Title: The German A7V - a visit to the German Tank Museum
Post by: Metternich on April 29, 2018, 12:09:38 AM
A wonderful episode of the Youtube cast The Great War, relating specifically to the German A7V tank.  The narrator visits the German Tank Museum at Munster, talks to the curator about the A7V, and they enter the mockup.

Went to Bovington at the weekend for Tiger Day but also checked out all their WW1 stuff.

Thank you for posting the video link very interesting. Time well spent watching it, a museum on my list to visit at some point!

I’ve seen Mephisto when it was at the Canberra War Memorial and it would look scary if I was armed with a tin hat and 303  :)...

I love in the commentary and I’m paraphrasing “on flat ground it ran well but it couldn’t cross trenches and shell holes very well” now let’s just look at the topography of the western front hehehehe...

Nice! A relative of mine got to crawl about Mephisto in Queensland in the late ‘seventies. Australia has the bragging rights on the only original one in existence. The A7V may have been a clunky dead end in terms of tank design but it certainly inspired the brutalist schhol of architecture. It’s the sort of thing you can imagine being used as a municipal library in the 1960s.

- Perhaps a (very slow) travelling library with a very harsh fines system...

The A7V was not that slow. There is a wonderful film of an A7V travelling down a road at speed. Sturmbataillon Rohr did not want Beutepanzer British Mk IVs, as they were too slow compared to the A7V. British tanks could not keep up with the Sturmtruppen.
