Title: Woolly Chaps
Post by: Plynkes on May 05, 2018, 09:27:17 AM
Not altogether familiar with what various Old West Ranges are out there so I'm just gonna straight out ask here. Does anybody make a cowboy or bandit ruffian wearing woolly chaps? Or do I need to get regular chaps and woolly them up myself with some greenstuff?

This is the kind of thing I mean...

Gorgon Studios does a lovely "Lucky" Ned Pepper straight out of the recent True Grit, both mounted and dismounted versions :)

The only issue is you will have to order him from the States.

Alternatively there is one in one of the packs from the old Foundry Wild West range sculpted by Copplestone.

Ooh, Mattie Ross, Reuben and LaBoeuf too.

I fear you have just cost me rather a lot of money, Nick. Damn those Excise Men. Can I borrow the use of your gang of 18th Century smugglers for a bit?

Ta.

 lol

Of course. ;)

They are rather nice figures aren't they? I purchased Rooster, La Boeuf and Lucky Ned a while back and was not disappointed with them. They look like Mike Owen sculpts to me.

Are you getting these for the LPL or are you saddling up for a journey into the Old West?

I have been reading True Grit and fallen in love with it (Ned Pepper is described as wearing woolly chaps, much like Barry Pepper in the second movie version). The John Wayne version was on the telly the other day, and I watched it with my dad. We both thoroughly enjoyed it and it made me want to read the book. Just fancied painting the characters from the book for a bit of fun. I wasn't thinking about the LPL, but doing it this year is probably what has made me want to paint things outside of my usual wheelhouse. I suppose one could make an entry from it. Make the team the Pepper gang (Lucky Ned, the coward Tom Chaney, the Permalee brothers and the Original Greaser Bob) and have the three heroes as 'set dressing' as they aren't enough to make a team by themselves.

I was planning to do the whole thing with stand-ins and conversions (and little Mattie had me a bit stumped, if I'm honest). I had no idea you could get actual versions of the characters from the newer version. It's actually a little disappointing, as I was looking forward to doing the conversions, but there's no way I'm not getting them now.  ;D

Dunno about LaBoeuf. Mattie says in the book that he's all duded up, like a cowboy from a Wild West show, and it sounds as if he looks like a proper charlie from her description. Not sure the Matt Damon wardrobe really conveys that. I may keep looking for a LaBoeuf, though I shall probably buy the Gorgon one anyway too.

Probably a bit late in the day for this year's LPL now, though. Maybe next year.

Crusader do the John Wayne version:

Britannia do a cowboy in woolly chaps on foot and mounted too re your original question (I know we've moved past that now).

Oh yes, I believe he's another must-have. Thanks, Paul. This will turn into quite the project if I am not careful.

Just for completeness' sake, I have also discovered that Great Escape Games also do a one-eyed U.S. marshal figure (curiously named "Bridges"  ;)), quite similar but in a different pose to the Gorgon Studios one.

If you want every one eyed Marshall out there then Knuckleduster Miniatures has previewed a foot and mounted John Wayne version coming out shortly.

You might also find some suitable figures in their range. The 1/48th scale "Gunfighters Ball" figures fit perfectly well alongside most current 28s.

Mini-Figs used to do a cowboy with woolly chaps, but that is 25mm.
I never could take seriously such a figure after seeing Bob Hope wear them in a Western.

Several of the Foundry Old West cowboys have wooly chaps.
