Title: Greek myth project
Post by: Catullus on April 22, 2018, 04:50:06 PM
I started a ‘Greek myth’ project a while ago. It’s currently on hold but I thought I might as well start a thread to show the the work I did up to that point. Perhaps it will inspire me to continue!

Anyhoo, first up is a bunch of GW beastmen from eBay converted into satyrs:

The full step by step is here: http://nerdlard.blogspot.co.uk/2018/04/satyrs.html (http://nerdlard.blogspot.co.uk/2018/04/satyrs.html)

Next, some skeletons. These were originally from the classic ’Skeleton Horde’ box set. Stripped and repainted twenty-five years later, they finally look like how my early teen self wanted to paint them!

I’ll add more pictures as I sort through them.

They have come out very well indeed.
 :-* :-*

I did the very same thing, using old Beastmen and Skellies from my fantasy collection as an easy start on the Greek bandwagon.
I am currently doing the same with my Norse.
Great minds, eh?

Love those satyrs , think I got some foundry ones in the loft and if I remember rightly they are very dainty looking?

Thanks for the kind words, everyone.

3 fingers – I think 'dainty' is the right word for the Foundry satyrs! I was very tempted by them but the 'Harryhausen' looks of the GW miniatures won out.

Next up, it’s a set of Victrix Hoplites:

Is it just me or does that bloke in the middle look like Matthew Kelly?

For anybody who is interested, there is a step-by-step on my blog: http://nerdlard.blogspot.co.uk/2018/05/hoplites.html (http://nerdlard.blogspot.co.uk/2018/05/hoplites.html)

More to follow soon, when I sort out some new pictures.

My first thought was the more heroic Russell Crowe a few centuries earlier than Gladiator, now all I can see is Matthew Kelly!

Anyway, those Hoplites are really nice! love the shield on the left!

I've managed to miss your first posting! The skeleton horde box. Ah, the days when you got a full army in a box. Bone chariot and all!

Thanks for the kind words, everybody. After my first visit to Salute this year, I decided to start up this project again. Here are some more skeletons, from Bears Head Miniatures.

Although taller, they mix well with the old Citadel plastic skellybobs:

There are a few WIP pix on my blog if anybody is interested: https://nerdlard.blogspot.com/2019/08/greek-skeletons.html (https://nerdlard.blogspot.com/2019/08/greek-skeletons.html)

Askellad – as it happens, I bought a box of 'em at Britcon last weekend! There are some glaring anatomical errors so I'm going to use them for parts. I liked the accessories such as the helmets and shields though. I'll get a lot of use out of the kit, but probably not in the way that was intended…

It's back to humans now, so here are some skirmishers. First, some slingers with willies from Redoubt’s venerable Trojan Wars range:

Next, some nicely-proportioned archers from Victrix (with headswaps from other Victrix sets for variety):

Well, we have some naked guys waving some long flexible things - are they their "Trojans" they are waving?  The one second to the right looks lke he is saying, " Hey baby, I remembered my Trojans".

Nice figures.  I particularly like the skellies.

Thanks, everybody.

Nervisfr: don’t wait! Time won’t wait for you.

Here are a few ‘men of bronze’; minions to go with my as-yet-unpurchased Talos model. They didn’t look very promising to start with but they turned out OK in the end.

I’ve put a walkthrough of how I painted the miniatures on my blog in case it’s of interest to anybody: https://nerdlard.blogspot.com/2019/08/men-of-bronze.html (https://nerdlard.blogspot.com/2019/08/men-of-bronze.html)
