I have had a soft spot for the late Crusades for a long time and when I saw the opening scenes from the HBO series Knightfall it tipped me over the edge. My plan is to create the scene of the dramatic escape at the Acre harbour during the last day of the siege. After that only the Templar and Teutonic Knight strongholds continued the resistance. First some images from the serie which was staged in the harbour of Dubrovnik i Croatia:

There are a few images related to Acre in the Osprey books of which this one sparked my initial interest of the potential of a harbour setting:
(https://s25.postimg.cc/54qz012cf/03_C25177-816_B-45_A1-_BAA0-_FB2_BCAC96_DE4.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/image/c7yufn7rv/)
Since a few years back I have disciplined myself to use a standard format for all terrain related to a skirmish setting. I built a simple frame sized 100x75 cm in which all terrain pieces must fit:
(https://s25.postimg.cc/9f5mvc4rz/1_AF74_CFA-_F7_D9-4_C52-9_F60-7994001_D2116.jpg) (https://postimg.cc/image/uot966l2j/)
In this I will use a thin mdf board for the water level on which I will build a stone harbour structure using floor insulation foam. The edge of the harbour will be lined with an old GW Mighty Fortress that I never used.
Starting with the foam:

I used a modelling knife and an aol bayonet :D to carve up the stonework. Somewhere in this forum I stole the excellent idea of running a ballpen in the slit after the cut which widen the gap between the stones:

Very interesting project!
I couldn't stand those opening scenes of Knightfall dramaturgically, but it certainly makes for great scenario inspiration. Looking forward to see where this goes :)
-
Great start! Although I hated Knightfall. Helmet cam anyone? lol
You can make a ball out of crumbled tinfoil and roll it around, giving more random texture to the stones
-
I agree about the quality of the series but for me the subject often take the upper hand when it comes to providing inspiration ;)
Great idea with the tinfoil. I have to try that but (un) fortunately I have progressed to the painting phase. It is just the image upload that is lagging >:(

Followed by a number of layers of drybrushing:

Next step is the base board with some water-like paint with several layers of gloss varnish.
-
This is quite the promising start. Curious as to what it will look like when its done but should be pretty good.
-
Taking a little break from the terrain labour and finished the first batch of Templars:

I,ll watch this project with interest , one of my favourite periods . What skirmish rules will you use ? I would go for Lion Rampant , or a variation of them .
-
I actually do not do a lot of gaming these days due to lack of opponents. Research, building and painting is more the plan 8)
-
Neat and crispy job on your baseboard!
And a great painjtob of your Templars!
Keep 'em coming!
-
DintheDin, Thanks for the encouragement! I will desperately need it! Scenery, ships and loads of miniatures to be completed o_o

Steady hand and your mind focused on the target! ;)
-
This all looks very exciting. Will be following with great interest.
May I ask where the Templar models are from?
Your patience in scoring the stonework on the foamboard is outstanding...

That's incredibly creative. Would never have guessed and yet I knew the Aragorns looked familiar. Great work.

Excellent! I'm definitely nicking that Aragorn idea :D

There is also the new Outrider rules from Osprey for the 'small skirmish' - but not sure how good they are. :)

I came for the scenery, but the troops are nice too - and the Aragorns worked well.

Spent the day drybrushing walls and finalizing some more miniatures and the cog. The harbour is still WIP and will get a wooden jetty like in Knightfall. I also need to add a lot of ”clutter” to make it look a bit more realistic. The Cog is a Russian paper model that is quite ok in size. Not bad for 8 USD me thinks :)
I must also produce some kind of backdrop. For this WIP shot I managed to pressgang an (un)willing assistant to hold a blue sheet to avoid having the garage in the background. To fill the scene I will need quite a few civilians and casualties. Maybe also some smaller boat. Any ideas for sourcing seated medieval miniatures?

This is a fantastic thread. That boat is first class and at only 8$US a real bargain. Looking forward already to the next installment.
-
Now I am really keen to get my Caravel by the same company, will probably get the Cog as well.
-
It continues to be coming out great! So are your figures! Well done!
The cog is very nice, this company makes interesting stuff!
When all this place will be filled with clutter here and there, it will suddenly spring into life! Keep up the good job!
-
stunning
-
That is a lot of harbour! Well done, it’s looking great.
-
Great stuff :)
-
Many thanks for all the encouragement!
Regarding the clutter effect, I am considering to have some market stalls along the wall with canvas roofs. Anyone have experience on building such? A crane for lifting heavy cargo would also be good. Any ideas how a 13th century version should look like?
All support appreciated!

Since Roman times cranes seem to retain their basic concept of multiplying human power, using a treadwheel. Here is a Google search and some pics

DintheDin,
Many thanks! Seems a bit complex to build so I might need to buy or to find a less complex crane. ”simple Medieval counterweight crane” anywhere? :D

Thanks for your comments! Jericho, those look fabtastic but unfortunately I have to save my bullion for lead ;)
So, I am trying to get my act together for the crane. It seems I have to cheat a bit regarding the working mechanism but it seems I have the pieces lined up after a bit of work:

I like very much how you made the "Alpha" part of the crane, eager to see the continuation! Cheers!

Nice work - the cog is a nice little ship, the fortifications are grand - like the lighting with that reflection in the water in particular.

Here is the latest addition:

As soon as I have enough attackers, defenders and civilians I will do some action shots. I initially only planned the harbour setting but I am pondering if I should build a breached wall section to present the break into the city. I have then enough houses to set up some street fighting so this project could eventually end up in three stages:
1. The Breach
2. The City
3. The Harbour
It will require more miniatures and to scratch out the city surface as well as terrain for the breach of the walls. Maybe I can finish it within this year ;D
-
:-* Excellent minis!
I see that your plan unfolds to a grand project!
You have proven that you have the potential!
I wish you all the best! Cheers!
-
Thanks Din,
Lets hope it unfolds and not just folds :D
-
It’s all coming together beautifully, more power to your elbow. 😎
-
Very much enjoying progress 8)
-
Thanks for the encouragement!
I am though no longer in charge of the project. The project owns me and keeps expanding beyond control! o_o ;D
I just realize that I need minis for all the main characters of this drama and I am lacking a few which I would be grateful to receive some proposals. My biggest concern is to find a suitable King Henry II of Jerusalem. He was 21 years old in 1291 and I would ideally like to have him portrayed as he leaves Acre by ship May 18. I imagine him in chainmail and a surcoat with a sword sheated ( not drawn). Maybe with a mantle and a crown on his head. Very much like this one but dismounted:
https://1stcorps.co.uk/product/mec05-medieval-king-wearing-chainmail-coif/
Any ideas out there?

Great project. You try these from Crusader

Great proposals! The armswap is beyond my skills I am afraid, but the other is definately a strong candidate. Many thanks!

Lots of new figures.
Really great set up you have
and the figures to go with it. :-*

I love your painting style

Thanks for your comments and encouragement!
I am now struggling a bit whether to finalize the port OR to paint more minis OR to build a breach for the castle wall OR to prepare the base board for the city (lots of cobble stones to be cut out)??? ??? ??? Ideally it would be nice to do the whole project in chronological order, which is the reason why I scrambled together the above pictures ;)
-
By the looks of it you've enough (gorgeous) terrain and minis to start playing, so I'd prioritize the projects that allow you to play different scenarios or bigger battles :)

I agree with the above. But whatever you create and post, is an eye candy for us! So, keep up the good job and keep posting! :)

Decided to put the harbour scene on hold for a while and switch to building the breach of the city walls. I picked up some Renedra walls to build a breach:

Brilliant work again, the hoardings are magnificent - and I like the look of the cobbles-in-progress. 8) 8)

Thanks Vanvolak!
Any form of encouragement is much appreciated! Just finished the damned cobbles and gave them a first wash :)

I got diverted by my son who suddenly wanted to game WW2!!! :o :o :o
Cant miss that so Acre will have to wait a bit. I have finished the breach and will make a more proper write up and photo session later, but here are some quick shots of the Mamluks breaking into the inner wall of May 18, 1291:

Fabulous work I mus say. It will be. A great inspiration for my upcoming projects, my French medieval town and castle for lion Rampant.
Cheers

I am afraid I will not be able to return to this project until the new year but rest assured, return I will ;)
Thanks for your comments and interest!

After a long detour of other projects I have finally come back to Acre :)
I am planning to skip my old home brewed rules and use Lion Rampant instead. I therefore need to organize the existing, and new, forces into the 6 and 12 figure groups and need to find a suitable scale ratio. The info on the attackers is not very detailed in terms of military formations but I understand that the info on the defending side is much better documented. I have read the Osprey campaign book and a few other accounts but failed to pin down the number of knights (and sergeants)from the military orders. The defenders were around 1000 knights(Templars, Hospitallers, Teutonic, Lazarus, St Thomas, English, French, Cyprus, Italian) and around 14000 infantry. I found the following in an old print of an article by Ian Dunbar ( no sources mentioned) but I wonder if they can be correct?
Templar knights 240
Hospitaller knights 140
Teutonic knights 15
Grateful for any insights!
