Title: Ahistorian's ][nq28 - update (inc painting!) 14/01
Post by: Ahistorian on January 17, 2018, 11:07:36 AM
I got back into GW last summer, and have spent most of my hobby time since then converting rather than painting - a shame really, since I hate playing with unpainted models.

Anyway, I'm starting a thread for my various Inq28 conversions. I hope you like them! Stories will follow in due course as I paint up the various factions.

First off, an Explorator Magos and some of his various minions!

Crow Legion veteran guardsman. This one-eyed sniper was valuable enough to the Emperor's cause that when he lost his arms to a Chaos cult's improvised explosive device, he was gifted bionic arms by the Militarum. But he refused ocular bionics because of his deeply held religious beliefs, beliefs which assured him that eyes were the first part of the soul, and that to replace one with crude metal would be to scar his eternal being and risk never being admitted into the Emperor's light. Now he carries his father's sniper rifle to war under the auspices of the Inquisition. Emperor save those lined up in his scope.

"What does this Lania Brule have to say for herself, Handers?"

"Nothing, Ecclesiarch."

"Nothing!?"

"Sir, she has taken a vow of silence. I don't know the particulars, but I understand she failed an abjuration against a powerful witch and is punishing herself."

"Self-flagellation is rather unseemly for an Inquisitor, don't you think?"

"Ahem."

"What? How can we trust them to be doing what's right for the Imperium if they don't trust themselves?"

"Ahem, sir."

"Ah, Inquisatrix! You honour us with your presence. And who is this... unsettling young woman? Weapons, as I'm sure the guards told you, are not allowed on Ecclesiarchial grounds."

"Inquisatrix. Formal greetings to you and your familiars."

"Where's your Tech-Adept, eh? I hear he's something of an outcast, failed his rites of knowledge or something. Damned luacky to get out of the Adeptus alive in my book, eh Handers? Handers, what's all this finger-flicking."

"Battle sign, sir."

"Good grief, is that one carrying a power sword?"

"She signs it's for when things get serious sir."

"Really?"

"Yes ma'am. I served with the Penitent Crusade in the Venatain System. Twenty years under the Aquila with pride."

"So the sign of the Aquila is the same in battle sign too? Fascinating. What else does she have to say for herself?"

"That I should... take the shot?"

"What in the Emperor's name are you talking about Handers?!"

"OH MY SWEET EMPEROR!"

-----'
Here is my latest warband, made in a single evening - Inquisatrix Lania Brule and her associates. She has taken a vow of silence, and over the years has chosen to surround herself with mutes and quiet warriors. Included in her retinue (in order of introduction) are the witchseeker known only as Siostra, three combat servitors (my favourite has an electro-flail and suppression shield), Tech-Adept Brysen Kallos (who is in fact a very lowly apprentice Tech-Priest who ran away to learn about the galaxy) the servitor who bears the Inquisatrix's power sword, and finally her sniper, the mysterious assassin whose battle sign is Hunter.

The Pirate Queen Zhan Aiya who started off this thread along with Bosun Young and a few peons now has the rest of her crew.

Twenty years ago, she seized control of the Rogue Trader cruiser Far Darkness, and set out to burn herself an empire amongst the stars. But the Rogue Trader survived her assault and has led a guerrilla insurgency within the ship since then, determined to retake his ancestral home. Now Zhan Aiya, her brother Zhan Zhay and their crew launch punitive raids into the depths of the Far Darkness, trying to extend their control into its ratruns and hallways in between attacks on unprotected worlds and shipping.

Zhan Zhay is bionically augmented, a proud warrior who has strayed into arrogance since raising the runesword his sister gave him. Whether it is Khorne's martial pride or Slaanesh's perfectionism that drives him, he is a swift and lethal fighter.

Like their masters, the Far Darkness's new crewmen all hide their faces behind inhuman masks, and carry all sorts of weapons to war as they battle the ship's old master and its new prey.

Cool thread! These are some great ideas you've come up with! Converting is my favourite part of the hobby, and I'm also on a Confrontation/Inq28 buzz. So I will be following this thread! The new Elves for AoS have some great potential too, don't you think? I can see those serpentine bodies being used a lot in Blanchitsu-style warbands.

One piece of constructive criticism, if you want it: maybe shorten the necks on a couple of the sigmarite-head crewmen? It might just be the angle, but those necks seem kinda long.

The Zhan conversion is amazing!

Thank you!

I think so, yes. I'm very much looking forward to their release, particularly the winged ones - I think they'd make great Corsairs.

I think it's the angle of the photos - on the modelling table they don't look wrong, but I have to position minis strangely for them to come into focus in my flat's funny light.

Zhan Zhay is in my top 3 favourite conversions, most definitely!

Well thank you for letting me win  ;)

While trying to work out what to replace van Brule's power maul with, I made a few more pieces. Firstly, a wizened old Ordo Hereticus inquisitor, and his mutant sidekick - an eight-kit homage to Dante from the Inquisitor rulebook.

Then the Forester, recently brought into Inquisitorial service for his skills with the civilian one-shot laslock. If anyone has an idea of how/where to fit a scope, that would be appreciated. And an Assassin, whose head slipped while drying and will need a touch of greenstuff.

Finally, an Astartes of the First Legion, a Dark Angel of Death, a hunter of things that hide in the shadows. What purpose he truly serves is unknown, but he is as brusque and dangerous to servants of the Emperor as he is to his more obvious prey. Primarily fighting with an ancient and monstrous plasma pistol (guide below), he also bears a bolt pistol and a sheathed sword. None have lived to tell what happens when he draws it...

I'm not sure whether he's an Unforgiven or a Fallen yet, but he's definitely a warband in his own right!

My latest Inq28 after a period spent focusing on Stormcast - a fireteam of rather ornate Imperial troopers, who might still get extra belt-gubbins. Greatsword legs, hostile environment Cadian heads/torsos, and mostly Scion arms. Inspired in no small part by Ryltar Thamior, who very graciously gave permission to steal ;)

Surprisingly close on the heels of Inquisatrix Lania Brule comes Inquisitor Daniel Talion of the Ordo Xenos, armed with heavy calibre pistol, Aeldari spear and kroot skinning knife. Accompanying him are the survivors of his mission into the space hulk - Sergeant Borj Castellan, Troopers Malik and Thorn, and Rogue Trader Sikander Marceau. The estimable trader now thoroughly regrets having given the inquisitor passage - all talk of treasure and fortune have evaporated among the deaths of most of his crew... And finally of course, Brother Galhuk of the Deathwatch, one of only 3 Astartes in my wider Inq28 collection and the first to get a coat of paint.

Thanks Johannus!

Next up, treasure hunter Aranaea Jones and her sidekick Hobbler. Rumoured to be half-Eldar, she is definitively one of the best people to hire if you want to get yourself some archaeotech from the deeps beneath your Hive.

Although I trimmed her ears, the blue-and-yellow colours hopefully evoke the old-school Alaitoc appearance of RT Eldar. Hobbler is just my 40k take on the halfling thief archetype.

Many more conversions today!

First up, my first truly and obviously radical Inquisitor, as yet unnamed. I intend to paint him with white armour trimmed in gold and a rich red cloak, as though he doesn't yet realise that he has fallen. To accompany him, some converted minions, including a chemthrower and a priest - all of whom are equally oblivious to their spiritual trajectory

On the side of order, if not strictly the law, the Sump Town Regulators, semi-official enforcers of the whims of local bigwigs.

An imperial agent next, armed with a bolt pistol, powerfist, sword and dagger. I think he looks like an inquisitor or interrogator, my friend AGPO as though he is an Arbites officer - what do you guys think?

A random bounty hunter, a simple headswap on an Orlock gunslinger
(https://i.imgur.com/bGaKdXQ.jpg?1)

And finally, the mercenary outfit tactfully known as the Seven Dwarves.

A commission today, to pay a friend back for a box of Goliaths he handed over to me. An Underhive bounty hunter armed with bolt pistol and chainsword. The purity seal on his shoulder is his commission from the Governor's office, a certificate and badge of office proving he is more than a mere vigilante - instead, a ganger made good! Despite his illiteracy, he is prone to tapping it and demanding his interlocutors "Ree 'dis"; he's confident enough in his abilities to try talking before the screaming starts!

First, the hedge-knight of Spyrers, a poor scion of an uphive fmaily trying to earn a reputation in the sumps.

The next retinue to get painted, which will be my first Contrast Blanchitsu creation. Also a close-up  of the arco-flagellant, a simple conversion from a Blackstone Fortress electro-cultist. I don't have a name for any of them yet.

A Tau Ethereal, corrupted by his time among the gue'la, using its pheromones in the Underhive. He was going to be a Delaque witch until my fiancée said he should be an alien wizard and referenced Voldemort...

Naval Commandos, led by an officer in a leather greatcoat. 3 shotguns and a flamer, the sergeant has a hellpistol and is (purely accidentally) in the perfect pose to see the Ethereal looking down on him.

An interrogator, a Crusader, a Vindicare, and an Acolyte with storm bolter (I hear they're popular).

My version of Inquisitor Covenant. Looking forward to trying to put together the rest of his retinue from similarly spare parts.

And finally, my first Inq28 vehicle. Planned for over a year, I finally assembled it in just a couple of hours this week. I'm going to be soaking it in washes and Contrast over a silver spray to get a really grimy look to it.

Some more really cool work there, keep up the good effort.  I may take some inspiration from shamelessly steal some of those ideas.  My one observation, which is a pet peeve of mine, is that the muzzles would benefit from being drilled out a bit.

Please do steal!

I used to drill them out, but I just can't be bothered any more. Being ill, I have only limited energy and prefer to spend it building. I should get a barrel imp...

Big fan of your work here, I do some N40k gaming myself and will be taking plenty of inspiration from your work here.

Also converted my own speeder variant:

Some new bits now, and proof that I do occasionally put paint to brush!

First and worst, a conversion of an old Goliath figure to clear space in the bitzbox. I guess he's some sort of gladiator?

Second, a gunslinging bounty hunter and deserter from the Imperial Guard. I've since removed the aquila on his breastplate to match the wings missing from his helmet. Quite pleased with the mashup of Scion shoulders and Orlock arms.

Third, Phal ad-Deen, who wishes he was a paladin. Clearly part of an Inquisitorial retinue given the holy flamer he bears.

Fourth, what happens when the Enforcers need support? Being of Irish heritage and distrusting the Imperium's oppression of the people, I assume some sort of Auxiliary Detachment. Hence this Underhive patrol of monstrous "police cadets". No need to take the politics any further than these allusions please, the models came from a bit of craic with a mate.

Next, characters.

Yazid Binzar didn't get to where he was today by shirking! Of course, he didn't get there through an honest day's work either. No, Yazid believes in working smart... and in the shadows. He is now an asset to several competing Inquisitors, all of whom have helped fund his social and political aspirations. Emperor save him when the hammer falls, but until then, he'll keep on living the good life.

Rasheed Triceon, third of his clan, is the youngest and most alive of three brothers. Squeezing his slight hunch into their father's exo-armour, he now leads the ragged remnants of his fleet in search of new worlds to conquer, hoping he can strike it lucky before his Warrant ceases to cool his crew's discontent.

My second Inq28 vehicle is much heftier than the first! This is an Inquisitorial urban riot-mobile, inspired by Judge Dredd and the Russian BMPT Terminator. It has a turret-mounted missile launcher and hotshot volley gun, hull-mounted hotshot volley gun and heavy flamer, two dorsal grenade launchers and three smoke launchers for maximum enemy confusion. Two face the rear to cover the occupants' exit under fire. Unlike most Chimeras, it only takes 6 passengers, because it has a small cell inside for miscreants (as hinted at by the window on its right-hand side.

Finally, a WIP of my first Contrast/Blanchitsu warband. It isn't as fast or as fun as I had hoped, but I have learned valuable lessons for the next set.

The female marine heads are 3rd party, everything else if GW, I'm pretty sure.

A few randoms to begin with: a doomladen scavvie, an acolyte that thinks it's a Knight, a kick-ass lady, an Underhive monster, and an Underhive monster touched by Chaos.

Next some Blackstone Fortress conversions. The priest has been slightly de-glammed, and will now be a rabble-rousing preacher lurching around the Underhive. How does he stay that plump..? One of the ratlings has had a super-simple barrel-swap, and some Chaos gubbins attached round back to replace the bipod and boxes that used to be there - he'll be in someone's retinue, most likely Triseon's. And then Draik got head and hand swaps to represent an older, wiser Cleander von Castellan in the service of Inquisitor Covenant (see further up). I also clipped the pistol-grip out from his holster for verisimilitude (yes, I cleaned the burrs off his fingers once the photo ID'd them!).

Since the opening of the Cicatrix Maledictum, Inquisitor Gan Xilai is, as his name suggests, without hope. Clad in a simple pilgrim's cloak, he and his retinue are riding the starways back towards Terra in the hopes that communion with or near the Throne might reveal some desperately needed answer. He is guarded by his chief lieutenant, ex-drop trooper Hima Flowers, and his personal arco-flagellant, X1138. With them are the hive ganger Jyeo Mhar, and the Guard veterans Kehume the medic and Fragell the bionic man. They have formed a bond in the heaving, hellish depths of the pilgrim ships, and now work to further the Inquisitor's aims.

I've learned some things about working with Contrast from these guys, namely to block your starter colours (especially metal) down before you start lashing on the Contrast, and to work lightest upwards (derp). I will have to plan more ahead of time with the scavvies and Ratskins due up next on my painting table. Sharp-eyed viewers may notice that I reversed my usual basing colours and drybrushed the metal planking on this retinue. This was an attempt to show that Xilai isn't lurking in the depths of some hive like the others are, while still tying them into my collection's aesthetic.
