Title: Peter Pig/Stone Mountain (comparison photo Blue Moon - Stone Mountain)
Post by: FifteensAway on May 16, 2018, 07:38:04 AM
Anyone have a side-by-side comparison of the Peter Pig Old West buildings alongside any of the Stone Mountain Miniatures Old West buildings (specifically their false front buildings)?  I have a bunch of Stone Mountain and wondering if I can also mix in Peter Pig for my Old West towns to add variety.  Picture would be great but just an informed statement as to if they will work together would be appreciated.  Thanks!

Oh, also now have the Blue Moon 15/18 mm buildings and they seem too big in total size to work with Stone Mountain though the windows and doors aren't too far out of range.

I suspect that the Peter Pig will be pretty close to the Stone Mountain but I don't know for sure. I can tell you that I sculpted the Stone Mountain buildings at 1/120 as specified by Dave Bab at the time. I didn't realize those buildings were still in production I must have done the prototypes 30 years ago.

Heisler, thanks for the reply - though now I wonder if they are the same buildings you sculpted if done at 1:120, seem rather larger than that to me.  As a fellow model railroader, I tend to know my scales, more or less.  I guess I'll have to get some pictures hope so you can give a thumbs up or down on this.  Eventually.

Could have been 1/100, its hard to remember that far back. I still have that Origins award somewhere though!

If you post a picture I can tell you immediately if its mine or no. If the Stone Mountain false front is separate piece than I would just about guarantee that its my work.

Well, the fronts are separate pieces so that says it is your work.  So, good job on those very nice buildings.  But!  You are also responsible for some of my consternation.  I worry about matching the separate fronts to the base buildings - but I will overcome that easily enough.  My real 'challenge' is the stuff on the sides of the buildings that will prevent abutting one building up against another since my towns will reflect the very common practice of no space between two buildings.  Again, I will over come the challenge and, if necessary, get out my trusty Dremel tool.  No matter, still glad to have those buildings in the collection - at least one of each and I might order more duplicates.  So, thanks for your efforts in helping getting those building on the market and congratulations on them still being out there all these years later.

Still hoping to hear from someone who has both the Stone Mountain and Peter Pig Old West 15 mm buildings, though.

I sculpted the original masters without any of the additions. The folks at Stone Mountain added the extra vines and accessories afterwards. They were all designed so that any false front would fit on any of the base buildings. Glad you like them.

Glad to hear about the false front interchangeability because I was planning on experimenting with exactly that if I double up on them (or maybe triple up on at least one I've had for a long time).

Seeking the opinions of others:

That is Blue Moon structures between two Stone Mountain false fronts.  I'd like thoughts on if they work together or not, too out of scale or okay?  Thanks for your input.

Picture is a bit small but they look fine together from what I can see.

I'd say no.

I'm not sure its a great fit, but its not bad. Once you paint them up they will look better together. Buildings tended to vary greatly in size during the period. Take a look at picture of Bodie CA and you can see a lot of variation in building sizes.
