Title: Need suggestions - inexpensive pulp era vehicles
Post by: NickNascati on June 13, 2018, 10:00:37 PM
All,
I have 6 diecast models I got off of ebay, for considerably more than I wanted to spend. I still need another 4 – 6, but I really don't want to pay more than $10.00 USD each for them. I am after 2 -3 pickup trucks, and 2-3 four door sedans. I need 1/43rd or 1/48th scale, 1930s or early 40s vehicles. Any suggestions?  US sources please.

Some of the Cars diecasts are still available in the UK for very little so perhaps there are still some cheap US stockists too? I think they're about 1:55 from what I've seen advertised. I picked up the fuel truck and the pick up truck for about £3 each and they look pretty good for Pulp. The look is probably post war but they'd probably paint up fine. I've not done mine yet.

I think the least expensive source is going to be Models of Yesteryear off ebay --

1930 Model A Pickup -- https://www.ebay.com/itm/Matchbox-MODELS-OF-YESTERYEAR-Y35-1-B-1-1930-FORD-MODEL-A-AMBROSIA/183265349111?epid=1300346015&hash=item2aab774df7:g:3tYAAOSwx6pYsHMQ

2 x 1930 Model A Pickups -- https://www.ebay.com/itm/MATCHBOX-MODELS-OF-YESTERYEAR-Y35-1-1930-FORD-MODEL-A-PICK-UP-TRUCK/273249629237?hash=item3f9ef27435:m:mOUbcujnIbPUExTELMh5GcQ

It can be a bit daunting to search through so many items, but sometimes it pays off.

I'm finding that making my own from cornflake packets and bits of junk is a lot easier than I expected and as an added advantage it's practically free:

As mentioned by Elk101, Disney/Pixar Cars diecasts are cheap and readily available.  My kid is a big fan, so we have loads of them from Walmart, dollar stores, thrift stores...

Here is Doc Hudson and Smokey the pickup truck with a couple of 28mm figures for comparison.

Cheapest place to pick up these toys is at a thrift store like Value Village, you can get a bag of 'previously enjoyed' diecast cars for a few dollars.  Usually in pretty poor condition but since you're likely going to repaint (or even rebuild!) them, that's likely not a big problem :)

Impressive scratchbuilding, Andy!

Nick, in my experience, pickup trucks from the 1930's are the most difficult to find for a cheap price. Anything mail order, such as from eBay sellers, is going to have the added expense of shipping charges. Getting something cheap depends on going to second hand stores, or events like model train shows. Cheap sedans are easier to find.

Don't forget Company B.  They are having a sale on Model T vehicles, including the long bed and the scout car at USD$9/ea:

There's a model railroad site which had a very accurate listing of the true scale of all the cars in the Matchbox MoY series. I found it to be extremely handly.

The site's gone but luckily Archive.org still has a copy:

I wanted to find sedans, and ordered three today from ebay.  I am still looking for a couple pick up trucks. As was said, they are hard to find.  But I will be up to 9 x 1/43rd vehicles when these orders come in.
The cars vehicles look more like 1/64th.

The cars vehicles look more like 1/64th.

I think they're 'box scale' to an extent, so vary. Some work, some don't which makes online buying a trickier prospect. I've read 1:55 a lot but I never really trust scales.

Several 1:43 scale Ford model A pickups from 1930 & 1934 on eBay right now for reasonable prices. Also a couple of 1:43 scale 1940 Ford pickups up for bid on eBay.
