Got another build on the go, this time it's a fortified manor house for the WotR.
Basic plan and orthographic sketch but some of the details will change as the build progresses (it's more to get sense of the building than an actual plan).
The base size will probably change size and be extended to the right a bit. The engineers block is representing the gatehouse until I know fully what I'm doing for it.
I think I'm going to print the windows/door frame in the stone section but we'll see how that goes when I get round to it.

Wow! That’s an impressive start!! :-*
-

-
Looking good jim :-* :-* :-* :-* :-* :-*
Going to be an interesting roof
-
A very good start, & I too will be interested to see how it goes, up to your usual high standards no doubt.
-
WOW.I cant wait to see it finished. I hope you plan to post pictures of the work in progress.
Erik
-
Nice start. Are we going to see some more lentils? lol lol
-
It looks like you are using sheet styrene for the structure- is that your normal choice for these projects? For some reason I thought you were a foamcore guy. In any event, just the kind of project I look forward to following.
-
Thanks chaps :)

Depends on the job, this is 1.5mm mounting card.

There might be a few lol
I hope you plan to post pictures of the work in progress.
Certainly will :)
-
That's very neat work mate. I'm constantly amazed at how precise your stuff is, though I shouldn't be having seen it first hand.
-
Is this a gift for me? :)
Awww. Thanks James :D
-
Looking forwards to this! It looks somewhat like Stokesay Castle, but that has a tower. ;)
-
It is coming out very nice, I'll be following your progress! Cheers!
-
Looks great already! Can't wait to see the final results!
-
Nice sketch plans also - I'm confident of seeing a lovely piece of work by the end of your build if the start is any indication. Thanks for sharing.
-
Thanks chaps :)
Should have an update on this later tomorrow.
Is this a gift for me? :)
No >:D
-
OOoh, now that IS tasty!! Am watching with interest.
Simon.

He needs to make us one each... with a generous quantity discount ;)

That's a mighty fine looking already. very eager to see how this proceeds.
-
Nice structure. I'm reminded of Aydon castle, Northumberland.
-
Following with keen interest.

very nice !

Apparently he is going to release it as an MDF kit in the near future. ;) :)

MDF is like 3d sculpture For miniature it has no soul lol
I think an MDF kit would just end up looking like the pics at the start of this thread but with doors, windows and a roof.
It's not till the individual details are all added and the craftsmanship applied that the building starts to take on any character.
MDF is ok as a basic starting point, but you have to breath life into them or else they just look flat and mass produced.

You didn't, I'm fine lol

lol You're a naughty boy lol
Got started on some of the larger details. Stonework for the timber section and started on the timber itself. None of it is properly painted yet. I'm drawing some of the stone windows to be printed (more on which later).

-
It’s going to be magnificent 8)
-
I like what I see :)
-
Thanks chaps :)
Gonna print, distress then cast the stone windows for the stone area. The advantage being (apart from overall speed) is that the drawing can be altered to allow for less or more bays or even be scaled to a different size. It's 30mm long, 20mm high and 5mm deep. The mortar joints seem big but they re only 0.5mm wide so we'll see when it gets printed.
-
I like your use of the printed components, printing, distressing then casting should give you a good visual consistency without looking too 'manufactured', if that makes sense.

It does make sense and hopefully it'll work lol
Nearly finished with the timber work on the house and the window is printed and temporarily in-situ (it'll be moulded tomorrow and casts made from it along with some smaller versions).

-
That looks good, very good. The mullions would be a bugger otherwise.
-
I really like the window 8)
-
I second liking that window. It’s aces!
-
Oh yes, mullioned window really sets it in its timeframe!
Simon.
-
The lower right stone looks like Wills. Not sure about the white one.
-
Thanks gents :)
What are you using for the stonework?
It looks like some kind of embossed plasticard or something.
If so then it's a particularly nice one - which is it?
The light brown one is from EMA and the white one is from a small model shop in Japan. Haven't seen it elsewhere but I haven't really looked for it.
-
That EMA stuff looks very nice. I have some O scale Plastruct stone pattern sheet styrene and I don't think it is as nice.
-
Roofs are pretty much done (sans chimneys and ridges). Quoins and tender to go on the main hall then this bit can be painted. Windows will be added to the inside afterwards.
After that it’ll be onto the walls, gatehouse and stable block. The. The ground work.

Great work Jim
But printing the windows is cheating!
-
This is coming together very nicely. :-*
-
Very nice James
I like how you’ve got the main elements of the original sketch onto a smaller footprint without it looking cramped while retaining the overall vision. That can be difficult to achieve. 8) :-*
-
Thanks chaps :)

Shhh, I won't tell if you don't ;)

Mainly by accident really lol
-
very nice construction. :-*
-
Thanks :)
Started work on the outer walls. Still needs a bit of filling and fiddling though. I’ll make a start on the gatehouse tomorrow.

all looks very good except perhaps the support pillars inside the walls rather than outside but you probably have your reasons for that
-

I've seen a few that have them on the inside but also my thought was that the builders were going to make it higher with the inclusion of a stables/shed but the money ran out and so the owner had to settle for a short wall with a couple of protrusions lol
-
Nice section of wall. Is the core resin or foam?
-
Internal buttresses would make sense as counterforts to support against lateral force exerted from the outside of the wall.

You mean in case someone comes a knockin' :D
-
Nice section of wall. Is the core resin or foam?
Sorry Gary, missed this. It's foamcore for this one but the next might be foamex (high impact density polystyrene I think).
-
This is looking really good. I really like the window.
-
Looking great. I really like the wall. What did you make the merlons out of?
-
Thanks. They have been machined from chemiwood (hard, resinous compound) and then distressed by mashing them together with some concrete scraps.
Should have the gatehouse roughed out later today.
-
Still working on the gatehouse (wasn't happy with the shape of the first go) so I’ve painted the Norman walls and started to add the windows. The windows have had no cleaning after coming off the printer. The mesh at the back is brass and added afterwards (along with the black card). The main window is lasered with microstrip details.

Beaut.

The windows look great but I really like the plaster (stucco?). The texture and colour is perfect.

+1
-
you also made counterfeit money lol lol
beautiful window :-*
-
Thanks chaps :)
you also made counterfeit money lol lol
Shhh, it's a secret ;)
Although I might have to make larger denominations if it's going to work lol
-
Looking great and like the contrast of the older hall (and mullioned windows) and the more timber-framed recent wing.
Simon.
-
The windows look perfect :-* :-* :-* :-* :-* :-*
I may have missed it but I take it you printed the door as well?
-
That looks superb - those windows work a treat too.
Although I might have to make larger denominations if it's going to work lol
No might about it :D
-
Cheers fellas :)
I may have missed it but I take it you printed the door as well?
Yes, to keep it the same style as the windows.
-
The hall section is complete so now I'll move onto the courtyard/gatehoue etc.

-
Lovely work mate! :-*
-
The painting has really brought it to life.
-
Terrific! :-*
-
Many thanks gents, much appreciated :)
-
that building is something very special - well done that man...
-
Excellent work. I like the idea of the old and new sections fitting together. The woodwork is particularly fine.
-
The stone colour depends on the location a lot of the time. You'll see grey much more frequently in the north of England, large parts of Wales and in Scotland.
-
Superb stuff James 8) 8) 8) :-* :-* :-*
-
Cheers again fellas :)
The grey grey is not as grey as the grey because of the lighting ;)
-
Splendid work, James! :-*
-
very very nice indeed
-
superb scenery piece, congratulations!
-
James, I wonder why you built this from cardboard as that's not among your standard materials so far. I know that architectural modelling quite often uses good cardboard to build from , but are there any other reasons you used it or was it just at hand when you start? This material tends to warp easily when using plaster or a wet colour mix on it (which you didn't), but it's easy to work with on the other hand.
-
Thanks all :)

I quite like the ease of being able to make the shapes and long walls slightly wonky, gives it a sense of realism :)
-
So, gatehouse is done (apart from the gate) and the outer walls have begun. Different from the first iteration as I wasn’t entirely happy with the way they looked. These new ones will be given a similar treatment as the Norman hall.

-
Awesome! Now you need to make some more outbuildings to go with it... Where is the lord of the manor going to keep his horses? You need stables!
-
James
thats looks very tasty and suitably impressive!
Love the gatehouse - are outer walls going to have stonework or rendered?
Simon.
-
Luverly stuff! :D
-
It is coming out very impressive!
Eager to see how you'll finish the walls, will there be any walkway?
I'm also sure you're going to spice the yard with some cute little thingies ;)
-
Very nice, Great to see a pringles container as well. Every modellers friend. lol
-
Magnifique ! :-* :-* :-*
-
Absolutely masterful construction and painting, love it.... you're also making me wish I had a 3D printer, those windows & doors are neat.
-
Many thanks gents :)
You need stables!
Ah! I knew I forgot something :)
are outer walls going to have stonework or rendered?
Rendered the same as the Norman hall but a slightly different colour.
Eager to see how you'll finish the walls, will there be any walkway?
I'm also sure you're going to spice the yard with some cute little thingies
Maybe. There’s plenty of precedence not to have a walkway though and yes, there will be lots of little details for the eye to soak up :)
Great to see a pringles container as well. Every modellers friend. lol
I’ve got them everywhere lol
-
Coming along nicely
-
Looking grand 8)
IIRC the wall at Stokesay didn’t include a walkway. ???
-
Looking extremely good already. It's going to be spectacular with the groundwork and accessorising ;) :)
-
Wonderful work.
-
Coming along fine! :)
IIRC the wall at Stokesay didn’t include a walkway. ???
The walls at Stokesay are much reduced in height (although AFAIK not reduced in depth), but if they did have walkways, they would have been timber, much like those English Heritage built themselves on other castles.
Stokesay is in the Welsh Marches, so right into the start of the 15th Century it needed to be defensible; in later centuries not so much.
-
Fabulous stuff James 8) 8) 8) 8)
-
Damn good. :-* :-*

Magnificent :-*
-
Great build, Stokesay Castle does come to mind.
-
Many thanks again chaps :)
All done and will soon be winging its way to its new home. There might appear to be a gap between the main hall and the ground but that’s because David wants the main hall removable. Figures are Perry for scale.
but also I don't...
Look away now ;D

Lovely work. :-* :-* :-*
-
Awesome! I see you did the stables too.
What colours did you use for the courtyard ground? I know of all the questions I could ask that's the most boring, but I want to know....
-
Brilliant!
-
Beautiful ! :-*
-
Marvellous piece of work.
-
Cheers fellas :)
What colours did you use for the courtyard ground?
The base gloop is a grey/brown and I brought it up by drybrushing with a light brown/green and tans and there’s a few browny ink washes there as well.
-
Glorious James :-* :-*
Being super picky, I do wonder if the roof slates look a tiny bit flat and regular for the period. Would it be possible to put some kind of sludgy solution over them, or a thick PVA layer, to make them look and feel, I don’t know... a little less ‘definite’? A bit more blended in? (Difficult to describe exactly what I mean. Except that they perhaps look a little too neat and crisp to my eye?)
Just saying... ;) :)
-
I do get what you mean but my anal eye for detail wouldn’t let me lol
-
Okay, that's enough about your anal eye... ;D ;)
-
Beautiful
-
Very nice indeed. Just pop it in the post my good man!
-
Cracking mate! :o
-
That looks fantastic. Not just the end result but, the care you have taken to document your build. Brilliant result and a valuable resource.
-
Outstanding :-*
-
Can't find words of praise, you made one more masterpiece! :o Congrats!
Some pics seem as been taken from a real place!
Fine groundwork! A few words about how you did the cobblestones front and back of the gatehouse?
-
Awesome work!
-
Many thanks fellas, much appreciated :)

Thanks :-)
Unfortunately not (not part of the brief).

Truly beautiful! :-*
There's plenty of possible scenarios for such small manors.
In a large multi-players game two years ago we displayed a little family manor on a small table separate from the main battlefields (gaming tables). Only three players who had interest in this place knew the road from the main tables = were allowed to go there with their troops (the Lady of the manor, and her two "husbands" the first of whom had been supposed dead). It was an interesting spot for diplomacy and negotiation between them, away from the larger battles around in the gaming room.
