So, as seems to be a reoccurring annual thing now, I am putting on a game on the Hasslefree table at Salute 2018. This year, I am returning to the popular genre of sci fi.
First off, rather than fudge together my own rules this year, I went for modifying an existing set. Having enjoyed a few games of Mantic's The Walking Dead: All Out War, it struck me that this could be a great basis for the game.
The walkers become xeno's. Instead of having them all set up on the table as per the start of a game normally, we'll be using blip tokens and an xeno deck. Characters can spend an action spotting or shooting at blips within a certain range or if they have one, use a motion tracker. Blips within kill zones and in line of sight are auto spotted. When detected top card of the xeno deck is turned revealing what the blip represents - which can be nothing.
So without boring you anymore here is what I have been up to so far:

Good stuff :D

Looking great. Some excellent paint jobs on some of those figures.

Looks a load of fun.

Looks good! Where are the metal heads on the gene stealers from? They look great.

Three on a sprue, so I tend to buy quite a few. I've just ordered more but realised I'm still going to be short in the long run! ;D
-
Excellent.
-
Wow! That looks fantastic! I might end up stealing the idea myself.
-
Did you borrow the xenomorph deck idea from Zombicide? I like your "blip system" concept. Definitely would try that for a similar style of game. Excited to see this come together. :)

Is there? Link?
Just follow the link given. Prices are cut until Andy sobers up.
Checking it might not apply on the cheaper head sprues. Sorry about that.

mcfonz, the character's choice of minis and brushwork are PERFECT, CONGRATULATIONS!
But using GW's Genestealers as Xenos... is very, VERY lame! :o
Please take a look: https://dawnofthelead.com/2010/10/19/alien-miniatures-a-review/ (https://dawnofthelead.com/2010/10/19/alien-miniatures-a-review/)

I don't think that's the case. Most of the ones in the link you posted are OOP, and even they had a genestealer conversion! lol
I think the conversion is pretty perfect.
-
And also slightly misplaced. I wasn't really thinking about trying to make not-alien-aliens. I have my own sandbox universe and love the Heresy Lurker heads. So I thought I would try them and the work. I also have traditional genestealers, and I have also placed these heads upon Hormagant bodies which work equally as well.
However, on the day, these will not be used. The plan is to use HF Mawes, but I am not painting those up and as I will continue to playtest ideas etc for a little while as well as shoot photo's of the terrain I figured I would include them as they are what I will be using for my game.
Also, I am very aware of the dawn of the lead blog, it's by a guy who will be at Salute helping us run games on the three tables we'll have! :)

I've never played Zombicide! It's more loosely based around the sort of concepts you see in things like Space Crusade or Warhammer Quest where you turn over 'encounter' type cards when you enter a room etc. We had discussed ways in which to do this without having to instantly flood a table with a million xeno's and also help maintain that 'threat' atmosphere. This seemed to be the most simple way of doing it.

It's not a perfect parallel, but a mechanic in Zombicide that accomplishes similar things has led to sometimes intense, sometimes hilarious, and always entertaining game moments. Either way, I'm excited to see how your idea plays out in test games!

Not a huge bit of progress but the main structure to the base of the landing pad is now done.
With the basis of the wear and damage added.
With leadbelcher, typhus corrosion and ryza rust added.

Hasslefree Mawes are awesome models, it's a very nice choice! ;)

Just a little update. Landing pad pretty much done now. Only thing left are the fuel link to the pad itself and the barriers around the pad.
-
Plodding on continues (I realised after taking the photos that the platypus tail had fallen off, but it's been fixed now :D):

Fits in so well it took me a while to place it!
I like the Hasslefree Mesaan Big Guys (now Macrocosm I believe) for aliens.
This is moving along really nicely.
-
That’s looking very good, especially like the weathering approach. Will look forward to seeing this in the flesh.
-
Looks good.
That troop carrier does fit in well (it was the only thing I liked in the prequel films).
-
Thanks for the kind words.
@Levied Troop - the idea is for this to be a bit of a remote outpost. The plan is for a refinery type building (which I am working on the start of today), this landing pad, some pipelines and some other pieces of terrain scattered around them. I may also include a 3rd TT combat tower - I have two more other than those mentioned that I could add, but I don't want to over-do the height aspect too much. The weathering is simple - I have been playing around with different techniques but the fastest and easiest is using a bit of sponge from a carry case tray and sponge it on, dragging it in some cases over the edges which gives that feeling of eroding with the elements. I'm also using art acrylic - Reeves Burnt Umber. I then add a bit of gun metal and GW's ryza rust effect which is really good for adding that orange rust.
Re the drop ship - I don't think it's made anymore, it's an old Revell easy build 1/72 kit. It was less than £10 in a sale so couldn't pass it up. I do wish I hadn't excitedly built it, as snap fit tends to mean hard to unbuild!! but it is very nice, I have added some landing pads for it to be able to sit and land.

Thanks buddy, means a lot from someone who's posts I often look to for inspiration and motivation!

Cheers! I blame you for all of this, I really do lol
I was trying to work out how many I helped you with and how many I have done overall. This will be the fourth game on the HF table - two with your BFBC2 boards, two with boards I have built. Then I did the sci fi one the year before that. Then I seem to remember; Planet of the Apes, Fantasy WW1, BFBC2 . . . . have I missed anything?

Sounds about right....sorry.
lol
In truth, I’ve enjoyed having a break from running Salute games ...very rewarding, but bloody hard work.
Maybe I’ll find something that catches my eye enough to run another one soon.
-
May not seem like much, but it's the start of a tall piece of terrain that hopefully will resemble some sort of sci fi industrial refinery type building.

Wow!

Thanks buddy! :D
1st strut test piece:
Undercoated and sponged to a slightly lighter colour (GW Zandri Dust Spray, then Miniature Paints Sand).
Then 1st stage of weathering. Using a sponge again applying Reeves artists acrylic burnt umber to the edges and a few other spots.

I wasn't entirely planning on including it but feedback and a desire to get it painted have pushed the piece into being a part of the table and the present ship on the landing pad. I have gone over some of the areas of green and have made a start on the weathering.

It needs some yellow details and a big '2' on it somewhere :)

What he said lol
It looks like a very good start though, the weathering has a nice direction to it.

Should not miss that at Salute.
-
Thanks Ultravanillsmurf - do come and say hello! I'll be wearing my LAF badge I am sure (as long as I can remember!).
I'm probably going to put together a montage vid later on but I put this little tutorial together over the weekend for the weathering as some folk around about the interwebs had asked how I had done it.

I put a little montage together of what I have managed to get done so far. Working on the top tier of what I am called the refinery at the moment.

That crawler is inspired! 8) Good use of the Poundland van as well! ;) I’m looking forward to seeing what you do with that!
-
So are you going to magnetize the underside of the platform so the xenos can crawl along the bottom of it :D
This is looking seriously awesome.
-

Yeah, I was, erm, inspired by a certain thread on here!!!! ;) ;D The colour scheme should hint at what it's going to be . . . . a touch of real world thrown into future world.

A little update from last nights first little playtest. As usual, I made mistakes. The main one being forgetting to bring the xenos! Grey minis stood in for them for this game.

!Zombies! Hundreds of them

We had another test run last night, I could spam all of the images but probably easier just to do some and share the folder (mods, might be worth looking at an option to be able to embed imgur albums, I know there is one on other forums I go on).

Game night three, last week, and another chance to show off bits of the table that I have been completing. The table is now complete, and shots will follow from Salute if not before if I get a chance to set some bits and bobs up for shots.

Thanks! Hope to see some of you at salute. :D

A busy few weeks but was nice to meet some of you in person at Salute and/or Diceni.
Didn't a chance to take many images of Salute, but here is an album for Diceni:

Your needing to show more of finished stuff. From your Imgur album I was only managing to grab glimpses of the crawler and what looks like other Poundland vehicles.

And the dropped refinery which I am now tasked with having to rebuild :'( Right at the end of the day too. Gutted.
I will take more photo's - need to do group shots of the survivors, Xeno's and vehicles as you say. Need to find a funky background to shoot them in front of. Any suggestions? I was thinking some desktop wallpapers I could print onto card etc.
-
Two options really. Either just get a model railway background or (and probably the easier option) just get a big bit of card and spray so it looks like some weird alien colour of sky....

Ok, so the arrival of a deadzone battlemat today helped inspire me to do a photoshoot, hopefully better images for you here:

I do plan more now I am the other side of the two conventions this was aimed to be ready for.
I am currently pushing on through more xenos. 8)

Great additions 8)
I can see the pound shop running out of toys soon lol

So having recently upgraded my gaming table, I felt I had to christen it so broke out the game and played the solo version.

All of the crew of adventurers successfully escaped having turned off the mayday beacon and prevent other salvage crews from being drawn to a rather dangerous little outpost. However, all were mauled a bit and one of them remains infected... They also managed to rescue the girl and cat...
Stand by for the next instalment... :D

Trying to use the various characters I have in my lead/plastic/resin pile to help separate painting units as a bit of a palette cleanser. These will see use in both this project and possibly in Necromunda as well. First use of pigments on bases too, love the sense of scale they give.

Lots to Love in this thread. I particularly like he character in so many of the figures and the vehicles, as well of course as your excellent bugs.

Your minis are looking Slick there Fonzy.
I like what you've done with the nids!
