Title: HARDWIRED: a co-op/solo cyberpunk game (cover reveal - 19 April, 2019)
Post by: Dentatus on June 01, 2018, 02:47:56 PM
Figured I'd leave this here

***

Wanting more fast-play options for our weekly game sessions, I wrote up a set of co-op skirmish rules. HARDWIRED is sort of an hommage to the old pc game 'Syndicate'. (anyone remember that?)

Nice, planning to use Pulp Alley for Cyberpunk gaming at some point but the Co-op idea sounds interesting. I'll check these out when I get home.

Syndicate!? Oh that was brilliant. Time for someone to make a new version for iOS!

Thanks for the rules. I’ll sure try them out!

I'd love an X-Com version. Turn-based, customizable, specialists... that would be so much awesome.

Could you explain the Drone mechanism a little bit? Is the reason I'd use Drones primarily because they're faster and I can stay protected? Am I right in reading that a Drone doesn't suffer from the Action fatigue effect?

Liking what I am reading so far - seems to strike a good balance between colour and tactical play. Nice. I think I will give it a try myself soon.

Correct. Agent Drones do not suffer from degraded opportunities but use a D8 for every Action attempt. They are faster and more efficient extensions of the Agent (usually Splicer) who - in our games at least -stays under cover.

Light gray suit? Ponytail? Big honking pistol?  Yes.

Am I being incredibly stupid or are all agents able to access all 12 of the CAPs? just with a higher chance of succeeding on their specialisation?

Thanks for your rules; I'll check them out ASAP.
I'm finishing a short rules for an X-Com solitaire campaign to be playable with any skirmish system. I'm also playing a skirmish system but it is in the first steps. You can read a test battle at my blog: http://javieratwar.blogspot.com/2018/02/x-com-testing.html (http://javieratwar.blogspot.com/2018/02/x-com-testing.html)
Everything is stopped at the moment but if you're interested we can talk in July.
Cheers,

I'll definitely check these out.  Have you done anything with extended campaigns?

Also, do you have any character sheets with four agents per page?  Its no big deal to create my own, but why reinvent the wheel, etc.

Was this written with the idea that everyone bring one agent, or is there a recommended party size?

No, you're not stupid. Agents can access any CAP. The linked specializations give the Agent a greater chance of success.

Thanks and no extended campaigns at this point. Not sure how I'd credit XP or offer Upgrades to experienced agents.  I'll think on that at some point.

There is a single Agent Stat sheet on the last page. Sorry, you'll have to make your own for multiple Agents.

As far as party size, there are six of us who meet weekly and we've each run an Agent. The game moves fast , even on a 4 x 6 game mat.

I suppose if you have a large group, you can bump the mission area, increase the Turn limit to 8, and add 1 to each H-SEC spawn round. Up the stakes for a major op.

1 more question blast template for grenades, what size?

If I was to run a campaign, I would run it like in ospreys black ops. Teams win Intel which acts as a dice modifier they have to score over a predetermined number if they succeed then they win the campaign if they fail then they lose all Intel gained to that point. (Or something like that, it's been a while since I read the rules).

Having xp to upgrade the agents seems wrong to me, they are already at the top of their game and have been enhanced as far as possible beyond that.

I have a Pyrkol Template set. IIRC, the Small Blast Template is 3", the Large 5".  We use the Large one for grenades in HARDWIRED.

I agree the Agents already function at the bleeding edge. The Black Ops Intel idea sounds like it might be perfect. I think I have a copy on the game room shelf. I'll have to read up on that.

Some questions re the Cyber CAPs namely Overload, Hijack/Resist and Pilot. How do you play these say you're targeting H-SEC Drones? Is LoS required? Cool mechanics btw, very much looking forward to giving it a spin, I've just got to sort out some models and terrain. Maybe I can make a solo game of it tonight..

Hi,

So we've only used Pilot for Agent Drones but Hijack and Overload v H-SEC drones were 18" and LOS. Similar to Ranged Combat.

(Guess I shoulda mentioned that, eh?)

Title: Re: HARDWIRED: a free cyberpunk game

That makes sense re Hijack... I can imagine that you could easily incorprate a link node (?) which aids agents hijacking efforts eg the node is exposed but using it allows attempts to hijack non-LoS Drones.

I'll have to put my thinking jack on.

I like the idea that a Splicer might be tasked with trying to manage the enemy Drones, playing interfere for the rest of the Team.  Choices would include whether to 'jack or overloaded Drones.

Actually that does make me wonder if a mechanic that allows for a Drone to wrestle back control could be included.... Mmmm - love the idea of a Drones loyalty flip-flopping during the course of a game.
Title: Re: HARDWIRED: a free cyberpunk game
Post by: Dentatus on June 07, 2018, 01:46:53 AM
We batted that idea back and forth but it means creating H-Sec Agents with their own SPs and CAPs - or at least an active, autonomous H-SEC Network A.I.  - which we figured would require an actual H-SEC player, rather than the current co-op mission against waves of stock security troops.

The entire idea could be greatly expanded but I deliberately reined it and focused on a simple and straightforward pick-up game.

I like the link-node idea. They could be similar to on-site WiFi network extenders that need to be hacked in order to be useful to the Agents.

As people were talking in another thread about a set of cyberpunk rules not due out until next year, I thought I would bump this one a bit so folks can have a look and see if this ticks the boxes until then at least.

Thanks. Hardwired is meant to be a fast, fun, pick up game. Easy to play, easy to learn. It's nowhere near as in-depth as a genuine cyberpunk game/setting should be.  It's mirrorshade-flavored, if anything, and an homage to the old Syndicate PC game. That said, I'm painting up personalized Agents for the guys here because we all get a kick out playing it.

Thanks. I've got a full set of Bug Hunt MDF corridors needing to be put together.  But that's a major project and these do a fine job in the meantime.

It's also pretty cool Hardwired has been downloaded nearly 350 times. I hope people enjoy it. I mean any excuse to deploy assorted cool cyberpunk figs, right?

That is a great looking table for a game - I hadn't appreciated that you could/would be playing on a table with that degree of terrain density.  Thanks for taking the time to share, it gives me yet another excuse to build some more terrain myself  :D

Glad to help.  ;)

I placed an order with Khurasan to make a Hardwired/cyberpunk set in 15mm. It's a March/April project. I plan on using plastic electric junction boxes for buildings and feel a trip to Home Depot coming on. I'll post pictures when they're done.

Really cool board, that's a nice clever idea to use these blocks !

I downloaded your rules, very interesting ! Any plans of adding some shadowrun-like addon to it ? magic, races, etc...

cheers

Thanks.

Blocks? You mean the walls? They're 2" insulation foam.

As far as 'Shadowrun', other races/magic, etc,  it's a fantastic idea but I want to be careful not to stray from the original intent - which was a fast-play, tactical, co-operative game. Open model, minimal rules, no stacked chits, no book keeping...

Perhaps an appendix of optional rules, tweaks to base stats. arcane powers and such. Very cool idea. I'll give it a think.

It would be pretty cool ! thanks ! Shadowrun is my favorite cyberpunk universe, I've got plenty of nice old school minis !

Concerning the "blocks", I was thinking you were using painted wood pieces ;)
