Title: Exploring exotic fauna - Rangers and companions 14/2
Post by: Ogrob on December 17, 2017, 11:34:31 AM
Thought I might post some of my Ghost Archipelago progress here. I'm mostly working on the beasts right now, with the intention of having a mostly complete bestiary by springtime. Also need to decide what models I want to use for my crew.

So here's what I've got so far:

Thanks! Big dino is from Kaha Miniatures, other dinos are Copplestone and the rest are official North Star models.

Love your colors! I especially like the little egg-stealing dinos. You did a great job on the them.

I need to get started on my bestiary soon, too...!

Thanks! I image searched for various dinosaurs and picked some of the more colourful patterns I found.

love the painted figs - your band at least, very cool selection of figs.
not how i see the dricheans, skin-tone wise, but very nicely done.

and the elephant guys ... you've sculpted those bodies yourself? absolutely brilliant.  :-*

I'm doing my own too - bodies from reaper bones fire giants, heads from zvezda persian elephants - but I think the results will be a little over the top both in size and armour ... your's look as tho' they'll be commercial standard.

THank you. Dricheans live on tropical islands, so non white seemed given to me. The elephants are just a little larger then what North Star models often are, but not crazy oversized.

:o wow. fab.

Thank you!

didn't mean the dricheans should be 'white', just to clarify.

yeah, your elephants look just right - I meant mine, if I finish them, will be rather ott.

Thank you! With official, I meant by the makers of the game so North Star. He's just over human size for the game, about 35mm to the eyes I think.

Great stuff! Love the dinosaurs, really gives a nice Lost Worlds vibe to the Archipelago, quite fitting! :)

The elephant men look awesome, great sculpting and brushwork. For me the big hammers/clubs reinforce the image that they're opponents you'd rather not mess with, unless you're in the company of a powerfull wizard :) Well done!

Malifaux. The gremlin line has a number of nicely sculpted animals. I've left off the gremlins being eaten, but they seem designed to give you that choice.

Got a model from Hero Forge the other day. It's a nifty website that lets you design your own miniatures and have them 3D printed. A bit expensive, sure, but fun. This model is inspired by a piece of artwork that I stumbled across on the net, and I've seen nothing like it in miniature so I decided to give it a go and get one printed.

It showed up with visible print strata, but painted up better then I thought really. What do you think?

Very nice!

Can you tell us more about the quality of the Hero Forge minis?  They seem excellent but I've been afraid to make an order.  I've seen 3D printed at work and the didn't look great.

I got the Premium Plastic which on a quick overview seems to be the only real choice to me. Detail is decent to good, sometimes a little bit shallow but painted up ok as per above. The eyebrows were just about visible on the model after primer.

The plastic is hard, a touch brittle, and the arrow was bent a little bit. There are no mold lines, but a few tabs left from print supports. On the bare model, you do see the different layers from the printer, but they can be sanded on larger surfaces. Either way, I don't feel they show much at all once painted.

I like hero forge miniature (yes expensive) but you can have fun with the designing and you get what you want.  I did these last year http://bandit86.blogspot.com/2017/03/hero-forge-painted.html and have just order 2 more for a frost grave war band.

I placed an order to Hero Forge on June 3rd it arrived today June 8th
Both the figures I designed were perfectly rendered with hardly any print lines that I can see without magnification and I can't see much cleanup that needs to be done. I was pleased with the ones I got last year  but the quality and service is even better now. Yes the price is high but you get something you design (which is fun in itself) to your specification and now a week from concept to delivery...well worth it. Thanks for the super service

I acctually had a problem with the speed. The website said two weeks to process, so I ordered, went on holiday and figured she would turn up when I got back. Instead, they sent the package after like two days, and I barely had time to pick her up from UPS (Sweden doesn't usually do home delivieries on small packages, we pick them up from a service point). One day later and it would have been sent back :D

And the latest addition, two Dust Devils. These are medium Air Elementals from WizKids, so cheap plastics and I couldn't quite get the mold lines out. Still, cheap and servicable for a monster type that is otherwise a bit tricky to find models for.

Figure as much. Durable plastic creations are really preferable to excuisitely detailed figures when monsters are being handled by all players in a large game.

Detail looks great to me, tbh - I'd be very happy with them from every point of view.
It's just that I see a lot of talk about (and apologising for) mold-lines, and I've never really got it.

I don't think the odd mould-line on a well-painted 28/30mm figure detracts much when all's said and done.

If you need more dusties and want different figs for them, try contacting Scott "Four Color Figs" Pyle.  He had some air elementals done in a rather similar style for his Goalsystem Delves kickstarter and might still have some to sell.  I added a little glue-and-sand mix to mine and produced something like yours for an ebay customer a while back.

New crew! I've been reading a lot of african inspired fantasy lately, like Kai Ashante Williams, Nnedi Okarafor and of course some Black Panther, and this crew is inspired by those works. Five crewmen, two archers and two Savages led by a mysterious Warden. The Heritor is a model I made last year, hence the separate photo.

Big fan of your Frostgrave work! The wonder-woman crew leader is probably my favorite, but I really like your latest warband as well!

I came across the adventure pack (https://shop.badgergames.com/product.sc?productId=52&categoryId=47) for Congo recently, and the animals  (https://shop.badgergames.com/category.sc?categoryId=180)from Darkest Africa while looking for more animals to pick up; they may be more good additions to your collection!

Didn't want to start a new thread for Rangers of Shadow Deep, in case it doesn't go anywhere, so posting here instead.

Had a quick read of the rules today and planned out a Ranger with companions. Not sure if numbers or quality is the way to go, but for now I picked a Tracker, a Rogue, a Man-at-arms, a Conjurer and a Bloodhound. Dug out some plastic sprues and came up with the following:

First go at Frostgrave female soldiers, some lovely bits in that kit.

I have now played the first two scenarios, and have started on the third. We lost the faithful bloodhound in the watchtower of Tor Varden, but recruited a swordmistress, Lady Julie.

For some reason I built a custom board just to play the Broken Stairs mission.

Thanks guys! Here is my latest recruit, after the dog died at Tor Varden. Almost didn't post it because I was unhappy with the face, especially the right eye. Let's blame Windsor & Newton, I'm sure the latest two Series 7 I bought were dodgy. Got a couple of Raphael sable brushes since painting this, let's see if they help.

Finished the models for, and played Blood Moon today. My Ranger has found a magic crossbow and a magic cloak so he got a new leveled up miniature.

The rest of the models are scenario NPCs, four survivors who may have been infected with lycanthropy, and two children that might be found in the manor explored.

One thing you could consider, which will probably fix the eye, is adding a brown wash to the face. I always notice the eyes on my models to "rectify" so to speak because of the shading around the eyes.

But I love your team! Very characterful bunch!

Where are those kids from please ? I thought Hasslefree or Breugelburg, but can’t see them if they are. They look like  useful gateway drugs for my own goblin...

Thank you Captain! I do think the Ranger squad is some of my best overall, both modelling and painting.

Some reinforcements for my Ghost Archipelago crew that I have painted through spring. The big guys are Warhammer Tzeentch Cultists with head and weapon swaps. Nice kit without too much GW skull crud.

Kitbashed a Dwarf Ranger for roleplaying, and because I'm really happy with it I am posting it here. It fits in well with my Rangers of Shadow Deep content, and I'm not about to start a fourth log thread for my rpg miniature projects.

Bit list:
Victrix Vikings head
Oathmark Human Infantry arms
GW Empire Wizard hood
Fireforge Templar cloak
Oathmark Dwarf body
Victrix viking knife
Frostgrave Wizard potion and pouch
Frostgrave Soldiers II rope

What do you think?

Gearing up for a replay (and maybe some convention demoing) of Rangers of Shadow Deep. These Fireforge living dead peasants got a quick and dirty paintjob: just basecoats, dark brown wash and some Vallejo special effect paints.

N ice paint job, and yes nice figure, though I am bit concerned at the scale creep.

I have a couple of the other sculpts (Artisan) and they're good too.

He's a big lad for sure, but I kind of like that he towers over regular infantry.

Anyway, here are two more monsters sorted for the bestiary. I struggled to visualize what the Terrorwing should be, but I had a Reaper Bones manticore lying around, and it looks intelligent enough to be a spellcaster and has wings, so close enough. The vulture is from a GW kit of plastic cultists, but works well here in my opinion. What do you think?

I think they are spot on! The eyes on the manticore really makes it look smart enough to cast a spell, is it because you painted them like human eyes?

Also that board with the steps  :-*

Thank you! That was the idea with the eyes, I read that the mythological version often has a human face and so human eyes seemed to make sense.

Another update as I prep for some games in the Shadow Deeps in the coming weeks. Two rangers, kitbashed from Frostgrave Soldiers and Wizards II, Oathmark elves, a Fireforge cloak and a Perry agincourt cavalry longbow. The female wizard kit really complements the soldiers well, and makes up for some of the heads and weapons being a little naff on the soldiers.

It all fits nicely together and the poses look great,
Was it a challenge to use as many kits as possible?  :-*
I wonder is anyone can label all the parts  ???

And here they are, having brought friends!

I got the Fireforge Northmen peasant kit a couple of weeks ago, and it's a really useful kit. The chap with the bow is a straight build from that kit. The veteran is an almost straight Northman build as well, but the head is from Mantic's new Clansmen kit. The wizard is a straight build from Frostgrave Wizards II, but with a viking sword.

Thank you! It's a rather simple base of Scale75 Blood Red and highlighted by mixing in orange. Usually I shade with umber, and maybe use some buff colour to mix into highlights for a more realistic ginger, but as a spellcaster I felt she should have a proper red.
