Title: Zeebrugge - St George's Day 1918
Post by: bz1 on April 04, 2018, 07:16:22 PM
Meant to post this a few weeks ago. Meant to do a lot of things a few weeks ago!

"Twisting the Dragon's Tail - The storming of the mole at Zeebrugge" is the Maidstone Wargames Society's 2018 show game. It made its debut at the Tunbridge Wells Wargames Society's open day (Cavalier) at the end of February. Luckily people were too polite mention that it wasn't finished at the time.

The game focuses on the assault of the mole by the landing parties of the Royal Navy and the Royal Marines at midnight April 23rd 1918.

Its next outing will be at Salute in a week and bit. We've also been invited to display the game alongside the Naval Wargames Society at Portsmouth Dockyard as part of their centenary event on April 22nd. We're rather chuffed about that.

Hopefully its of interest. Any questions, please ask.

Superb effort. You lads deserve a medal for taking that project on but well worth the effort. Brilliant. That’s the standard of game that would make me feel it’s worth visiting a show to see this in the flesh. Epic.

It looked superb at Tunbridge even at the distance I managed.  Will look forward to getting close up at Salute.

Lovely looking table, especially the ship,  :-* Is that all scrstchbuilt? I always fancied building a ship like that as an Aeronef.

Thanks for the kind words.

The bulk of the game was scratch built.

The Vindictive has an MDF frame (based on plans obtained from Greenwich) clad with lime strips. This was covered in thin metal plates with rivets pressed in.

As much as possible I used commercial model boat fittings (the cowel vents, railings, chains etc) whilst the deck and splinter mattresses were cast in resin.

The mole is again mostly MDF (I'd indebted to the B&Q wood cutting service) with the concrete blocks carved in with a Dremel. The cobbles were cast in resin from a master made from Milliput. Gaps in-between the resin sections were filled with more Milliput cobbles to avoid the joins being too obvious.

Figures were mostly Woodbine for the British and Tsuba for the Hun. Others from Perry, Pulp, HLBS with a few from Northstar, Great War and Wargames Illustrated.

The Railway wagons and trucks are MDF from Sarissa. The crates are 4Ground. I reckon that I must have glued together over 1,100 bits of MDF crate sections.

We're running the game as a rolling party game with a very simple set of home-brew rules. The punters take on the role of the heroic Brits with about an hour to complete their various objectives.
