Title: Little Whiskey - The Story Continues 8th May but doesn't end well
Post by: Vagabond on February 17, 2018, 05:30:53 PM
This is a sort of follow on to a game I posted about a year ago on this board but is now on my blog here

https://vagabondswargamingblog.blogspot.co.uk/2018/01/big-iron-western-adventure.html (https://vagabondswargamingblog.blogspot.co.uk/2018/01/big-iron-western-adventure.html)

It was set in Montana but the story has now headed south to New Mexico.

You may have seen my complete western town, well these are the stories behind the building of Little Whiskey.

This is Little Whiskey - New Mexico, it was in it’s infancy back then, just a Way Station on the stage route, but it was to grow fast. Whiskey Jack was the driving force behind the growth. So far there's only two buildings the Saloon and Livery but the lumber's arrived for a third one already.

That’s Whiskey Jack talking to his barman Ruben White, Jack is the one with the bottle in one hand and the sawn off shotgun in the other. He maintains it keeps his customers happy, well it keeps them quiet and that keeps Jack happy which is pretty much the same thing.

Jack had tried a similar venture in Wyoming you may have heard about it, but the weather, well the weather up north was not the same as here in New Mexico, he liked the feel of the sun on his face rather than that cold biting wind.
The outlaws in Wyoming were a little bolder then New Mexico, that's what he thought then, poor and bold was a very bad combination if you were a businessman trying to make a living just skirting around the law a little yourself.

Then the stage route through the Desperate Mountains was closed for three months due to snow and the final straw was the night an oil lamp was thrown through the window of the still unfinished saloon and the whole place went up in flames. It was time to move on.
There's a story there for the telling of the Great Fire of Big Whiskey if someone is brave or foolhardy enough to recount it but you'll not be hearing it from me.

His Wells Fargo contact had been transferred south so Jack went too and they pulled the same stunt, in New Mexico, Jack provided the Way Station and his contact provided the routing of the stages, a beneficial and profitable scam for both of them.

Here is Big Jim Smith he runs the smithy and looks after the horses, changes them when the stage comes in, in fact he does everything except run the bar. He works for Jack, but doesn’t like it. He came south with Jack but he didn’t like that either.

This could be why, but no one dares to ask!

Many folks round here think this is Jack’s best side, and you don’t want to get on the wrong side of him.

On the right is Ebenezer Douglas or Mr Douglas as he prefers to be called. He has his fingers in many pies, not all of them savoury which is why he is known behind his back as “Sweet Sticky Fingers”. He is inspecting the delivery of lumber that will be used for the next building in Little Whiskey, it will become the local Wells Fargo Office and bank. The stage coaching business is booming in New Mexico, although there won’t be a need for a bank yet because no one has any money. Whiskey Jack and Mr Douglas see to that.

He is talking to Marshall MacAlister who is just passing through on his way to the territorial capital, Mac is pretty much the only law in the Territory that has any jurisdiction in this area. There is a long standing enmity between these two men although neither will say why, there is some rumour of a woman but no one really knows.

Three unshaven desperado’s emerge from the rocks and scrub to the east of the way station heading towards the Tail Feathers Saloon.

Sorry - make that two unshaven desperado’s who are led by Alice Morgan one of the toughest outlaws around these parts.

Alice, Nasty Nick and Charlie Foster some times known as Lefty (you’ll have to work it out) are moving quickly to the saloon, they must be in need of a cooling drink after committing whatever crime they’ve been up to.

Rose is oblivious to them and Jim probably doesn’t care.

Ruben is just saying to his Boss – “Boss there’s someone coming” when Alice pulls her pistol and quietly tells Jack that they have business inside, and would he like to move into the saloon, - please!

He passes his Brains test and does the sensible thing and agrees.

Marshall MacAlister sees what is happening but fails to act, however Rose sees what is going on and starts to move to the saloon, did I say she drives the stage for Wells Fargo and moonshines for Whiskey Jack, she likes to look after her employer, especially if there's anything likely to interfere with payday.

She moves behind the illusory shelter of the veranda post and asks Jack if everything is ok. He says yes it’s OK but is wondering what Alice is playing at, - she has failed her activation again - 2nd time and is just looking menacing, quite lovely but menacing as well.

Mac the Marshall finally comes over and in a calm voice says “you’d better put them guns away we don’t want any trouble”. Alice and Nick are confused, not sure what to do but Charlie is cool. “It’s ok Marshall we just want a word with Jack here, don’t mean no harm”.

Alice now fails her guts test and is going to go along with Charlie but Nick has been drinking and spins round. “What do you want - you stinking lawman” and it all happens in a flash.

Nick, Mac and Rose all go for the shot at the same time, Mac and Rose miss but Nick doesn’t and the Marshall is on the ground, gut shot. Every one tests their reaction - Alice and Charlie keep their guns on Jack and he stays very still.

Nick felt the shotgun blast and a big Boom from behind him and spins around again.

Rose has time and fires first, just a fraction of a second before Nick but she misses with the 2nd barrel of the shotgun. Nick fires and doesn’t miss, Rose drops to the ground, hit in the right arm but it’s bad, there’s lots of blood.

It’s all over in a split second and the two guy’s are down - injured badly.

Indeed the Marshall appears dead and this is his first time on the table. He’s going to have to man up if he’s to make the grade in New Mexico.

Alice backs Jack and Ruben into the bar and explains what it’s all about.

To be continued...........

Very good John. I love the idea of tracking the development of the town through a series of games; neat idea.

Little Whiskey looks like the kind of no account town that Rhode Island Red and the Free Range Boys would find most congenial to spend some time in😉

Nice to know that Alice has had a shave too.

Oh, and those clear bases work so well that the Marshall looks like he is levitating when he has been shot.

Watch out Little Whiskey if those no 'count chicken -livered killers mosey on into the Tail Feathers Saloon. It could be a nasty business!

Sometimes they have this deja-vu feeling that they’ve already been there in another life; another time.

Oh, the tales of vagrants and 'vagabonds'.  Well done, including part two.  My personal favorite part is that you actually have a team of horses waiting to relieve the team on the stage - or to be stolen.  Also like all the clutter about town.  If we may allow bit of speculation as to the next structure, perhaps an undertakers establishment, seems rather a lot of business developing locally.

She likes to look her best before a gunfight. I think that the Marshall is maybe ascending to heaven not levitating - but it's similar.  :D

You are only upset that your lawmen couldn't uphold the law.  ;)

In a rough tough town like Little Whiskey they either put the bodies in the beer barrels to give it a little more flavour, :o or leave them where they are for the dogs to eat. Which is probably why there are so many dead bodies laying about because there are no dogs yet, still in the paint queue.  :'(

The next business to be built is what every boom town needs, and it goes up tomorrow.

Cheers mate - I always like it when you're enthusiastic, unlike when you tell me it's crap and won't read it.  lol lol lol

Vampifan was right about the next building going up in town, but the ladies of the night didn't arrive on the last stage so you might not be interested.

This is the opening to the game:-

A Western Adventure - Big Trouble in Little Whiskey

When the Insurance man comes calling in Little Whiskey you'd better have the money to pay him or alternatively a big gun and lots of ammunition, preferably with some amigo's to back your play.

The town is booming and Little Whiskey is growing at an amazing rate, another new building has been erected in record time and to the right of it there is the lumber for yet another one. There’s money to be made out west, if only in the haulage and building trades.

Whiskey Jack has decided to take out a Building and Contents Insurance Policy on the Tail Feathers Saloon and these four are it.

Alice De Witt likes to keep her Henry .44 carbine close but her Colt Navy closer still, next to her is Texas Red who hopefully you will have encountered before, a young lady who is building a reputation for getting shot as well as a reputation for getting back up afterwards.
Then there is J.J. Tucker late of the Arizona Rangers, he quit after that fracas up in Montana and now he is making a living as best he can, he remains faithful to his twin Walker's Colts, old fashioned, impossibly slow to load but getting shot with them is like being run over by a train.
The fourth man you met briefly in the last episode, drinking in the bar, Mississippi Sam Shaw who hails from Missouri (same joke as last time but I didn't hear anyone laugh) He carries twin Colts but has a liking for a short barrelled double barrelled shotgun pistol, quite an unusual gun.

Every time I say it's crap because of the non-clear bases and I won't read it means you must read between the lines!  ;)

I'm on a roll with playing western games that are loosely based on the building of the town of Little Whiskey. This is the latest.

A Western Adventure - Gunfight in Little Whiskey

The town is growing apace and Rob ‘Slim’ Tilney has just opened his gun shop. In such a lawless place he is bound to make a killing! Perhaps I mean – bound to make a lot of money.

Slim on his front porch, viewing his new home town and wondering if he will settle here, unlike the previous, well countless places he has tried before.

A close up of the back of previous new building in town – the Westmoreland Grocery Company Store. The business occupying the top floor is Blond Edna’s Saloon and Brothel. Edna has not arrived in town yet, but she has sent on her old signs from the previous business which was very successful - until the pox hit town, her girls died and so did her customers. She doesn’t advertise this fact – but that’s marketing for you.

Over in the coral Jim is also in deep conversation with Shawnee Mary, he does seem to have some attraction for good looking women, could it be that big bushy beard or the pot belly, tricky!!!

Stepping out into the centre of the street Joe drawls “I think we have a little business to settle here – don’t you hombre”?

If you think this might interest you the full story is on my blog

If not thanks for reading so far.

Thanks to the pair of you, very much appreciate the encouragement.

Dino - CinC, it's not the sequel that I want to get on with, it's the sequel to the sequel, there are about 20 figures I painted a year ago and so far they have never made it to the table.

Messieur L'Vagabond, sir,

I have a variety of rather serious issues to raise with you - and I expect substantial support by the other denizens in this thread, too.

The litany:

Your posts regarding Little Whiskey are exceedingly scant in their number and this needs to be rectified.

In addition, the posts are separated by excessive lags of temporal wastage betwixt one another.  This, too, needs to be rectified.

And - the horror, sir, the horror - you've intimidated that you will be soon done with the building of Little Whiskey.  That is a travesty, Messieur, that ought not be allowed to stand.  How can this be fixed?  You must expand onto yet another stand of terrain, sir.  You must.  Such a calamity must be avoided.  It must.

Why, you may wonder?  Tis but a simple answer, sirrah, a simple point of fact.

Where else can we go to get our fix of Little Whiskey's ever growing and mysteriously entertaining construction?

I anticipate a like minded chorus to sound off on this matter, sir, I most certainly do.

Please to start the contemplation of that additional board - where you will be expected to display your renewed efforts in the world of adobe-fication.

No excuses will be tolerated, Messieur.  Your audience would be horribly, horribly, sir, disappointed.

Rant - temporarily - concluded.    ;)

A LAF star is being born here before our very eyes and having shared a table with this gentleman - both wargame and victuals - I can state no-one deserves it less more :).

Little Whiskey 🥃 is a must-read thread and most comforting entertainment as we cower before the combined wrath of The Beast From The East and Storm Emma.

Little Whiskey but lots of calvados, eh, John?

Dino you have an amazing memory, I look through some threads on here and think hell that's good, and then part way down the thread I find my icon and me saying, hell that's good, and I can't remember saying it. :'(

FifteensAway  I'm sorry I just don't have space for another board, so when it's done, it's done.
These buildings were originally just intended to be temporary refurbishments of old buildings I already had, I just wanted to get on and play games. My intention was to replace them as and when time allowed with coffee stirrer buildings but I don't think that will happen any time soon because like most of us, new ideas keep popping up and there's only a limited amount of time.
I'm off to Japan via the stone age, I think.
Blonde Edna may need an extension built or the girls will be having to hot bed because there are three of them and only one bed. ;)

Vampifan and Doug, cheers.

Well, then, I guess we'll just have to look forward to all the scenarios once the building is done, won't we?

Not that I'm not terribly and horribly disappointed and may need to drown my sorrows - with a Little Whiskey!   lol

My last missive was an homage to your wonderful efforts - and the enjoyment we're all getting from and, like any really good story, we don't want it to end.
Title: Re: Little Whiskey - The Skull Rock Holdup
Post by: Vagabond on April 07, 2018, 05:33:44 PM
Well it's been over a month since the last game but I'm back in the saddle, well actually on the Stagecoach into Little Whiskey.

A Western Adventure - Hold Up At Skull Rock

Bill intends to rob the Stage going to Little Whiskey, his plan is to jump out in front of it and yell for it to stop. Well good luck with that plan Bill.

He was never the shiniest spoon in the drawer, direct action was more his forte and this plan reflected years of perfecting his preferred method of stagecoach robbery. That’s what he told his men and they were very dull spoons compared to Bill and believed him.

In fact this was his first stage hold up and he was not really sure how to go about it, but practice makes perfect so they say.
Unless you get shot to death at which point it sort of stops there.

Here is the stage jolting along the main road to Little Whiskey, road is a bit of a misnomer as you can see, it’s just a dirt track, mostly clear of boulders and brush, but this is what passes for fast communication out west at this time.

The Stage is being driven today by Chester because Rose is having a day off.

I know he could do with reins to the horses but that involves a lot of work so just imagine the stage bouncing along, the dust, the heat and the lack of space inside and then you will have forgotten the lack of reins.

Riding shotgun is English Bob you may remember him from the last episode in Little Whiskey he still has the star but it’s under his big coat and he’s grown a moustache.

Undertaker Haulage Company have employed a young boy, a kid really, Henry McCarty to run a mule train bringing supplies into town, so far he only has one horse in his mule train but the west is expanding as is the mule train. For some reason he’s always been known as Billy, maybe he didn’t like his given name of Henry.

As usual a general overview of the board, the Stage has to exit this end of the table, or maybe even turn round and go back, it doesn’t really matter because the losers are the ones who are dead and the winners are the ones who aren’t.

I like to keep my winning conditions simple. None of this 5points for this plot point, 3 points for that one. You are either dead or alive, this is the wild west after all.

Nick here has been delegated to hold the horses. I think this is because he is developing quite a name as a gun man and Bill doesn’t like the competition.

He is also wearing a new duster, I really didn’t like the army painter quick shade and have tried to lighten it without doing a complete re-paint only partially successful but quick to do.

I hope you have noticed the cactus, and if not why not. I don’t know if I've mentioned this but I've been doing stuff with DAZ and this is some of it. It's not the best in the world but it is cheap.

Well this is the opening to the latest game I've posted on the blog, if you're interested click here https://vagabondswargamingblog.blogspot.co.uk/2018/04/a-western-adventure-hold-up-at-skull.html (https://vagabondswargamingblog.blogspot.co.uk/2018/04/a-western-adventure-hold-up-at-skull.html)

Otherwise thanks for reading so far
Cheers

My tongue been a might parched the last month from lack of any doses of "Whiskey".  About time you got back to it.  Withdrawal is no fun, no it isn't.  Now I'm off to follow the link to the game.

Alrighty, then, I'm back post-game perusal.  Properly entertaining if rather a lot of poorly dressed 'damsels'.

Oh, and, yes, I did notice the 'frosted' cacti and they look nice though I'm left to wonder about a few odd greenish blobs here and there on the board.  Skull rock was pretty cool.

Now, don't make us all wait so long for our next 'drink'!

Not sure how, but I managed to miss this thread ...

Top modelling and narrative - looking forward to more "Little Whiskey"

Wonderful stuff, as usual, sir.
I do love your write ups!

I notice that you have been making a lot of your own scenery and would like to take the opportunity to recommend that you give DAS clay a go.
You may find it useful......

I deem your next stories will be quite spicy when they will be involved!
Inexplicably, I bet all my money on Dr. Watson, he's quite a character!

FifteensAway that's a long time between sips of whiskey  :D

That's damn good advice - you know what - I think I'll give it a whirl.  ;)

who makes the stage driver and shotgun?
I got them from Col Bill, 6 in a set, if you look at my latest post today

https://vagabondswargamingblog.blogspot.co.uk/2018/04/western-adventure-law-comes-to-little.html (https://vagabondswargamingblog.blogspot.co.uk/2018/04/western-adventure-law-comes-to-little.html)

You should with a bit of searching find 4 of them, no gold star if you succeed. ;)
I need a horse and buggy for the other 2 as they're a bit posh. Any ideas for a buggy?

Din my next post was to be an introduction to the girls but I started to show the town and the rest of the new inhabitants and the post got longer and longer and I just ran out of time.
If they survive the next episode I will surely introduce them properly.
Cheers

Sir, in your search for Americanisms like "front porch", or stoop in the Appalachian country maybe, I'd like to offer the following two terms as possible descriptions of, well, you.  You are a catamount of a polecat, sir.  Yes, sir.  And you can take that as a compliment!  Well, maybe that description might be better reserved for one of those innocent lasses serving broth - I'm guessing there's some meat in that broth, too.   lol

After nearly a month I finally got to play out the game The Law Comes To Little Whiskey. These are just a couple of incidents from the game.

With the thud of hooves on the hard packed desert highway, the Little Whiskey stage thunders in to town, its roof covered in strongboxes full of silver from the local mine. Chester who is driving, wipes the sweat from his brow, is it the hot desert sun or just relief that the first stage of this journey has passed without incident, even he’s not sure which.

He’s looking forward to a lukewarm beer in the Tail Feather Saloon followed by broth in the new brothel that’s recently opened in town, ahh the joys of civilised living, all the comforts of home he thinks. Mind you he usually sleeps in the livery stable and washes once a week in the horse trough.

However Big Jim has installed a pump that provides fresh (brackish) water, so now he doesn’t get too much straw mixed in with his beard afterwards. If only Jim had made the trough bigger, Chester could save the 10cents that Whiskey Jack charges for the use of the Bathhouse, although Bathhouse is a bit of a misnomer. It’s a bathtub round the back of the saloon, there is no ‘house’ to it, but the girls in the brothel stop serving broth to the smelliest customers in the height of the summer so needs must when the devil drives.

Drunken Donna makes it to the other side without falling over, what a constitution that girl has, she stares at the door into the office and like all drunks the world over thinks “why am I here, what did I come for, who am I” to which the universal answer is “I’ll have another drink and see if it becomes any clearer”

Pans back to get an overview of the situation, Billy and the coach are at loggerheads, Chester needs to get close to the Bank at the far end of town to unload his valuable shipment but Billy who is a stubborn young man has carried on down the street after his contretemps with Irene earlier and does not want to give way a second time.

"You’re on the wrong side of the road" says Chester – "No I ain’t responds Billy". The man with no name, riding shotgun looks nervous.

If you think you might be interested in reading the rest it's here

Like all my reports it goes on, so maybe make a cup of tea first.

And if it doesn't interest you, thanks for getting this far.
Cheers

Love all those saddle horses at the hitching rails.  Little Whiskey must be the busiest town in the 'miniature' old west.  Why, there's all sorts of rustle to the bustle.  Speaking of rustle, where are the cattle?  Or were they scared away by the rattle of all that racket?

I fear it will be too long until we see Little Whiskey again - and that is a travesty.  May I be very wrong on that front!
