Title: India 1919 – uniform help please?
Post by: RedTower on June 25, 2018, 04:19:33 PM
Hello,

I was wondering if anyone might please be able to help identifying some Indian uniforms from 1919?

This photo was taken in the aftermath of the Amritsar massacre. Are these soldiers or military police? Any pointers, or suggestions of books that might help with uniforms would be very gratefully received, thanks!

PS, I am not actually  planning on gaming the Amritsar Massacre...  ;)

Judging by the fact that they are carrying Martini-Henry rifles (or just as likely Martini-Enfield rifles), I d say that they are either constabulary or local , Princely State forces. A number of Rajah's maintained their own forces, independent of the Indian Army. A number saw service in the Great War as Imperial Service Troops and they were usually equipped and armed with obsolete weapons, at least at the outset. The Indian Army at this time was equipped with SMLEs or in some cases older iterations of the Lee-Enfield.
