This years theme has had me rather stumped. I couldn't think of anything that would fit in with current projects without a significant amount of shoe-horning or a merely tenuous link. I therefore began thinking more generally.....
Something ill-advised would likely be considered folly; Therefore I have decided to build a Folly or tower. As it won't be for a specific project and I will likely have no use for afterwards (just like a real Folly!), it will be a fantasy influenced piece. I may subsequently then be able to sell it on to someone for Frostgrave, Warhammer or similar.
The last fantasy building I made was likely more than 20 years ago, but I'm rather looking forward to it (presuming I have enough free time, as I am currently building stuff for someone else which really should take priority)
I don't have a specific design in mind, but it won't be as large (or legendary, or mysterious) as Jimbibblys Wizards TowerTM ;)
Small blue foam blocks may be involved though...
Good luck to all the other participants and thanks to Vanlak for raising his head above the parapet to run the contest.
-
What’s wrong with tenuous links? Without them we probably wouldn’t have half the entries this year....including mine! ;)
What about a more modern folly to go with your Aliens dropship? Maybe with a landing pad too?

Nothing at all, its not an easy theme this time.

I did consider it, but I will stick with the Folly.
-
Well at least I have started!
Just the basic layout of the main components so far:

-
Ummm... tasty folly...
-
Clearly we needs at least one more tube of Pringles, er, I mean, tower. That's it, tower
-
following
-
Christmas pringles, truly the thinking man's building material.
-
Pringles! That's familiar lol
My build will use on or two of those tubes as well :D
-
You do realise that once you pop....you won’t be able to stop! ;)
-
The Pringles tube has been cut down in height. The tube and cork bark glued to the 3mm MDF base with exterior PVA.
The stonework has started; adding individually cut blue-foam blocks with PVA. Each layer is allowed to partially dry out before the next is applied. I have also made a start on the door; plastic card, enscribed with planking and woodgrain.
A full-frontal picture for all those Pringle aficionados!
A close-up of the stonework so far. Larger stones at the bottom. The smaller size stones will continue to the top. The jaunty camera angle suggests the stones aren't horizontal, but they are. I drew lines around the tube at intervals to help keep things level as I worked.
-
:-*
-
Awesome. ;D
Proper scratchbuilding ;) :)
-
The stonework is looking very good!
-
It’s not a proper project until you stick on little blue foam bricks! Are you going to put wrought iron on the door? Maybe some bracing or a big handle?
-
That's looking good Paul. There's something a bit special about scratch building.
-
I'm always amazed by people that make foam bricks :)
Looking good so far, follies are pretty interesting, visually and from a cultural perspective.
-
Nice,look forward to this Paul.
-
This is looking fantastic! Can't wait to see it progress
-
Thank you for all the encouragement. :D

The door will be added to. I just needed the outline to do the stonework around the door (see below).

I blame James! That said, I do have form for foam inspired madness...... http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=7181.0
Update: More foam, slightly more cork:
Making stones from foam:
A: Strip of blue foam 10mm x 6mm (Dimensions can be varied depending on how big you want the finished stone).
B: Single block; generally 10-15mm long.
C: Curve cut to rear and front of block.
D: Trimmed to size and the sharp edges slightly sanded for a more rounded look.

Loving the Wizards Tower, mate.
8) 8)
How many more packs of Pringles will you need to eat before you have enough to finish it?
;D
-
Excellent progress :-*
-
And the brick size decreases as you get higher, very nice touch.
-
I like how this is developing!
-
I've used individual bricks also (more fun building) but the work you put in each one is insane. But totally worth it as they look fabulous! :-*
-
Slower progress in the past 2 weeks due to various other things going on. ::)
Just more blue foam added:
More blue foam too:
The bits around the door and windows were a bit fiddly, but all sorted now. The lower part has been "textured" but the upper not (so far), just to show the contrast. I have also left the blocks around the door and windows "un-textured"
-
Excellent progress. ;D
-
I blame James!
;D
-
Very neat work :-*
-
Looking fantastic so far 8) :D
-
That’s a lovely, clean build mate! Kudos! :-*
-
Nice blocks ;D
-
It looks very nice. Very organic.

This is looking very good!
-
Lovely work, mate.
Very smoothly done.

This foam brick thing will never catch on, though.
You would have to be absolutely mental to try and build anything bigger than this using this technique.
I mean seriously mental........
-
That’s looking excellent Paul 8)

And by 'watching' he means 'stalking'.
I know.
It is quite amusing to see him and Balaclava Boy trying to hide behind the same bush......

Thank you all for the kind comments. :)

I find it quite relaxing, but only do it in short sessions (allowing the glue to dry) so it doesn't get tedious.
A round tower means a lot more work that straight walls, as each block is individually cut and sanded to fit. I'm not sure I would attempt a whole castle....
And by 'watching' he means 'stalking'.
'Stalking' is not an adjective I would ascribe to James..... where would he hide? :D
(https://www.herocollector.com/Content/ArticleImages/gojira.jpg)
-
where would he hide? :D
In plain sight obviously :D
-
Are you going to make a Godzilla with individual scales next? lol
Coming along really nicely.
-
Meanwhile, back at the build.....
The top of the folly will be wider than the rest of the tower. To achieve that I found a cardboard tube (from a roll of parcel tape) that fitted snugly over the Pringles tube. A circle of foamed PVC (Sintra or similar) was cut for the floor and glued in place inside the roll. A length of round balsa, cut to size and shape, was added to provide the basis for a small side tower with a door for access. The plastic card door has been engraved to simulate wood.
(http://leadadventureforum.com/gallery/31/369_06_02_18_2_52_55_2.jpg) (http://leadadventureforum.com/gallery/31/369_06_02_18_2_52_55_3.jpg)
Larger blocks are needed for the expansion in diameter: A ring of blue foam was cut to form the basis of the blocks, which will then be cut into individual blocks (already marked out for consistency of size) before each is glued in place.

Lovely :)

Very nice job on this, really clean.

Very nice. I can't wait to see this with paint on.

Indeed, but 'Blue Brick Syndrome' is dangerously close, I fear!

The grandmaster at work. I love it, please more...
-
Another small update. Mostly more blue bricks, which makes for rather boring updates I'm afraid.... ::)
Upper door and pillars finished and glued in position. Now I can get on and finish the stonework for the sidetower.
I have also done the flagstones for the top of the main tower and added a thin strip of foam embossed with stonework for the interior.
(http://leadadventureforum.com/gallery/31/369_12_02_18_2_28_50_0.jpg) (http://leadadventureforum.com/gallery/31/369_12_02_18_2_28_50_1.jpg)
Most of the stonework now complete. Just need to do the big top blocks.
(http://leadadventureforum.com/gallery/31/369_12_02_18_2_28_50_3.jpg) (http://leadadventureforum.com/gallery/31/369_12_02_18_2_28_50_4.jpg)
Once all the stonework is done I can add the roof and tiles for the side-tower. Then I need to do the steps up to the main door and any additional groundwork. Hopefully it will get done this week, leaving a week for painting.

Lovely work Paul :-*

Fabulous 8) :-*

Everything they said with a cherry on top! 8)

Awesome Paul, ;D
-
I tried making a couple of buildings with Hirst Art blocks once upon a time.
However, I never worked out how to get paint into all the cracks and there were always bits of white poking out. I'm curious to see how you tackle it, as I will probably steal the method :D
-
Thanks chaps. :)
@zemjw: I'm not quite sure myself! I am aware of the possible problem, but can't use spray cans (it will melt the foam) and I don't have an airbrush. My initial thought is to go with very thin paint, in several layers if needs be.
If that doesn't work then I will paint it pale blue... :D
-
that is awesome. I love it,but it must be a real labour of love to build it one brick at a time. keep up the good work!
-

The Hirst Arts site talks about using household emulsion, but I never had the courage to try - link (http://www.hirstarts.com/painting/painting1.html)
-
Hi Paul I built a castle using blue foam bricks, When is was finished I coated the whole thing in a very watery mix of polyfiller to fill in all the spaces between the bricks and then painted it with household emulsion, very watery coats as well
Started with this
(http://leadadventureforum.com/gallery/25/1912_16_09_16_5_08_31_3.jpg)
and ended up with this

@gamer Mac
Very nice Colin. It was excellent, although I never got close to it with my troops at BLAM!
I think even a watery layer of filler would block the detail on my tower. Yours benefits from the blockier, rugged exterior. My blocks are possibly a bit too close fitting and uniform. I think filler would fill in any gaps and I would loose the effect. Watery, thin layers of paint are the way I will go. I have a small test piece I built before starting the tower so will test-paint that first to try and avoid any big problems.
Side tower details:

Tower roof and steps still to be done before painting commences. Running short of time....
-
That’s really coming together! :-*
How are you planning to do the roof tiles? Cornflake packets card?
-
It really is looking very good Paul. 8) 8) 8)
-
This is brilliant, Paul.
That little side tower is piling sheer folly on folly.
Love it!
:-* :-*
As for painting it: A cheap long bristled brush stabbed into it should get to all the parts other beers brushes cant reach.
;)
-
Looking excellent. :)
How about a coat of PVA before you paint it. It might help strengthen the blocks? :(
-

I use Mod Podge with some paint. It's a glue and sealer(varnish). Gives a nice hard coating without blocking detail.
Looking really awesome. :-*

That's what I did with the blue foam on my graveyard wall and that worked fine.
-

Likely a bit thicker than cereal packet, which I think is too thin.
@Malamute etc
I am trying thinned PVA on half of a small test piece I built before starting the tower. Once dry I will test paint it to see how the treated and un-treated areas compare for toughness and appearance.
And she's climbing a stairway to......Folly. :D

I have now completed the steps up to the door, again in blue foam.
No handrail, nosing marking, non-slip surface, or uniform riser height. True folly for the health & safety conscious. :D
I have also done the groundwork on the base. Nearly there now.
-
Nice work on the steps - we should have included a health and safety aspect to this edition of BSC, the least safe wins of course... :D
-
That stairway, well, the whole build, is a thing of beauty :-*
-
Wow this is coming together so well. Beautiful.
-
Really nice looking work. I love the different textures :-* :-*. This should paint up great!

Great work,stairs look terrific :)

Thank you for the nice comments. :)
Really nice looking work. I love the different textures :-* :-*. This should paint up great!
I'm never that confident putting paint on my creations. Strangely, I tend to prefer seeing it in its finished but unpainted state.
I have applied thinned PVA to the steps and flagstones on the folly top, which has definitely provided a tougher finish. This is where miniatures could stand, so it made sense to do so. I still can't decide if I will PVA the whole exterior as, although it will made it more resilient, I am concerned that the PVA will fill the small gaps between blocks and I will lose the detail as a consequence.
The roof of the side tower has been tiled. I decided to do a mix of rectangular and round tiles to add a bit more interest.
(http://leadadventureforum.com/gallery/31/369-220218120842-31455808.jpeg) (http://leadadventureforum.com/gallery/31/369-220218120842-31457414.jpeg)
Procreate used to cap the roof. Details completed on the main door.
(http://leadadventureforum.com/gallery/31/369-220218120842-31459366.jpeg) (http://leadadventureforum.com/gallery/31/369-220218120842-31458461.jpeg)
I have also made a couple of wall torches to go either side of the main door. If I decide to add them to the model, it will be done once painting is completed.
-
Looking absolutely top drawer. Love it! :-*
-
Lovely details :-*
-
Fantastic detailing on that door.
-
Great attention to detail, awesome build :-*
-
Brilliant! :-*....and in my experience of your work, you have nothing to worry about! Your stuff is always really well painted!
-
That's really something, very nice attention to detail.

Wow. Wow. Wow

An image upload problem is ongoing, but is being tackled; BUT due to this issue I decided to extend the deadline by a week, so you have a little more time.

Lovely Details :-* :-* :-* :-* :-* :-*
I am sure you will paint it up a treat

Wow... That came out great, Paul!

Your build turned out great. Man I'd have loved to have that on the table when I played WHFB back in the early 90s :)

was this project ever painted & posted - perhaps in another thread?
thanks

thank you for the link. the folly really came out nice. I sensed a concern the masonry would be obscured by the finishing process but it looks perfect.
thanks again
