Finished moving the game room (mostly) and was finally able to host some miniature carnage in the new war room.

Now that the name is settled and the paperwork signed, we're play-testing ZONA ALFA on a regular basis. Gamed the introductory mission last night: The Crossroads at Blyatsk.

Other Pat is currently running a one-of DnD dungeon crawl for our weekly game night, so the next couple weeks won’t feature many table top photo ops. In the meantime, I managed to get some color on the first of the ZONA ALFA demo figs.

A Military crew with a Guide, a Medic, and a Technician, this is a solid, general purpose team. Lead Adventure figs on 32mm mdf bases.

I loved Fallout but I was so struck by the brooding menace of the STALKER games, I've compared them to everything else ever since. And nothing quite measures up to getting your first Makarov, a hand grenade, and bottle of vodka, and heading out to face a camp full of bandits.

Quick ZA game Saturday afternoon. Two crews ventured into a deserted town on the Zone's perimeter looking for some quick money.

They traded shots but were mainly focused on salvage. Each cleared a Hots Spot, snagged some loot and bailed before the turn limit. Other Pat was lucky enough to encounter an Anomaly with an Artifact  - which was a nice bonus on top of the regular salvage. (too bad he's going to have to hire a new recruit to fill the recent vacancy.)

Thank you for posting comparison pictures of SASM minis with LAF stalkers. I was looking to add a few SASM minis to my collection myself but was not sure how good they will scale up with LAF ones.

Thanks, Nimrod. I'll definitely keep your offer in mind as the project nears the finish line.

The SASM figs are smaller.  I bumped them up on the bases a bit and figured it looked acceptable for regular grunts.  Someone on FB pointed me to Warhansa Miniatures but the current Moderns/Mercs are similar size. Now there are older Warhansa figs out there, but they're no longer in production. Shame.

Were Warhansa the folks who had Igor's other modern Post-Apocalyptic sculpts? I'd looked at those for modern games, though found the poses a bit too dramatic for some "proper" wargaming. That and the guns are in more of his Lead Adventure style - either chunky, or fictional looking.

Since Igor worked on the War in Chechnya Kickstarter he's gone for more realistic proportions, presumably either due to that's where that current genre's going, or the company's request. At the same time he'd been working for SASM, and I can imagine that was a similar requirement for their range.

I've so far found that his figure's are on the average end of modern 28mm with height and proportions. Though there's a bit of variety with those particular DNR figures, with some being taller or shorter (as real humans are I suppose). SASM's 3D printed master ranges tend to be taller, though that's perhaps due to them needing to be compatible with their 1/50th scale vehicles (which Igor's range look a bit titchier besides).

Those modern Ukrainians are great for this setting, and I'd recommend maybe buying some of the new Americans in Middle Eastern clothing (not the whole range, just some are wearing cloaks and baseball caps which look a bit more Post-Apocalyptic). Though similarly Empress' SAS figures could work as well, even if they're a bit under dressed.

Ooh; finally, a not-S.T.A.L.K.E.R. miniature game!

Of course it can be gamed with pretty much any skirmish game, with some weird effects tacked on, but a dedicated set of rules is always nice.

S.T.A.L.K.E.R. is one of my favorite game series, and I've been thinking about getting myself a small range of miniatures to be able to tabletop game the setting. However, never to the extent that Wyrmalla ever has of course.

So I'll be eagerly awaiting what you come up with; I'm liking what I'm seeing so far... 8)

Youknow as far as modern Eastern European Post-Apocalyptic settings I'd be interested in seeing something based on Escape from Tarkov. Where most of the fighters are outfitted with modern equipment rather than sci-fi stuff, and there's not much supernatural content. Though of course realistically the figures would just be modern miniatures, or more ragtag models like these SASM Separatists.

Thing is, I really like the chunky stylized character of the Last Project figs and was hoping to find similar sculpts. I contacted Warhansa directly this morning and they graciously responded and explained that the current figs are more in line with Perry or Warlord. Which is cool, but I already have SASM and a batch of the Chechen Wars stuff.

I've seen some Escape from Tarkov videos and they looked very cool, but am focused on baking that STALKER aesthetic into ZONA ALFA, so the hint of supernatural (mutants, anomalies, artifacts) is present with the salvaging and combat.

I recently picked up their modern medics, lovely crisp casts but as said they are more SASM and tiny terrain size wise which isn't a bad thing for me. Wonder if pigeon may be closer to the LAM minis in size

It looks like Igor used the guns he sculpted for the Chechen line for his newer Warhansa sculpts. Huh, I may pick some of those up. I didn't like the older set as the guns looked a bit home made, and the proportions were off.

Those would  fit in well enough with the more rag tag style the Ukrainian sculpts have compared to the Russian VDV he did for the Chechens (and despite being Post-Apocalyptic styled, be fairly suitable for modern conflicts...).

Igor's currently sculpting a load of stuff for SASM, primarily niche lines. SASM had shown off some African tribesmen, along with mercenaries recently which would do for post-apocalyptic settings, though his more professional looking fighters may be the most suitable for S.T.A.L.K.E.R. like settings (even if there was that one book set in a Zone in Afghanistan).

Edit: And yeah, Pig Iron's scaled for Warhammer, so would work well with Lead Adventure. If you're into sci-fi guns that is (their hooded mutant line's fun).

SASM's recent Alpha Spetnaz would be perfect for Zone Enforcement troops - standardized equipment, uniform appearance, ultra modern.
I have converted Assault Group figs as well and they fit size-wise too. I just get a kick out of the character Igor sculpts into his figs.
Title: Re: ZONA ALFA: Survival and Salvage in the Exclusion Zone (new pics, 21 Oct.)
Post by: Wyrmalla on October 22, 2018, 04:58:11 PM
That's something which I've said to the owner of SASM before. Compared to his competitors, Igor's sculpts have much more character and detail. For instance the Spectre figures typically lack all the extra pouches and gubbins - which may be more realistic to an extent (though the modern fighters I've seen tend to have loads of gear), but as a wargaming piece they're not to my taste. I suppose his style fits more Skirmish style games where there's more individuality at play.

The 3D sculpts by SASM are more in line with Spectre's in their lack of extra gear. Odd in that Spectre's are traditionally sculpted, but they may be going for a certain look (realism being key). Regardless, Spectre also do some Spetsnaz who would fit in with modern survivors if you give them head swaps (I replaced them with ballistic masks by Empress and they look fair, though you could give them bare heads / hats / etc and do them up in random camo schemes, or buy Empress's gas mask set and have them being some proper military in a contaminated environment. I need to find a scenario to do something similar at some stage. I believe the Soviets had a dedicated hazardous environment camo at one point).

I've had my eye on SASM's Alpha Spetsnatz. The painting queue is backlogged as it is tho, so they'll have to wait. Looking at those comparison shots, I also realize I'd forgotten about Empress Universal Moderns.

I wonder If I can purchase extra packs and pouches somewhere.

Eureka does extra pouches which should work http://www.eurekamin.com.au/product_info.php?cPath=87_150_849&products_id=11317

Empress has a couple of packs of US and Brit stowage that includes packs and various useful bits and pieces http://www.empressminiatures.com/userimages/procart34.htm

I'm also considering Eureka's NBC Soviets as size should be similar to LAM (older sculpts).

Hope this helps.

SASM have a whole range of stowage too, and Empress sell HLBS' packs (however half of the bits are too large in both the sets they sell, as they're meant for vehicles). Though I'd imagine that Warlord's pouches which come with their WWII sets are easy enough to come by.

Eureka's Soviets in NBC suits are more like 25mm from experience. As do some of their Afghanistan Soviets come in closer to that scale oddly too (others are taller). Similar to Empress's Red Star Chechen range - where the older sculpts are smaller. Those would work for this setting too though.

Aye, you can see in those scale pictures I posted that the newer manufacturers: Empress, SASM & SASM have been erring on the larger end "28mm". I suppose that's perhaps why the older companies (and their relatively older ranges, I mean we're talking a few years with those Eureka figures) used 1/56th scale vehicles, and the new guys do 1/50th. ...At least then we're not then seeing 25mm models being used with 1/50th scale vehicles so much. :P

There's a few sources out there for old Soviet gas masks, and Empress do their newest ones, but I've had to sculpt the later Cold War period stuff in use myself. I can see you've gone mostly for those Pig Iron ones (and Lead Adventure have a similar set), though I've found they suit fictional settings more, and they are heroic scale. So perfectly suitable for pulp I suppose, like your own setting. ...I'd just like some realistic head swaps available, even if I'll probably never have a scenario to actually use them in. :)

Right now, if you're doing a S.T.A.L.K.E.R. style setting, Igor's sculpts through Tiny Terrain Models, SASM and Warhansa (and even Lead Adventure, if you're fine with the proportions, I mean they did use to be the defacto option) seem to cover most of your needs. Those Chechen rebels would be great for the lower tier scavengers out their, only equipped with a trench coat and grandad's shotgun.

Those comparison shots were perfect, thanks. I do want the figs to be on the larger side and as for 'realism v pulpy fictional',  I'm definitely leaning toward Igor's stuff - which I already have enough of.  (so no justifying another order from SASM or Empress....) Oh well.

Symbaroum is on the schedule for tonight's game. After that, we'll be forming crews and heading back into the Zone for more extensive play tests. So there's more Zona Alfa on the way.

Would you mind PMing me to talk about featuring 'the story so far' in a magazine?

Interesting AAR, as usual! I Like these terrain additions to the table with Mi-24 being my favorite. :)
Not sure about current squad composition ideas as IMHO  big squads of 9 men strong is a bit too much taking into account whole Zone idea where small teams of stalkers trying to get rich finding all of these artifacts and other useful stuff.

It was only a test game about squad composition and they tested extremes like the squad with 9 green stalkers or the squad with 3 veterans. In a real game i think they would use a mix of maybe 2 vets, 1 or 2 hardened and maybe 1 green stalker. I think squads of 4-5 men should work quite well. But of course i don't know the rules yet.

What he said...

Given that squads are built by 'Actions/Turn' and crews can be composed anyway the players want, we wanted to see if either extreme had an inherent advantage. And yes, the game confirmed my suspicion that a mixed Quality unit was the best route to go. End of the day, players do have the freedom to make larger squads of lesser-quality troops.

Most of the miniatures are from here, Lead Adventure's 'Last Project' line. Others are minor mods of various ranges, including modern Soviet/Russians.  In fact, I've got a small order of eBay bitz and Assault Group figs on the way right now.

And I take it you're building a computer?

Raid on Refinery Number 3

Large ZONA ALFA game last Friday night as a handful of the Cape Cod Wargame Commission met for Chinese take out and a quick salvage run into the Exclusion Zone. Other Pat managed to break away from baby duty to join Max, John, myself, and a visitor from Virginia, Drew K for a few hours.

Three Hot Spots with salvage. (I use dummy 7.62 rounds to mark the objectives.) Two commanders with three squads per side. Each squad was comprised of a Veteran Leader and two Hardened Troopers, with RPK and Sniper specialists in the mix.

We set a 6 Turn Limit and this being a demo game, the unit compositions were identical. The Zone Hostiles pre-determined also: Rats, Zombies and a Blood Sucker.

Turns One and Two unfolded in a very straightforward manner; each side advanced across a wide front with squads homing in on the objective areas dead ahead. The chatter of AK’s echoed across the deserted base as squads traded fire.

Along with the rifle rounds, Max and Drew threw bolts to trigger the Hots Spots. The intention was to have the Zone Hostiles spawn closer to Other Pat and John’s crews to keep them busy while they rushed in and claimed the loot. A good plan that only half worked.

On one side, Rodents of Unusual Size popped out from behind a dumpster on the wrong side of the concrete wall and headed straight for Drew’s squad leader. Oops. Bad throw, comrade.

Meanwhile in the refinery a pack of Zombies lurched out of the shadow of an oil tank and began shuffling toward Other Pat’s crew. Fortunately for him, his trooper had remembered to bring grenades.

A sweet underhand lob nabbed all four of the zombies but while Other Pat and John dealt with the undead, ( and a lucky burst of AK fire) Drew and Max scrambled in and claimed the salvage. Eyes on the prize, gentlemen.

That was the turning point. With the hour getting late and two out of three objectives claimed, everyone decided to call it quits for the night. Good game all around.

Many thanks to Other Pat’s wife and newborn daughter who let us borrow him for the evening, to John and Max for gaming twice in one week. (oh, the sacrifice!) and Drew K for spending precious vacation time to hang out, roll dice, and push toy soldiers around the table.

Nice work on Uri's crew.  They look like neither Scientists nor Accountants.  :)
As to figures overall, since I play mostly solo or with one other gamer, I find that I have enough figures to choose from sticking with the LA models.  I'm not keen on mixing manufacturers.

Dog creatures? You mean the ones in pairs on the larger base? If so, those are Malifaux Corrupted Hounds.

(The Malifaux concept and range is pretty fascinating. Not sure about a table top wargame with no dice tho...)

It is a fair question. I just don't know TNT well enough to answer. Or Across the Dead Earth, Last Days, Wasteland Warriors, etc.

On a larger scale, what separates one rules set from another? Theme? Scale of battle? Level of detail? Degree of realism? Game mechanics? Dice types? How many ways are there to game with toy soldiers?

Not like I reinvented the wheel or came up with some ingenious new mechanism. Zona Alfa is a pretty simple game that leans into the STALKER/METRO 2033 aesthetic.

From my perspective, it's a privilege to be able to make something and contribute. Some folks will like it. Some won't.  Hopefully enough will that Osprey will recover their investment and make money. And people will still be playing and enjoying ZA in the future.

Just to chime in here, I think that what I’m really excited bout is how you have presented the back drop, background, flavor of the setting. I enjoy getting rulesets not just or specifically for the mechanics but for the lore that will allow me to let my imagination run amok in these fantastical places and put my miniatures on the table with the scenery and play. ZA is as different from TNT as it is from 40K to me. So I look forward to getting a copy and trying it out.
My 2 cents

I got an impression that all of them wargaming titles are showing on WGV sooner or later.
Also they usually sell pdf's through Osprey's own site but it has an interface looking as it goes straight from 80's of the century past which makes me very reluctant to buy pdf's from them.

Regardless, between Chris C's editing and Sam Lamont's art, they turned my scribbled notes into a good looking rule book.

While I prefer to have everything in one place (i.e. WV) I've purchased a few PDFs on Osprey website because their 25% off when you buy both PDF and physical. I experienced no technical issue.

I am looking forward to Zona Alfa quite a bit!

Can you give us some description of how Hot Spots and throwing bolts work in the game?
Title: Re: ZONA ALFA: Salvage and Survival in the Exclusion Zone (Yuri's Crew. 9 Sept.)
Post by: Dentatus on November 09, 2019, 03:04:59 PM
The short answer is that Hot Spots (and the mission's Objective) are Risk/Reward locations. Typically centered on a scenic item, (a radio tower, an abandoned vehicle, a stack of crates...) they contain valuable salvage and occasionally Anomalies/Artifacts. Getting close also causes Zone Hostiles to spawn who will attack the nearest player models in LOS.
These locations/the spawning can also be triggered by tossing a bolt into that reaction radius. (same rules as throwing a grenade) This is handy if your opponent happens to be in the open as the hostiles will spawn and attack them instead of you. (assuming you were in cover)

Really looking forward to this but I'm going to be different - I'm actually looking to use a US setting (per Roadside Picnic), mainly as most of my collection of minis lends itself better to hot climes. I'll start a thread for STALKER: New Mexico when I dig out some minis.... (going to use Los Alamos instead of Chernobyl as the centrepiece/deus ex machina).

I have also been toying with doing a Southwest Apocalypse, although in my case not really "Zona Alfalfa" so much as a hot weather zombie outbreak loosely inspired by (the beginning of) Resident Evil 5. But anyhow, I have been eyeing Sarissa's South of the Border range for this purpose:

In terms of the Zona Alfa flip through, it goes out to paying members first, then is on general release a week or so afterwards.

Have you seen it yet Denatus? If not, I can arrange for a 'free to view' link that you can do with as you wish.

Thanks Grimjack but I'll wait. Then cross post the heck out of it.

One of the reasons the game is titled Zona Alfa was to hint while the Eastern European area was the first or primary affected region, it wasn't the only one. (And Zona Perestrelki was too long and too Slavic.)

I'm backing away from the Sarissa Precision site now and hiding my wallet. *yikes* I could drop a $100 in an eye blink on buildings I "need" for a demo board.

How do you like the new Russian buidlings?

Word to the wise regarding Sarissa: the greyboard is truly awful. The MDF parts of the kits are great but that greyboard, sheesh.

Zona Alfa is a great name for the game. It clearly implies there are other zones, as intended. I just hope Cypher can get some use out of the name Zona Alfalfa for his New Mexico campaign LOL!

Sarissa's Russian buildings remind me of the starting village in Shadow of Chernobyl. Call of Pripyat feels more commercial and light industrial.

Zona Alfalfa  lol

I like that!

Manchu - which buildings have you built with grey board? I built one of the brownstones and a factory unit and thought it was OK on them, if a bit flimsy, and not really great for resting an inner floor on (the factory unit)!

Speaking about conversions..
Can you please tell your opinion about possibility to use Empress miniatures gasmask Russian heads with LAM bodies?
I don't have any Empress miniatures minis in my collection  and so can only guess how well will they scale with LAM.

"Empress Minis gasmask heads on LAM bodies - - "

I don't own a lot of Empress Minis but the LAM figs are chunkier and larger than the handful I do have. The EM figs are nice, don't get me wrong, but the Pig Iron Productions spare heads seem a better fit for LAM.

That said, I think EM heads would work with Eureka figs or Spectre. Or perhaps The Assault Group as well.

***
Look into the Tiny Terrain Chechen War range. Igor K's sculpts but smaller than LAM. That might be a good fit too.

Title: Re: ZONA ALFA: Salvage and Survival in the Exclusion Zone (Starting Crew - 29 Dec.)

There are weapon categories: Pistol, SMG, Shotgun, Assault Rifle, Battle Rifle, Squad Support LMG, Sniper Rifles, Rocket Launchers. ZA doesn't differentiate between types within those categories.
Troops are recruited with your choice of Melee weapon, Ranged Weapon, and 2 grenades. Body Armor and Equipment varies by quality level.

Audiobooks are tough. I had "A Prayer to Saint Strelok" turned into one and listening to the auditions was brutal.

Even tho I specified 'no accents. focus on the tone of the story', 7 out of 10 tried to act/dramatize their way through it with terrible, distracting effect. Others sounded like perky newscasters reporting the weather. Utter detachment/incomprehension of what they were reading. In the end, I went with a college-age kid with extensive theater experience.

He did well, BTW.

I received an early copy of this game It's really well done. It remains simple but has tactical depth. You can also play it solo if you want to.  I'm always curious about that. This one works as a solo game or a competitive game. Low model count, a true skirmish size.

A lot is packed into the 64 pages, which is impressive. Many of Osprey's games spend too much time rehashing familiar rules from other rule sets. This does not. I recommend it for anyone who likes modern or near-future skirmish and, of course, for any post-apocalypse fans. I'm a professional designer myself, so I'm fairly critical. This passes the smell test. Buy it.

Bought the .pdf today (will buy a hard copy once one reaches my LGS).

I like what I see! I kept going through looking for the gigantic list of points and options and the single page of: "here's 3 options - sort it out" is simplicity itself. I like. :)

For an Osprey book infamous for page limits you do seem to have packed a ton of information in.

Now if only there were some figures that'd be perfect for this book. There's a company with lead in the title... I just can't quite remember it...  :P

Just ordered two copies of the book for myself and a mate.

As a traditional historical wargamer this is a new departure for me. I have a lot of ruined buildings from my WW1 games. Zona Alfa just seems a fun low commitment game to try. I also wondered if it could be adapted as a WW1 trench raiding game if say there is a ruined town between the lines? Seen 1917 twice now so you can see where I got that idea from!  lol

Great looking models. Lots of eye candy.

I have been a fan of Stalker and metro for a while. So I couldn’t resist getting the rules and like what I see. Now all I have to do is crack out my Stalker/Metro inspired minis and get a game in.

What modifications would be necessary to play this with 20mm character models?

I’ve been working with 20mm post apoc figs lately and would love to try skirmish with the same models via ZA if possible.

20mm? I'd play it as is, straight out of the book, on a 3 x 3 area. You want to scale the measurements down accordingly, be my guest.

Well then, I’ll look forward to engaging Zone Hostiles in a southwestern US exclusion zone. Roswell, NM but set the visitation in the 90s? Area 51 after a power failure and shutdown?

Hey Jack,
Truck is Matchbox/Hot Wheels. Where the weapons come from?
Where is the gun total bug killer from?

The weapons on the Hot Wheel car are from the Implements of Carnage gun sprue from Northstar. The figure is a classic Citadel Street Warrior from the old Dark Future line.

I think I’m going to do ZA in two settings. 20mm Southwest US with Citadel Street Warriors and 28mm Eastern European proper with foundry Street Violence models.

We're not under severe restrictions here yet, so Occasional Tom and I managed to get in a short game Tuesday afternoon. A lost supply convey sends out a distress call. Two crews respond.

Battle Report: "Wrong Turn, Alexei."

Help! This is convoy S37. Can anyone hear me? We’re holed up in an old industrial facility by a swamp and these huge rats and ghoul things are swarming us. The drivers are dead. So are the scientists. Now there’s only two of us left. Anyone, come quick. We’re running low on ammo and they keep coming.

***

A small convoy assigned to resupply a Ministry of Science outpost in the western sector of the Zone took a wrong turn. New driver? Bad map? Deliberate detour? Who knows? The only important thing is you were close enough to pick up the mayday on your radio.

Not that you’re always a Good Samaritan, but you know the area. Someday it could be you in desperate straits, so a rescue attempt is a worthy cause. Oh and there are supplies on those trucks and it never hurts to get on the Ministry of Science’s good side. Could mean a reward and more work in the future. So off you go.

THE ONE WITH THE BROKEN WINDOWS

Turns out Supply Convoy S37 wasn’t lost at all; a notebook in the jacket of one of the drivers (the half-eaten one) revealed their detour into the Strashnyy Ublyudok facility was deliberate. Seems they had been sent to drive-by recon the area and locate a specific office building. “The one with all the broken windows and a truck out front.”

Occasional Tom’s crew boss looks around at the abandoned buildings and spits. “Well, that narrows it down.”

Judging by the other directions and descriptions in the notebook however, this is the right place.

“There must be something here,” you comment. “Why else risk the convoy like this? I say we go further in and look around.”

“50/50 split?”

You nod.

And so both crews rub dirt in their wounds, reload their weapons and form up.

Time to scour fleabay then I guess - although that one with the massive mouth and long arms, I'm sure there is something GW do in their undead range(s) that might be converted into similar (maybe too big though)

Out of the hospital long enough to hammer out a Bat Rep from our latest Zona Alfa game. Occasional Tom and I tried out the new 'Point of Interest' mechanic that introduces numerous but random events to the mission.
