This will have my efforts at building and painting 28mm scale figures, vehicles and scenery for small unit skirmishes in the retro-ultra-modern-post apocalypse world of Twilight 2000.
Selecting equipment and uniforms is slightly complicated for Twilight 2000, I am going with the original 1984 timeline (though I still have to retrieve the books from the loft). This is from 1984 so is basically the breaking off point from our timeline. So only stuff available or on the drawing board at that time matches. Not exactly a big splash, but a Soviet equipped infantryman..
An Empress Miniatures CWR007 Chechnya Russian, armed with an assault rifle(with UGL) and a disposable anti-tank weapon.

Nice job on the camo!
-
Got to love TW2K :)
Looking forward to seeing how this project progresses!
-
Thanks.
Finding compatible figures for this period is a bit difficult. There are British figures of that period, but I do not have them.
I do have a number of Crooked Dice figures, including the X-Commandos.
They are equipped with heavy looking body armour and L1A1 SLR rifles.
I also have some of the camouflaged British helmets from Empress Miniatures. Here is a combination of the two plus a Warlord Games Commando rucksack,
(https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-9bFyflEo7bY/WmSuLkI7bhI/AAAAAAAAC7U/mg7vpIUnn9AKWvk2BzxDKsDE1gdWvsIhQCLcBGAs/s1600/tw2k-brit1-1.png)
The surface is not very good, so I will run a milliput slurry over the surface to smooth it out.

Back to the Soviets.
Two more from the Empress Miniatures Chechnya Russians.
A marksman.

Very cool! I played a lot of Twilight back in the day it was a great game.

A patrolling British infantryman with his L1A1 SLR.

The figure is based on a Crooked Dice X-Commando with an Empress Miniatures Modern British helmet with enthusiastic camouflage. The rucksack is from the Warlord Games British Commandoes range.

Current thoughts are Spectre Operations (with suitable tech limits) or Skirmish Sangin.
The former does have ammo use rules, which will probably need tweaking for one off play, I cannot remember if Sangin has them.

For entertainment purposes, there is also The Walking Dead: All Out War, but without the zombies (though decals are an option).

It has been a while since I have posted here, but this week I ordered three packs of Cold War figures from Under Fire Miniatures.
Soviet Pack RMR2 comprises one NCO pointing the way, two PKM machine guns and an AK74.
Bundeswehr pack 1 comprises four troops armed with the G3 rifle.
The East German pack NVA1 comprises a platoon commander, radio operator, a sniper and an RPG7.
One from each pack on bases with an Empress Universal Soldier in woolly hat for scale.
I am working my way through assembling them at the moment.
They are sparsely equipped for Twilight 2000, but I may remedy that with some green stuff.

Those were on sale recently right? ;)
I've kind of gone off that sculptor lately. I find that, whilst it isn't so apparent on these, that he gives a king of "gorilla arms" look to his miniatures. They tend to look a bit too long.
I'd eyed up those East Germans for my WWII collection, as barring the AKs they'd do for alternative history Germans with those new model Stalhelms they were wearing in the early days of that state. Swap out the AKs for say Die Waffenkammers StG-44s (or better yet find an StG-45 or G3) and they'd fit the bill. :)

They look good (especially the Bundeswehr). Some of them might get a change of trousers (instant sunshine will do that) and some more baggage.

One of the effects of throwing Instant Sunshine around is a requirement for new trousers.
The Under Fire Miniatures Cold War Soviet figures are dressed in the correct trousers with the uncomfortable high boots. This is fine for troops at the outbreak of war, after a few years, the parade ground uniform will undergo some modification.
The first thing was to use a small length of greenstuff on each boot which was sculpted with a knife blade to form laces. Once that was set, more greenstuff was used to restyle the trouser cuffs.

Nice conversion, are you baseing that off the combat shoes used by the Soviets in Afghanistan?

Nice conversion, are you baseing that off the combat shoes used by the Soviets in Afghanistan?
Thanks. I had not thought of that, no it is just that the tall boots looked a bit to regular and the plate description in Elite 217 says they were uncomfortable.. The boots are likely to be whatever he has picked up and fit (for a given value of fit). Regular supply chains are likely to have fallen apart before the deployment of strategic sunshine.
-

This is quite possibly one of my favourite sentences written on a wargames website. Love the conversion!
-
Sounds like a reasonable enough excuses to me. :)
-
I have based (and added new trousers to the Soviets) to most of the last order, and so I am ready to start painting. I have a plan for the Soviets and the NVA, but Iam wondering about the Bundeswehr uniform?
These are the figures:
Would these have been what looks like Field Grey in the Osprey Elite 16 "NATO Armies Today", or would they be Flecktarn?
From what I can find, Flecktarn appears to have been issued about 1990.
The break up of the Soviet Union affect Soviet equipment choices and the Iraqi invasion of Kuwait and the military advances rushed out before Operation Granby affects NATO.
I do have the corresponding Warpac books (Elite 10 and 12) on my shopping list.
-
I believe those gentlemen are supposed to represent the pre-90s gray-green uniform. And i am not sure if the Flecktarn and the old uniforms were of diffrent cuts or not. :?
With the Flecktarn being issued in 1990 after unification with the east. So I guess its up to you weather you want them in Flecktarn or not, because I they tested the uniform pattern around 1974.
Maybe keep the reagular troops in gray-green and the scouts or eilite troops in Flecktarn?
-
In the '80s the West Germans wore what were described as 'Moleskin' fatigues in the UK, they were really popular with students at the time, myself included. They were a slight grey toned 'sage' colour after being washed, but were olive green on issue.
Bundeswehr Moleskin as a search term should give a wealth of photos on Google images.
There is a German Wiki article on Bundeswehr combat uniforms here: https://de.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Feldanzug
There was an older 'splinter' camo suit, which iirc were cut up to make helmet covers when the OG fatigues were issued.
-
Thanks both of you.
I am going for the field grey (I have a can ^__^).
It is my impression of the colour of the uniforms in Deutschland 83, an excellent series (East German infiltrates the Bundeswehr), if you are in the UK it is available free on All4
-
Thanks for the link Arlequin! Helps alot.
Ultra, looking forward to seeing your guys when they are done.

So, the first Under Fire Miniatures Soviet figure painted, an NCO.
I did swap the head for a woolly hat head from Empress Miniatures.
Most of the uniforms in the Osprey "Inside the Soviet Army (Today)" are the same slightly sandy khaki shade used in the Second World War, however there are some camouflaged uniforms, the KLMK pattern being one of them. As these are going to be used for Twilight 2000 (set a number of years after the Soviet Union broke up) I thought I would use the pattern on the uniform.
The NCO has a different camouflage pattern on his trousers, having liberated them.
One of the modifications i did make was the trouser cuffs, but the basing has rather hidden the changes.
He also has a rucksack, from the Rubicon Allied Stowage set.

And this guy can work for 80s up to modern day conflicts in Eastern Europe.

Lovely work - especially like the Soviet camo

So I have finished the remaining three figures from the Under Fire Soviet Infantry pack.
A Rifleman with AK-74.

And another PKM (you can never have enough machine guns).
He has brought his security blanket along with him.
And a group shot:

More photographs here (https://ultravanillasmurf.blogspot.com/2018/10/under-fire-miniatures-cold-war-soviet_13.html)

I'm a bit rusty in my T2K timeline, but didn't East and West Germans join together early on as the shooting started? The uniforms of this new "unified" army can be a bit of both BRD and DDR colours. Not to mention that in WW2 they developed new uniform camouflage patterns over a couple of years, so you've got a plausible excuse to bring in Flecktarn early if you like.

You bring up a good point Aris. So yeah paint them how you want to!

Hi,
I am using the first edition timeline, so the BW goes across the IGB while (and because) the NVA are being fed into meat grinder that is the ongoing Sino-Soviet war. Initally the NVA remain in their barracks.
There would be a unified German army, but it wuld take time they do not have to integrate fully (in our world the BW continued to use NVA gear during the unification).
Of course there are going to be some parts of the NVA that remain loyal to their Soviet allies.
My guess after five years of total war there is going to be rather a mix and match of kit.
I am going for the "Deutschland '83" look field grey for BW (which will include some former NVA).
Interestingly on my way back from SELWG I saw someone in a rain drop jacket (I did not photograph it but I now have the colour in my head)..
With reference to Flecktarn, I have the Empress Bundeswehr to paint up in flecktarn.

They do look rather nice when painted in woodland Flecktarn.

So I have finally finished the Bundeswehr.

I do need to get some better photographs. Sarissa Mini-Mart and a Blotz telephone box make up the background.
I need to order the rest of the figures.
-
They look great. the back ground terrain helps bring them to life.
-
Thanks.
For an urban environment, they have let the grass grow under their feet.
-
Urban planers have made stranger decisions. So I can over look a bit of grass in on the side walk. :D
-
I tend to add a bit of static grass to the pavements and other bits of my urban terrain, so these guys could just be in a destitute area. :)
Still, what you've done is effective enough for basing. They'll do for WWIII scenarios, or civic unrest as they are right now. If you're concerned over the amount of grass then just make it more patchy and add some street litter.
-
I have previously posted a version of the Crooked Dice Land Rover.
Crooked Dice have released stowage sets, and two of the Medium Stowage sets suit the Land Rover.

I still have to add some decals and weathering.

Thanks.
And, being Twilight 2000, you can always add some orange juice concentrate and turn it into punch.
-
Is that the way that stowage comes? In big resin plates like that? Seems useful for other vehicles like the beds of pickups I suppose, if it can be cut down to size that is. And I can see why Crooked Dice went for that Land Rover. With all its flat sides and hard edges it matches that style of vehicle their casting seems to be best suited for (without looking as weird as that Humvee they did).
Still, what British army Land Rover either doesn't have a bit of rust on it, or is streaked with rain? Not one I've seen. Go use half a pot of Citadel Agrax Earthshade on it and come back tomorrow. ;)
-
Here is one I prepared earlier...

I still have to put some decals on this one as well (and more rust and Earthshade).
Out of interest, how much of a Series III Land Rover is steel?
Sorry, it is Large Stowage:
http://www.crooked-dice.co.uk/wp/product/stowage-large/ (http://www.crooked-dice.co.uk/wp/product/stowage-large/)
And yes, the HMMWV is very odd (I have one for my PLA).
-
I would have assumed that the majority of the Series III would be metal, though its been years since I've been in one. And well you never know, it could all turn out to be made out of horse hair or something silly. :P
If you're really interested then there's plenty of images of rust on Land Rovers on Google. Though car wrecks aren't something more companies make, so have fun with a hammer and greenstuff replicating it.
https://www.google.co.uk/search?q=Series+III+Land+Rover+rust&tbm=isch&tbs=rimg:CdRgEFNMnDsAImArAcaTSKMWG6BgLQLomy6IfiD_1HRjYLQD4OUOfjzMSBV5u8wdgGsxwmhgFuaBXdgbhs_16F8Tq-R8ki1OQDA6MVlDKAepKVEF4Mxb2MfB4vgku38Ze1b-lgSQs0gTWe9EoqEgkrAcaTSKMWGxGWspdmNSbH1SoSCaBgLQLomy6IEZayl2Y1JsfVKhIJfiD_1HRjYLQARFHfqLkcLDYQqEgn4OUOfjzMSBRGvyXUwGMbWuyoSCV5u8wdgGsxwEUhS67hoGNFvKhIJmhgFuaBXdgYRqrxUlJwc8CQqEgnhs_16F8Tq-RxGbaDFMdP-XuioSCcki1OQDA6MVEVpP0w8PQBuOKhIJlDKAepKVEF4RKFiJraeawF4qEgkMxb2MfB4vghEgEZZn-fvE_1CoSCUu38Ze1b-lgERs7vJhbw4k9KhIJSQs0gTWe9EoRK-0zoLTzd0c%3D&tbo=u&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwiHx6vBgIrfAhVBTBoKHaVTDuMQrnZ6BAgBEBY&biw=1536&bih=723&dpr=1.25

I have to admit to thinking the metal was aluminium (wikipedia mentions an aluminium-magnesium alloy).
However
http://www.glencoyne.co.uk/buyguide.htm (http://www.glencoyne.co.uk/buyguide.htm)
-
Huh, I didn't know that actually. So the frame and main structural components that the aluminium is bolted to is steel, and prone to rust. That would make sense as its what gives the vehicle its integrity. Which would then infer that the rust would spread from there when it comes to weathering a model Land Rover.
-
From that buy guide, it sounds as if the chassis and bulkhead can corrode away, leaving a stack of body panels.
From the images on your search, rust bleeds from the bulkhead through the front of the driver/front passenger doors.
The wheels and the roof rack are going to be sites of rust, and where the spare and the latter are attached
I know what aluminium corrosion looks like, not sure how not to make it look like bird poo on the model.
-
So, having bought a pack of Rhodesian SAS from Under Fire Miniatures, I have done head swaps and based them.
I have used Empress Miniatures wooly hat heads, it is a bit colder in Europe.
Now waiting for the weather to warm up so I can undercoat them, and eventually paint them.
-
Cool, those heads work very well.
-
Really nice conversion work!

They are going to be lightly armed troops with mixed weapons.

Now to finish the other three.

As mentioned before, they are four Under Fire Miniatures Rhodesian SAS modified using Empress Miniatures wooly hat heads.

Whatever nationality they started out as, they have boosted their firepower with two Soviet RPD drum fed LMGs.

With an Empress T90 (not strictly speaking a valid Twilight 2000 vehicle I would say it is a T74 - improved T72).

The marauders look great, the heads work very well.

Two vehicles in a year, my progress improves...
Except this is not finished yet.

Empress T55 tank - nearly finished.
It needs the restraining straps for the fuel drums and the unditching beam (peer carefully and you might spot the rod that will hold the latter in place).
Plus an improvement in the weather to allow spray painting.

Here is the Empress T55 painted as a Tier three tank in the Twilight War.

This has none of the upgrades that would have been on Tier Two vehicles, but by this point if it moves and shoots it went to the front.

It is awaiting the fitting of the unditching beam.

Nice work. Glad to see this project reappear - I'm about to get my hobby space back so I think my 90's kit is going to jump up the pecking order once a couple of bits started pre-kitchen renovation have been polished off, especially seeing as the beta pdf of 4th ed should drop next month...

Nice colour green and good weathering. ;)

Great work mate! Brings back some old memories.

This has been a bit dormant for a while (two and a half years), but...
After "One Thing and Another", and before the current unpleasantness, Empress released a range of Cold War Soviet Paratroopers as opposition to their BAOR British infantry. I ordered them back in February (2023). So they do not have to walk very far, and to give them some punch, here is the Empress BMD-1.

With William Killian for scale.
It is not finished, there is some extensive weathering to finish (it has just forged a river with muddy banks).

The cables are brass wire, the wire ends are inserted into holes drilled in the hull. The end of the wire is covered with Rubicon cable ends. The end opposite to the loop is hollow and it covers the end of the wire.

Thanks to Paul at Empress for getting me back into gear.
Now I have to start on the VDV (and the rest of the backlog). Oh, and there is Salute on Saturday...

There's some good stuff in this thread. Looking forward to seeing that BMD done - but it looks good so far!
-
Nice work mate - v.tidy job - I do love the Empress BMD :)
-
Some very nice stuff in there; very enticing to be honest.
I'm running a T2K campaign right now. I got the urge to do so after pledging on the Kickstarter for the reboot of the game. I must say the new system works pretty well, although it's more book keeping than my group was used to.
From the start I've told both my group and myself that there will not be any miniatures with this campaign. The new boxed set provided me with sturdy tokens and nice map sections for each encounter, and they've been more than adequate so far.
But then I've had this beginning of a Dutch force for Team Yankee stashed for years, so I finally caved and started on that. And now I find this thread and ideas of 28mm minis are starting to percolate.
You know; just the PC's, some NPC's, and some generic OPFOR. But then I would also need their vehicle, and something to oppose that. And then some terrain to go with the minis, and, and, and... ::) :D
Great thread, but I'm doing my very best to remain a spectator when it comes to this scale and period... ;)
