I have been hooked. Thanks to Julian at Victrix, for all his help, and I’m embarking on my first big 28mm project in years.
Numidians for Hail Caesar. Models have shipped. Stay tuned. I haven’t painted in so long. I plan to airbrush the majority of them using an Iwata HP-B+; speed, blending, all at once.
Standby, wait one...
Cama4actual, out.
-
Good to see you again - looking forward to this developing.
-
Nice choice, victrix has great basic numidian units (cavalry, innsatry and the bran new elephants); moreover you can mix it easily with other range (ie cartaginians, greek exc) to produce ad hoc minis. Looking forward to see the first units!
-
Check up in last year's post on what they actually looked like. Some very handy photographs.
-
Good to see you posting again Grant. Nice project to get back into it.
-
Thanks for the support guys. :D
It feels good to be back in the game. They’re supposed to arrive today, pretty excited like Christmas.
Pics to follow!
-
Great project Grant, looking forward for your miniatures :D
-
And so it begins ... :D

Great to see u back Grant :)
looking forward to seeing what you do with this project
-
I think I'd go mad taking on a project of this size...good luck! :D
-
Everything including the kitchen sink! :D
-
WOW! :D
-
No half measures Grant - that's a horde you got! :D
What will be your unit size for the infantry? For my HC Carthaginian infantry I'm unsure if I'll do them 2 or 3 ranks deep..............
-
Splendiferous!
-
Grant,
That is a fantastic undertaking. Looking forward to seeing the project coming together.

We went for 3 ranks deep and they look just right. Almost a phalanx but not quite but deeper than the Romans who are in 2 ranks deep. In Hail Ceasar with the the phalanx rule it gives the Medium (or in the case of Numidians - Light Infantry) Spearmen a chance against a legion.
-
I've made up some Numidian cavalry for my Roman army and they are incredible sculpts. I like them a lot and I hope you will too Grant! Good luck, bud. Can't wait to see your progress.
-
I painted a Numidian army using figures from Crusader miniatures.
These Victrix plastics do appeal though.
My army was used for WAB, with some success, but using that system it relied heavily on the elephants. Plus having cavalry that feared the elephants was problem when deploying.
No idea how they will perform under Hail Ceaser rules.
I'm looking forward to seeing this develop.

Great to see you back Grant.
What prompted you to re-enter the arena?
-
I love Numidians / Berbers.
Posting to watch.

Thanks! And to everyone else for the support.
Well...
just when I thought I was out, they pulled me back in!
I’ve spent the last 8 or so months purging; I was down to nothing. But I have a lot of time on my hands; I’m off work for medical reasons, and next week I’ll have an airbrush and paints again.
Need to fill my days with more than Netflix.
-
Heck of a start there, Grant ;D
-
Finally progress! First 48 painted; waiting on shield transfers and then can base them! Elephants started while I wait...

Grant, are the shields and weapons separate on the plastic Numidian infantry? I'm thinking of using them for construction workers and slaves in Gangs of Rome.
-
The Numidians are:
Head
Body including legs
Right arm with weapon - easy to cut off the javelin/whatever
Left arm
Separate shield
I think they could make good Roman workers.
-
Excellent. thank you.

Cheers! For swizzle :D
-
nice work mate, and great to have you back. Will follow with interest
-
Nice work, any chance of a close up on some warriors?
-
Nice project coming on well.
-
Thanks all!
Finished three units of my first division today. The shield decals are by LBMS, movement trays are Victrix that I’ve cut and modified to fit four bases.

By the Gods but that seemed quick to me. I admire and can only imagine ever cracking out a unit in such a time frame. Well done and very nice looking too.
-
Oh man! Those are great! :-*
-
those look great Grant
-
Love the grimy colour scheme and those shields are S-T-U-N-N-I-N-G.
-
The colour on the helmets is amazing. Nice work all round
-
cracking job, what have you used for the plants on the bases?
-
These fellas look really good and I love the patterns on the shields.
-
Thanks everyone :D
The grass on the bases (which in photos look very plain - might wash them...) is Lowland Tufts by Army Painter. I stuck three per base using superglue. Simple and I think looks good.
-
Great progress Grant :-*

Cheers and thanks!

Love your figures, they look great.
A question if I may,
What company's shield transfers are you using?

Thanks! Appreciate that.
The transfers are by LBMS - available here:
https://www.littlebigmenstudios.com
I got mine direct through Victrix though as I had to order some extra minis for the next unit.
-
Are the animal skin ones transfers, too? I love them. But I feel sad for the giraffes. I like giraffes.
Cracking job either way. Really like the earthy, subdued look you've achieved. Now I like flashy bright colours as much as the next man, but this is something different, and I must say I like it.
-
Cheers; yes even the giraffe shields are transfers. They really being a dull paint scheme to life.
No actual giraffes were harmed in the finishing of these miniatures :D
-
Those are wonderful. I love the shield designs and how you have got them all looking like a homogenous force but distintively different units. Excellent. :-* :-*
-
Good stuff grant - your elephants will be even better :D
-
Thanks guys! :D
I picked up enough transfers to try and get unity with my units without making them all the same - glad you like it ;)
Cheers El Grego; I hope my elephants turn out well too - I killed my favourite series 7 brush, so that delayed me until today to get back to painting.
-
Not bad, not bad at all. (Want to make sure you don't become a prima donna.)

Too late!

That is lovely, wish I could justify the money to get a set.
-
Very nice. Love the little touch of using the elephant to step on an enemy.
-
Thanks guys; Voltan - they come two to a pack, super good deal.
Hi Rhu - I saw the slightly raised leg and just had to squish a Carthaginian!
-

Yeah, just super skint at the mo. :'(

None too shabby 8)
So are all those intricate patterns on the howdah and, erm.. saddlecloth, transfers? Rather amazing. What will they think of next! ;)

Thanks! P
Almost all - I botched a transfer and had to hand paint one ... ;)
The LBMS transfers are so simple to use, even in the fiddle parts of these blankets (corners). A sharp blade meant I could apply the transfer and trim what was not fitting on the spot.
-
Hey!
The transfers and all came out great but the paint job on the elephant is the bees knees!

Thanks Ray! I airbrushed the base, hand brushed up, and then used a thin airbrush filter to get the brown tones on the skin. Pretty happy with the result :D
Cheers
-
nice work ;)
-
Impressive! Very well done!
-
Thanks guys :D
-
Fantastic elephant Grant :-*
You are making good progress and it spurns me to keep up expanding my army :)
Pity we live far away - we could meet for a game so that my carthaginians can have their revenge for the squashed Libyan! lol lol
-
Hahah! That would be fun indeed!
Cheers :D for the comments - I’ve got Iberian cavalry up next!
-
Marvelous!
-
Just put these up in the Bazaar.
