Title: Don's North West Frontier
Post by: DonVoss on March 10, 2018, 08:14:10 AM
Okay, after recovering my account thanx to the very helpful people behind the scenes, I want to share some of my NWF adventures with you.
I realized after playing Björns cool game at Tactica that I had to do something colonial again.

I first toyed with the idea to get myself some French Foreign Legion minis...but then again I remembered I had some painted afghans from the perrys laying around.
Just wanting to start something fairly small I just bought a box  of Perry plastic sudan/afghanistan Infantry....:)

So I just glued away and started to paint some khaki on the first minis.

Here is day 1.

And these are the minis I painted last year...and then got distrcted....;)

Thanx, Mr. Oshiro.....;)
Its good to be back...:)

Okay, in day 2 I started to use some super glue and greenstuff.
I wanted to do some Indian troops and found some WWII sikh metal heads in the leadpile. I know these are rather not correct, but I take a more cineastic aproach...so turban is erm turban....;)

(http://i.imgur.com/iSpxiLAl.jpg) (https://imgur.com/iSpxiLA)

And i oainted a colour party. These will acompany the Lt. as a 3 or 4 man team.

To get more afghans I tried some greenstuff on gripping beast dark age muslims and perry ansar.

So that was the update of day 3.
Ill try to get more pics in here.....;)

After paniting a few more Brits for the HWF...

(http://i.imgur.com/wT20Ay8l.jpg) (http://'https://imgur.com/wT20Ay8')

 I thought of some terrain...

Luckily some bad folks cut a lot of trees behind my flat. So I took up some of the spare parts of the trees....:)
And dryed them on the heater.

(http://i.imgur.com/KXoRDTFl.jpg) (https://imgur.com/KXoRDTF)

To get them flat on the tabletop I put some filler under neath.

(http://i.imgur.com/CeekFK9l.jpg) (https://imgur.com/CeekFK9)

And here with some grey paint on them.

(http://i.imgur.com/QoTpthLl.jpg) (https://imgur.com/QoTpthL)

...and with the next batch of afghans (this time Foundry). And an additional gun crew...:)

On day 5 I wanted some more terrain. This time a pathan watch tower.
Not as eleborate as the one from the great Jimbibbly, but more sketchy.....:)

(http://i.imgur.com/OzDZebVl.jpg) (https://imgur.com/OzDZebV)

And I had this stupid idea to get some scotts in my NWF....:)

I decided to use some Victrix spare parts wich I had laying around for a few years.....:)
Just the tropical hats on them and fo it goes....

(http://i.imgur.com/PEMcZxel.jpg) (https://imgur.com/PEMcZxe)

At thsi time the project was 5 days old. My benchmark was to get something playable in one week....
...even for me quite a task.... lol o_o ;D

Thanx gents....:)

Here is what I made on day 6.

First of, I builded a small hamlet. Just to get the afghans some cover....;)
Again pretty sketchy and done in a few hours. But I had only one day left in my weeks project.

(http://i.imgur.com/lTe0IGsl.jpg) (https://imgur.com/lTe0IGs)

Even managed to get some paint on the watchtower....;)

(http://i.imgur.com/gOEUm1Ll.jpg) (https://imgur.com/gOEUm1L)

And nearly finished the Victrix scratchbuild scots.

Thanx....;)

On day 7 of this little project **GS** was visiting Berlin, so we took the oportunity to get a little NWF game on the way.....:)
So I squeezed my plastik minis and some bark terain in my rucksack and headed to my university.

An old friend joined in so we were: DV vs. Lars plus **GS**.
I scratch build a small scenario on the fly...some kind of game mastered.

Just took a few pics in my office...wonderfull if you can combine work and play.....;)
We played heavily house ruled "Path to Glory" rules (Disposable Heroes in WWI).

The Brits were divided in two groups with common goals.
But first we diced out wich Lieutanant was longer commissioned (one of my favorite scenes in ZULU)...
Lars won and so he was in overall command.

(http://i.imgur.com/ufYos4Jl.jpg) (http://'https://imgur.com/ufYos4J')

The main goal of the British was to capture Abdullah Khan a local warlord, who was just trying to unite the local tribes aganinst the English....
As a bribe he has hidden a few crates of martini rifles in the area (must be secured by the British).

(http://i.imgur.com/Bmx8sJHl.jpg) (http://'https://imgur.com/Bmx8sJH')

Here is the small troope for Lars.
Two small firegroups of regular brits, one captured mountain gun (plus donkey) und and a few sikhs.
...and the colour party of the regiment.

(http://i.imgur.com/m9oVhNMl.jpg) (http://'https://imgur.com/m9oVhNM')

The Troops Lt. **GS**.
A handsome unit of Highlanders, some sikhs (borought from my darkest africa project) and a regulare unit of english. Additionaly there was a land suveyor, who wanted to reach the near mountains (got additional victory points if he reached the other side of the field) with his stalwart servant and his dog Bobby.

And the britsich get victory points if they manage to clear the watch tower.

(http://i.imgur.com/JAgUAh8l.jpg) (http://'https://imgur.com/JAgUAh8')

From the game itself there are sadly few pics...
Had to much to do with eating and drinking....:)

(http://i.imgur.com/SO4y77Tl.jpg) (http://'https://imgur.com/SO4y77T')

(http://i.imgur.com/aNt3HFfl.jpg) (http://'https://imgur.com/aNt3HFf')

(http://i.imgur.com/o9XgtrRl.jpg) (http://'https://imgur.com/o9XgtrR')

In the end the English were all victorious: the land surveyor reached the mountains, the watchtower was silenced and the afghan leader was captured.....;)
Only the Martinis were not found...

A pleasent little game and quite enjoyable for just one week of preparation.

Cheers,
Don

Thank you very much....;)

After the little game I decided to give it another wekk and paint up some some more stuff....:D

First I glued more Victrix scots together.

(http://i.imgur.com/cTqAfKMl.jpg) (https://imgur.com/cTqAfKM)

And I did a canon crew for the game, wich I didn't show before. Just added an arm from the perry ACW artillery set.

(http://i.imgur.com/3HeDQfJl.jpg) (https://imgur.com/3HeDQfJ)

After looking through my little collection it was obvious that I needed more afghans...:)
I found in my amateurish research, that there were more regular afghans involved than most movie would acknowledge.

So I searched the plastic mountain if I could find some more minis to get converted.
After a little time I found these Warlord prussians. Got them from tehir sprue sale. Was a lttle bit disapointed and wouldn't have probably not painted them as prussians...

(http://i.imgur.com/iZhqFkel.jpg) (https://imgur.com/iZhqFke)

So I got the greenstuff smoth and tried to build some herati infantry geknetet. Added a few beards and so...;)

(http://i.imgur.com/4ZIY5hJl.jpg) (https://imgur.com/4ZIY5hJ)

I wonder how they work out when painted....:)

Don

Some great work there Don! On your Highlanders, why not just cut the figs in half, so you use the kilted bottom (Victrix) and then attach a Perry upper torso, that way the webbing is correct and you only have to add some other details as you have done. Just a suggestion. Love how you are approaching this project....makes me feel guilty for not getting to work on mine!  :'(

Okay, after the first week I wondered if I should expaned my littel NWF collection.
Not wanting to spend more money, I was trying to work from the plastic pile....like with the Victrix scotts.

(http://i.imgur.com/i88kTmil.jpg) (https://imgur.com/i88kTmi)

In my humble net reseacherings I found a cool picture of theofficers of the 10th husars.
They really look like a ragtag professional troope...:)

(http://i.imgur.com/Pk40H3rl.jpg) (https://imgur.com/Pk40H3r)

So I saw my chance to get some cav oin the way...
...cause I had some old ACW cav sprues laying around....:)

Well I'm a button-counter, but I only count my own buttons. Counting another man's buttons for him is just not the done thing, Don. Keep doing what you're doing. :)

Not sure the 10th Hussars would appreciate being called 'ragtag.' They would have considered themselves among the cream of the crop, and a cut above the rest.  lol

Don,

BEAUTIFUL job on all these figures and terrain pieces!

I've literally spent decades immersed in the history of the Second Afghan War and could quote historically accurate uniform and weapon details for most of the troops involved, but instead of killing you I'd much rather get you to paint some figures and make some terrain pieces for me!  Also, I'm excited to see how your Herati Afghan regular infantry turn out!

P.S.  All that being said, the idea of using cavalry troopers in shell jackets and knee boots as ------ NO, I won't go there ------ I WON'T!!!  I just want to see them painted by you in khaki and blue...

PS  I'm also with Plynkes re: the 10th Hussars -- they look like a high-speed, low drag bunch of field veterans to me!

Thank you for your response. Sorry, if I got the "ragtag" word wrong. My school english is not the best.....:)
I ment somehow colourfull and professional campaign look...;)

@mad guru
I feel honoured that the mad guru is visiting my short little project....:)
Your site is so inspirational and just the wealth of information, miniatures and scenery is more then stunning. Your project, if one can call it that, is every wargamers dream.

Quote
I just want to see them painted by you in khaki and blue...

"As you wish!"

Just painted 4 minis for starters. Perhaps I will get them to 6. Have to see...

(http://i.imgur.com/Wxdsykbl.jpg) (https://imgur.com/Wxdsykb)

And in all my ignorance I used a few more turban heads and got me some lancers....;)
Will perhaps get them bulckier trousers.

It's true you don't see much illustrated or photographic evidence of 19th Century "barechested" Afghans but it's also not completely unheard of, particularly in the case of Ghazi fanatics, whose are generaly described as wearing white clothing but are somtimes described or pictured with their upper bodies at least partially bare.

I mostly use a mix of white-robed and bare-chested figures (with white pants!) for my Ghazi units.

Here's a couple of examples -- a period news illustration of an Afghan Ghazi about to be executed by the British, and figure "3" in the Osprey plate shows a Wilayati (Afghan mercenary) turned-Ghazi from the Indian Mutiny:

Not trying to say most or even many 19th Century Afghan tribal fighters or all Afghan Ghazis fought this way, but I don't know about ruling it out, particularly in the heat of Summer.

DV,

No pressure, they are your beautiful figures, so please forgive me for saying this -- but the one bald dude with the awesome beard and great paint job would benefit from a simple skullcap... you could use your awesome sculpting skill or even just paint the cap onto his head. It would have been very rare indeed to see a bareheeaded Afghan tribesman, then or now.

PS  If it's a lighting effect and he's already wearing a skullcap... I apologize again!!!

Don,

I saw that greenstuff turban on its own base and laughed out loud!  Of course that fellow could have lost his skullcap or turban while racing to fight the cursed farangi!

There's got to be a great skirmish scenario based on that base!  The Mullah wants his lucky turban back... now I want one too!

Re: Turcoman uniforms, the colors you mention seeing on the Foundry site are all legitimate choices. The 2 colors most often mentioned as being worn by Afghan Regular Army troops from Herat are red and "mustard", perhaps a yellowish shade of khaki.

In case you haven't seen it over on my blog, here's a link to the page with Ian Heath's excellent illustrated article "A MOST VILLAINOUS CAVALCADE". about the 19th Century Afghan Regular Army, posted there with his permission:

Okay, yesterday the big Multiplayer was erm played.....:D

6 Players, lots of stuff to eat, 4 hours playing time...:)
We played heavily house ruled Dispo Heroes. 3 Brits vs. 3 Afghans.

In the scenario the brits had to conquer the central little fortress.
Victory point were awarded for killing soldiers....;)

Here are the starting positions...

The red and the black cubs are victory points, wich can be collected. Red only by the brits, black only by the afghans.

(http://i.imgur.com/XPFqvN7l.jpg) (http://'https://imgur.com/XPFqvN7')

Close up of the scots...before they ran into a haily of musketry....

(http://i.imgur.com/089tQSSl.jpg) (http://'https://imgur.com/089tQSS')

Lt. Strand is prepairing his attack.

(http://i.imgur.com/To9ivH6l.jpg) (http://'https://imgur.com/To9ivH6')

The Pathans and afghans get ready for their ambush.

(http://i.imgur.com/gNYvpX2l.jpg) (http://'https://imgur.com/gNYvpX2')

The game got on quite well, perhaps a little slow....tooo big of a table...and no magic portals.

(http://i.imgur.com/K07x3HYl.jpg) (http://'https://imgur.com/K07x3HY')

The afghans are defeated in the end...to much house rules in favour of the brits.....;)

(http://i.imgur.com/Oh9MKUFl.jpg) (http://'https://imgur.com/Oh9MKUF')

Lt. Strand forced his way in the fortress...and stayed there till the end....and got the MVP award.

(http://i.imgur.com/s5NcvXZl.jpg) (http://'https://imgur.com/s5NcvXZ')

Scenario should have been more balanced towards the afghans...but just a bit.

Great Catering and a good game with really nice company made for a great finishing point for this little project.

Cheers,
Don

Managed to get 2 small games underway in my office at the university the other week.

Cause I bike at the moment to my work, I had to get everything in my saddle pocket. So just a few hills and some terrain..and quite a small troope....;)
We opted for Triumph&Tragedy for the rules.
I like the rules...they are well suited for such small games with just about 20 minis per side.

The brits had: one officer, 7 veterans, 5 man unit of elite scots, 5 trained Sikhs and a small Mmountain gun with two crew.
The Afghans had one 7 men unit with muskets, CC-weapons and shields, a five man and two 4 men units with muskets and a small mountain gun with two crew.
In addition there was a jezzail team in the watchtower in both scenarios.
Not in anyway balanceed...but made 2 cool games....:)

In the first scenario my guest had to silence the pathan watchtower. Not an easy task, but my shooting was awfull....:)

(http://i.imgur.com/vwB30Fbl.jpg) (https://imgur.com/vwB30Fb)

(http://i.imgur.com/TcUfYFXl.jpg) (https://imgur.com/TcUfYFX)

In scenario 2 the afghans had a few caskets of martini rilfes (smuggled over the Khyber pass) hidden in a small hamlet in the center of the table. So we both had to try to take and hold the center...

(http://i.imgur.com/dEMvjWMl.jpg) (https://imgur.com/dEMvjWM)

This time the game was much closer but in the end my afghans got wiped out and the few brits claimed the rifles.

Two very enjoyable games with T&T. Happy to have gamed them again....;)

Cheers,
Don

I liked the idea of these small games so much, that I thought of more settings of: one box of terrain and 20 minis per side....:)

I was always a little tempted by the sudan thing. I so I had already the brits for the conflict and some plastic ansars laying around, I thought I give it a try.
A kind of spin off from the NWF....:D

Luckily I found this little sandbox toy in the street. Pretty yellow...but I thought: just the right size for my small skirmish games....;)

(http://i.imgur.com/bRtzLbcl.jpg) (http://'https://imgur.com/bRtzLbc')

So I put a lttle filler on the small castle and builded a balsa wood door.

(http://i.imgur.com/b7l1XO2l.jpg) (http://'https://imgur.com/b7l1XO2')

After that I grabbed a big junk of styrofoam and scraped a few low hills and houses...;)

(http://i.imgur.com/sYqHjtXl.jpg) (http://'https://imgur.com/sYqHjtX')

Watched out that everything fitted in one of my transport boxes.

(http://i.imgur.com/6BIWjval.jpg) (http://'https://imgur.com/6BIWjva')

Got it painted the other day. Okay a few details could be added....:)

(http://i.imgur.com/KkV6PKxl.jpg) (http://'https://imgur.com/KkV6PKx')

And enough romm left for 2-3 palm trees....:)

Don

On the weekend I painted a few ansars for teh conflict...
A wild mix of ansar and nile arabs. Pretty pulpy...but my players will have less difficulties to tell the units apart.

(http://i.imgur.com/Tob6BHql.jpg) (http://'https://imgur.com/Tob6BHq')

Aganin I want to game this with "Triumph and Tragedy": 1 Chief, two 7 men units with spears and shields and one musket each, one troope of sharpeshooters with muskets, an ambush unit with spears and throwing sticks und ne Montaingun (I will borogh that from my other collections...her is just the crew).

Now I am tempted to add some more minis to the sudan side...oh dear....;)

Cheers,
Don

It looks amazing!

A couple of thoughts:

Have you considered leaving a few minies at the office for the next day?
If you need a bigger fort, you could cast a few plaster copies in the original. Since its a renewable resource you can cut them to pieces and build a huge modular fort!

I painted some more minis for my Ansar force.

(http://i.imgur.com/XrbO5ttl.jpg) (http://'https://imgur.com/XrbO5tt')

Originally I intended to use my NWF brits for the counter part. But after reading so many cool things of the egytian army, I wanted to try something more like this....;)

I searched my plastic pile for suitable minis and found some old ACW frames from the Perrys and some newer Zouaves.
Added a little geenstuff to get some fezes on the heads and of it goes...:)

Okay perhaps not perfect, but I am no button counter....:D

Little thread necromancy here, but I found a few shots of a game I played with the sudan stuff...;)

Nothing too fancy, but I thought I shared it anyway.
We did two small games with a Scenario were the egyptians had to reach some spots of water or die of thirst. The ansar force was more or less defending the wells and a few barrels...

Here you can see the setup.

(http://i.imgur.com/X0wCWobl.jpg) (https://imgur.com/X0wCWob)

In both games the egyptians just got to the water. Pretty close matches...

(http://i.imgur.com/zESc3lil.jpg) (https://imgur.com/zESc3li)

Still tempted to add some more minis to the setting....;)
