It's been in my head for a few months... build a battle of Berlin Reichstag table. I'm going to use a LOT of artistic licence.
Reichstag is approx 140m so at 1/56 that is about 8ft long, so I'll build it at 1/100 which brings it down to approx 4ft. Whiel this seems extreme it's still very large and the lack of 'human size' doors means it won't be that obvious (I hope). I'll be making the facade about 6" deep so it doesn't occupy the whole table but you can still get in to use the internal spaces. (we also play in 15mm so the scale will work for that!)
I'm also planning to make the Koningsplatz fit on the table with the Kroll Opera house on the other end (Probably...) So obviously the scale is basically being ignored.
The Koningsplatz had a collapsed subway tunnel full of water wth a couple of bridges in the middle as well as a bunker to the north and rubble/ruins/trenches all over.
I'll also be moving the 2x WW1 Heavy Tanks from outside the Berlin museum to the Koningsplatz as I like the idea and it's prety iconic (if rather a stretch). Currently trying to establish what the buildings infront of the Reichstag look lik as it looks like it was at least partially built over.
Then I jsut need a last level force to face my Russians...
Thoughts or suggestions welcome!
-
My first thought is you are completely bonkers
......but after seeing your other work
........my second is I cannot wait to see it finished and in action lol
-
Good luck!
-
I'll need it! :D
Pic of Koningsplatz in front

The sort of clutter required (Quite a few pics are post war after the square has been cleared):

I plan on making the damage something like this:

-
Wow!
I definitely look forward to seeing how this works out.
-
This has tons of promise, looking very much forward to it. A slightly condensed-volumne "caricature" is probably the only way it can be done, and in 28mm probably the best way to do it, anyway.
One thing before you go designing road signs: It's "Königsplatz", or, if your keyboard doesn't support umlauts, "Koenigsplatz".
-
Will be watching this with interest, but from a safe distance (you might be infectious!)
-
Thanks all. Its pretty ambitious... so might come to nought but hopefully...
I'm some way off roadsigns! lol
-
Very promising 8)
Would it be an idea to build it modular so you could have only a corner or the whole thing on the table depending on the game?
-
It will be. The towers, facades and central bit will be separate
-
There’s really only one way to tackle this project properly.

-
'Battle damage' will be easier :D
-
:o
-
I may be retired but ,I'd strongly recommend a medication review lol
Oh I do love a mad cap plan.(coz they never finish where you thought they would when you started.)
Good luck.
-
I self medicate - Lager, PVA and superglue.
-
Will look forward Rich in seeing this project come to fruition.
All the best,
Helen
-
Its quite large... lol
-
Great start.
-
Looks good Rich, finished by Monday?
-
Er... probably not!
On the hunt for something to use as a pillar so I can make the master.
-
Try a wedding cake shop?
-
Tried, they are all fluted columns these need to be smooth.
Going to see about a bit of dowel tomorrow.
also need some plaster.
-
Pencils ,and wrap a bit of card around each end to form the layers / rings, and finish off with a washer or two.
(I use them all the time just don't tell anyone ;))
-
DAS clay and some lasercut bits. Ready for silicone...
-
Realised (after I poured the silicone) that I've messed up the measurements of the pillar and it won't fit with the window frames... bugger. The bottom plinth is far too tall.
Ah well... on with the next plan. I found some 15mm dowelling today so I'm going to use that.
The scrolly bit at the top is really tricky...
-
Seeing as the silicone is poured already I'll use them as the porch pillars.
-
Did you make them deliberately wrong so they’d fit the Greek temple I want you to build? :-)
-
lol
No but...
-
Another try
Better this time
-
Superb stuff, looking forward to following this to its conclusion 8) 8)
-
Pic of one wing and detail.
-
Looking good Rich
-
:o That‘ll be epic!
-
Great start Rich! That’s going to be a corker! :-*
-
I've ordered some dolls house coving to add to the facade too.
-
Very nice, and so fast.
Me, I just about managed to glue together one Renedra sprue C.
-
Blimey, the last time I looked at this thread you were toying with the idea, and now, the Reichstag is already half-built! I'm impressed and I'm looking forward to see this develop.
-
Thanks all
The laser does make things much faster!
Window portico and new pillar in silicone now.
Going to look at the tower now...
-
First cast and one tower started
Quite happy with the cast just hope the plaster can reproduce it.
-
Away with work so no progress until later in the week.
-
Stunning work; I built the Stalingrad Grain Elevator in 6mm, and that took me forever. Was cool when done though.
Couldn’t even imagine doing it in 28mm!
-
Struggling to find much info about the krolloper / kroll opera house. Found a few pics and it looks like it was pretty comprehensively bombed. No drawings or plans found yet... also can't find any info on the bunker to the north. Looks like a personnel shelter rather than a fighting position but I will persevere!
-
So far so awesome. 8)
-
Amazing.
-
brilliant
-
Thanks all
Quick bit of progress my architrave turned up so I added a bit. Looks perfect!
-
Next is the lower window detail and tower details.
I'm going to use a bit of artistic licence and use round pillars instead of square in a couple of places. Mostly as I don't want to have to make another corinthian capital! I don't think anyone will notice...
I'm going to cast the window infill panels as quite a few are broken and I figure itll be easier to make plaster look broken.
-
More nice.
-
CraZy!
-
I take that as a compliment :D
I'm hoping my plaster will arrive today so I can start casting pillars. I also need to sort the blocked window moulds should just be a few layers of MDF.
The vast majority of the structure is laser cut so it will be quick to build but I'm awaiting for another order of MDF.
The work will be in detailing and battle damage.
The hardest bits will be the portico freeze and the two freezes down either side of the main entrance. Not really sure how to do them. I might make them form PVC and engrave it in by hand.... or I could laser engrave in MDF... but it'll be a problem.
The other bits that need thinking about are the satues and stone jar things on the top. I can sculpt/cast the jar things but statues will need to be bought.
-
How tall is the frieze and how tall does the statuary need to be?
-
First significant cock up. The tower above the pillers isn't how I thought. Fixed now.
-
Now with pic
The foamboard is just to fill the gap. It'll be covered or replaced!
-
The freezes are about 30mm wide and 150mm tall. The portico will be around 250mm wide.
-
Pics
-
Looking good Rich!
-
Why not print the freezes Rich? You could print multiple copies and do it 3D decoupage style (if that makes any sense) so some bits sit forward so there’s some depth to the freeze but you don’t have to sculpt it
-

I had to roll back the technology choice there, I was thinking you meant 3D printing, then I realised you meant paper printing ^__^.
You could laser etch the majority of the frieze but have cut outs to take various size figures.

Lol, yes I was suggesting the old fashioned way. It'd save a lot of drawing in a CAD program
-
Thanks chaps, the vertical freizes are less of a problem I reckon as they will be partially concealed by the portico, the portico will be a problem however.
3d print or decoupage might work... I'll see if I can find an existing 3d model I can steal from.
-
Can I suggest a direct hit with a 75 mm shell?
Great work by the way.
-
lol maybe!
-
I love how far you are going with this! :o
I take it a simple, old school way of doing it is out of the question? Green stuff?

:o :o :o :o
-
I most definitely do not have the skill to do that!!
-
Pillar production in progress
Window frames are proving harder...
-
So far...
-
I think you missed a bit..
-
Awesome!
-
Remeber there is a 2" plinth to go under it too... It's a bit of a beast. It's starting to get heavy too. I'm hoping the plaster will dry out a bit more as currently it's a bit damp and soft.
-
"Man trapped for days in workshop after Reichstag falls on him"
-
:o
-
I’m waiting for the bit where you distress it all using an air rifle and a blowtorch.
-
Good idea. Off to buy an air rifle... though a shotgun might be quicker...
In the meantime...
-
Wow again.
-
Impressive :)
-
That is terrifyingly good!
-
That really does look very good.
-
Thanks!
Got my order of MDF but it's not cutting very well, not sure if it's the laser or if it's the MDF, it's quite fussy if the MDF is too dense it doesn't cut very easily and there is no way to tell. Looks like I've been unlucky.
Started on the other tower and wing just because I've got other stuff to do (domestics) and I can leave it cutting.
I also rigged up a cooler for the Laser water, MG-B heater matrix and some case fans!
Pics to follow...
-
Its a bit big...
Soviet heavy for scale!
Also the laser cooling rig is working well!
-
Wow again.
You said it! :o
-
Does that make you a fanboi?
-
Does that make you a fanboi?
Boom! Tish!
-
Looking great!
-
I'm in awe of people who can create models like this from scratch. If I tried it would just look meh. Can't wait to see it finished in all its glory.
-
Thanks all! Central part started. Took a while to decide on the geometry and still need to work out the roof.
28mm chap for scale. Remember this is really 1/100ish!
Also don't forget there is a 2" plinth below all this lot!
-
Terrific build :-*
-
Brilliant.
-
Run out of plaster nearly (1kg) so ordered some more.
I've left gaps for the carving bits... still not sure how to do them yet!
I also need to sculpt/cast the pots on the roof line and find some suitable statues
Oh and make the plinth...
-
Just did a quick add up and I need almost as many half pillars as I've already got! I need another 20 or so! lol
-
I just clicked on this when a link came up in the sidebar, so I didn't see the full title. As soon as I saw the picture I recognised the building: you've captured the shape and appearance beautifully.
-
Thanks! Work stop for plaster and, well, work!
Detailling will take an age...
-
Plan is to make the platform from 3mm MDF faced with PVC sheet. I do need to think about storage too...
-
Rich I’ve got some old 15mm ancients you could use for the carved scenes, just remind me next time we play. Also some of the really old 25mm ancients I’ve got might do for the statues.
-
Cool! :D
-
trying to work out if I want to stick the buildings to the plinths or leave them seperate. I'm thinking stick them together as it'll protect the pillars but it will make storage that little bit harder...
The tower tops conviniently fit inside the towers (total fluke) and the 'dome' will be made to fit inside the main building. Probably make the rooves on the wings removable too. Might magentise the finials on the top so they can be removed too, stop them getting kocked about too much.
I've a storage box in mind (Banana box!) pity I didn't measure it before I started... lol
-
Outstanding work. :-*
I'd hate to try and store that though :o
-
Yes storage may be an issue... Along with the rest of the planned table!
In addition there will be the Kroll Opera House and the various ruins in between the two...
-
I am rather surprised the nurses allow you such sharp tools in the padded cell Rich but great job anyway lol
PS Everytime I read the topic title I say to myself blood or porridge congeals and plans coalesce.....its like one of those annoying radio one songs you cannot get out of your head.
-
My plans congeal ;D
The ideas wash around for a while until they congeal into a plan; much like blood or porridge they start out fluid and move around a lot until left undisturbed for a while, then they settle into something unpleasant but more solid.
-
Started on the plinth, no pics yet... But the 'wing' plinths are done, the tower plinths started. It's pretty large...
-
So where is the 28mm christo to wrap it up in cloth? ;)
-
Tower and wing plinths wip
1/56 and 28mm for scale
-
Pillar and rubble production
-
:o :o :o :o :o :o :o absolutely amazing 8) 8) 8) 8)
-
Central plinth made, just a few fiddly bits to go. Lots of cockups on the sides but fixed or hidden!
Detailing still progressing slowly... pic to follow
(It's f-ing massive now)
-
Pic
-
And to think, it's all made out of chocolate and icing sugar. :)
Very nice! BTW I've found how you can distress it to 1945 levels.

2.09 into the vid
-
That's is stunning! :o
What's the overall length now?
-
Thanks
Its 4' long and 6" deep
The dome will make it about 12" tall.
-
Just...... :o!
-
Wow again.
When it is finished you should fake some "drone" fly past footage of it.
-
8)
-
Spectacular :-*
-
Still tring to work out how to do the pediment and friezes. Going to be tricky...
Might have to try sculpting them... :o
I'm going to give them two coats of ignoring for now...
-

Fair enough. I doubt most people would have noticed if you'd not said anything- it's not like we see the real building every day.
That said, Eldest Son is currently visiting it as part of a school trip to Berlin. He reports it has been renovated a little bit since the time of your model.
-
Just a little!
It' was refurbed in 1971 and more recently in 1993 I think with it's current dome.
Post war the internal structure was basically destroyed.
-
Rather than sculpting the friezes have you considered creating a bas-relief effect by scribing some heavy duty aluminium foil? With a suitable scribing tool, I reckon you could get a decent effect indenting the back of some heavy duty metal foil, like the stuff you find sealing coffee cans and the like. You could pencil on your design (backwards, naturally enough) and then trace over it. Then glue the results to the building. Just an idea.
-
Interesting idea, thanks! I'll have a ponder.
I was going to get a photo and turn it into black and white to get the contrast and fix any perspective problem. Scribing direct would allow me to just trace the picture. If I backed it with some air dry clay prior to scribing it'll have a bit more body to it... interesting thanks!
The plan for the table has changed too, I'm no longer going to do the Kroll opera house as it's too big and too far away. The table will start around the middle of the koeningsplatz with the flooded subway near the western edge. The proportions aren't that far out for a 6x4 table.
The western side is pretty open with little cover, the eastern end is littered with ruined buildings, trenches and debris.
The Riechstag will be a trap. There are very few access points from the front and the temporary buildings in front block a lot of the lines of sight, particularly form the south wing, so units in the building will be static firing positions and vulnerable to long range heavy weapon and sniper fire.
-
Loving the build Rich :D
Two questions ...
1. Will we be able to see this astounding structure at a show?
2. Is the building circled in your second post the Swiss embassy? A Berliner told me a story about Stalin giving strict orders not to damage it. You might be able to factor in some special rules on that...
EC
-
Thanks
It'll probably be at the Welsh Open in Cardiff and the Ribble Rumble in Stockport this year.
The building in the red circle is a personnel shelter bunker. The embassy i think is further north and west
-
Working on rubble and the plinth.... pics to follow.
Got a day of Bolt Action on Sat so that will limit progress but I think I've got all the bits I need.
Problems will still be the friezes and the finials on the roof line but I'll get there...
I've got some textured spray paint I'm going to try but I'm concerned it'll obscure the pillar detail.
The rubble - I'm casting hundreds of 1/48 scale bricks....

Having used textured spray paint, I'd suggest you mask off the pillars and anything else you don't want pebble dashed. It looks good on some things, as adobe or stucco but smoother concrete and dressed I'd say not so much.
There is a product available locally for giving furniture a distressed/ 'shabby chic' look. Spray can that produces a fine, chalky and very, very matt surface. Locally they sell it in a powder blue and a very useful pale gray that's great for concrete surfaces. No doubt there is an equivalent in the UK. I understand you now have the Bunnings chain over there and that's where I have purchased it here. Dulux do spray cans and IIRC so do Rust-Oleum.
-
OK Thanks I'll check it out - thanks! I was going to trial it carefully!
-
Rustoleum used to do a couple of textured sprays, terracotta and suede that had been recommended for 1/43 scale road surfaces and concrete. My local HobbyzRUz used to stock it, but now only have a Rust version. It looks like it has a lot finer "grain" size than the other kinds.
Wilkinson's have own brand sprays, one is very coarse (two colours) and the other "Desert Bisque" is slightly finer.
I used an ancient Citadel Roughcoat on a pillbox.

Thanks chaps! Last thing I want to do is bugger it up with the wrong paint!
-
well i must aplauad your efforts, i thought i was mad doing one in 1/72 full scale, but you are madder!

@SandSmodels
That looks very good - well done

Very nice but I’m not sure that’s quite what your wife was after when she asked you to build a conservatory.
-
Sandsmodels: Awesome! Are you interested in sharing sources? Found some interesting Russian blogs with some good pics of the buildings in front.
-
Details details...
And rubble casts. The rubble will be a core to build onto.
-
Lots of rubble!
-
Smart thinking.
-
Now approaching full height...
-
Simply...... :o!
-
Wow!!
-
Good grief - that IS impressive :o :o :o
-
Work stopped play. I'm now in London for a meeting. Back to it later this week...
-
Problem will be that it's so big that it needs a shed load of detailling. I still need to do the wing rooves and the other turret basic structure. I just wanted to get the dome started as it was the main part missing.
-
Bloody impressive! The ball peen hammer on the table looks a bit ominous though.
-
Wow!
-
Some of the joins are a touch tight and the little hammer (its only a baby) is for encouraging them to fit.
-
Looking good Rich. :o
-
outstanding build indeed
-
Just having a wee look again.....is your dome going to work? Should it not be built on a semi circle as opposed to a rectangle?
-
Just having a wee look again.....is your dome going to work? Should it not be built on a semi circle as opposed to a rectangle?
If you look at the picture on page 1 the dome wasn't round, more sort of a curved greenhouse on a square base.
-
Ah, my bad!.....I’ll just sit here and shut up!
Carry on! :D
-
lol
I'll post my research pics later. Yes its a squared off dome not a hemisphere ;) problem will be ti make it look right without being too fragile
-
Yes its a squared off dome not a hemisphere ;) problem will be ti make it look right without being too fragile
Do you know anyone with a vacuum mould?
-
Not locally. What are you thinking?
-
Remember there is no covering. All the glass has gone so it's just a frame
-
Not locally. What are you thinking?
My thought would be to vac mould the dome and then apply the ribs on the outside.
That would be fine (ignoring the actual making the master and getting the moulding done), except that from your reference photographs, oddly enough it is a bit short on glass.
Specialist photo-etch on Stainless steel/phosphor bronze would be expensive and fiddly.
-
As you can see from that pic I've taken a few liberties with the dome position and design. I might remake it as the first go is a bit crude. Its also significantly compressed front to back.
-
Can your laser cutter cut plastic (Rowmark?).
This lot do some quite fine work with it https://www.yorkmodelrail.com/index.php?route=common/home (https://www.yorkmodelrail.com/index.php?route=common/home)
-
Jesus, Mary and St Patrick, ghat’s a hugely impressive build!

Yes but its not as clean a cut as mdf and always tends to leave a burr
-
That is an incredibly impressive erection :o :o lol
Tempted to seek out one of those shows just to see it in the flesh (so to speak).
-
What's the form on posting links to other forum? Specifically I am thinking of a chap on RMWeb who is recreating Manchester Central, principally out of plasticard.
http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/topic/28293-manchester-central-clc-gn-warehouses-castlefield-viaducts/ (http://www.rmweb.co.uk/community/index.php?/topic/28293-manchester-central-clc-gn-warehouses-castlefield-viaducts/)
As well as being incredible modelling it may give you some ideas for the dome steelwork.
-
That is bloody amazing! :o
Problem is Ive not found any detailed drawings online and I'm using a variety of photos sketches and guesswork! I'm pretty sure that I'll redo the dome...
-
Maybe it makes sense to solder frame made of copper wire?
-
I was considering that but its hard work. I've done similar before. I'm going to have a ponder see if i can make the MDF version work
-
Brilliant, this just gets better & better 8) :o :o 8) :o 8) :o :o 8)
-

I do not think it is an issue unless it falls foul of taste and legislation rules (moderators will intervene if required) .
There are a number of model railway projects that might be an inspiration, Bath Green Park is another.
-
Sandsmodels: Awesome! Are you interested in sharing sources? Found some interesting Russian blogs with some good pics of the buildings in front.
hi rich h
yes very interested but i do not that much in reality, mainly internet search pics.
i had designed mine for casting & selling but the weight is so much i doubt anyone can afford one outside of the uk!
-
Well that's got a bit good in a hurry.
I admire your courage.cos there's no way my Mrs would let me build a 4ft mdf model in the house. Unless yours is a fan of that burnt mdf fragrance. I'd be a dead man.Who'd spent a fortune on Yankee candles, before he died.
-
lol fortunately due to a quirk of poor building quality (thanks to the previous owners) the dining room extension is chuffing freezing so we don't venture in there routinely, hence I can annex it on occasion for extended periods!
Also she processes raw sheep fleeces now and then, burnt MDF is positively pleasant compared with 6 month old sheep poo and grease...
-
My pics are here:

Note some of it is the Kroll Opera House
-
Great progress, really enjoying following this.
-
Had another go at the dome.
Also finished the tower tops.
-
I'm going to use copper wire on top of the dome to make the frame.
-
This is truly a magnificent thread. Thanks for sharing.
I myself has long ago lost the courage to do projects that massive. As I flounder and die a quarter of the way in.
-

I myself has long ago lost the courage to do projects that massive. As I flounder and die a quarter of the way in.
It's not finished yet... I've a pile of half finished stupid projects!
But this is the largest by quite some margin...
-
Dome.
-
Very nice.
The wire makes it look suitably delicate.
-
Wow, that's stunning.
Also a bit strange to those of us used to the new dome...
-
Outstanding :o
-
Thanks all.
I think the only structural bit left is the front steps then detailling...
-
gorgeous
-
Wow!
I might have posted that before but it bears repeating.
-
amazing.....
-
Splendid build and so quick as well 8)
-
That is stunning workmanship.
-
:o :o stunning :o :o
-
Thanks all.
I think the only structural bit left is the front steps then detailling...
I am rather stunned by that sight... :o
-
You soldered the copper wire... individual foam bricks up next? :)
-
So first tanning, then burnt mdf,now soldering.
Does anyone sit next to you on the bus?
Joking aside its nice to see how much your enjoying this project,As vehicle builds can seem a bit formulaic,at times (especially when you've someone else's deadline to meet ;)) This seems to have given you the opportunity to play with ideas and experiment for the fun of it.
So I'll keep watching and waiting for you to get your thumb out. I mean let's face it you'd never catch me dragging my feet for over a year on a project :D
-
The impression I have is that Rich H is the sort of guy everyone hopes won't sit next to them on the bus. ;)
Wonderful project though. :)
Edited for stupidity
-
madness pure madness, but also brilliant work :-*
-
Holy crap, that is a mighty build. Sometimes I fantasize about building a behemot like that but I always stop at "where shall I store it?"
-
The impression I have is that UVS is the sort of guy everyone hopes won't sit next to them on the bus.
Thanks, not sure how I earned that.
-
lol Thanks all. I am fortunate that the good lady wife appears to be ignoring the aforementioned behemoth for the moment so I need to get as much done as I can! I'm also fortunate to not always having to work to a deadline or someone else's plan. I build what I like the look of mostly.
Last time I was on a bus a small child was sick on my shoe. Not sure why I elicited that response.... I try to avoid them now (Children and busses)
I have half a plan for the portico and carvings, I'm going to use GIMP as it has a perspective correction tool to fix the photo's I've got, I'll turn them into black and white and see what happens when I engrave them. Probably won't work but if it does it'll save a lot of work. Or at least provide a base to build upon.
I'm going to make the top finials in resin I think: a) because they'll be tougher and less easily damaged and b) I'm out of plaster again (2kg dry weight gone into this so far)
Next will be the steps up to the front then it's detailing time I think.
I'm also starting to gather stuff for the force to go with this mess. Iv'e a shed load of soviets already but I'm now pondering the last levy Germans. I need a couple of units of Volkssturm and/or Hitler Youth I also need two 88s. Plan is to probably 3d print the 88s and replace with plastics as they become available. These wil be supplemented with some SS.
Game wise I've two main plans:
Big CofC 3 Soviet platoons - 1 armourd (2x IS2 and 1x OT-34/85) 1 Scout platoon and 1 Rifle platoon. facing one VS platoon and one SS platoon with a mix of HY and Heer support.
Bolt action it'll be similar - 1 armoured, 1 vet and 1 reg platoon vs 1 SS and 1 VS/Hy platoon.
Just need a HY crew for the 88s...
-
Wonderful, wonderful.
What a building.
-
Thanks!
-
You are using a gimp to build the porticos? :o Too much detail but it does explain the need to build this in your basement.
Empress have a civilian/ Volksturm 88 crew. Think it only comes with their gun though. Like you I’d be tempted to wait for the Rubicon kit. Check out the sprue photos on their forum, it’s an absolute cracker.
-
Thanks, not sure how I earned that.
:o Nor me, my apologies... I of course meant Rich H.
-

Sadly its currently planned for Q3 and I need them for September!
-
Not realised until today how ambitious and marvellous this is. Outstanding work!!!
-
Progress
And some 3d printed stuff
-
Looking good.
-
Brilliant!
-
Excellent 8)
-
Great stuff :-* :-* :-*
Loving the 88's
-
It just gets better & better :o :o :o :o
-
Cheers!
Carvings. Laser engraved into mdf
Finials. 3d printed
-
Multimedia 8)
That's what the vast majority of kits are missing (I know this isn't a kit but you get what I mean).
-
I was planning on moulding the finials but I'd have to sculpt a master
Then I found this one on thingiverse and was going to cast them...
Then I figured - just print the damn things!
Just printing a few Ionic columns to finish off the towers.
-
Very nice. Well done.
-
Main build done...
Probably!
-
Stupendous stuff! The friezes alone are fantastic :-*
-
Nice job on the carvings.
Amazing.
-
That is stupendous! :o :o Easily one of the best scenery pieces I’ve seen!
-
That is incredible :o :o - well done :-*
-
Absolutely stunning...
-
Distressing lol
-
Done
-
I am out of superlatives. This is awesome. And massive respect for building this massive thing and then taking a knife to it and "destroy" it again.
-
Knife? No... Dremel with tungsten carbide burr ;D
Need to rethink the paint, it really needs something fine textured.
-
:o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o :o

Rich, you‘re a genius! :o

Thanks!
OK Need some help on paint.
I don't like the cream colour, I'm thinking light grey (Aged limestone) and airbrush black/dark brown as soot.
I need to pick out a few blocks and obviosuly all the damage in lighter colour.
Any suggestions?

-
I remember Koln cathedral being soot over grey, but I do not have any photographs to hand.
-
This is epic.
-
Koln in the evening sun.

-
Thanks!
Maybe needs to be more light brown than cream then sooty black on top?
-
Jesus! That's impressive!
One of those finials needs a hole drilled in it to fit a Soviet banner. :)
-
Obviously trying to colour match black and white photographs is a bit difficult!
But yes it definitely looks quite black to me.
Keeping it the current colour underneath is going to be a stark contrast.
Subtle is the word here!
It's going to make or brake the final touches to this magnificent piece.
(It's made me enter the Ribble Rumble just to get a closer look!)
How about using Matt black spray cans at a distance and building up using "over spray" just letting it settle as dust?
And yes maybe a bit darker base colour.
-
Maybe these images will give some ideas:

It seems at that time the building was gray.
-
Thanks
The lower parts seem to be grey/light brown and the dark seems to be grime or soot from the fire
Note those pics are post war maybe even movie sets, that's an IS-3 in the foreground and the other buildings have been removed.
-
Yes, the top photo - footage from the feature films.
I had understood that you can use them as a model for the painting damage and zakopchonnosti building. Painters and modelers have previously solved the problem that you are facing. ;)
-
Yep thanks all good stuff!
-
And all the same the building was gray with some beige tint:

Lots of good pics in that link too - Thanks

I've gone with a mix of picnic basket and on the rocks

Gobbed smacked
:-* :-* :-* :-* :-* :-* :-* :-* :-* :-* :-* :-* :-* :-* :-* :-*
-
Epic! I am coming over to your house for a game!
-
Thanks!
Best be quick on hols tomorrow :D
Much happier with the colour (mucky stone building wasn't one of the options in wilko)
Once I return from hols I'll fire up the airbrush with some black in it and soot it up. I'll repaint the damage cream like freshly exposed stone.
-
You are doing an outstanding job, I follow your thread with amazement!
-
Good colour.
It does resemble Rakash Flesh! Probably a fraction of the price.
-
Ta
Yes much cheapness, I thin k they were £1.60 per tube and there is a fair bit left!
-
Beautiful work Rich. Have a wonderful holiday.
-
Very impressive perhaps even more impressive then the chocolate version I saw in Berlin once, at least for wargaming purposes :)
So the next step is breaking it down for casting/lasercutting/printing so you can sell kits? ;D
-
Thanks
lol no kit this time. The centre section is already getting heavy!
-
I would buy one if it WAS made of chocolate.
"Hi honey guess what I got you for your birthday?"
lol
-
I dont know if its for sale, but enquire at Rausch:

-
Progress.
-
Great work :o
-
That looks great.
Is that simply a Brown wash over Grey?
It is very effective.
-
spray of water then Agrax Earthshade - simple.
It'll be followed by airbrushed soot then the damage will be highlighted with beige to show the fresh stone under.

Very well done indeed :-*
-
Contemplating the old toothbrush splatter with beige too, to replicate the small arms damage.
-
Very good.
-
Liking the colours 8)
-
:o
-
Getting there...
-
Excellent. The paint is really bringing out all the details you have created.
-
I am repeating myself, Wow!
-
Stunning! :o
Are you planning a game(or two) with this magnificent beastie?
-
Such accuracy and such detail! You are worthy of many congratulations! Following your progress with amazement! Cheers!
-
I have a couple of events later in the year (Bolt Action Welsh Open and The Ribble Rumble) and I've a plan to host a Big CofC game at some point.
-
Can you put it on the bottom table at the Ribble Rumble please....
That way I'm bound to play on it at least once lol
-
lol I'll make sure you get to play on it ;)
Just waiting for paint to dry and making urban rubble flock mix.
-
Stunning work :-* :-* :-* :-* :-* :-*
-
Urban rubble mix
Fine and coarse
-
It’s really coming together beautifully.
-
Amazing project. The scale alone is impressive, but the detailing really makes it.
-
I am not only amazed at your skill in building this but am also amazed at the speed which you have done it. :o
-
It’s all been said but WOW! 😳
-
Ta!
First of the "white houses"
Problem is although they are 15"x8" they feel small!
-
You can see the 3 'white houses' in front.
Apparently workers houses and workshops.
The one on the right has a flat roof and seems relatively intact, the other two are just shells.
It looks like they have attempted to shore up the front wall of the left most one as it's half buried in rubble.
-
While that dries I've started on the hospital bunker. Cunningly it's designed to fit inside the white house.
Obviously I've used some license on the sizing!
-
I've offered up the white house and it's oversized, but that's really due to the scale difference. The white houses are 28mm (ish) but the Reichstag is 15mm so they are proportionally larger. I'm going to leave off the flat roofed building and move my white house to the right a little. I'll then make the second badly damaged white house (with the shored up front) a little smaller thugh that said with the top half of the fornt wall collapsed it might not need it.
Photo shows roughtly the table layout
I still need to make the bunker (leftmost circles), 'I' is just a ventilation tower.
There are also a few other non-descript workshops and so on but details are proving quite hard to find.
I also need to make the foutain walls (the D shapes), roads , bridges (no info) and the flooded subway tunnel.
-
The end in sight? Just another 5 ft of table to go
-
Better pics
-
Looking great :)
-
Very good work.
-
Great work! Even though my neck is now a funny shape from the side on photos :D
-
outstanding indeed
-
Great work! Even though my neck is now a funny shape from the side on photos :D
Only way it'd fit! lol
-
Brilliant
-
The two buildings now have basic paint but weathering them is a pain due to size and lack of any reaf features.
I plan on starting on some of the other buildings this week, I've buinker to build (personnel shelter really) and a few more of the construction buildings including odd long thin 'roofs' which were apparently to hide the workers moving to and fro.
Going to 3d printer MkV heavy tank too and apply artisitc licence to move it to the Teirgarten.
-
Very beautiful. It makes me sad to look at it even though I know how the story continues...
-
Yes, I'm reading different accounts and it was desperate and pointless waste of lives.
It makes difficult reading sometimes.
-
Started on the central fountain area. It's a raised platform with steps up either side. It's got lots of nice walls and has a building on it to break up the open areas.
-
Fountain and painted buildings
-
You have been busy!
-
Nice work.
-
Very impressive :o
-
good progress :-*
-
I do make things difficult for myself sometimes
-
Laser cutter appears to be dying. It’s struggling to cut cornflake packet card consistently, but it's >5 years old so done quite well!
New tube on order (£85) from Germany – hopefully that will get me back up to full power.
It might also be the power supply… but I’m hoping the tube will suffice! Also I think my brother has a spare…
-
Now all you need is a Flak tower ,just to check that new laser of course ;)
-
I did actually look at them but in 28mm they are hugely boring. Just a great slab of grey.
If broken down into rooms then you could I suppose fight through it, but they were never raided, they just held out and surrendered intact and largely untouched.
Even post war the attempts to blow them up where ineffective. So much so they jsut buried the remains of the Berlin zoo tower after failing to demolish it properly.
Even reduced in scale they are monstrously tall.
-
At least one of them still looms on the Vienna skyline.
-
https://bunkermeister.blogspot.com/search/label/Flak%20Tower
In 1/72 but still huge!
-
I saw it being more of a multipurpose item storage box/scenery.
You could always play medal of honour Airborne. You know Propper history just like Warlord stuff ;D
-
New lasesr tube! :D :D :D
It's got more than double the power than the old one! :D
-
My Jarvis urban mats turned up too. They aren't bad but will take some flattening out!
-
Started on the "garden"
-
I need some suggestions for the background table surface.
It needs to be portable, beige and gritty I guess. (and cheap)
I've got some Jarvis 'urban' mats but they aren't very good.
They are thick paper and don't lie flat plus they are patchy, I'm going to cut them up as roads I think.

Would textured spray paint work?
-
Painted sandpaper?
-
That basically what this is. I wonder if textured spray on cloth would work?
In the meantime... wriggly tin shed and stone setts.
Shed is corrugated card and setts are plaster cast in a laser cut mould.
-
Individual setts!
-
Indeed! Self coloured too ;)
I'm pondering making a silicone mould but it'll need a positive mould making first so it's a lot of fuss.
Might try a wax master.
-
Lots of effort really but the result is what I wanted! These are unpainted.
-
Nice, I thought you were going to be laying them.
-
Based on this pic

-
Is it clear up of debris or as barricades or protection?
-
I think it's been cleared from the koeingsplatz prior to the subway and volksdome work.
It's too consistent and disorganised for a useful barricade. I reckon it's been sorted and stored there.
There are other pics of neatly stacked slabs elsewhere too.
-
OK had an idea...
If I make a absolute shed load of scatter then throw out a cloth and pile it all up... but I will need a lot of scatter!
Thoughts?
-
Could work - doesn't need to be everywhere. Can use coloured sand too.
However, looking at your first efforts and the source picture, I want to point out there's a stone (fifth from the right), that's slightly out of place compared to the photo. Are you going to reposition it? :P
-
Already moved it - keep up at the back ;D
-
impressive .. :o
-

Wouldn't that have been after the surrender? In the final weeks the area around Berlin was a mess: they had children of 12 fighting and finally the Nero Decree (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nero_Decree), although that was generally not carried out. I'm not sure that there was much repair or clearance work going on by the time the allies got to the Reichstag.
-
The whole square had already been cleared and work started on the subway and volksdome; it was halted mid war IIRC. The victory monument had been moved to the teirgarten and all the gardens ripped up too. Its where all the small buildings infront of the Reichstag came from.
It is very possible it was post war (its been hard to tell) but I really think the stone was there before the end.
-
Busy making tiles/bricks/slabs from terracotta clay.
-
Update.
I've added the brickwork to the main building windows, I was unsure but it looks a lot better with some variation in texture.
Loving the look of the corrugated iron and 28mm posters (Grinning skull via Wargames Vault)
Also pics of the rest of the buildings and my current rubble box pile.
-
Needs more Olive groves.
-
Still wow!
-
Still wow!
What he said.
-
Thanks! Parental visit has caused delays to the building programme...
I did manage to knock up another workshop though. Pic to follow.
-
Workshed
-
Ancillary buildings
-
It’s getting better and better :o wouldn’t have thought this to be possible.
-
Excellent.
-
Great stuff!
-
Amazing stuff :o :o 8) 8)
-
Terrific build :)
-
it gets better each time
-
This is certainly one of the best builds I have seen so good in fact it makes one want to give up. Anyone who gets to game with that as terrain will be very fortunate indeed.
-
Don't give up!! All you need is time and inspiration (and an tolerant other half if applicable!) ;)
The only thing I've got that makes thing easier is my lasercutter (Which is almost cheating!) which is good for repetitive tasks and fiddly bits.
The Reichstag would be difficult without the laser cutter, you could make it from foamcore but it would take a lot longer.
The ancillary buildings, however, don't need the laser. They take about 2 hours all in - can do a how-to if there is an interest - with some foamcore, some MDF, some corrugated craft paper and some glue you can easily make similar. Only the windows on the barrel roofed building and the front props on the tin shed are laser cut.
Due to a change of circumstances (A good one!) the Reichstag building will be up for sale at the end of the year.
-
Thank you for the motivation. Time and money are sadly always issues. Gosh I can't believe you are willing to part with it - no doubt you will get some play out of it first and also get a good price for it.
-
I'd prefer to keep it really but for the sake of domestic bliss it has to go lol
It wouldn't get used very often in reality.
-

There's only so many times one can burn down Berlin... ;D
-
Seriously impressive
-
Once this s complete you need to do a "drone" style video fly round and some panorama rotatable ones - the full Great Devourer StreetView (TM).
-
Sounds complicated...
-
Rich, you are an absolute madman! And I mean that is the best way possible. A totally stunning build.
Once done, I would send a picture of the model to the German company that built the laser cutter. I think they would be incredibly touched to see what someone did with their product.
-
A truly fantastic project :) - I hope we get to see the layout in its entirety, preferably with a game going on before you sell it on.
-
Thanks all!
It's a Chinese company that made the laser cutter - the Germans omnly provided a replcement laser tube ;) (And that was Chinese too!)
-
Test layout
Don't mind the blue! I need to add another building between the Reichstag and the fountain. There will be a road on both sides.
Thd cloth will be grey felt with brown paint and a shed load of loose scatter.
-
looking good
-
Painted the fountain
-
Last building for the Reichstag table started
-
Is there really ever a last building?
Or is it just the point that the Mrs decides your extracting bodily fluids with the time your spending with your toy's?
I know the answer in our house :D
-
lol very true.... it's the last planned building ;)
Fortunately the Mrs has daft hobbies (Bees, spinning, weaving, and knitting) so she is very tolerant of mine!
-
lol very true.... it's the last planned building ;)

So what you're saying is she can make a fine sweater out of bumblebee fuzz? Now THAT'S talent! lol
-
lol if only. The wool based stuff starts with a sack full of stinky, greasy fleece...
-
Evidently a match made in heaven.
-
:-*
I painted it last night with textured paint then hit it with undercoat. the spray has slightly eaten the foam but I like the effect. Paint later!
-
lol if only. The wool based stuff starts with a sack full of stinky, greasy fleece...
I have in fact done the whole spinning fleece and making yarn (and knitting) once during one of my many art classes all those years ago.
Once was enough, thanks.
-
Unfortunately so has she but not before she bought several stinky fleeces. But it does give me a good lever for my hobbies!
-
Rich, I been away a while, but clicked on this. Read page 1 and thought 'nahhh, no way', the realized there were 24 pages. Clicked through them all and it is astounding. It should be a museum diorama.
Great work, cant wait to see a batrep on this.
-
Just finding this thread. Amazing! (I know, a complete understatement) I hope to see this beauty in a game.
-
Finally got an outing at the Bolt Action Welsh Open a couple of weeks ago
-
Wow!
That is impressive.
-
Fantastic! Such a Labour of love! :o
-
Brilliant! 8)
Any chance we'll be able to gawk at this at Crisis?
-
Not unless someone buys it and takes it along ;)
(It is for sale)
-
Outstanding! Many congrats for your patience and devotion to this great work!
-
Superb :-* Bravo :o
-
Finally the truth can be told and the historical record righted! It was Australians who stormed the Reichstag. ;)
-
I know I've said this before but seeing this is very strange as it is a building and area I know. It's a fantastic model and a great reminder of how horrendous the second world war truly was.
-
Thanks.
Its lost scheduled outing is next weekend
-
Not unless someone buys it and takes it along ;)
(It is for sale)
Don't forget to hit up wargaming shops and clubs, as they might be better-positioned to buy such a huge terrain piece.
-
Yep, one suggestion was Warlord HQ.
-
How can you let that go, it’s a brilliant build! I’d be digging a new sub-basement just to store it :)
-
TBH I don't see it getting used very often. The supporting scenery will be but not the main buiding.
Want to buy it? ;)
-
I think just keep it as your dining table's centrepiece. Wouldn't make sense not to.
-
I'd think about spraying it brown and seeing whether you couldn't sneak it into that museum with the chocolate one and do a surreptitious swap. :) At least the wife would be happy.
Let's hope it goes to a good home, it's a fabulous bit of modelling.
-
splendid work, i like that
-
Still for sale.... any offers considered!
-
:o :o :o :o
For sale? Tempting ...
-
Yep. Definitely for sale!
I've another project that is taking up all my time and money...
-
OMG! This project can melt your heart! :-*
I wish you spend happy Christmas Holidays with your family and to your new member all the best!
-
Congratulations Rich!
I suspect even painted powder blue, the wife will guess if you try to repurpose the Reichstag as a crib or play pen.
-
lol
Doll's house... his dad plays with wardollies so why not ;D
-
Just for info the insides are plain mdf
-
You should put some wallpaper up in there..
-
Yep. Definitely for sale!
I've another project that is taking up all my time and money...
That's great news, Rich! Congratulations!
