping och jag spelar knappt, har några vänner jag har fått att testa med mig.

Captain Erwing Himmel is among the mercenary circles famous for having served in Wolfram's Guard as a Greatsword beneath the Count of Ostermark prior to the fall of Mordheim. His reasons for leaving the Count's service are unknown, but the popular story that he's simply an oppertunist that deserted to seek the riches promised in the damned city after its destruction. A military man to the bone it did not take long for him to join one of the many armed gangs going around the city, and even less before he kicked the drunk who called himself their captain to the curb.

Been playing around with the idea of making two Age of Sigmar based warbands. In essence one would be a band of aelf wanderers who are sworn to a sacred grove hidden away at the peak of a snow-tipped mountain in Ghur, the realm of beasts and monsters. There lies their god, a slumbering deity over which they stand sentry and are sworn to serve. But below on the slope of the mountain savage tribes of men carve out their living amidst the snow, clad in furs and wielding wicked steel they are lead by their shamans, whose visions speaks of the god of the mountain, The Lightning Lord, the Thunder Drake who awaits their arrival and shall bless them, to master this harsh mountain and lord over their enemies.

In essence the thought is to make one force of wood elves/wanderers and another of chaos marauders who are fighting on the snowy slopes trying to awaken and protect their respective deity while also carving out a life in the harsh realm of Ghur.

So far I've started kitbashing together a count-as Waystrider who will lead the aelfs. The end result is a bit roguh, and frail as hell but I am largely happy with it having never done much of a conversation before.

Mostly a mix of the Glade Guard and Wild Riders/Sisters of the Thorn kits.

The old mercanies have aged well imo. Still have my human warband in the cupboard. I like the names and the characters. Mordheim is such a good setting for creating personalised blokies.

Har varit på GoB några gånger genom åren.

Did a basic test miniature for the elves to find a good colorscheme for the mountain/winter elves. Picking the colours has never been my strong suit, but this is it so far with just the base colors on.

Finding it a bit too warm with the leather maybe, contemplated putting in some actual white in there. Either switching the cloak to white, or switch the brown to green and fill in the green with white? Of course there is always the argument that some contrast is good. Might also switch the bronze out to silver.

My attempts at the elves continue, slapped together another one even as I continue to try and figure out a good colour scheme. Also made another version of the Champion Willhelm in the Mordheim Company for when he might get himself some heavy armour which turned out alright and to cleanse my palette I slapped some paint on a Chaos Warrior and a skeleton and tried out the Citadel basing texture paints which I am not overly thrilled about, although the painting itself went alright.

Started working a bit on a second Mordheim warband as my friend who I am planning on playing with is also going Mercenary. Looking at my bitzbox I figured Possessed to be one of the more fun, chaos in Warhammer always lends itself well to conversions and all manner of odd things. Tossed together three miniatures today as I found the time to hobby some with a friend, and broke out the greenstuff for the first time ever to give it a go. Turned out a bit messy and basic, luckily mutants needn't always look so clean and proportional.

So started with this one, took a zombie head and filed off the worst of the open wound in the forehead bit. Painted up as a living person I am hoping it will be able to pass as a crazed filthy madman rather than the walking dead. Mostly a mix between the Games Workshop Free Company and Zombies kit. Hoping to make a few more but not entierly sure where to look for some more variations in bodies for the common man sort of infantry.

And what would a Possessed warband be without the titular possessed? Dug out some old ork pieces I had around as I feel those lend themselves well to a brute body that needs to support some quite strange things. Similary the bovine skull at the top of the Ork banner I had I felt could look quite as a literal head, added that on there with a bunch of greenstuff followed by a claw arm from the Possessed back from Warhammer 40.000. The spikes at the back I filed down from the Blood Throne kit and tries to add on with greenstuff to look like unnatural growths before I gave a go at making a basic tentacle, which after the second one also had one I tried to make different by adding on a spike at the end.

The second one is simpler, with the same orc body base and a leftover Daemon Prince head and a Bloodletter arm together with another tentacle. Might be this one needs some more stuff to make it look busy and distract from the orkyness of it. The greenstuff ended up far from perfect but for now I feel it serves its purpose. Was quite fun to try and do some more crazy miniatures.

The painting continues, me and a friend are still working at getting enough stuff to actually play Mordheim although he keeps being behind me with the putting colours on miniatures part. It was pointed out to me that my two henchmen didn't have identical equipment so needed another fellow with a sword. And the next issue was that the Brettonia Men-At-Arms box only comes with one sword as they're all using halberds as a base. A small conversion followed of fixing a Free Company arm to fit into the Man-At-Arms socket.

Keeping a pretty decent pace of painting so far into 2018.

Put some paint on the wood elf above, still trying to figure out a good paintscheme for the snow elf idea I have. The brown still seems a bit warm, although I tried mixing gray into what I had.

Nice to see Mordheim still inspiring people! It's a good game setting, and your minis fit perfectly.

I think the WElf paint scheme works as a base. You could then go little by little towards lighter hues by carefully layering. I can see one or two layers/highlights on some of your Mercenaries, and that's The way to go. Slower wok but looking nicer.

I am trying to get better at the highlighting, yeah. Just a pain to go back and forth, I actually tried to do some on the elf but I put on the wash after which seems to make a lot of it go away. Perhaps I ought to highligh post wash. Painted another elf today, did what I mentioned and made the loincloth match the gloves/boots which I think breaks the colours up better.

Base feels a bit bare, but gonna try and pick up some mordheim tuft grass to put on to add some dead grass to add to the wintery atmosphere.

Definetly an improvement!

I always highlight after wash. Actually, I only wash the basecoat, and then start doing the layers, starting with the colour that I used for the basecoat. Slow, but controlled.

Thanks, it does do quite a bit and I am enjoying painting the fantasy miniatures.

Been out of black spray for awhile so stuck painting what I had primed, and thus went back to add to my Mordheim gang. So I've tossed together a version of my Champion Willhelm which can be seen earlier, for when he adopts proper heavy armour and uniform in the future. This one came together right easy and I feel fairly happy with it.

Dug out some Citadel LOTR miniatures from a decade ago as I've gotten into Tolkien's works again recently. First up working on some Nazgul, although I seem to have lost 3 out of the 9. Need to spice up the baze a bit but do not have any suitable tufts currently.

Found and purchased Joseph A. McCullough's Rangers of the Shadow Deep recently and it so far it has kept me inspired and working on my miniatures at a, for me, rapid speed oncemore. It's coop nature and setting is quite appealing to me who have always wanted my miniature wargames to be quite close to a roleplaying session. Here are a number of the miniatures I have put together so far preparing to try and convince my local buddies to play it with me.

I really like the rock golems, is there a nuance to the smooshing of the cork or is it just little by little till you are happy, and did you use cork tiles or cork bark?
Title: Re: Olsson's Fantasy Miniatures
Post by: Olsson on March 04, 2019, 09:01:28 PM
For these ones I am actually breaking off pieces from one of those cork lumps you wrap the sandpaper around to get a proper grip. Not sure of the exact terminology in english but it allows for bigger chunks. There is no particular nuance beyond working on the smooth areas, either by stabbing it a few times to create irregularities or by using that side to glue two oieces together. In general I went for each foot being one piece, then the leg one piece, torso can be one or two glues together and each arm is two segments, generally arm and then "hand." I use spackle at the joints to strengthen the build as it is very fragile otherwise and comes off as suitably rocky.

And here are my latest addition to my collection of fantasy creatures.

My work into Rangers of the Shadow Deep continues.

Two old GW Brettonia archers that will work as my Archer companions. So far I am painting them all up in the green colours of Alladore. So far I am trying to avoid buying new miniatures, atleast til I get paid at the end of the month and the Brettonia line fits best with the more early-ish mediveal fantasy aesthetic that I am trying to go with.

My ranger in the flesh. He is a A Song of Ice and Fire miniature from the Crannogman Trackers line. They really make for excellent rangers in the classic aesthetic ala Dunedain/Rangers of the North. He is a quick and cunning fellow so I have gone with abilities based around speed and deception, we'll see how well that goes for me once I venture into the Shadow Deep for real.

Some great figures and markers you have there - great work!

As I didn't get any of the Warhammer Bretonnian stuff from that era I don't know how big they are. Could you tell me how tall the miniatures are in mm, and/or do some comparison shots with the Radagast mini (as I have one of those) that is in the background please? I like the look of that Crannogman "ranger" and would dearly like to fit him into my collection but not if he is too big - most of my collection are old school/pre-slotta Citadel and GW Lord of the Rings, so tend towards 25mm.

Been working on some Victrix Vikings to use for various purposes, the plan is eventually to make a 9th Age Åsklanders army of it but painting so many miniatures is always aways away. Been looking at Saga however where they should function just fine, so began with putting together 16 unarmoured men with shields. As far as I've gathered they should do fine as two squads of Warriors in Saga.

Didn't paint all that much for a good while, it's always a treat to get going at it again even if I am not spending as much time as I perhaps ought to due to the numbers of them I'll need to have. Entertaining some fantastical notions of going over them again sometime in the future. The shields are currently blank as I am considering trying those lovely shield decals Victrix also sells, even if they're all out of stock currently.

My adventures in cork construction continues. I put this cairn golem together a few weeks ago but didn't end up wholly pleased with the silhouette and pose. It was put to the side as such things often are, but after having made a quick and smaller one in an evening I decided to paint it up. Are few things as despiriting as having a bunch of unfinished things lying around looking messy.

In the end I am happy enough with it.

As mentioned above I've also continued my work on the vikings. The 9th Age goal is still very distant as those armies would need me to paint up about a hundred vikings, but I have a full 6 point Saga army now and have played two games. It's a fun one.

My mighty viking warlord.

After another hiatus from the hobby, I have returned by one road or another to the world of miniature painting and gaming in time for another summer to reach its end. The return of the Horus Heresy gained some of my attention, but a friend and I recently came to play our second game of Saga after I near a year of putting it off for this and that reason.

Oncemore the Saxons were to defend against the menance of the vikings, this time in a game which had us control objectives which were worth varies points decided and concealed by the opponent. But I will be honest and say we both promptly forgot which objective we had given which values and it became more of a learning game as we charged into each other's shieldwalls. I was quite happy with how much I had retained of the rules, and a good time was had all around.

The vikings were soundly beaten, a truly fateful clash in the middle as my force of 8 Hearthguard charged 10 warriors, and slew two while losing six of their own. The dice were not with me in that skirmish. And in the wake of that, all things fell apart. But quite telling for the game was the fact I had a great time despite this rebuttal of my viking horde.

A few photos of that clash here.

Beyond this I recently also invested in a lightbox for my miniature photography, my understanding of cameras remains at the level of a neanderthal but the lesson that good light is key has managed to worm its way into my head. Today I played around with it for a bit and while I am sure the mysteries of camera settings will continue to elude me for awhile, I do think it made for some good photograhs. My Fellowship (which has wallowed with a half painted Boromir for two years now I am shameful to admit) were first to get the new treatment.

Then a go at my most recent painted fantastical miniature, both moody and shadowy and something more clear which is quite revealing! In both the good and the bad.

Next in line for me shall be another force for Saga, this time Ango-Danes. But with another eye on the horizon for a more fantastical host.

Hey mate, I had no idea you had a bigger battles thread! This is awesome work. The new lightbox will show off your minis to great effect, you've got the perfect grimdark style for it.

Really nice to see you enjoying Saga as well. Vikings vs Anglo-Saxons is a pretty tough matchup for the Vikings, so props for giving the Saxon player a good fight. You'll definitely find Anglo-Danes have more tricks up their sleeves ("Intimidation" is particularly fun).

Keen to see more of your forays into bigger battles. Keep the pics coming, they're always an inspiration!

I got my Ango-Danes from Victrix today, together with the shield transfers so that project is a-go!

Thanks Tyr, you're always too kind.

I do suspect I will find great pleasure in using Intimidation, the Fatigue manipulation was a big part of me choosing them.

A few close ups of some Vikings today as I took a few home with me from the local gaming club when I fetched back my hobby box.

The force was initially intended to be played in 9th Age as an army of Åsklanders. But any force where each unit need be +30 men strong I have come to suspect is one that is beyond me, but that is why they are based up on square bases. Something I have come to regret a bit now (a feeling I know that you are familiar with Tyr!) which was also part of my reasoning to start a second force.

I am pretty happy with the basing on my vikings, and I am contemplating simply keeping that same scheme now. But for a more fantastical force in the future, I know I will be wanting a dark forest theme for the base so I may see this as a trial run to that effect. I have never been one that spends much time on basing, so that shall be an adventure in of itself. If anyone has any tips or tricks for a sort of dark germanic forest base I am all ears to hear it.

Another battle between Viking and Saxon upon the British Isles, and as has become tradition in games of Saga here the vikings were vanquished by the fierce Saxons. Only two norse men were alive by the end of it all. A dark day for the gods.

That fantasy archer looks amazing! May I ask where you got that miniature?

Love it. Those custom fatigue markers are a nice touch as well.

With the release of the new boxed set for Middle Earth Stratergy Battle Game a few people down at the local gaming club decided to dive into the game, and with (minimal) coaxing I too decided to try and collect an army. Like for many others it is a game that evokes true nostalgia for me, I have many fond memories of collecting the miniatures around the age of twelve, looking at the numbers in the big book which we could barely understanding with our more than lacking english skills, and rolling dice with our made up notions of how it works. In particular I remember building our own Minas Tirith out of styrofoam in a friend's living room.

As a game it has changed much since then, of course, but I do still have my little heap of baddies which have been in a box of neglect for the last decade and a half. I fear three of the nine ringwraiths were lost along the way but I've enough mordor orcs and dark lieutenants to amass a bit of a force. But while there is a charm in painting up these miniatures of my childhood I didn't revel at the idea of playing an orc horde with no special features, not for a first anyway.

Reading through my friend's army book I found to my delight that a whole army of the Dúnedain was possible! If perhaps not advisable, but I have long enjoyed the rangers of the north, with their doom and epic ancestry. But it also became very evident rather quickly that no miniatures for that force is currently in production. So this project that I've now settled on became a first for me on several fronts.

It'll be my first whole metal army, being on the (somewhat) younger end of the spectrum in the hobby, at the very least in my social groups, I never really did play in the era of metal. But as it has ended up, every single Dúnedain miniature made by Games Workshop that I've gotten my hands on had proven to be just so. It's also marked my first real forray into the world of the second hand market.

After a few months and perhaps a bit more spent on this than I would have liked, I've gathered up a bit north of the seven hundred point mark, which I am told is one of the standard sizes for the game. It also began with a very generous offer by a friend who sold me off three such rangers for about 3 euros each, a steal compared to what I ended up having to pay for the rest.

Those three are now ready to be played, even if not at quite the lofty ambitions I initially held to make this project an endeavour in improving my painting and spending much more time on each man in the force. So without more of a ramble from me, here's the three initial Men of Arnor as they stand.

Those look great! I don’t think I have seen those sculpts before ( no surprise if they’re not from a plastic boxed set, as the prices on specialist figs put me off buying any), but I like them a lot. Slightly more armor than the plastic rangers, but not the full plate that the Gondorians are decked out in. Kind of hits a happy medium for me, in terms of how fantasy human soldiers look, and your painting suits the figures well. I’m looking forward to hearing developments as your group dives into middle earth games!

I am yet to see a game with my rangers, indeed after that first initial trio got their finishing touches I appear to have stalled out. But on a whim after some blog reading of late I decided to try and go more ambitious with my miniature photography by setting a rudimentary scene of a kind. It reamains very simple, and I harbour no illusions as to its quality but there is a charm to it.

So here we have one of these brave rangers facing down the advancing orc-ish raiders.

Me too, that picture tells a story. To me it shows well that a highly complicated setup isn’t necessarily required to get good photos.

Lovely picture - I can almost imagine the orcs to be just the first few of a warband incursion that the rangers have to stop. Good work!

Alas no great progress to report here my friends, in truth I even had a mishap the other day of a errant tennisball landing smack into a box of half finished miniatures and there were many broken swords and missing heads in the wake of the carnage. It'll take the men long days to recover. In the meantime I pulled out the camera tonight to take pictures of some non-fantasy projects but snatched up these two from years ago as well.

You've seen them before, most like, if you've read this thread or my other one. But better pictures adds something to them, or so's the hope.
