Title: Lords of the Multiverse! (Alternative Shadespire Bloodreavers) UD 14/04
Post by: Mason on March 11, 2018, 07:23:39 PM
OK, time for something weird....

I really have no idea what to call this and where this will go but it is certainly fantasy, so I am putting it here:

The Retro Sci-Fi/Fantasy/MotU/80's Pulp Mashup Project

or

The Lords of the Multiverse

A while ago, whilst looking at the Age of Sigmar Stormcast Eternals for the first time, I did not like them.

''Too much like bad 80's toys'', I thought....
They reminded me of the 1980's Masters of the Universe toys where all of the characters were pretty much based on the one 'dolly' with conversions made from that.

Now, that idea would not go away and slowly wormed its way into my head and grew.
And grew.
And wouldn't go away.
(And then the Crazy Viking made Skeletor from one of them and that just about sealed it!)

So, here are the first two efforts, based on Stormcast bodies (who will also be two thirds of my alternative versions of the three characters from the Shadespire game which some of my gaming group have really gotten into lately....).

These will probably be the first of the 'Good Guys'....

Not a whole lot done so far but they are getting there, I promise you.

Looking on with interest. I have some of the AoS scenery items set aside because I felt they could work for a MOTU setting.

Sorry, Dad.....
 ;D

I agree.
Some of those sets are so OTT that they scream '80's Cartoon Pulp!'.
I have been eyeing up the Ophidian Archway, Realmgates and Throne thingy for a while myself*.
This could be a dangerous route I am taking.

*Especially after seeing Cheetor's Exactamundo thread.

Thinking of scenery...

If the project gets to a point where games are played, then these old Gothic Ruins from my Krappefortt project will serve pretty well, I reckon.

(WARNING: Blast from the past. Sorry if you have had this lot inflicted upon you already!)

The ruins are worth showing again!

I really like what you have done with them - I have the same set, but they are just sat as plain grey plastic still, this gives some good ideas to move them forward.

I've always had a spot in my heart for Sci-Fantasy, between the old art from the HeMan toys and every 80s cartoon. I'm in.

Nice work on the buildings - are those Pegasus models bits? Inspiring, as I am on the verge of painting one of their church buildings.
Curious to see how the good guys turn out - but even more curious to see the eventual bad guys  :D

Thanks, chaps.
Glad that you like them and hope the pictures help somewhere along the line when you finish yours.

Yes, they are mostly Pegasus, with the exception of the long piece with the scaffold, which is the GW Shrine of Aquila with all the rivets cut off.
It should work out well with this project.

This is an intriguing thread. One that may end up costing me money again. ::)

You should be OK, so long as you don't go buying any Stormcast bits.
 :D

It is quite difficult ignoring nonsense, isn't it?
 ;)

Curious to see how the good guys turn out - but even more curious to see the eventual bad guys  :D

The basis for those should be arriving soon.
Well, the expendable minions anyway.
Although, these could equally be the 'bad guys', could they not?

Well, the 'bad guys' have arrived, so I can start tinkering with them soon too.

In the meantime, here is another WIP shot of the first three figures, which will also proxy as the Stormcast faction characters from Shadespire...

As you can see, they are nearly done.
A bit of work on the Grandhammer, the shield, a few small details and a shoulder pad, then I can start on the heads.

Next WIP shots will hopefully see them finished and ready for paint

You certainly have a flair for turning some truly unattractive pieces into something special. VERY WELL DONE!
Other than AoS, I have no idea what all the abbreviations mean. I would imagine that means they refer to things that
I am not involved with, however.

Thanks, chaps.
Much appreciated.
 :)

I agree that the base models are quite 'toy-like' but they will be versatile as 'dollies' for this project and make life a lot easier. I am really grateful for them for that purpose alone.

The actual figures are really starting to grow on me as well.
I find myself looking at other Age of Sigmar stuff as a basis for something else.....

There may be some form of addictive substance in the plastic, I reckon.
 ;)

Not quite finished yet.
The above list of things to do is all done, other than some cover-up work on the Grandhammer chap's arms and the hair to do now.
They do look much better now that they have their heads on, though.
Last WIP piccie to come tomorrow.

I do not like that 'uge 'ammer.... I really do not think it works, and those hands look a little on the large side, so I have ditched that idea and am awaiting a standard Grandhammer in the post.

Until then I am working on BIG 80's hair!

Well, those metal bits have been ripped off, I am glad that someone agrees.
 :D

Oh, and the hair has been done.
BIG hair, although 'Bald Obryn' does seem a little left out now, so he may get a toupee to help keep him warm.

He may become known as 'Big Boy Sharp' as he already has the long hair at the back.......

Brilliant putty pushing Paul, those hair do's are out of this universe.
GW puts skulls on everything, Paul puts a big do on the top of everything.

Mate those totally need guitars to rock out with, it really reminds me of Bill and Teds most excellent adventure and Wesley Snipes for some reason...

Go for it!

Thanks, chaps.
Your encouragement with this silliness is much appreciated.
 :)

More work has been done on 'Klegghead this morning, with the result that he is only waiting for arms now.
 ;)

As for the painting: Some will be bright and '80's style' with others not so as I do not want to restrict myself in any way by stating that they will be in any particular style.
The reasoning behind this project is really just to make anything that I want, reason be damned, and just go with the flow and see what happens.

As the first three are going to be used as alternatives to the Stormcast Faction in Shadespire as well, I will probably go for a more 'earthy' and realistic look (I know the subject matter goes completely against that statement...) but will just slap paint on as the muse takes me for the rest.

Speaking of painting:I am hopefully getting the first painting session in during the week.
Fingers crossed!

The Stormcast are perfect for my intentions as they will provide a consistent 'dolly' to work upon in the style of the vintage Masters of the Universe toys. I am so happy with them that I have just picked up another ten for a very reasonable price. They should keep me busy for a while.

I had a fair idea that they would work just fine as these Stormcast are a fair size and I had used them some years ago to make a Kroxigor for a Lizardman Blood Bowl team.

Back on the subject of the Lords of the Multiverse nonsense, the paint is starting to materialise and I hope to finish the first of them tonight.
In the meantime here are a couple of companion creatures that will be joining the crowd, as I wanted to add some variety to the project.

First up is Not-Severin with his Not-Gryph Hound*....

**because I love this Four A beastie and have been trying to find somewhere to add him into for ages.

As for having not heard of the characters: I am not surprised as the first three are alternative sculpts for one of the factions for the game Shadespire, whereas 'Lord Klegghead' (as he has the head of a Klegg...) is just a placeholder/silly name until he gets a proper one.

Suggestions for 'proper' names for any of the characters are always appreciated.

Speaking of which, the colouring is pretty much done on the Shadespire alternatives, I just need to wait for the varnish to dry and then base them. Then it is time for piccies and to see whether or not I have pulled off the look I wanted for them.
Fingers crossed!
 :)

Have no fear, sir, the Four A beast and his master are next in the queue.
I have been wanting to paint that Beast for ages but have not had an appropriate place to add him into a project until now.
He shall be painted at the same time time as Lord Kleggy,

Cherers, John.
Hopefully they prove a little more interesting later as I am finishing off the basing this afternoon and will take pictures when they are done.

Group shot of the first four finished models now that basing is complete.

There were a few nightmares involved at this stage...
Firstly, the 'crackle medium' that I bought did not work the first time when I added a small amount of colour to it.
I wont be doing that again.
It was not a disaster, I just had to do it again and paint on top of it, but it was tedious waiting for it all to dry again.

Secondly, my matt varnish is, apparently, knackered.
It has frosted and left a blue sheen in places. This could have been a disaster on other figures, but here on these, I really do not mind as it just adds a weird sheen which may be 'magic'.
Well, that is what I am going with anyway....

Oh, and I shall be saving it for when I want that effect.
 ;)

Individual pictures later....

Loving the light blue on these. Are they inspired by anything in particular or just random '80s-ness?

Cheers, WK.
 :)

These are pretty much simply made up.
As they are Shadespire alternatives I wanted them to be fairly recognisable as the original characters.
Apart from the big hair, of course...
 ;)

The 'Bad Guys', on the other hand, will certainly have much more of an 80's influence, with MotU being a particular source of inspiration.

I have been giving the setting a little more thought and have a few ideas in which direction to take this project from now on.

Each group will consist of three 'Heroes' and will be joined by a 'companion beast' and a small group of 'retainers/minions'. I may even add a larger creature to each group at a later date. Maybe...

The parts for the 'Minions' for this group have been ordered and will be added soon.

Much appreciated.

Well, no plans for gaming just yet, more of a 'just make stuff because I want to' project (apart from using the three Stormcast conversions in Shadespire, that is) but you never know what the future holds.
I have the parts for the 'minions' for this group on their way and also have the parts for the minions of 'Lord Klegghead' in hand, so those groups will not be too far away.

Cool stuff - especially griff :D

Cheers.
The Gryph Hound does seem pretty popular.
Probably as you can see him best (my missus has informed me that I really should take better pictures....again).

I have five more Gryph Hounds which will be converted in various ways to become 'companion beasts' to some of the heroes.

My wife also criticises my pictures pretty much every time. She even bought me the lightbox to do something about it. Slowly starting to get the hang of it with the last snakeman pics.

I took the group shot again with more light and replaced the pictures earlier in the thread.
Here they are again to save going back and looking for them....

I am not sure exactly where he will fit in yet, this is simply a conversion that I have wanted to do for some time.
He looks perfectly in scale with the Stormcast conversions, so he will probably be used in this project somewhere, although he will make a perfectly serviceable Ogryn for Inq28 if need be.

Bonus internet cookies if anyone, other than WK who provided it, can guess the original miniature that the conversion is based on.

It almost has the look of a Flintloque Miniatures figure.

I was thinking Post Apocalypse or Necromunda, but then it has been a long time since I saw a Flintlogue mini. The Big Guy definitely has a charm all his own. VERY WELL & IMAGINATIVELY DONE!

It is not a Flintloque figure, but I can see why you might think so.

It seems to have thrown WK, but he did send me a Mongoose Klegg a fair while ago.
I thought the head on 'Lord Klegghead' may have given it away, this is the rest of him, with a few 'additions', mostly from the old GW Ogre Kingdoms plastics...

(Bottom right figure).

I did not really expect anyone to guess it as it does look quite different, although it was an easy conversion.
I simply removed the head (now on 'Lord Klegghead'  ;)) and the front of the gun, added a new plastic ogre head and a few bits on his back and gave him new boots, helmet, goggles and a few pipes with greenstuff.

Hopefully he will look better painted up as it is difficult to see any of the small details in the pictures now that he is all grey.

The Klegg/Ogryn conversion has been painted. Varnish is coming out a fair bit too shiny at the moment but will be given a splash of dullcoat when I get some more.
He will do for now....

Still not too sure exactly how he will fit in here yet, but he will at some point. He will also be used in Inq28 games as well (as an Ogryn).

He was a bit of fun to make, a conversion I have had in mind for a while now, and it was good to finally get him finished.
He should fit in well in a few genres and I should be able to shoehorn him in somewhere in this project at some point.
