Title: SAGA Picts with chariots
Post by: Dalcor on June 10, 2018, 08:05:47 PM
I have jsut recently decided to purchase Victrix Gauls and convert them to Viking Berserkers. I need about 12 of them for Lion Rampant, so it means I will have about 36 models left over, so Ive tried to look for options how to use them.

Picts. Picts are celts like Gauls, I would need to change heads and shields (gripping beast) and probably buy some naked models from Victrix and HF Minis - Finaly, that left me with option to purchase Kev's skyclad versions of some female models.

Some friends of mine playing SAGA (I am Rampant guy) so I would like to build them for SAGA so I can tell them how wrong they are not playing Rampant of course ;-D

Now, I opened the rulebook, and see
Pict Warlord - Chariot. No Horse?

Not one of my sources does speak about pict chariots in battle. However there are a lot of pict carving with warlord on horse.
I have found some chariots mentioned in stories about battle at Mons Grampius at 84AD Romans versis Caledonians, before Pict Age.

Is there anything I overlooked?

The lack of a mounted option for the Pict Warlord may be a balancing issue: he would have been the only Warlord to have 3 options.

I have never heard of Pict chariots or seen any evidence of them...though perhaps there might have been a hipster-Pict who wanted to go all retro with his ride.

The Pict Warband is from the Aetius and Arthur supplement and the inclusion of chariots is a bit of an indulgence: by the time the Romans were leaving Britain they are possible but unlikely.

Of course, you could just make some awesome conversion grand epic Pict mounted warlord, and simply use the chariot based warlords rules for it....

;D (this pic is in anticipation of what you create)

Some years ago, a friend of mine asked (on French-language forums) if he could use Pictish war-chariots late in the Dark Ages period.

I answered "Just have a look at the historical sources"!

And I made and posted this (with a modified image of a French vehicle inspection sticker, which reads: 59 AD, 60 AD etc)...  lol
