Title: Need help finding figures
Post by: Truscott Trotter on April 13, 2018, 12:51:28 AM
for a 28mm Vickers MMG team in British naval uniforms

Assuming Airey Neave is correct at Calais the Royal Marine landing party came with or acquired a Vickers (assuming he is not mixing it up with Lewis gun?)

Have tried all the usual suspects, pulp, copplestone, footsore etc.

Happy to do a bit of kitbashing - head swaps etc. 1908  pattern webbing preferred.

suggestions welcome

Erm well thats to be decided - I could just to some Glengarry headswaps as the only unit in kilts in 1940 were the Seaforths of the 51st Div.

Still there are some rather spiffing WW1 models of Scots in Glengarry and kilt around and the A&S at Calais may have decided to don their ceremonial gear as they had been left to die by Churchill

Brigade Games has a WWI German Sailors with Maxim Gun set.  You'd need to swap out the Maxim for a Vickers and head swaps to replace the German matelot hats with RN sailors' caps.  Wouldn't be perfect but could be close enough...

I think that honour actually went to 1/ Cameron Highlanders, who also wore ToS bonnets not Glengarrys. They paraded with them when inspected in France by the King (who awarded them their blue hackle), they wore them at Escaut and La Bassee, and they were still wearing them on the Mole at Dunkirk.

Possibly a myth, but French girls in St.Valéry were apparently wearing dresses made from Cameron Tartan in 1944, after digging up the ones buried by 4/ Camerons before they surrendered in 1940. Prior to that they and 1/ Camerons had both used 'guerrilla' tactics to defeat the WD on the matter of kilts.

Plenty of photos out there, often mis-labelled 'Black Watch'. Seaforth Tartan is quite distinctively different though, even in b+w photos, due to the white lines in the tartan.

Very true - about 3 years ago I spent a fair bit of time researching the kilt wearers and of course it was the Cameron Highlanders
and I could do some with ToS as well as helmets but......
.......... they were not at Calais but the Argyll and Sutherlanders were!  lol

I've made a naval landing party for the Follies range. With a Lewis gunner, and a motorcycle rider.Although they're technically Free Polish (wanted someone less obvious for a Pulp landing party) I suppose as I've Vickers machine gun cast up anyway I could always add a crew to the figures that need finishing for Partizan.( If that's helpful)

Mark.

Thanks Mark your kind offer sounds very interesting.
I have just finished reading Flames of Calais and the RM work with the Vickers was heroic in a battle full of heroic moments.
Would love to be able to put it on the tabletop - please PM details.
Cheers
