Title: Indian Mutiny buildings
Post by: has.been on May 10, 2018, 10:16:04 PM
A few snaps of two buildings built for a friend. They are scratch built, apart from the cupola which he had spare from a kit.

Smashing. I really like the rugs, not sure why. It's the little touches that make things shine, I guess.

Seems we had a little technical trouble in the posting of this and ended up with two versions of the thread going at once, somehow. I merged them into one as they both had their own comments. Seemed the sensible thing to do.

What he said! Love the material and the flowers. They really bring them to life.

First, thanks for all the nice comments.
Second, thanks Plynkes for sorting out my technical mess. I do not do 'E-leck-trickery' well.
Third,  buildings are foam board cut to shape with a sharp bladed knife. The rough building shape is wood/PVA glued together  (pinned over-night until it sets), then trimmed to get the dilapidated/run down look.
Remove some patches of the outer paper/thin card. Draw the stone pattern with a biro Brush on a mixture of thinned  filler & glue (wood or PVA) leave it overnight to dry.
Paint it all over (I use a dark brown match-pot similar to burnt umber)When that is dry do 2 or 3 dry brushes of lighter browns ending in almost white, but with almost no pressure. Try to dry-brush downwards at a diagonal (the brain expects to see shadows & knows that straight downwards only happens at mid-day.)
Thin a colour of your choice and apply sparingly (this helps define bricks, weathering, staining etc. Then comes the 'titavating'  put flock, bushes  rubble, rugs etc.  on. If there are any 'bad bits' showing trough you can use these to help hide them.
The rubble is the off cuts  made smaller with a pair of scissors.
The 'rugs' are courtesy of adverts for shirts & dresses in magazines. Cut them out crumple them, unfold and glue in place.

Hope this helps. It does mean that not all your buildings are identical, unlike commercial products,
which is what I like.  It also helps to keep studying the 'really good at it' guys (you know who they are) I do like peoples BIG projects, but most of us could find room for a few WW2 Russian hovels, but not the Lenningrad tractor factory.
