Post by: c12 on February 09, 2018, 08:45:16 AM
Hello there gentlemen,

Here's an introduction article for Congo. It is in French though, but has pretty pictures nevertheless.
I did not write it, my gaming partner did.

Enjoy your day good people!

maybe i should read, better try it before commenting..but from what i read in this article i will never buy it...it seem more a type of childish / fantasy game that an historical/colonial one based on research and true accounts of Colonial campaigns ...and even the use of ostentatious, unenecessary,  supposed to be african therms "kirangozi" ????  :o :( instead of appropriate and above all understandable English therms make me laugh..
no thanks! i've already the very good TSATF in my library.

I suppose you mean 'pulpy' rather than childish ? I think childish is a bit of a derogatory term.

I would not call it fantasy either, for me that's more D&D.

The game never claimed to be anything else than that and always announced exactly this.

It's quite funny that some would seek to create a hierarchy of the childish and non-childish within a hobby where everyone is playing army with toy soldiers.  :)

Italwars, Congo isn't really a rule set for recreating historic battles, and doesn't claim to be. The European force in the game represents explorers rather than colonizers, and the games only really depict the kind of small scale skirmishes they might have encountered. I think it is a fun system, myself, and yes, I think it is suited to more pulpy-style action stories than historical battles. I plan to use it for Rider Haggard style adventure stories in the Quatermain mould, as I am a massive fan of those books, which contain both historical elements and some that are fantastical, but I don't think that makes them childish.

There's room for all kinds of game here. All are welcome, from serious folks with a more academic studious bent, right through to folks who like to wear silly hats and make all the gun noises while they play.

Of course there is room for everybody..but from what i read ..this game is not colonial wargame rule systhem.and probably not even a simulation of explorers deeds..but a fantasy/pulp one..and when i read this article i'm entitled to qualify it childish  and happy to laugh

If that photo at the beginning of the group crossing a rickety bridge is representative of the scenery in the game, I can't wait to see more.

Actually the article is a review of the game system in French.  Part one of three is a good overview but nothing that isn't available in English elsewhere.  Sadly no game - at least in the first part.  :'(

Seconded, Sir Douglas! That's a beauty!

It's very much a 'pulp' or role playing game. Not a historical set.
It's also one of the best and most fun set of rules I've played in years. Not in the least childish. Just a really good game.

Rules?  Don't much care.  Figures?  Nicely painted.  Playing with toys?  Guilty.  That bridge photo?  Have we seen it before?  Yes or no, it is one of the prettiest wargaming photos I've ever seen in 30 plus years.  Gorgeous Gorge.

And it even has a crittergator.

if you are after a historical set covering African exploration (and the Zulu War, Sudan, etc), then 'Death in the Dark Continent' is excellent, and includes superb historical background as well as every African tribe and colonial power you can imagine.
But you won't get your troops being attacked by feces-throwing monkeys or tse-tse flies as you do in Congo.

I've never played CONGO, but reading the rules and some reviews on the web I can say it looks like a very clever, well designed and FUN game! What more can one ask for?

And let's keep in mind that the AWESOME website that inspired generations of gamers - the classical Major General Tremorden Rederring’s Colonial-era Wargames Page - is a very serious Colonial Wargaming site with dinosaurs, tribal sorcerers and wondrous machines...  ;)

The picture is the same one from the back of the rulebook, I think. There are also other shots of the same piece of terrain within, if memory serves.

Hallo,

Congo is one of the best skirmish and "fun" game I ever played in my Lllloooonnng playing life.
Each time we played it (even with the same scenario) we finish with an other result, and... one of the best evening game we had !
Short (maximum 1h30) and VERY interresting game (even if only the theme is realy historical !!!)

Thank to Tomahawk studio for this excellent game !

Jacques (who like very much this game)

Thank you Jacques.
I hope, you'll like the other scenarios.
