Got an extensive commission under way for the Tonkin campaign that will hopefully include several ships and some more normal terrain. First off is the Vipre (or a representation of it). It's not a 100% accurate model of the Vipre but close enough to represent it or something similar of the period.
The hull was filament printed and the sides will be clad with styrene which will also carry on for the sides. The 9" Dhalgrens will be remounted on suitable mounts so they can traverse 360 degrees. There will be removable masts with limited rigging to allow for play-ability and plenty of deck clutter such as gratings etc but not so much that it gets in the way of figures.
Still lots of details to do but here is the hull with decking applied (still needs weathering) and the start of the wheel house. A flying bridge and upper wheel house was requested although it's not on the Vipre. The wheel house will be sanded down a bit as it's been decided it's too tall as it is. The figures are from my Boxer Rebellion range and are mounted on 20mm bases.
The whole ship is 700mm in length from the tip of the stern to the front of the ram, anything smaller wouldn't really work.

An interesting project to be sure. What are you using for those deck guns?
-
Thanks. They are from HLBSC (Honourable Lead Boiler Suit Company) and are very nice.
-
That's a monster, but you're right, anything smaller wouldn't have the same impact or be as usable from a gaming perspective.
-
Superb model, can't wait to see the rest of the commission
-
Fantastic start Jim as always! Is the deck going to be a playable skirmish board in itself or is it more like a huge piece of eye-candy terrain?

Thanks :)
It's a playable piece and as far as I know the table it will be used on is quite a big one. I've potentially got a few others to do so I don't think they'll just be static.
-
Man, you are really cranking out wondeful models at a new level since you went solo!
-
It is epic :o 8)
-
Taking shape nicely now all the sections are put together
-
Thanks all :)
Will sort out the wheelhouse and some deck details today.
-
Deck details have begun. The main ones will be done first and then secondary ones afterwards if it looks like they will be needed.

ok thank you I did not see them ashamed me :D
-
Want some? ;)

Got the deck guns and mountings sorted. Decided to keep the Marsilly carriage and alter them a bit. The trunion brackets have been left off so the guns can be painted separately. I’ll finish a few more deck details then look at the sides of the hull.

Thanks chaps :)
-
Very nice attention to detail.
-
Really good
-
..Nailed it...

Thanks :)
So, after two failed attempts at getting the hull sides right it's third time lucky. With any luck it'll be getting it's first coats of paint next week.

Still a couple of little things to tidy up but I'm happy with the process and will tidy everything once it's all in place.
-
Love how neat your work is everything looks very uniform and precise particularly love the stairs any advice on making similar stairs as I have struggled in the past.
-
Some good progress there - like the details on the locker
-
Starting to really take shape
-
I’m very impressed with the hull cladding - and am not surprised it took an effort to get so right
What thickness plasticard did you? Did you heat it? What glue? So many questions ..... :)
-
Thanks chaps :)

Two layers of 0.75mm. No heat applied though I could've used hot water. Normal dichloromethane (plastic weld) as the hull itself is printed in pla filament.
-
Thanks - and interesting. The doubled skin is very effective 8)
-
In the long run it's easier but it takes more time.
-
Its really taking shape nicely now. ;D
-
Some very neat work there. It certainly surpasses anything I could do!
-
Thanks :)
The rear is done apart from the strip details (have to wait for material to arrive).

best wishes! I am looking forward to seeing more of your awesome construction. So inspiring and so perfectly cut
-
Will have an update later this week. After the head cold I had to work out of town for a bit which has put me back a touch.
-
Well, this update took a bit longer than I thought (head cold, wife in hospital for a bit then wife dropping hoover on the prow making me start it again lol )
So, the prow is now done, just needs a bit of a clean up (the orange is primer filler) then I can finish off the hull details and paint it. Hooray!

Lovely work once again.
Sorry to read about your wife in hospital. I hope all is well now!
Best regards,
Helen
-
Thanks chaps and Helen :)
Yeah, she’s fine now (gallstone) but has a drastic dietary change and isn’t too happy lol
-
Thanks chaps and Helen :)

Oh dear, best wishes on her recovery.
-
That prow is sharp! 8)
-
Looking good though, very nice lines, particularly given the hoover incident.
-
Looking amazing as always, sending best wishes to the wife
-
Thanks chaps and Helen :)
Hull is done apart from a few little details such as the anchor etc but it needed a light coat of primer on it to see if there was anymore touching up to do. Masts have been started as well. There is a fighting top in these pictures but it won't be on the final model (clients choice). The deck still needs a touch of paint and the guns needs finishing off as well (they only have their base coats on). Then the hull will be going a very, very dark grey and the interior hull will be white. These a good opportunity for some lovely weathering and I'm looking forward to doing it.

Cracking work, really like the shape you have achieved.
I can't remember, is this a real ship or from your imagination?
-
Cheers Colin :)
It's based on one called the Vipre but has elements from others. The info, although plentiful is a bit sketchy, mainly etchings from the period but large sized images.
-
splendid guy :-* :-*
-
Looking great James.
Best regards,
Helen
-
outstanding! Hope your wife is better now
-
Amazing ship!
How much are you charging for one of these, just a ballpark figure?
-
Thanks chaps and Helen :)
Munindk, I’ve sent you a pm.

Main hull details are done and the base coats have been applied. Unfortunately the hull details can't be seen because of the mattness of the black but that'll change when the drybrushing starts.

Still the finer details to go on but that'll happen after the painting of the hull (inside and out).
-
This ship is absolutely fantastic! I can't wait to see it finished.
-
Absolutely incredible! Sterling work sir. What a beautiful model.
She’d be the flagship of anyone’s collection.
-
Many thanks chaps :)
The prow is done and the rest should be finished Tues/Weds. Still a couple of weathering bits to do but they need to be done once the whole thing is complete. Deck steps are in the garage after having a final cot of paint on them.

Very tidy job :-* :-* :-* :-* :-*
One question though what did you use to made the rounded edge on the gunwale?
-
Cheers Colin :)
It's half round stryene strip bent to the right shape.
-
Looking great, how much more to do on it
-
Fantastic work!! ;)
-
Thanks :)
95% there now, a few details to go on with some limited rigging and flags.

James, this project was fantastic and inspiring, as your craftsmanship always is!
So how about tackling an old subject and building a Samurai castle....so I can get a step-by-step guide for doing my own!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ;) ;D :-*
-
I forgot to post some finished photos so apologies for the delay :)
Will have another boat or two to do after Salute but not sure which ones yet.

It looks more like a scale display piece than a wart games model.
I had to strike a balance between the two, hence the simplified rigging etc.

First Rate!

The flying bridge looks much better with railings now. :-*

That's a beauty!
