Another little commission on the go of a Japanese spa or onsen. It's a bit made up as there's not much info I could find about a spa for the sengoku period and having to shrink down to the requested base size means it has to be fairly compact.
The sketch should make sense for the layout and I've started on the buildings. The vast majority of the rest will be ground work.

That's a good start. It'll be interesting to see how you take on the pool. I've no doubt it'll be good though!

This should be good!

All of the above :D
-
Good start
How are you going to make the bamboo fence?
-
very interesting ;D how will you make the stones of the road??
-
Thanks chaps :)
How are you going to make the bamboo fence?
Dunno yet, there's several options and it might not even be bamboo.
how will you make the stones of the road??
Carved styrene probably.

Would skewers be too regular?

Would skewers be too regular?
sorry i do not understand my english is bad :?

Kabab sticks ;)
And no, they don't scale right (to my eye). Will be painting the buildings today (the woodwork at least) but still pondering the best fence solution. I've got plenty of Japanese examples it's just a matter of choosing what feels right for the project.
-
I need a relaxing day in an Onsen :D And yours looks awesome already! Looking forward to the finishing.

-
Very interesting build - thanks for sharing.
Like Paperschnitzel, I could do with a day relaxing in an onsen. Fat chance of that around here though. :(
-
Promising, looking nice!!... as always James!! ;)
-
Depending on what style of fence you'll settle on, maybe some cheap bamboo or seagrass placemats might work- either cut to size or as source for raw materials?
-
Thanks again :)
Started painting the buildings and bits until the fence gets resolved.

No, because they look like what they are unfortunately.

Fast progress! 8)

Looking really good ,🤔🤔
-
It's coming on really well, as expected ;)
The oldest unmodernised onsen I've been in was built around the 1750s, so hardly a perfect analogue, but it had a pretty similar styling and layout to what you've planned. The only sìgnificant difference was that the spring pool fed into a split bamboo chute, which diverted the water into a large barrel bath- to regulate the ~65°c water that comes out from the ground and get it closer to a 40°c-ish hot bath temperature. Otherwise your layout feels really good, the amount and size of buildings is spot on 👌
-
Thanks chaps :)
Will have the buildings painted tonight and will start to layout the hot spa area long with the stepping stones.

I honestly don't think there would've been any serious changes between the Sengoku and the 1750's so I'm happy there :)
I'm just going to keep it with the spring welling up in the pool and let the buggers suffer lol

That's just begging for a miniature of a guy painted bright red from the neck down, wearing just a towel on his head and a loincloth type affair to preserve his modesty 😰
-
lol
Tempting and if it were for me I think I'd do one :D
-
Buildings are painted, paths are down and the spring is built. Fences will be done over the weekend.

it lacks water all that :D ;)

Lovely, I may borrow some of these ideas if that's okay

Thanks gents :)

Course you can (and thank you for asking) :)
-

My imagination was running wild :D
-
Great Looking!!! I'm quite curious about the bamboo fence...
-
Thanks :)
You're curiosity might go on for a while yet as I'm leaning towards a yamato-bei style wall (timber).
-

No, what it needs is a troop of red faced snow monkeys luxuriating in the steam.
It’s a jolly nice jacuzi James. I’m still waiting for the perfectly raked, just so pebble garden, so beloved of gardening centres the world around. :)
-
But I think those macaques only figured out that lounging in a hot tub is more fun than shivering in the snow in the 20th Century. Took them long enough. Stupid monkeys.
It's a rather lovely build. There was a recent video game called Shadow Tactics: Blades of the Shogun (can they never resist having two titles separated by a colon, these computer game people?). If you ever played the old PC classic Commandos it is basically the same stealth gameplay, but based in Feudal Japan with Ninjas and Samurai instead of WW2 with Commandos and spies. Anyway, there's a mission where you have to assassinate a bad guy in one of these places. And it looks very much like the one you are building. So even if you don't know what a Sengoku period spa looked liked, you can take some solace from the fact that if you have got it wrong at least you have company. :)
-
My imagination was running wild :D
stop immediately to imagine things naughty boy ... lol lol
-
Started work on the walls. They are a simple ita bei (board fence). The only trick bit will be building them around the stones around the spring but I'll deal with that when I come to it :)

Tidy job. When the fence hits the stones what about stepping the fence up and hiding the gap with a fern in the rocks.
-
That’s not a bad idea. Either that or bamboo (such a small area shouldn’t be a problem).
-
Wow, fence looks good so far! :)
-
Very smart
-
Very interesting style. Neatly done. 8)

Thanks chaps :)
Got the fences done for the whole compound. They are now being painted and once done and stuck down I'll commence with the groundwork.

Do you know why they used what is quite a complicated fence structure?
-
Because they're awkward buggers lol
It's a type of decoration I think along with prestige "Ooo, look what we can afford fence wise" or words to that effect.
-

Oh google translate, how you fail us lol

Walls are painted along with the stones. Groundwork next and then the planting at the rear to hide the gaps between the stones and the fence. Finally will be the painting of the spring and the adding of water effects.

Yeah, Google Translate properly stitched me up with that one. I don't even know what some of those words are! I could have just pointed and said "kōkana fensu" and given a look that said "yeah, mine".
Very nice painting, the timber fence came out particularly well.
-
That looks very nice, any chance of doing those wooden walls for the catalogue?? Or should I contact you 😁
-
Looking good! What are the two little free standing wooden structures at the front? Porch lights, privvies, dovecots?
-
Thanks chaps :)
Groundwork is down and drying.

Stunning :-* :-* :-* :-* :-* :-*
-
You are the master of all things Japanese.
Love what you have done. :-*
-
Wow! Just Wow! That’s brilliant. The bamboo is a really nice touch.
-
Simply magnificent!
-
good work :-*
-
Great!!! I envy the owner of this Onsen!!!
-
Very well done. Total one of a kind too, the owner should be very pleased with this. The bamboo is good too, anything bulkier could have potentially visually dominated too much.
-
Now that is something really special :-* :-*
-
Many thanks for the kind comments chaps :)
-
Superb :-*
-
Crumbs, that's a miniature masterpiece.
-
I think my favourite part is the bamboo- just perfect.
-
Really nice work. :-* :-*
-
Many thanks gents :)

Outstanding! :-* :-* :-*
-
It is a beautiful piece

Superb! :-*
-
Again an amazing masterpiece :-* :-* :-*
-
Thanks again chaps :)
-
Wow, that is a beautiful piece of terrain!
-
it make me think about Zatoichi :)
-
Fantastic model. You set a high bar, but you've surpassed yourself with this.
What is the tall rough grass stuff by the spring?
-
Cheers fellas :)
What is the tall rough grass stuff by the spring?
Halloween broomsticks from a Japanese ¥100 shop a couple of years ago but I haven’t seen any since and I only bought four (that’s all they had).
-
Osmosis - thanks, if you hadn't resurrected this I would have missed it.
Jim as always this is awesome, there is so much to take away for inspiration. Thanks.
I really like the sticky out windows, they break up the flat wall brilliantly, the out house door is just so oriental as opposed to western, even though they are the same building, brilliant.
-
Thank you kindly :)
