Title: Black 2.0
Post by: cameron on June 04, 2018, 10:11:14 PM
My wife has invested heavily in the Hellboy board game kickstarter, so when the minis finally deliver, we're going to have a lot of painting to do. We have already started strategizing, and we want to paint them as close to the style of the comic books as possible. For those of you who aren't familiar with the comic, one of the main defining features is very black, hard shadows. Like this:

With that in mind, I bought a bottle of "Black 2.0" (https://www.moarstuff.com/black-2-0-worlds-blackest-paint/). The story behind the development of the paint is interesting in itself, but the basic idea is that it's the blackest, most matte black paint you can buy commercially - potentially to the point where you can't see any detail at all, just a black silhouette where the paint is.

Have any of you used this paint before? Any tips or tricks? I usually prime in black and leave the recessed areas dark or black as I paint, but with this stuff I think we will need to paint the miniature as normal and then add in the Black 2.0 shadows as the last step - if it's as black as it's advertised to be, we won't be able to see any detail on our miniatures to know where to put the other colours!

A good way to start would probably be to prime in grey and then take a high-contrast photo of the primed figure, crush the values in photoshop, and use that as a template or guideline for painting the actual figure.

I'm interested in other peoples' thoughts!

I have some and have used it, though not on minis. It's definitely a black black, but for best blackness it needs several coats. I've never got it detail-vanishingly black.

I would really like to see a real-life comparison between Black 2.0 and VantaBlack.
