As i have started a new page to my Gang of rome topic "In the street of Rome" (http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=63629.0) about a galley's conversion, i create that one for the LAFers who don't see it and could be interested by a Playmobil Galley conversion work for 28mm ;)
so lets start :
1 - Find the boat :
cheap because uncomplete and full of calcarous marks, so cost me 5 euros only .
2 - See if the Playmobil scale is fitted for 28mm
(https://c1.staticflickr.com/1/948/27455023797_320c4cf847_b.jpg)
3 - Start the conversion work
Delete all the playmobil details that we don't need for our 28mm
and take off all the parts to make easier the work.

more to follow
-
Oh nice. I'll be keeping an eye on this one too.
-
I'll be following your progress. I bought one of these at the swap meet years ago and have done nothing with it. I look forward to watching you solve all the repurposing-for- 28mm problems.
-
Belle trouvaille Nervisfr.
Je vais suivre de près cette conversion...
Jacques

Watching this with interest. However I rather liked the prow and stern sections. Intrigued as to what you are going to replace them with.

i'll keep them but with a little work......
4 Start the work on the prow then
It' easy with wood cocktail shakers (better than ice cream stick) ;)

Already making me want to have one... o_o
Or 2... :D ;D

Very useful
-
Very interesting and useful thread.
-
Following.
-
Nice idea to use the stirrers. Looking forward to seeing this come together.
-
Converting Playmobil is so much fun - this looks like it is becoming to be another great example!

Ah! "stirrers", thank you for the good word for this cocktail stick ;)
5 - Work on the deck
Waiting the prow drying, i start the work on the deck.
Remove the original deck trap. It's very easy because the playmobil's plastic is a very good one. I cut it off with a little trowel and a hammer.
(pass the sharpened 's trowel under the piece to remove it).
The original great iron grille is cut into 2 pieces.
Sculpted balsa wood is use to fil the gap and received the new iron grilles for the trap.

and detail on the deck trap

;)
-
This looks promising. First the Playmobil colosseum and now this.. I may have to raid a toystore soon :)
And coffee stirrers have become my primary source for wood for terrain. It started with a little pilfering at the local coffee franchise, then I ordered a 1000 stick from China.
-
Looking good so far... :)
-
Still waiting the drying step from the other items...... :D
6 work on the hull
the start of the work on the bank of oars (what wasn't on the original ship)
May be drilled when dry from the hull's interior.

-
An excellent thread, will follow this with interest. Had thought about the playmobil galley but hadn’t taken the plunge - the deck looks a good size for a gaming piece.
-
my attention is to use it mainly like a piece of terrrain for my Harbour.
But i think it could be used for a game area too ;D
-
'll be following this thread! Cheers!
-
this looks promising! i'll keep an eye on it :)
-
when i start this topic, i never imagine that so many people are interested by this kind of conversion....
;)
May be there is something missing there ? :D

In my case, I am mainly interested in Venetian and Ottoman galleys of the Renaissance, of which there are no decent tabletop examples. I suppose I will have to do something similar to this project.
-
May be but the renaissance's galleys are more sophisticated than the roman ones....isn't it
a lot of work indeed.
Cut a low hull of a playmobil 's pirate ship to get a "renaissance" look with a low waterline
before :
just like this simulation based on a playmobil picture (reworked with a photos software) to see the look that you can get
After :
it's change a lot its shape . Now just imagine the boat with oars, guns in the prow and full off ottoman soldiers. ;)
-
Renaissance Galleys really look nothing like either ancient ones or Renaissance sailing ships.
You'll have to build it from scratch, I suspect.
-
7 - Work on the hull
The bank of oars is now dry.
Then i add some small screws to prevent bad surprise during the work to come on the hull.
Take care to drill where the screw couldn't hamper the deck clips.
-
Looking good.
-
8 - Work on the deck 's rail
just saw them off (top and bottom of the original).
Good plastic mean easy job ;)
Now the deck' rails are at the good scale for 28mm :-*

Oh, I agree. I keep trying to push various 28mm ship manufacturers to produce one, but so far no takers. May be but the renaissance's galleys are more sophisticated than the roman ones....isn't it
a lot of work indeed.

This might not be a bad temporary substitute. Thanks.

may be from them for Renaissance galley :

or on request ?
-
9 - Work on the oars
the oars 'll be made with cocktail/barbecue sticks.
but with a little shapening job on them, with an angle grinder and a special brush disk (bought at ACTION store )
and the "before / after" pic (for test) :

-
About the shape of the oars you can check the Olympias a reproduction trireme.
-
That's very clever with the oars.
-
About the shape of the oars you can check the Olympias a reproduction trireme.
i don't try to create a true trireme/galley.......just something looking like. lol lol lol
too many things to do and no time to do them ;)
-
10 - Work on the oars' ranks
the oars'ranks are covered with stirrer as wood planks. then the hull is glue to the deck when the oars' ranks are dry.

detail :

next step :
finish the planks work to link to the deck and drill the porthole to insert the oars into...... ;)
-
Looking goood. :-*
-
nice
-
I like how it is coming out!
-
mon cousin you little devil, you did not work in the garden and you beat me in that conversion
splendid like always
-

splendid like always
Thank you my carlo....but i can do 2 thing at the same time :
Make my wife happy in working in the garden and then follow my bright ideas about this work.
And i get peace in the couple ;) ;) ;) too
-
This is super neat! I'll be following along too, thanks
-
- 11 Drill the portholes
to receive the oars, the hull is drilled .
there is only two ranks of portholes but i think it's enough to look like a true galley.... >:D
Eric
-
I like your systematic procedure, please keep posting!
-
i'll do my best to take pics a each step ...
;)
-

Eric
Just call it a bireme and you're fine. 🙂
-
Just call it a bireme and you're fine. 🙂
that's the idea lol lol lol
-
Once the oars go on I can see an issue with transporting the ship, I wonder if the oarbanks could have been secured to the hull with magnets?
-
I hope i can make the oars removable as i drill deep the portholes.
12 - Shaping the oars
the most boring of the work on the galley.
one by one, the "oars" are shape with a bench grinder to give them a good looking ;)
here the heavy tool in action :
and the size test :
i have only 40 oars to shape o_o o_o
-
between 2 "shaping" operation, i change my mind off things with work on the prow and the rear of the galley.
things are going in place ;D
-
This is a great project, I really like the creative use of coffee stirrers, its very inspiring as I've a bag of 1000 lying in a cupboard myself.
-
Don't panic, i'm still working on this project but i have nothing new to show you...
the oars shaping is qite long and boring if any. Nearly at the end of this endless step.
Need two rudders too ;D
The rear sides are nearly done too but i have to glue few stirrers and then wait for drying. And so on.
Cheers
Eric
-
I do rather like the planking on the prow!
-
Because of this thread I've bid on 5 Playmobil ships in all shapes and sizes... I may have enough for a whole seabattle by the end of this week.. :-X

may be not so much work needed , as mine ? As i have started from nearly nothing lol lol

thank you very much dear DintheDin.
and without too much difficult work ! :-*
-
at last, i'm back in this topic with good news.
the oars work has been complete. i have to change the angle of the oars to give a better look to the galley.
I fill all the holes in the oars bank and repeat the drilling operation o_o.
the prow is glue to the deck. the rear is nearly done.
the final result (for the moment) :
all the boat is sanded with a grinder's light disk to level all parts.

I hate to say this now, but I'm sure I've had little wooden fellas exactly like those oars with some sort of canape thingy from a supermarket. It might have been Iceland or somewhere like that. EDIT: The missus informs me they have them in Sainsbury's as packs of toothpicks you can buy.
I have double warm feelings for this thread because, a) it looks superb and b) I used to love my Playmobil when I was a kid. I was obsessed. I don't think it's too far of a leap to say it was the start of my collecting habit. My brother and I played our first wargames with Playmobil toys in the garden (my 7th cavalry always did great execution).
-
Eric, very well done. :-* :-* :-*
-
The continuation of your work is more and more surprising! I'm following with great interest! Cheers!
-
Thank guys !
the rear is now finished, joined and glue to the hull.

The desk's rails are finished too !
the rails conversion :
the "metal" sticks fixed in the rails are welding rods (more stronger than a paper clip for this use). ;)
the rails on the deck :
joined and holes filled.

every day brings me closer to the end of the work.
the steering oars are now made and fixed to the rear side of the galley.

that smelt the end guys !
the last operation ; the mast and the sails
hope you'll enjoy
-
Perfect fitting! They look great! Cheers!
-
all part of the steering oars are glue strongly to prevent accident when moving/handling the galley.
i don't want to see my job ruined by a bad handling. o_o o_o
I have to build a special box for transportation now :'( :'( :'(
-
An old saying: "Big boats, big storms" lol
Until now you have proved that your every step has been solidly studied!
Keep calm and keep up the good job!

as you say !
i'm not modelling a galley but a wargame piece of terrain so i need something quite strong and....beautyfull ;)
-
the job on the mast
As it's hollow, i fill it with styrene and then join with wood glue "all in one" style (see start of the topic) ;).
A little pass over with the grinder to rounded the mast.
detail of the mast's base.
and now the sail's pole (barbecue stick again) :
then we have to add the sail, which'll be in rest position (it's easier).
Here a paper handkerchief deployed to see the right size.
It is rolled over itself and fixed to the sail's pole.
The glue varnish is pass over to make the sail more strong and rigid.
and it's done ! :-* :-*

Wow, wow, wow! :o

I'm going to go there - this was a fantastic result!! It looks really good, and for such hard work too. I was a bit sceptical during the early shots but you've totally smashed it.
Please do share painted shots once you get there, but well done again :o :o

Indeed it is.
It looks very 'playable' too.
Plenty of places to position figures.
:-*

Thank you guys.
that's the idee Mason !
Play on an element of terrain and not a model lol lol lol
i'll do my best to start painting before living for hollidays in a week. If i 'm not intercepted by my daughter and her endless requests about her playmobil's bungalows... :D

Fantastic

It is really a great hit! :-* Congratulations!
-
Very well done Eric. :-* :-* :-*
Its a joy. :)
-
Thank you guys.
I'm very happy with the final result.
That looks like a realy galley. I m not sure of the same result with a mdf boat. ;)
but who says galley in an harbor, says sailors.......so i have much more work in a near future then !
Endless project .
Cheers
Eric
-
That galley turned out beautifully Eric!
-
Beautiful job!
-
Thank you guys.
Back from holidays but still no time to return on the miniature shipyard lol
-
Ok, we are here, sitting in front of our computer desk, ready to se your progress! lol
-
Nothing new on board, except i found a new Playmobil boat .....for nothing (0,50 €). ;)
But it's a Drakkard !
Don't know what i'll do with it : A Drakkard ?, A Roman merchant ship ?
Cheers
Eric
-
A viking Knarr (commercial ship) ;)
-
It could work for your Nordic OGAM project, all viking love to sail, even the dead ones.
-
A viking Knarr (commercial ship) ;)
i think is out of scale for the 28mm if i take the Drakkard option. or i have to change the figurehead ?
comparison scale with a 28mm BTD
(https://c2.staticflickr.com/2/1856/44246843362_3159001550_b.jpg)
-
I think that if you elevate the deck, put options for more oars and make a smaller figurehead of your own, it will be a fine drakkar!
Cheers!

i'm not sure it could work with your star wars project lol lol lol

Spaceship Drakar 1... :D

or Drakk Vador ;)
i have dissambled the boat .
I have to scratchbuild a new figurehead to resize down the boat to 28mm. :'(
-
I have faith on you! ;) Eager to see you starting! ;D
thank you for your support DintheDin.
i'll create a new topic about it ;)
-
Ha, when your work with the galley inspired me to buy one too, I picked up the Viking ship as well :D
Curious to see what you do witht this one.
Oh and yeah, I came to the same conclusion of scratchbuilding a new figurehead.. which is a shame as I kinda like this one

i'll try to copy the playmobil one with a wood version . I have not 3D printer :'( :'( :'(
-
Τhis is delightful work!
I think your Drakkar would make a fine Roman merchantman if you leave off the figurehead and the corresponding part in the stern, although you'de probably need to drastically rebuild the deck - you could make a cargo hold in the process.
Looking forward to seeing it develop!
