The modular dungeon, that is.
Completed the latest round of glass work this weekend and allowed the hobby to take over one of my shop tables for a couple days. Now this idea had been bouncing around my head for a while: 3D dungeon tiles using faux-stone vinyl tiles. Seemed like a fast and simple way to get a sturdy, stone floor. Add a hunk of 1″ insulation foam, some cheap craft paint, a couple paint pens, lots of elbow grease scoring the stone work, and glue.
The result is three 12″x 12″ rooms, six 6″ x 12″ corridors, and eight 6″ x 6″ rooms.

I know there’s lots of detailing yet to be done. I’m going to scour my bits box and the internet for details and banners, and I suspect I’ll want to pick up a couple sets of 28mm scenics and furniture, but I think this is a good start. So far, the project cost less than $50.
More pictures coming as I progress. I’m looking forward to our next dungeon crawl even more now.
Have a great day.

great idea using the cheap fake stone tiles.... i might have to steal that!
-
Steal away. That's what the internet is for.

I did the same for a modular mine, and they came out pretty nice.
What did you use to glue the foam down?
After some trying, I found Liquid Nails to give me the best result.
Did you have a plan for the "optimal" piece types and numbers, or did you just kind of wing it?
-
I used Weldbond. Sort of Elmers on steroids. It's holding together so far.
Winged it - Which is why I made three additional passageway end-caps today.
-
they look great.

Thanks. I started adding details last night. Pix when I'm done.

Really excited to see where this is going. Looks like a lot of fun to play on!

Back at it after a couple weeks off, a new Song of Blades and Heroes campaign begins:
A snarky Dragonborn paladin, a sensitive Orc, a spectacularly unlucky Dwarf, and a know-it-all Elf descend into a crypt in search of gold.

Great job on the dungeon. I really like the photography - very dramatic, some nice angles.
Looking forward to the next installment!

Missed a couple session due to real life obligations, but our heroes eventually returned to Tharnulf's Crypt. Was a slugfest, but they finally made it past the library to stand bloodied but unbeaten before Tharnulf's Chamber.

Gah! Cliffhanger! What happens next!?!?
This is very cool!

Added some permanent scatter terrain bitz to the modular dungeon tiles. Funny what a few barrels, chests, rubble piles, broken boxes, and scattered weapons will do to smarten a place up.

Grandsons 1 and 2 brought a bit of combat to the dungeon tiles recently. To be continued.

A do-over would find me using different glue for the walls -> floor. Weldbond doesn't have the grip.
A couple more pix at the blog.

fantastic

It looks really good. How big are the squares? I am not current or conversant on how big dungeons-with-miniatures Rules specify for the squares. What is the current theory?
Or (asked another way) how big is the biggest mini that should be able to fit in one square?
-
Thank you.
The squares are 1.5 inches square. I didn't make the tiles with any particular rules in mind. I just wanted it to be easy to move figs around and handle larger, more dynamic poses. I figured I can tweak whatever game to fit my terrain.

;D Looks like fun!

A few more bookcases for the library, four more rubble piles, five Mantic Dungeon doors/end caps... I think I can check this project 'Complete'.

... I think I can check this project 'Complete'.....
lol
No modular dungeon is ever complete, there is always a specific room, or a unique lair, or a decrepit rope bridge over the chasm that is vital for the next adventure.

That is really outstanding!
-
Thanks man. Simple, reasonably sturdy despite the white glue, it's seen a steady stream of dungeon delvers since its inception. I'm pleased with the end result.
-
Great job. I always love to see projects that are cheap and reasonably simple to execute.
-
I hadn't seen this, it looks excellent.
Wish I could come and play.
-
Easy fix: Vacation on Cape Cod and come to one of our Tuesday Night Game Nights.

If only...
