Title: How to weather plastic buildings? (finished product added)
Post by: racm32 on May 15, 2018, 07:27:39 PM
So I got this metal barn from a toy farm set that is perfect scale for 20mm. It's made from a glossy plastic witch is not very realistic looking. What's a good way to weather it down a bit without repainting the whole thing? I have army painters mat spray, would it help?

Good call. A light dusting all over of black or brown or grey (or all), concentrating on the lower half would dirty that up a treat.

Is that with an air brush? I don't have one. Could I get same effect with spray paint used from distance?

Yeah, so long as you go easy and really keep a distance to start with. It'll probably look just like dust and then you can build it up slowly in layers.

You could experiment with a chipping effect using a sponge. Use a household sponge (or the sponge from a blister pack) danger in paint, excess dabbed off then used as lightly or heavily as desired in areas of wear. It's easy and effective. My go to weathering technique for tanks but would work on plastic buildings too!

SO I tried a couple dry brushing techniques and hit it with some Mat Varnish spray from Army Painter. A few more photos on my blog with some shots of stuff inside. http://wyndehurstproductions.blogspot.com/2018/05/20mm-warehouse.html (http://wyndehurstproductions.blogspot.com/2018/05/20mm-warehouse.html)

That is a great find.

While I have not tried it myself as I have not found a local supply. But I have seen people achieve amazing things with weathering spray.

You spray it on and the you wipe it off/smear it around with a damp cloth. For an instant weathering.

That stuff looks pretty cool. Wish I had known about it sooner.
